Dain was already at the table when she arrived, which meant he had been there long enough to order her coffee.
This was the kind of thing he did. Small anticipatory gestures, calibrated to the precise frequency of what counted as thoughtful without requiring him to have asked. He knew she drank Americano after night shifts, oat milk, no sugar. He had known this for two years and he deployed the knowledge with the consistency of someone who understood that consistency was a form of argument.
Mina sat down across from him and wrapped both hands around the cup.
“How was the shift?” he asked.
“Long.”
“You should have texted me. I would have picked you up.”
“You had early rounds.”
“I would have managed.” He said it with a smile that was warm and slightly reproachful in equal measure, the smile of someone who was used to being told not to go out of his way and had decided not to take it personally. Dain Voss had many expressions in this register: warm-and-slightly-reproachful, warm-and-slightly-concerned, warm-and-slightly-tired-of-having-to-say-this-again. They were all very convincing. She had spent two years finding them convincing.
This morning, in the particular clarity of post-shift exhaustion, she noticed the calibration.
She said nothing about it. She drank her coffee.
“How’s the ward?” he asked.
“Busy. We had a strange admission last night.” She hesitated, because the habit of talking to Dain about work was two years old and well-worn, and habits were hard to interrupt even when you were paying attention. “Patient in altered consciousness after a Starline trial. The neural monitoring device malfunctioned.”
Something moved across Dain’s face. She had learned to read him in high resolution — the small recalibrations he made when a conversation moved into territory he was tracking. He smoothed it before most people would have noticed it.
Mina noticed it.
“Starline,” he said, with the tone of mild professional interest that neurologists used when another specialty stumbled into their territory. “That’s the overnight sleep train, isn’t it? They’re doing trials.”
“Apparently. The patient was listed as a research participant.”
“What kind of monitoring device?”
“Neural. Sleep study protocol. Not standard for the emergency ward — it was brought down specifically.”
“Hm.” He lifted his own cup. “You should rest, Mina. You’ve been doing extra shifts. Your body will start to push back.”
And just like that, the conversation was over. Not ended — redirected. The way water redirected around an obstacle it didn’t want to engage with. Smooth, frictionless, plausible. She was tired. He was concerned. The logical conclusion was that she should rest, and the concern was the vehicle for arriving there.
Mina drank her coffee and looked at him.
He was objectively handsome, in the way that certain people were objectively handsome — not striking, not unconventional, but arranged in a combination that the eye found easy and the brain classified as trustworthy. Dark hair kept neat. Clothes that fit correctly. The kind of face that photographed well in group shots, that colleagues described as *professional* and patients described as *reassuring*. He had built a reputation in the neurology department on that face and on the genuine intelligence behind it, and the reputation was deserved. He was good at his work.
She knew this. She had known it when she fell in love with him, and she still knew it now, sitting across from him in the gray morning with the coffee going lukewarm between her palms and the feeling of having noticed something she could not un-notice.
His phone was face-down on the table.
This was not new. He kept his phone face-down during meals, during conversations, during any interaction that he wanted to frame as attentive. She had, at some earlier point, found this considerate. At some later point she had stopped examining whether she still found it considerate.
She found herself examining it now.
“Are you working today?” she asked.
“Morning rounds, then a consult at two. I should be done by six.” He glanced at his watch — the watch she had given him, last year, because he had mentioned once that he preferred analog. “Do you want to have dinner? Somewhere quiet. You look like you need quiet.”
“Maybe.”
He looked at her for a moment with the warm-and-slightly-concerned expression. “You’re doing it again.”
“Doing what.”
“The thing where you go somewhere in your head and don’t tell me where.”
She thought about this. It was accurate, in a narrow technical sense. She was somewhere in her head. She was in the memory of a blue light running up a cable and into her hand, and a starlit station where someone had been standing across a distance she could not measure, and the feeling of having missed something she had not known she was waiting for.
She was not going to tell him where.
“I’m just tired,” she said.
Dain's phone lit up.
It was face-down, as always, so she only saw the glow from underneath — a brief brightening of the tablecloth, a half-second of white light before the screen went dark again. Dain did not reach for it. He did not do anything different at all. His expression stayed exactly as it was: warm-and-slightly-concerned, oriented toward her.
