The Selene documentation arrived on a Thursday afternoon in June.
Mina was at her desk when Jisoo forwarded it: the full Terminal Zero commercial archive that Selene had agreed to provide. The file was large. She opened it and began reading.
The first section was what they had expected: the commercial development timeline, the board communications, the financial projections. She had seen summaries of all of this. Having the full primary documents was different from having the summaries, but not surprising.
The second section was not what she had expected.
It was titled: *Autonomous Neural Link Analysis — Phase 3 Research Designations.*
She read the first paragraph and stopped.
She read it again.
She texted Kai: *Can you come over tonight? There’s a section in the Selene documentation I need you to look at.*
His reply in two minutes: *I’ll be there at 18:00.*
She spent the remaining afternoon reading the section. She read it three times. She noted the specific details. She flagged the relevant passages. She did not reach a conclusion until she had read it all the way through once more and confirmed that the conclusion was the one the text was pointing to.
At 18:00 exactly, he arrived.
She had the document open on the laptop. She had printed the relevant section. She handed him the print-out.
He read.
She watched him read with the specific attention he brought to documents that required full processing: the complete stillness, the occasional slight movement that indicated a passage was being re-read, the sequence of his attention moving through the text.
He reached the section she had flagged. He stopped.
He read it again.
He set the print-out on the table.
“We’re case studies,” he said.
“Yes,” she said.
“Case Study A and Case Study B.” He looked at the document. “High-value unauthorized link profiles.”
“The language is specific,” she said. “Neural background, professional domain, age range, link duration, link intensity, resistance to standard severing protocols.” She paused. “There’s no question it’s us.”
He was quiet for a moment.
“This document is dated,” he said.
“Yes. Eight weeks before our first session.”
He looked at her. The specific quality of his look when he was reassembling a model from new information: not shock, not distress, but the precise recalibration of someone updating a structural understanding.
“Soren told us he didn’t know about our specific case,” he said.
“This document predates our first session by two months,” she said. “Which means either Soren lied, or the research was running without his knowledge, or —” She paused. “Or the system identified us as a high-value link before we knew we were in the system, based on Bluefall exposure data.”
He looked at the document again. “The Bluefall window,” he said. “The exposure in the test corridor. The exposure in the emergency ward. The system was tracking frequency signatures from the hardware interaction before either of us boarded the 00:17.”
She had arrived at the same conclusion. She had been waiting to see if he arrived at it too.
“Yes,” she said. “The system identified our link before we identified it. Before we knew we had one.”
He was very still.
She thought about the Starfield Carriage, the two stars, the line between them, the Conductor Prime’s attention orienting toward the unauthorized link. She thought about the system having flagged this two months earlier, in a research document, as a case study worth tracking.
She thought about what it meant for a system to see something about two people before those people knew it about themselves.
“Noel wrote about the connection before the first session,” Kai said.
“Three days before,” she said. “He saw the resonance from the installation work. The system saw it from the hardware exposure data.”
“Both of them saw it before we did.”
“Yes.”
He looked at her. She looked back at him.
She thought about the word *Starline?* in an incident report, written before she knew why. She thought about Kai in Aureon Bay, tracking an anomaly he could not yet name. She thought about the frequency that had run up the cable and into her hand and done something she had not had a clinical term for.
She thought about being seen before she could see herself.
“This changes the case,” Kai said.
“Yes,” she said. “It means the research program was actively tracking unauthorized links as commercial assets, not just archiving them passively. They knew we were there. They were studying us.” She paused. “Our archive is not incidental. We were research subjects.”
“Without consent.”
“Without any awareness,” she said.
He was quiet.
She thought about the implications: for the case, for the archive claims, for the legal framework Jinhee was building. She thought about what it meant to have been studied without knowing you were being studied, what it meant to have the most private version of yourself — the neural activity during the sessions, the emotional link data, the resistance to severing — documented and classified and held in a commercial archive.
She thought about getting it back.
“We need to call Jisoo,” she said.
“Yes.”
“And Jinhee.”
“Yes.”
She picked up her phone.
He did not move yet. He was looking at the document with the expression of someone who was building a complete picture from a new angle: not distressed, not angry, but deeply focused. She recognized this mode. She waited.
He looked at her.
“The link was real,” he said. “The system studied it because it was real. Because it resisted the protocol that should have severed it.”
“Yes,” she said.
“They were trying to understand why it held.” He was quiet for a moment. “They couldn’t sever it. Not in the sessions and not after. The archive contains their attempts and our resistance.”
She thought about this.
She thought about Noel’s word: *load-bearing.*
She thought: the system tried to sever it because it did not understand what it was seeing. What it was seeing was the kind of connection that does not sever because it is not a secondary element. It is a structural one. You cannot remove a load-bearing element without collapsing the structure.
