The disagreement started before the Conductor appeared.
They had been in the system for forty minutes, and Kai had a plan, and Mina had a modification to the plan, and the modification and the plan were not compatible.
"Noel's carriage is in the deep corridor," Kai said. "We need the structural map before we go in. If we enter a deep-system loop-toa without knowing the signal architecture around it, we won't be able to interrupt the sequence without risking collapse."
"I understand the risk," Mina said. "But his star was dimmer tonight than last night. I watched it in the Starfield Carriage on the way through. We have maybe two, three more sessions before it goes too dark to reach."
"Which is exactly why we can't afford to go in wrong."
"And I'm saying we can't afford to wait."
They were standing at a junction, three branches splitting ahead of them, and the argument had the quality of their first real disagreement: two people who were both right, standing at a point where both kinds of rightness could not simultaneously be honored.
Kai looked at the left branch. The signal strips ran cooler there, the blue-tinted light that indicated proximity to the system's deeper architecture. Noel's carriage was down that corridor, he knew. He had been mapping toward it for two sessions now, building the structural picture with the patience of someone who had learned that patience in a technical system was not the same as delay.
But Mina was also right. He had seen the star too.
"Give me forty minutes," he said. "Let me complete the structural map for that corridor cluster. Then we go to Noel."
"Forty minutes is a third of our window."
"I know."
She looked at him. The focused, unperformative assessment. He had come to recognize this look as the version of her that was working hardest: not the brisk clinical efficiency, not the careful deliberate speech, but the underneath of all of it, the person who was genuinely trying to find the right answer and was not going to accept a wrong one just because it was available.
"Thirty," she said.
"Forty."
"Thirty-five."
He almost smiled. He did not quite. "Thirty-five," he agreed.
She held up her watch — or the version of a watch that existed here, which kept time in ways he did not fully understand but which appeared to be approximately accurate. "Starting now."
He went to work.
The structural mapping of the deep corridor cluster took him thirty-one minutes, which was faster than he had expected and was the result of having two sessions of accumulated context to work from. The system's architecture was not random: it had the logic of a network designed by people who understood networks, which meant it was predictable once you understood the design principles, and he was understanding the design principles with each session.
What he found in the deep corridor was not what he had expected.
The loop-toas down there were different from the ones in the upper corridors. Older, somehow — he could read the age in the signal signature, the slight degradation that came from extended operation. These were the people from the earliest trial runs. The ones who had been here longest. Their stars in the Starfield Carriage sky were the dimmest, the ones he had been most urgently tracking.
Noel's carriage was at the end of the deep corridor. And beside it, in a configuration he had not seen elsewhere in the system, was a secondary carriage that the signal map showed as connected to Noel's — not a separate loop but an extension of the same one, as if the system had needed more space to contain whatever was cycling there.
He filed this. He did not yet understand what it meant.
"Time," Mina said.
"Ready," he said.
They moved to the deep corridor.
The Conductor appeared at the second junction.
Not the standard model — the larger one, the Conductor Prime, which had been tracking them since the Starfield Carriage. It was positioned at the junction with the deliberate stillness of something that had been waiting rather than patrolling, which told him it had anticipated their route. Which meant the system was learning their patterns.
He processed this in the three seconds it took to assess the situation: one exit blocked, two remaining branches, the branch to Noel's carriage to the left and a service corridor to the right that his map showed looping back to the upper system.
"Right," he said.
"Noel is left," Mina said.
"I know. Right first."
She moved right. He moved right. The Conductor Prime moved left — toward Noel's carriage, he noted, which was information he was going to need to think about later — and they ran.
The service corridor was narrow and lower-ceilinged than the main corridors, the signal strips intermittent rather than continuous, the system's housekeeping infrastructure rather than its primary architecture. Kai navigated it by the signal map in his head, which was imperfect down here but sufficient, and Mina ran behind him with the wordless trust she had been extending to his navigation since the first night, the trust that he was aware of and was careful not to take for granted.