The coffee place was not loud. She could hear the table behind them, the milk steamer at the bar. She had been awake for twenty-two hours.
She looked at the phone on the table between them. Face-down. Glowing. Not glowing.
Dain had always kept his phone face-down as a gesture of attention. She had always found it considerate. She had found it considerate for so long that she had stopped asking why he never turned it face-up again when the conversation was over, the way most people did without thinking.
"You're exhausted," he said. "Go home."
He reached across the table and covered her hand with his. His hand was warm, his grip the practiced weight of someone who had learned that physical contact communicated care in a register that words sometimes missed. “Go home and sleep. I’ll call you before the consult.”
She nodded. She did not turn her hand over.
She had been home for two hours — had showered, had eaten something she would not remember later, had moved through her apartment with the efficient automation of a person who had learned to complete domestic tasks in a partial sleep state — when she found herself sitting on the edge of her bed with her phone in her hand, looking at the word she had typed into the search bar.
*Starline sleep train.*
The results were what she expected: the company website, the glossy promotional content, the carefully managed press coverage of the trial runs. Sleep through the distance. Wake up where you belong. Photographs of well-rested passengers stepping off the train into morning light, their faces composed in expressions of serene arrival. The aesthetic of an advertisement that knew it was selling something people wanted to want.
She scrolled past it. She was looking for something that was not in the promotional materials.
She found it in a forum thread three pages into the results: a post from six weeks ago, three paragraphs, no username attached, describing a trial-run passenger who had not woken up on schedule. The post had four replies, all from accounts with no history, all variations of *probably just sleep inertia, it happens*. The original post had not responded. The thread had gone quiet.
Mina read it twice.
She found two more threads, both older, both similarly quiet. One described a participant who had woken from a trial run with significant short-term memory loss. One described a participant whose family said he had “not been himself” after a commercial run, that his emotional responses had been flat in a way that had not resolved in three weeks.
The threads were thin. The evidence was anecdotal, unverified, the kind of thing that lived at the bottom of search results because it did not have the weight of documentation behind it. Mina knew the difference between a pattern and a collection of coincidences. She also knew that the difference was sometimes very difficult to determine from inside the data.
She put her phone on the nightstand.
She lay down.
She did not intend to dream but she did anyway, in the light sleep of extreme exhaustion where the boundary between thinking and dreaming became permeable. The station again. The stars. The other platform. This time she walked toward the edge of her platform and looked down at the tracks and the tracks were real — steel rails on concrete ties, the engineering of a thing built to carry weight — and when she looked up again the man on the opposite platform was closer. Not close enough to see clearly. But close enough that she could tell he was looking at her.
She raised her hand.
He raised his.
The train came.
She woke with her arm half-extended toward the ceiling, reaching for something that was not there.
The room was bright with afternoon. She had slept for four hours. On her phone: a missed call from Dain at 13:47, a text that said *calling you before the consult, pick up next time*, a notification from the hospital scheduling system about her next shift.
She looked at the missed call for a moment.
Then she opened her notebook — the small grey one she kept on the nightstand, the one she used for thoughts that did not fit into any of the official documentation she maintained as part of her professional life — and wrote, in the careful block print she used when she wanted to be precise:
*Third dream. Same station. Same person on the opposite platform. He raised his hand when I raised mine. This is either a stress response or something else. I don’t know which.*
She looked at it.
Then she wrote, underneath:
*Starline. Park Sungwoo. Neural monitoring device. Blue light. The same blue.*
She closed the notebook.
She called the hospital. She asked the day nurse on the emergency ward how Park Sungwoo was doing.
“No change,” the nurse said. “He’s been moved upstairs. Neurology took over the case this morning.”
Neurology. Dain’s department.
Mina sat with the phone in her hand for a long moment after she ended the call. She thought about the way Dain’s face had moved when she said *Starline*. The small recalibration, smoothed before most people would see it.
She thought about Park Sungwoo, lying in a sleep that looked wrong, transferred to the department of a man she had just been sitting across from in a cafe.
She thought about her own name in the hospital’s access logs, appearing at 02:00 in the morning when she had been asleep.
She had not looked at that yet. The thought arrived fully formed, the way important thoughts sometimes did — not gradually assembled from smaller pieces but whole, presenting itself for acknowledgment. She had seen the access timestamp when she was updating the incident report, had registered it as anomalous, had filed it in the part of her mind that said *return to this when you are not in the middle of something else*.
