Julie Lin opened her eyes.
The ceiling above her wasn't the water-stained plaster she knew from her two-hundred-square-foot studio apartment down a narrow alley back home. It was a gilded Rococo dome, hand-painted with looping floral scrollwork, a crystal chandelier hanging directly above her like it was waiting for the perfect moment to fall on someone unlucky. The air smelled of expensive scented candles, nothing like the instant noodles and drip coffee she'd grown used to during three years of graveyard shifts.
Her first reaction wasn't to scream. Three years as a QA tester had trained a different reflex into her: when the interface doesn't match your expectations, don't panic — log the symptoms methodically before you even think about filing a bug report. She lay still for a moment, eyes fixed on the unfamiliar ceiling, and started making a list.
Symptom one: this body was lighter than her old one, the fingers longer and more slender, and there was an emerald ring, heavy as a paperweight, sitting on her ring finger that she definitely hadn't bought on a QA tester's salary.
Symptom two: tangled in with her own thoughts was a second layer of memory that hadn't been there before — smooth as a well-compressed video file, complete with a name, a birthdate, a list of acquaintances, and a vague, almost instinctive hatred aimed at one particular name: Vanessa Sterling.
Symptom three — and this was the one that actually got her bolt upright in the silk sheets — she remembered reading this story. One night, waiting for a build to finish deploying to staging at two in the morning, she'd skimmed it on her phone in a coworker's group chat labeled "romance novels to turn your brain off with." She couldn't remember the title anymore. But she remembered the plot, because it had been bad enough to lodge itself in her head like a bug nobody ever bothered to fix: a scheming green-tea second female lead named Julie Lin, quietly jealous of the female lead, Vanessa Sterling, who pulled every dirty trick imaginable to sabotage her — and ultimately got exposed in front of the entire upper crust of society, ending in disgrace and a death nobody mourned.
"Okay," Julie said to the empty room, her voice far calmer than she expected of herself. "Root cause: isekai'd into a B-grade romance novel. Severity: critical. Need a whole new test suite to verify this insane hypothesis."
She got up, bare feet on cold marble, and walked to the tall mirror in the corner. The reflection was a total stranger — pretty in that specific way a character gets designed to be hated, dark brown hair loose down her back, eyes still holding the dazed look of someone who'd just woken from a very long, formless dream.
Just as she was trying to recall exactly how the original plot went, a soft chime rang out inside her head — clean, cold, unmistakably like a system update notification.
[The Plot System has connected with its host.]
Julie froze in the middle of the room, one hand still gripping the edge of the vanity. "Great," she muttered, keeping her voice as flat as she could manage, like she was reading an error log off a terminal. "At least I'm not the only thing in this universe running on bugged code."
[Greetings, host Julie Lin. I am the Plot System, established to ensure the original plot of the novel "Moonlight Behind Steel Curtains" proceeds on schedule. You are currently occupying the role of the Villainous Second Female Lead. Your duty is to complete assigned plot beats exactly as written.]
"And if I refuse?" Julie asked, testing the disembodied voice the way she used to test a form field by feeding it a negative number when it only accepted positive integers, just to see whether the app would crash or fail gracefully.
[Not recommended.]
A jolt of electricity ran straight down her spine the instant the words finished, not overwhelming, but enough to curl her whole body inward, both hands clamping onto the vanity's edge until her knuckles went white. She gritted her teeth through the aftershock, then exhaled, forcing her voice back into the calm register of someone filing a critical bug against a task-tracking system.
"Got it. Noted. Don't need a second trial to confirm that behavior. Now tell me what the first task is, so I at least know what I'm dealing with."
[Task 1: Tonight, at the engagement party of Vanessa Sterling and Austin Cross, slip a powder that destroys the voice into Vanessa Sterling's glass of red wine. Complete before 10:00 PM. Failure or refusal will result in a life-point deduction and an escalated physical penalty.]
