Calanthe Ardenis had her father's eyes and her mother's mouth and a quality of attention that belonged entirely to herself.
Liora had not noticed this in the previous version. In the previous version, Calanthe had been twenty-four when Liora first encountered her as someone to be managed rather than avoided, and by then the quality of attention had curdled into something sharper and less curious — the attention of a person who had decided what she thought about you and was looking for confirmation. The twelve-year-old version, sitting three chairs down from Liora at the trade review table and ostensibly learning how to conduct herself in rooms of consequence, had not yet decided anything.
She was, Liora realized with the mild unease of someone revising a longstanding assumption, actually watching. Not performing watchfulness, the way Vorian performed interest — actually taking things in, filing them, running some internal process on the data that produced, occasionally, a small adjustment in her expression.
The expression adjusted when it landed on Liora.
Not long. Not obviously. The kind of pause that a careful observer noticed and an inattentive one did not. Liora noticed it, because Liora noticed things, and she filed it in the category of *developing situations* rather than *immediate problems* and returned her attention to the estate manager presenting the grain yield projections.
But she noted it. The way she noted the two throat-clearings. The way she noted Aldwin's recalibrations. The way she kept records in the part of her mind that kept records.
*You're paying attention to me*, she thought, not quite at Calanthe. *That's new. Let's see where it goes.*
The review ended with the usual brisk efficiency that characterized Aldwin's management of meetings — things concluded when they were finished, not when a natural social pause suggested they might be, and people who expected winding-down pleasantries had generally stopped expecting them within their first few reviews. The room cleared in under five minutes.
Vorian caught her in the corridor.
This was, she recognized immediately, not accidental. He had positioned himself near the door in the way of someone who had decided to be somewhere and was performing spontaneity. He was wearing the particular expression he used for interactions he considered beneath his dignity but necessary — the expression of a man condescending graciously.
"Lia," he said, which was what the family called her and which he used now with the specific warmth of someone who had decided warmth was the correct tool. "How are your lessons going? I hear you've been spending time in the library."
"Very well, Uncle Vorian," she said, with the bright uncomplicated delivery she had been perfecting for four months. "Ser Aldric has been showing me the estate histories. There are so many interesting things in them."
"Estate histories." He processed this with the expression of a man filing information under *harmless*. "Rather dry reading for a young girl."
"I like the pictures," she said. "And some of them have maps. I like maps."
Tareth was two steps behind her, she knew without looking — she could feel him the way she felt the bloodline's warmth now, a presence she was attuned to. He had not moved to interpose himself. He was letting her handle it, the way he let her handle small things, the particular parental courtesy of a man who saw his child as a person rather than a liability.
This had always been true of him. She had not understood, before, what it cost him to do it consistently in a household that did not particularly value that kind of consideration.
"And what do you think of our trade operations?" Vorian asked, with the indulgent smile of a man who expected to hear something charming and wrong.
She had approximately three seconds to decide how stupid to be.
"I don't really understand most of it," she said, which was true in the sense that all true things were true regardless of context. "But Uncle Vorian, is it true you have a new horse? Papa mentioned it. Is it fast?"
She watched him decide that she was not a problem.
It took about four seconds. The assessment moved across his face with the particular transparency of a man who had never developed the habit of concealment because he had never needed it, and then he was talking about the horse — a three-year-old bay from the Velden valley stables, excellent bloodline, he had paid significantly more than he should have and was proud of it in the way that men were proud of expensive things they hadn't needed — and Liora listened with every appearance of delight and absolutely none of her attention.
Her attention was on Calanthe, who was standing slightly apart and watching the entire exchange with the expression of someone who had noticed that the floor was not quite level.
The garden in late afternoon had the quality Liora associated with thinking — the particular quality of outdoor space in the hour before the light changed, when things had settled into themselves and were simply being what they were. She had come here to review the trade review's numbers in peace.
She had been here for approximately ten minutes when the gate at the far end of the garden opened.
Calanthe walked with the deliberate casualness of someone who had decided on her approach and was executing it. She was wearing her good wool coat and her hair was arranged and she had, Liora noted, taken the time to be presentable, which meant this was not a chance encounter.
"Lia." She sat on the stone bench at the garden's center with the ease of someone accustomed to being welcome everywhere she chose to be. "It's cold to be reading outside."
"I wasn't reading," Liora said. "I was thinking."
Calanthe looked at her for a moment with the not-quite-readable expression. "Ser Aldric says you're the most curious student he's had in years."