She was not in the middle of something else now.
She opened her laptop.
It took her fifteen minutes to find the access log through the hospital’s resident portal — the system was not designed for easy self-review, which was itself a design choice she had noted and set aside. When she found it, she read through the entries for the previous night twice.
Her account had accessed four patient files between 01:58 and 02:34. One of them was Park Sungwoo. The other three were patients she did not recognize from her shift — names she did not know, cases she had not touched.
At 01:58, she had been asleep in the on-call room.
Mina closed the laptop slowly. She sat in the afternoon light of her apartment and felt the shape of something she had been not-looking-at for longer than she wanted to admit taking on definition.
Not now, she told herself. Not with four hours of sleep and a shift in fourteen hours and the specific fog of a mind that had been operating at its limits for too long. Not yet.
But soon.
She picked up her notebook again. Beneath what she had already written, she added one more line:
*Someone used my account while I was sleeping.*
She looked at the line for a moment. Then she looked at Dain’s text on her phone. *Pick up next time.*
She put the notebook back on the nightstand, face-down.
She went to make tea, and she stood in her kitchen in the afternoon light, and she did not call him back.
The tea went cold while she was still standing there.
She had a habit, which she recognized as a habit, of treating certainty as something that needed to be fully assembled before it could be acted on. It had served her well in medicine: you did not call a code without the data to support it, you did not make a diagnosis on a hunch, you waited for the complete picture before you committed to a course of action. In the emergency ward, this was professionalism. In her personal life, she was beginning to understand, it sometimes looked like something else.
It looked like a woman standing in her kitchen with cold tea, knowing something she was not ready to say out loud.
She poured the tea down the drain and made a fresh cup and took it to the window. Her apartment was on the fourteenth floor of a building in the Seon district, chosen for the commute and the view: the hospital was twelve minutes on foot, and from the window she could see the curve of the Narae River and, on clear days, the mountains to the north. Today was not a clear day. Low cloud had come in during the afternoon, softening everything, making the city look like a sketch of itself rather than the thing itself.
She thought about Park Sungwoo in a hospital bed upstairs in neurology.
She thought about the other three patients whose files had been accessed from her account while she slept.
She thought about what it would mean to look more carefully at this. To follow the thread rather than file it under *unknown, pending*. She had been filing things under *unknown, pending* for — she counted, which she did not like doing — approximately eight months. The first time she had noticed that Dain’s phone was face-down on the table more often than it used to be. The first time she had thought *that’s odd* about something he said and then spent the drive home talking herself out of it.
The accumulation of small not-quite-rights.
She drank her tea.
At 17:30, her phone rang. Not Dain — a number she didn’t recognize, Aureon Bay area code.
She answered it because she always answered unknown numbers. Medical reflex.
“Is this Dr. Seol? Emergency ward, Narae City General?”
A woman’s voice. Young, precise, with the particular flatness of someone working hard to sound calm.
“Yes,” Mina said. “Who is this?”
“You treated a patient last night. Park Sungwoo. I’m — I know his family. I’ve been trying to find out what happened to him.” A pause. “I’m sorry to call directly. I couldn’t get through the official channels.”
Mina was already at her desk, opening her laptop. “I can’t discuss a patient’s medical information,” she said, which was true. “But I can ask how you got this number.”
“He had your name written in his notebook.” Another pause, shorter. “Not your name specifically — your description. He wrote: *the doctor who doesn’t sleep, Narae City General, she’ll understand about the train.*”
Mina stopped typing.
The afternoon light in her apartment was grey and still. Outside, the city moved through its distances. The monitor in front of her showed the hospital portal, the access log, the four entries from 01:58 to 02:34.
*The doctor who doesn’t sleep.*
Park Sungwoo had been admitted in altered consciousness. He had been, as far as she could determine, insensible since arrival. He could not have written anything after he came through the emergency ward doors.
Which meant he had written it before. Which meant he had known, before something happened to him, that he was going to need a doctor in Narae City who would understand about a train.
“What train?” Mina said.
The woman on the other end of the call took a breath that sounded like relief, like someone who had been making the same argument to blank walls for long enough that any acknowledgment felt like a door opening.