Julie looked down at her palm, where the aftershock of the jolt still tingled like a thousand tiny needles.
"Wonderful," she said, almost laughing at the absurdity of it. "Day one in a new world, and my very first task is poisoning someone at their own engagement party. Textbook onboarding for a rookie villainess."
She sank into the velvet-upholstered chair beside the vanity, forcing her mind to stay sharp. If this really was the novel she'd skimmed, then she was holding a massive advantage: she already knew the broad strokes, already knew Vanessa Sterling would come out on top no matter what, and already knew that the "scheming villainess" — her, now — would die in disgrace if she blindly followed the task text word for word.
The original plot, as much as she could recall through the fog of half-remembered late-night scrolling, ran a fairly predictable course: an ambitious second lead making Vanessa's life miserable through a string of increasingly petty schemes, until the female lead finally exposed her in a scene practically calibrated for public humiliation. If that was still the shape of things, then every task the System handed her from here on was just another beat leading toward that exact ending — unless she found a way to walk the letter of each task without ever touching its spirit.
She tried refusing one more time, just to confirm the shock hadn't been a fluke. "I refuse this task."
The second jolt was far worse, forcing her to grip the table so hard her jaw ached from clenching, a cold sweat breaking out along the back of her neck.
[Level-one penalty activated. Repeating refusal behavior is not recommended.]
When the pain finally faded, Julie slumped back into the chair, breathing hard — but her mind, the same mind that had once spent an entire week proving that a birthdate field on a signup form would happily accept "0000-00-00" as long as it matched the regex pattern, had already started running in a completely different direction from the fear still churning in her chest.
If the System only punished "refusing a task" or "deviating from the task text," then the real question wasn't whether to do it or not. The real question was: what, exactly, did the task text say, word for word?
[Task 1: slip a powder that destroys the voice into Vanessa Sterling's glass of red wine.]
Nowhere did it say the glass actually had to reach Vanessa Sterling's mouth. Nowhere did it define "powder that destroys the voice" as something that had to be genuinely harmful. Julie had once spent a full week proving that an "email address" field on her old company's system would accept a nonsense string like "asjdklasjd" as long as an "@" symbol showed up somewhere in it — she knew exactly what it felt like when a machine only pattern-matched text without understanding a shred of the meaning behind it.
The original host's memories surfaced, offering up an image of Vanessa Sterling: a woman who stood as straight and sharp as a honed blade in every press photo, whose gaze alone could silence a tense boardroom with a single glance. A woman who, according to the original plot, would slowly uncover every one of "Julie Lin's" dirty tricks and retaliate without mercy, driving the villainess to a dead-end road of ruin.
"Okay," Julie told herself, standing up and brushing imaginary dust off the unfamiliar evening gown she was wearing. "Can't refuse the task. But I can absolutely redefine what 'success' means in a way where nobody actually dies."
The first thing Julie did was ransack the marble bathroom's medicine cabinet — and found exactly what she needed: a box of strawberry-flavored liver-support effervescent tablets, the kind advertised constantly on TV, the single most harmless thing a socialite with too much time on her hands might plausibly keep in her room.
She crushed one with the emerald ring, grinding it into a fine, pale pink powder, and wrapped it carefully in a gold-trimmed napkin — enough to pass as a "mysterious poison packet" to anyone glancing at it in dim light, but really nothing more than vitamin C, a bit of antioxidant filler, and artificial strawberry flavoring.
The next part was harder: how to make the wine "poisoned" in the strict letter of the task, while making absolutely sure nobody actually drank it.
Julie sat in front of the mirror, practicing the fake panic she remembered the original host using to win sympathy — trembling lips, eyes brimming with tears about to spill. She tried a few lines, voice deliberately catching mid-sentence.
"Miss Vanessa, I'm so sorry—" Too stiff, like a middle schooler reciting memorized lines. She tried again, softer, adding a small hiccup at the end. "I... I only wanted to toast to your happiness..."