They emerged into a side platform — a smaller version of the main platform, unused, the tracks here running into darkness in both directions without the star-sky overhead. A waiting room without the sky. A room that the system had built and then not connected to anything.
They stopped.
Mina was breathing fast. He was breathing fast. The Conductor Prime was not immediately behind them — he could not hear its loop-voice, which meant they had at least a minute before it found the service corridor.
"It went toward Noel's carriage," Mina said.
"Yes."
"It knew where we were going."
"Yes."
She looked at him. "It's not just patrolling anymore. It's intercepting."
"The system has identified us as a threat to specific assets," he said. "Noel's carriage is one of them. It will station the primary protective process at the most vulnerable point."
"Which means we can't get to him directly."
"Not the way we've been trying."
She was quiet for a moment. He recognized this quiet too: the processing kind, the kind that preceded a reframing rather than a conclusion.
"What if we go around it?" she said. "Not through the junction. Is there another path to the deep corridor?"
He looked at his map. The internal architecture of the system, as he had been building it: the junctions, the signal points, the service corridors like the one they had just used. He looked for an alternate route to the deep corridor cluster that did not pass through the junction the Conductor Prime had positioned itself at.
There was one. Longer, through the secondary platform and down a maintenance access he had mapped but not yet physically confirmed. Uncertain. Possible.
"There might be a maintenance route," he said. "I haven't verified it."
"Can you verify it now?"
He looked at the side platform. The signal strips on the floor here were different from the main system — thinner, more intermittent, but running in a direction that matched his map's prediction of where the maintenance access should be. He could read it. Imperfectly. Enough.
"I can try," he said.
She looked at him with the expression that was not quite a smile but was adjacent to one: the specific expression of a person who had decided to trust someone else's read of their own domain and was at peace with the decision.
"Then try," she said.
He spent eight minutes on the signal strips, cross-referencing what he was reading against what his map predicted, adjusting the map where the prediction was wrong. Mina stood watch at the entrance to the service corridor, monitoring for the Conductor Prime's approach. They did not speak during this process, which was not tension but the comfortable absence of unnecessary words: two people who had reached, over the past sessions, a shared understanding of when silence was the correct mode.
He found the access point.
"Got it," he said. "It will take us around the junction. It's slower — we'll lose maybe twenty minutes. And we'll be in unmapped territory for part of it."
"Unmapped meaning what?"
"Meaning I'll be reading as we go rather than from a prepared map. It's navigable but not certain."
Mina came back from the corridor entrance and stood beside him, looking at the access point he had identified: a door in the side platform wall that looked identical to the service corridor door they had come through, but which the signal strips indicated led somewhere different.
"We've been going into uncertain territory since the first night," she said.
"This is more uncertain than usual."
"I know."
She looked at him, and he looked at her, and it was one of the moments that had been accumulating over the course of these nights: a moment where the decision was made not by one person but by the space between two people, the product of the combined weight of what they each brought to the junction.
"Together or not at all," she said. The rule they had established.
"Together," he confirmed.
He opened the door.
The maintenance route was darker than the main system and quieter, and they moved through it with the careful attention of people who understood that unmapped did not mean safe, only unknown. Kai read the signal strips as they went, adjusting his internal map, calling the turns. Mina matched his pace and trusted his navigation and was, he was aware, making a continuous active choice to do so rather than simply defaulting to it.
That distinction mattered to him.
Three junctions. Two access points. One moment where the signal strips went briefly dark and he had to stop and wait for them to reset before he could read the next direction.
In that moment of stillness, in the dark corridor, Mina said: "You were right about the map. I should have given you the forty minutes."
"You were right about Noel. The urgency was real."
"We were both right."
"Yes," he said. "That's going to keep happening."
"I know." A pause. "I'm not used to both being right. In the ward, I usually just have to be right."
"Same," he said.
The strips came back up. He read them. They kept moving.