"Ser Aldric is kind."
"Ser Aldric is not particularly kind," Calanthe said, with the directness of someone who had observed the same person for longer. "He's precise. When he says something, he means it." She smoothed her coat over her knee. "So what are you curious about?"
This was a better question than Liora had expected from a twelve-year-old. She revised her assessment upward and considered her options.
Calanthe was watching in the way of someone paying attention to how a question was being processed, not just to the answer that would eventually emerge. Patient watching — not aggressive, not hunting for weakness, but the attention of someone genuinely curious about what was underneath. The version of Calanthe she had known in the previous life had sharpened that curiosity into something surgical, cutting rather than wondering. This version had not made that choice yet.
She had spent four months managing Calanthe as a threat. It occurred to her now, sitting in the cold garden with the afternoon going amber, that she had perhaps been categorizing incorrectly. Not an ally — not yet, and possibly not ever, given what Liora knew about where this particular road led if left to run its course uninterrupted. But not only a threat either. Something more complicated: a person paying attention in a household full of people who weren't, directing her intelligence toward social positioning because no one had shown her anything better to direct it toward.
Liora knew something about misdirected intelligence.
"The family," she said, which was true and safe and interesting enough to be credible. "Where we came from. What we built. How it works." She paused, with the timing of someone sharing something slightly personal. "I want to understand what it means to be an Ardenis."
Something shifted in Calanthe's expression. Small — the kind of small that meant something real was moving underneath it.
"That's an odd thing for someone in your position to think about," she said.
"My position?"
Calanthe looked at her with the expression of someone deciding how honest to be. "You're the daughter of the third son," she said. "And your mother was—" she paused, with a delicacy that was, Liora noted, genuine rather than performative. "Your position in the family isn't— it isn't what mine is, or my brothers'."
"I know that," Liora said.
"Does it bother you?"
The question was asked with what appeared to be actual curiosity. Not cruelty — Liora had been on the receiving end of Calanthe's cruelty and knew its texture — but something more complicated. The curiosity of someone who had never thought to ask the question before and was now genuinely interested in the answer.
"Sometimes," Liora said, which was more honest than she had intended to be and was, she decided, probably correct. *Let her think she's gotten something real. She has, just not what she thinks.*
A sound from the direction of the north-facing windows — sharp, brief, the particular sound of something hitting glass and falling.
Liora turned.
The bird was on the stone ledge below the window, a small brown thing with its wings at the wrong angle, still and then not still — she could feel it from where she sat, the warmth of it dimming in the particular way she was learning to recognize, the guttering quality of a small life running toward its edges.
She wanted to go to it. The channel opened before she had decided to open it, the warmth of the bloodline rising in response to proximity to something damaged, and she—
Stopped.
She felt the stopping physically, the way you felt the stopping of something that had been moving. The channel stayed at the edge — not closed, not open, held in the specific suspension of someone standing in a doorway who had not yet decided which way to go.
The bird's warmth continued to dim.
She looked at it and did not move and did not let the channel do what it wanted to do, and beside her Calanthe was watching, not the bird but her.
"Poor thing," Calanthe said, after a moment.
"Yes," Liora said.
The bird died. She felt it happen — the specific quality of the warmth going out, small and complete, the way a candle flame went out. She sat with that and kept her face still and did not do any of the things her bloodline was suggesting she do.
Calanthe was still watching her.
"You have an odd expression," she said. "When you look at it."
"I don't like things dying," Liora said, which was true, and simple, and entirely sufficient.
Calanthe looked at her for another moment with the not-quite-readable expression. Then she looked away, back toward the garden, and the moment passed.
She spent the next twenty minutes giving Calanthe what she needed.
Not information about herself — nothing about the library work, nothing about Hessa, nothing about the trade review or the bloodline or the twelve-year plan that was currently operating in the background of every conversation she had. Nothing that could be used.
But the other things. The things Calanthe was actually hungry for, underneath the assessing and the positioning and the careful watchfulness.
Who Aldwin was currently paying attention to among the extended family. Which estate decisions had been made in the last quarter and which were still open. What the household staff thought of the various grandchildren — not gossip, but the particular quality of institutional opinion that was sometimes more accurate than official positions. The kind of information that said: *I see how this household works, and I'm willing to share that with you.*
She gave Calanthe the outline of the map without any of the points that mattered.