Better. The plan finished forming in her head down to the last detail: carry the "treated" wine glass with both hands, approach Vanessa with a mask of respectful deference, and the instant she was close enough — trip. A carefully calculated stumble, precise down to the centimeter, natural enough that none of the glittering guests would suspect a thing, but accurate enough to send the red wine splashing onto whoever happened to be standing nearby instead of anywhere near the actual target's mouth.
The ideal candidate, according to the original host's memory, was Austin Cross — Vanessa's fiancé, a man who always angled himself slightly off to one side in every important photograph, because he refused to let himself fall outside the camera's frame for even a second.
Julie looked at herself in the mirror one last time before stepping out of the room, drawing in a slow, steadying breath.
"QA tester Julie Lin," she murmured to herself, quiet but resolute, "tonight's real task isn't hurting anyone. The task is finding the exact edge case that convinces both the System and the entire plot that you completed the assignment, while the truth is that nobody gets hurt at all."
The Sterling family's ballroom glittered like an enormous, flawlessly cut piece of crystal. Soft string music wove through waves of laughter and conversation from the city's elite, the scent of red wine and white lilies mixing into the crisp, cool air pumped in by the central air conditioning. Massive chandeliers overhead threw warm golden light down onto the polished black marble floor, mirror-smooth beneath everyone's feet.
Somewhere to her left, two women in matching pastel gowns were murmuring behind their champagne flutes about the groom-to-be — something about a "generous allowance" from the Sterling family accounts, and how convenient it was that Austin never seemed to mind being outshined by his fiancée as long as the money kept flowing. Julie filed the detail away out of habit, the same reflex that once made her double-check every suspicious edge case in a bug report before closing the ticket.
Julie pressed herself into a corner, the "treated" wine glass gripped so tightly in her hand that her knuckles had gone bloodless, feeling like she was cradling a time bomb labeled strawberry syrup.
Then she saw Vanessa Sterling.
Not through some flat press photo, not through the hazy fragments of the original host's memory — but real, alive, standing amid a cluster of people offering their congratulations, dressed in a black gown without a single unnecessary detail, her hair swept back to reveal the proud, straight line of her neck. Vanessa wasn't smiling, her face maintaining its usual composed distance, but there was something in the way she stood — upright, deliberate, as though she controlled the entire room with nothing more than a passing glance — that made Julie forget, for one full second, that she needed to breathe.
The original host's memory labeled that feeling "terrifying." But the word rising unbidden in Julie's own mind right now wasn't that at all, and she didn't have time to debug exactly what word it actually was.
A butler in a black uniform gave her a subtle signal from across the room. It was time.
Julie's heart was racing faster than she wanted to admit to herself — partly from fear of being caught, partly for some other reason she hadn't had time to properly analyze yet. She walked forward, slow, even steps, keeping the glass balanced, eyes locked on Austin Cross standing exactly thirty centimeters to Vanessa's right — the perfect distance for a premeditated stumble.
Ten steps left. Then five. Then three.
Julie drew one last deep breath, and in her head, her own private countdown hit zero.
The stumble unfolded as flawlessly as a scene rehearsed by a professional director: her heel skidded just slightly on the polished marble, her body pitching forward at exactly the calculated angle, and the glass of red wine flew along precisely the trajectory Julie had planned — splashing straight across the white dress shirt of Austin Cross's tuxedo, leaving a deep red stain blooming outward like a flower blossoming in entirely the wrong place at an otherwise elegant party.
"Ow!" Austin yelped, stumbling backward, his face draining of color at the sight of his custom-tailored suit ruined in front of the entire social elite.
Julie dropped to her knees exactly as rehearsed, both hands covering her face, her voice breaking with just the right amount of trembling she'd practiced all afternoon in front of the mirror.
"Miss Vanessa, I'm so sorry... I only wanted to toast to your happiness..." Tears — real this time, because she was genuinely shaking with fear — rolled down her cheeks. "I'm so clumsy, I didn't mean to..."