She did not say this. She held it.
“That archive belongs to us,” she said. “Whatever they were studying. Whatever they found. It belongs to us.”
“Yes,” he said. “We’re going to get it.”
She looked at him.
He looked back at her.
The document was on the table between them. The case had just shifted into a territory they had not anticipated: from institutional victims to research subjects, from thirty patients to thirty plus two, from the systemic to the specific.
The specific was them.
She thought: *this is what Act 4 was building toward.*
She thought: *now we know the full shape of what was taken.*
She thought: *now we know what we’re getting back.*
She called Jisoo.
The call lasted ninety minutes.
By the end of it, the case had a new dimension, and the litigation timeline had a new focus, and Mina and Kai had a specific legal claim that was distinct from the thirty patients and would require its own proceeding.
After the call, they sat in the apartment in the June evening.
“We didn’t know,” she said. “The whole time. We thought we were in the system working. We were also being studied.”
“Yes,” he said.
“How does that feel?”
He thought about it with the seriousness the question deserved. “Like finding a map of a place you thought you had navigated without one,” he said. “The navigation was real. The map was also real. Both of them existed at the same time.”
She thought about this.
“But we didn’t need the map,” she said.
“No,” he said. “We had the signal.”
She looked at him.
She thought about all of it: the frequency in the cable, the dreams, the station, the sessions, the record, the seven-minute window, all of it leading to this apartment in June with the harbor outside and the drawing in the window.
The system had studied them and had not understood what it was seeing.
What it was seeing was two people who had decided to find each other and had refused to stop.
Not a commercial asset.
Not a case study.
Two people.
Load-bearing.
“I want to see what’s in the archive,” she said.
“So do I,” he said.
“When we get it,” she said. “We read it together.”
He looked at her.
“Together,” he confirmed.
The harbor held its June lights.
The case had its new dimension.
The work was ongoing.
They were still in it.
They were still together.
The structure was holding.
It had always been going to hold.
The next morning, before the work began, she wrote in the ordinary record notebook.
She had been writing in it every day since January. Sometimes one line. Sometimes a paragraph. Always something: the specific record of what had been ordinary and what had been significant and what had been both at once.
She wrote: *June. The Selene documentation contains a research file. We are Case Study A and B. High-value unauthorized link profiles. The system was tracking us before we knew we were in the system. The archive exists. We are going to get it back.*
She paused.
She wrote: *I am thinking about what we were to the system: research subjects, commercial case studies, anomalies that resisted the expected protocol. And what we actually were: two people following a signal in the dark, finding each other, refusing to stop when the system said stop.*
She paused again.
She wrote: *The system studied us because it couldn’t understand why the link held. I think I understand why. Because it was already there before the system detected it. Because it wasn’t the system’s link. It was ours. You can’t harvest something that was never yours to harvest.*
She closed the notebook.
She looked at the harbor, which was doing its early June version: the light coming in warm, the water beginning its summer color, the specific quality of a harbor on the first warm mornings of the season.
She thought about the archive. She thought about reading it with him: the neural data from the sessions, the link analysis, whatever the system had found when it looked at what they had built. She thought about seeing themselves from the outside for the first time — the case study version of what she and Kai had done inside the system.
She thought: *we already know the truth of it.*
She thought: *the archive is the system’s version. We have ours.*
She thought: *our version is in three notebooks on a shelf and a drawing in a window and a photograph on a wall and the morning walk and the signal sequence and the ordinary record still being written.*
She thought: *that is more complete than anything the system captured.*
Kai appeared at the doorway. He had made coffee. He brought her a cup.
“Ready?” he said.
She looked at him.
She thought about the first time she had seen him clearly: through the train car, in the specific light of Starfield Line, the expression that was not closed but not offering anything. The watchful attention. The face of someone who looked at things before deciding what they meant.
She thought about all the things she knew about him now. The crossword at eighteen. The harbor in all its seasons. The way he stood slightly closer when she was tired. The specific quality of his silence when he was processing something important. The three words he had said in the legislative building lobby: *all right.*
She thought: *this is the full version.*
She thought: *this is what the system never had and never could have.*
“Ready,” she said.
She took the coffee.
They went to work.
The legal proceedings around the autonomous research file opened two weeks later.
Jinhee prepared the argument in seven days, which was fast even for her. She presented it to Mina and Kai over video call: the research file constituted an additional and distinct violation of the Neural Data Protection Act, separate from the thirty patient cases, because it documented active study of unauthorized neural links without consent for research purposes.