And Calanthe, who was twelve and genuinely intelligent and had not yet learned that intelligence was not the same as being unteachable, received it with the slight relaxation of someone whose hunger had been partially addressed.
When she left, she walked with less of the deliberate casualness she'd arrived with — more naturally, as though she had come for something and gotten enough of it to justify the trip.
*Good*, Liora thought, watching her go. *Come back. Keep coming back. Bring your questions here instead of to someone who might give you something I'd rather you didn't have.*
She did not particularly enjoy this. It was necessary, and she was good at it, and she would keep doing it — but she noted, as she always tried to note these things, that management was not the same as relationship, and that she was doing the former while possibly foreclosing the latter.
She would think about that later. For now: managed.
Mae found her before dinner.
"I asked Cook," she said, in the tone she used for things she had quietly completed. "About the boy."
They were in the upstairs corridor, outside Liora's room, and Mae had the expression of someone delivering a small report — organized, efficient, requiring nothing beyond the delivery.
"His name is Pell," she said. "Pell Farro. His father is Conn Farro, works the north-facing fields — good worker, quiet, been with the estate twelve years. His mother does fine needlework. She takes orders from the household sometimes." A pause. "Pell is the eldest of four. He helps his father on the fields before and after his schooling hours." Another pause, slightly different in quality. "Cook says he fixed the kitchen garden fence last spring when the regular carpenter was ill. She says she didn't ask him to. He just saw it needed doing."
Liora looked at her.
Mae looked back with the expression that was becoming familiar — the one that said she had paid more attention than strictly required and was prepared to have done so.
"Thank you," Liora said.
"Yes, miss."
She went to bed that night with the name sitting in her mind alongside everything else. Pell Farro. Twelve years old, eldest of four, fixed things because they needed fixing without being asked. The kind of person who moved through the world solving problems that weren't officially his to solve, and who would, in the absence of someone paying attention, spend the rest of his life doing it for wages that did not reflect what he was worth.
She knew something about that.
She added his name to the list that did not exist anywhere except in the part of her mind that kept records, and went to sleep.
She saw the letter at half past ten.
She had been returning from the library — a late visit, later than she usually allowed herself, because she had been following a thread in the bloodline histories that kept producing more thread. She had taken the back corridor, the one that ran behind the east wing and was used primarily by household staff in the mornings and abandoned by everyone in the evenings.
Vorian was at the far end, near the side entrance that opened onto the courtyard where the messenger horses were stabled overnight.
She stopped in the shadow of the corridor junction and watched.
He was handing something to a man she didn't recognize — not estate staff, not household, the particular look of someone hired for a specific errand rather than general employ. The envelope was thick, sealed with dark wax, and the seal—
She was too far to read it. She was exactly close enough to see its shape.
She had seen that shape before, in Ser Aldric's folder, on the letter fragment with the three sentences and the signature. The particular design of an older branch of the imperial house, the one that had been sidelined when the current Emperor's grandfather had consolidated power. The branch that had every reason to want certain things to remain unknown.
The messenger took the letter and left through the side entrance.
Vorian stood for a moment in the corridor, looking at nothing in particular, with the expression of a man who had done something he had been thinking about doing for a while and was now assessing whether he felt better or worse for having done it.
Then he turned and went back toward the main wing.
Liora stood in the shadow of the corridor junction for a long time after he was gone.
She had known, from the letter fragment, that someone in the palace had wanted the Witherborn records buried. She had known that the knowledge was deliberate, that the confinement had been managed rather than abandoned. She had understood, in the abstract way that you understood things when you assembled them from old documents and late-night cross-referencing, that there was a network of interest in keeping Kaelis Veren in his tower and keeping the truth about what he was out of any history that could be read.
She had not understood that the network reached into her own house.
She thought about the sealed records. She thought about a boy in a tower who had been told, his entire life, that he was the danger — while the people maintaining the danger were writing letters in the corridors of his own family's estate, sealing them with dark wax, sending them off into the night.
She thought: *how long has Vorian been writing these letters?*
She thought: *what does he want from them?*
She thought: *what are they offering him?*
She stood in the corridor until she was certain Vorian was not coming back, and then she went to her room, and she lay in the dark with the World Tree carving above her and her wrist warm against the blanket, and she thought about all the ways a plan could be more complicated than it looked when you first made it.
Four years, she had been telling herself. Four years and she would be ready.
She was beginning to think four years might not be the problem.
She was beginning to think the problem was already in the house.