The entire ballroom fell silent for a few brief seconds, then the murmuring began to spread like ripples across a pond. Someone rushed to hand Austin a towel. Someone else whispered from behind a silk fan, "That girl again, every single time." Julie kept her head bowed low, not entirely for the performance, but also because she couldn't summon the nerve to look up — couldn't bring herself to face the woman standing less than a meter away, the woman who was supposed to have lost her voice tonight to a packet of "poison" now sitting soggy inside Austin Cross's ruined jacket.
[System log: Task 1 — complete. Note: the behavior "spilling poison-laced wine onto the designated target" fully matched the keywords "poison the voice" plus "Vanessa Sterling" plus "wine glass." No life-point deduction applied.]
Julie exhaled a long breath, so relieved she nearly laughed in the middle of her own fake crying scene.
Amid the chaos of servants scrambling for clean towels and Austin growling something about "that useless, idiotic girl," only one person in the entire room said nothing at all.
Vanessa Sterling looked down at Julie — still kneeling on the cold marble, hands trembling, pupils darting wildly like a small animal cornered against a wall with no escape — and then slowly shifted her gaze to the pale pink foam still clinging to the fabric of Austin's jacket, the exact kind of foam and exact shade of soft pink that no "voice-destroying poison" on earth had ever been known to produce.
Nobody else in the entire ballroom noticed that particular detail. But Vanessa Sterling, a woman capable of reading a lie off the subtle dilation of someone's pupils from twenty meters away, absolutely did.
She held her gaze on Julie for one second, then two, far longer than any ordinary apology for ruining a party warranted. Julie, still staring down at the floor, felt the full weight of that look pressing down on her like an entirely different kind of electric shock — not painful like the System's punishment, but enough to make every cell in her body snap to full alert.
Finally, Vanessa let one corner of her mouth curve upward — the faintest trace of a smile, barely enough to even qualify as one — and spoke, her voice as cold as ever but no longer quite as indifferent as before.
"Interesting."
Then she turned and walked away, ordering the staff to see to Austin, leaving Julie kneeling alone on the marble floor, her heart pounding for a reason no System, no task text, could possibly help her explain.
A junior assistant hurried over with a fresh napkin for Austin, throwing Julie a look that was somewhere between pity and disdain, the same look the servants in the original novel probably gave the villainess in every early chapter. Julie let them see whatever they wanted to see. Being underestimated, she was starting to suspect, might turn out to be the single most useful debugging tool she had in this entire world.
In the car ride home, Julie curled into the corner of the leather seat, watching city lights slide past the fogged window, her mind racing through a stack of questions that had no satisfying answers yet.
"Interesting." That was exactly what Vanessa had said. Not "clumsy," not "pitiful," and certainly not any of the words Julie had braced herself to hear in the worst-case scenario. "Interesting" was the word people used when they discovered that something wasn't quite what it appeared to be on the surface — no different from a bug hiding beneath a UI that looked perfectly polished at first glance.
Had Vanessa really seen that strange pink foam? Had she noticed the way Julie's hands were shaking in a way that didn't match someone who'd just successfully pulled off a ruthless poisoning plot?
[Task 2 is being drafted. Please stand by.]
The System's cold, emotionless notification voice cut through Julie's spiraling thoughts. She closed her eyes, leaning her head against the cool glass of the car window, feeling both relieved that she'd survived the first task without anyone actually getting hurt, and a strange, creeping unease settling deep in her chest — because she had a vague but certain feeling that tonight had only been the opening move in a much longer game between her and the woman she was, according to every page of the original plot, supposed to destroy with her own hands.
And for the first time since waking up in this unfamiliar body, Julie Lin genuinely wasn't sure which thing frightened her more tonight — being caught cheating by the System, or being seen through, far too much and far too fast, by Vanessa Sterling.