“The 00:17,” she said. “The Starline overnight. Something is happening to the people who sleep on it. And I think you already know that. I think that’s why he wrote your name down.”
Mina sat in her apartment with the cold tea and the open laptop and the list of names in the access log, and she thought about the station in her dreams, and the man on the other platform, and the specific loneliness of a sky full of stars.
“Tell me your name,” she said.
“Liora Vale,” the woman said. “My brother is in a coma at Aureon Bay General. He’s been there for three months. He was also on the 00:17.”
Mina pulled her notebook toward her. She opened it to the page with her careful block print and looked at the line she had written last: *Someone used my account while I was sleeping.*
She turned to the next blank page.
“Start from the beginning,” she said.
She wrote for forty minutes. Liora talked; Mina wrote. Not everything — Liora’s voice had the quality of someone who had been carrying more than they could efficiently transmit in a single call, and Mina was aware that what she was receiving was a summary, the outline of a larger account that she would need to approach more carefully and in more than one session. But the shape of it came through.
Noel Vale, seventeen years old, had been selected as a participant in the Starline overnight sleep trial through a school wellness program that Liora described with a flatness that conveyed what she thought of it without her having to say so. He had taken one trip on the 00:17 test run. He had not woken up.
The official explanation was *unexpected sleep inertia*, a condition that existed in the literature and was being treated by the Aureon Bay General neurology team with appropriate protocols. The unofficial situation, which Liora had assembled over three months from partial information and blocked access and the careful lateral thinking of someone with no institutional power and no plan to let that stop her, was that Noel was one of at least seven participants from the early trial runs who had not woken up. That the Starline company had been managing the cases quietly, through partner hospitals, with settlements offered to families before questions could be formally asked. That the neural technology at the heart of the sleep system was doing something to the passengers that the company had not publicly disclosed.
Mina looked at her notes when Liora was done.
“You said my name was in your brother’s notebook,” she said.
“Yes.”
“He wrote it before the trial run?”
“Two days before. He wrote several things. Most of it I understood. That entry I didn’t.” A pause. “Until last night, when I found Park Sungwoo’s family and they said the doctor who admitted him was Dr. Seol at Narae City General.”
Mina thought about a seventeen-year-old boy writing a name in a notebook two days before something happened to him. She thought about what it meant to know, in advance, that you would need someone specific. She thought about the forum threads she had read that afternoon, the thin trail of quiet reports.
“I’m going to look into some things,” she said. “I can’t promise what I’ll find. And I can’t do anything officially until I have more than I have right now.”
“I know,” Liora said. “I’ve been told that before.” She said it without bitterness, which was somehow worse than if she had said it with bitterness. It was the statement of someone who had accepted the architecture of the situation without being reconciled to it. “I’m also — there’s someone else. In Aureon. I’ve been trying to reach him. His name is Kai Arven. He works rail maintenance.”
Mina wrote the name down. “Why him?”
“Because the signals,” Liora said, as if this explained something. And then, when Mina did not respond immediately: “The anomalies in the Starline signal corridor. He’s been filing reports about them. And I think — I think he might be having the same dreams you are.”
Mina looked at what she had written in her notebook. *Third dream. Same station. Same person.*
She had not told Liora about the dreams.
“How do you know about the dreams?” she said.
“Noel wrote about them too,” Liora said. “Before the trial run. He wrote: there are people who can find each other in the signal. They just don’t know it yet.”
The apartment was very quiet. Outside, the clouds had lowered further, the city reduced to its essential lines.
Mina looked at the notebook in her hand, at all the things she had written in it, at the shape they made together. At the name she had written at the top of the new page: *Kai Arven, Aureon Bay, rail maintenance.*
She did not know him. She was certain she did not know him.
She was equally certain, in a way that had no logic and did not need any, that she had stood across a set of tracks from him more than once.
“I’ll call you tomorrow,” she told Liora.
She ended the call. She sat in the dimming afternoon with her notebook and her cold cup and the access log still open on her laptop screen. She thought about the patient in Bed Four. She thought about the blue light and the frequency and the dream.
She thought about a boy who had written a stranger’s name in a notebook because he had somehow known she would be needed.
She did not call Dain back that evening.
She did not, she realized sitting there in the quiet apartment, particularly want to.
You've reached the end of this chapter