“This is a different kind of violation,” Jinhee said. “The thirty patients were harmed by the harvest. You two were additionally harmed by being studied. The research file has you both as documented subjects of an unauthorized neural link study.”
“What are we asking for?” Kai said.
“Full disclosure of the research file and all associated data. Deletion of the commercial case study designation. The research archive returned to you for your disposition.” Jinhee paused. “And an acknowledgment in the proceedings that the link was not a commercial asset. It was a personal connection between two people.”
Mina looked at Kai.
He looked at her.
“Yes,” Mina said. “All of that.”
“Good,” Jinhee said. “I’ll file the motion tomorrow.”
After the call, they sat in the apartment for a moment without speaking.
Mina thought about the research file. She thought about the system’s version of what she and Kai had been: two neural signatures with an anomalous link that resisted the expected protocol, studied for commercial potential. She thought about what it felt like to have that reduced to a case study number.
She thought about what it was going to feel like to have the case study designation removed.
“Personal connection between two people,” she said.
“Yes,” he said.
“That’s what Jinhee is going to argue.”
“Yes.”
She looked at him. She thought about all the words they had used for it over the past year: *partners,* in the board testimony. *Load-bearing,* from the first time. *The thing the structure rests on.* The phrases from the ordinary record, the entries in three notebooks, the specific accumulated language of two people building a life.
“Personal connection between two people,” she said again. “That’s a significant understatement.”
He looked at her with the expression. “For a legal document, it’s the right level of precision,” he said.
She smiled. “You’re very good at that.”
“At what?”
“At knowing the right level of precision for the context.”
He was quiet for a moment. “You are too,” he said. “It’s one of the first things I noticed.”
She thought about the first session. The record. The compressed entries, built against erasure, precise and efficient and no more than what was needed.
She thought about the ordinary record notebook, which was the opposite: expansive, noticing, more than necessary, built for the pleasure of having it.
Both were hers. Both were the right level of precision for their context.
“The archive,” she said. “When we get it.”
“We’ll read it together.”
“And then we decide what to do with it,” she said.
“Yes.” He paused. “Jinhee asked if we wanted to include the research file in the public record or request it be sealed.”
She thought about this. “What do you think?”
He thought. “Sealed,” he said. “The research file documents our neural link. That’s ours. Not a public matter.”
“Sealed,” she agreed.
She thought: *the system’s version of us, sealed and in our hands.*
She thought: *the ordinary record, open, still being written.*
She thought: *both of those things are true.*
She thought: *we get to decide what’s private and what’s held.*
She thought: *that’s part of what load-bearing means.*
“The work continues,” she said.
“Yes,” he said.
“Act 4 close,” she said. Not aloud — to herself, the frame she had been building since the Terminal Zero documentation arrived. Act 4 had been the investigation deepening, the stakes raising, the discovery that they were not just witnesses but subjects. And now the close: the discovery received, the legal response initiated, the choice made to seal the research file and keep what was theirs.
The close was not resolution.
It was the ground for what came next.
She thought: *Act 5 will be different.*
She thought: *Act 5 will be about getting it back.*
The harbor held its June lights.
The work was ongoing.
She was ready for the next phase.
The filing went in the following morning.
Mina was in the ward when Jisoo sent the confirmation. She read it between patients, in the nursing station, with the same quality of attention she brought to everything that arrived during a shift: complete but not consuming, present but not at the expense of the work.
The motion was filed.
The archive would come back to them.
The case study designation would be removed.
The legal record would reflect what the system had never been able to understand: not a commercial asset. A personal connection between two people.
She put her phone in her pocket and went back to her patient.
The patient was a woman in her fifties with a presenting complaint that was, in the initial assessment, more complex than it appeared. She focused on the complexity. She ran through the differential. She asked the questions that the complexity required.
She was good at this work.
She had always been good at this work.
The filing was in the world. The archive was coming back. The case was ongoing. The work was ongoing.
She was exactly where she was supposed to be.
She was, and always had been, the person who followed the signal.
The signal was still there.
She was still following.
The ordinary record continued.
At the end of her shift, she texted Kai: *Filing confirmed. The motion is in.*
His reply: *I know. I’ve been reading the motion document.*
*Of course you have,* she said.
*It’s precise,* he said. *Jinhee is very good.*
*She is,* Mina agreed. *Come over. I’ll make dinner.*
His reply: *I’ll be there at 18:30.*
She drove home through the June evening, and the city was doing its summer version, and the harbor was visible in the distance, and she thought about the archive that was coming back and the case that was ongoing and the life that contained both.
She thought: *Act 5 will tell us what we find when we get the archive.*
She thought: *I am ready to find out.*
She was ready for all of it.
You've reached the end of this chapter