At the end of the maintenance route, a door: and beyond it, when he opened it, the beginning of the deep corridor, accessed from a different junction than the one the Conductor Prime was guarding.
They were in.
Mina looked at the deep corridor ahead of them — the cooler signal light, the older architecture, the sense of depth that the upper corridors didn't have. Then she looked at him.
"Thirty-five minutes," she said. "You were right too."
He nodded. He looked at the corridor that led to Noel's carriage and everything near it.
"Now we go," he said.
They did not reach Noel that night.
What they found in the deep corridor was more complex than either of them had anticipated, and the complexity required time they did not have, and the time constraint was the hard wall that the night kept running them into regardless of how well they navigated everything else.
The deep corridor held six loop-toas in the cluster nearest the maintenance access point. Kai had not mapped them in detail from the outside — they were further in than his signal readings had resolved clearly — and when he saw them from the inside he understood why the system had nested them here rather than in the upper corridors: these were the most significant loops, the highest-value harvesting targets, the memories that produced the strongest emotional residue and therefore required the most processing infrastructure around them.
Stronger loops meant harder intervention.
He and Mina worked through two of them in the time remaining. The first was a man in his seventies whose loop was anchored to the death of a child — the kind of grief that had no bottom, that the system had apparently decided was worth cycling indefinitely because the emotional output never diminished. Mina was in the loop for twenty-two minutes, the longest single intervention she had done, and when she came out she was white around the mouth in a way that had nothing to do with physical exhaustion.
Kai had been at the signal junction for twenty-two minutes, maintaining the interrupt he had built into the loop's cycling sequence, which required sustained attention rather than the two-second burst that simpler loops needed. He had held it. His hands, when she emerged, were slightly less steady than usual.
She looked at him. He looked at her.
"Are you all right?" he said.
"No," she said. "But I will be. Are you?"
"No," he said. "Same."
It was, he thought, the most honest exchange they had had. No qualification, no professional maintenance of competence-as-surface. Just the truth, stated plainly, from two people who were doing something that cost something and had decided to tell the truth about the cost.
He appreciated it more than he could have easily explained.
The second loop was shorter: a woman trapped in a conversation she wished she had handled differently, the loop-point the exact moment she had chosen silence instead of speech and spent the rest of the interaction regretting it. Mina got her out in nine minutes. The star brightened.
After the second rescue, the pre-dawn light was already beginning to change.
"We're out of time," Kai said.
"I know." She looked toward the deeper section of the corridor, where Noel's carriage waited. "Tomorrow."
"Tomorrow," he confirmed.
They took the maintenance route back. Faster this time, because he knew it now, the map completed by the having-been-there. Mina moved beside him rather than behind him, which was a shift she had made somewhere in the past hour without announcement, and which he noted as the kind of detail that accumulated meaning with repetition.
In the holding carriage, with ten minutes left before morning, they sat at opposite ends of the seating and were quiet for a while. Outside, the system ran its late-cycle operations. The stars above, visible through the window, held their various states of brightness.
Mina spoke first. "Eight more in the upper corridors. Six in the deep cluster that we can probably reach. And Noel."
"And Terminal Zero," he said. "We still haven't been inside. We need to understand what we're going to be dealing with when we shut it down."
She nodded. She was looking at the window, not at him, which was sometimes how she processed: by looking at something neutral and letting the thinking happen in the foreground of a stable background.
"The Conductor Prime intercepted us tonight," she said. "It’s adapting."
"Yes."
"Which means we need to adapt faster."
"The maintenance route gives us an alternate path. I need to map the secondary access points for the rest of the deep corridor. There will be more of them."
"When do you do that? You can't do it from outside."
"Tonight, if we're going again. I'll prioritize mapping over rescues in the first hour."
She turned from the window. "That's going to cost us rescue time."
"I know. But without the map, we'll keep hitting the same wall."
She looked at him. The processing quiet. Then: "Okay. First hour, map. Then we go for Noel."
He felt something settle at the word *okay* that he noted and did not immediately examine. The particular quality of being heard and credited, which was different from being agreed with. He was accustomed to being agreed with, in technical matters, because he was usually right in technical matters. Being heard was a different thing. It involved a different part of the exchange.
"Tomorrow," he said.
"Tomorrow," she agreed.
The morning came for them at the same moment, the system's reset cycling through the holding carriage in a wave that Kai had come to recognize by its texture: the slight dissolution of certainty, the softening of the edges of the night's events, the particular loss that happened when you knew something was being taken and could not stop it.
He thought, in the last coherent moment: the maintenance route. The two stars. Her voice saying *okay* in the dark corridor.
The morning took everything but the echo.
He woke on the train.
He sent the signal sequence before he opened his eyes.
He did not know why this felt important. He sent it anyway.
The morning at Narae Station had its specific texture: the 06:47 light, pale gold, coming through the arrival hall windows at an angle that caught the dust in the air and made it visible. Mina stood in the arrivals flow with her bag and her phone and the feeling, which was becoming familiar, of having misplaced something significant.
She had the phrase in the folder. She had the signal sequence in her messages. She had, in her grey notebook, a single line written in her own handwriting in the dark of the train pod before the morning fully arrived: *maintenance route, second junction, he was right about the map.*
She did not know what the maintenance route was. She did not know what the second junction referred to. She knew, reading the line, that she had written it in a state of knowing and that the knowing had not survived the morning intact.
She filed it. She added it to the shared folder with a timestamp.
On the bus home, she texted Kai: *I left myself a note. Maintenance route, second junction. Does that mean anything to you?*
His response came quickly: *Yes. Good. I'll explain tonight.*
Tonight. They were going again tonight. She knew this the way she knew the phrase: not from memory exactly but from the shape of the intention, which had survived in some form that was less than conscious and more than nothing.
She got home. She showered. She ate. She sat at her desk and worked on the documentation for two hours, adding the new case detail that Liora had sent overnight: one more family, one more name, one more person to add to the list that she was building toward something she could not yet fully see but was getting closer to every day.
At 10:00, a call from the hospital. A Starline patient in Bed Eight — not Joon Sera, a new admission — had shown unexpected improvement overnight: increased neural activity, pattern normalization, the attending reporting it as unexplained but positive.
Mina wrote the time in her notebook. She cross-referenced it against the shared folder timestamp for last night's session.
They matched, within the margin of the system's reset cycle.
She sat with that for a moment.
Then she texted Kai: *Another improvement overnight. Timed with our session. The correlation is holding.*
*I know,* he wrote back. *Which is why we keep going.*
She put her phone down and looked at her notes and thought about a man in Aureon Bay who sent her a seventeen-digit signal sequence every morning before he was fully awake, as if the signal were the thing his body defaulted to before his conscious mind had fully engaged.
She did not know what to do with this observation. She was building a category for it, slowly, the way she built categories for things that did not fit the existing ones: carefully, without forcing, letting the shape emerge from the accumulation of evidence rather than imposing it from the outside.
She went to sleep at 11:00, because she needed the hours before the next train, and she slept without dreaming, and when she woke at 18:30 the first thing she did was check the shared folder.
New entry from Kai, added at 14:22: *Mapped three secondary access points from the signal data. I think I can get us to the deep corridor from two directions now. Tonight we go for Noel.*
She read it twice.
*Tonight we go for Noel.*
She got up and started getting ready for the station.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The disagreement started before the Conductor appeared.
They had been in the system for forty minutes, and Kai had a plan, and Mina had a modification to the plan, and the modification and the plan were not compatible.
"Noel's carriage is in the deep corridor," Kai said. "We need the structural map before we go in. If we enter a deep-system loop-toa without knowing the signal architecture around it, we won't be able to interrupt the sequence without risking collapse."
