August of 2026.
The organization's new structure had been operational for six weeks.
Li Ming Cheng as director. Chu Jun as head of technical research. Lin Jing Huo as head of documentation and institutional relations. He as academic director — the role that held the methodology's coherence and provided the long view that only a person who had been at the center of the work since its beginning could provide.
The structure was working. He knew this not from what people reported to him but from what he observed: the quality of the decisions being made without his direct involvement, the confidence with which Li Ming Cheng and Chu Jun were navigating situations that would have required his active guidance two years earlier, the way the network was responding to the new point of contact with the same quality of engagement it had always shown.
The building phase was over.
The vessel was in its climate-controlled storage, documentation ongoing, the first scholarly visitors receiving access in the context of formal research applications. The national collection had, in the weeks since the transfer, sent two researchers to examine the piece and had begun the process of creating the public record that would eventually make the identification accessible to anyone who wanted to know whose hands had shaped it.
Zhang Yi Bi would have a name in the formal record.
After six hundred years, a working name — One-Brush Zhang — would be in the national heritage documentation alongside a corpus of nine identified works and a methodology for finding more.
He thought about this on a Thursday morning in August while sitting in his reduced office — smaller now, the large office given to Li Ming Cheng — and looking at the photographs on the wall.
The photographs that had accumulated over sixteen years: the celadon bowl, the Wang piece, the ink stone from Liu Tian Bao's collection, the small plum-blossom vase from Chen Jian Ming, the larger vase from Li Guo Hong, the Macao piece with its incomplete character, the two pieces from Master Chen's restoration records, and now the Yongle vessel — nine images of nine objects whose maker had been nameless for five to seven centuries and was nameless no longer.
He looked at the photographs and thought about something that had been in the background of his attention since the tender result.
The pieces he had made in Chang'an.
Not thinking about them in the way he had thought about them in the first years here — with the urgency of someone who had lost something and needed to account for it. Thinking about them with the equanimity of someone who had arrived at a sufficient understanding of what had been lost and what had remained.
The vase that had fallen with him into the well. Gone, almost certainly — the fall and the impact would have destroyed it, or it had been lost in the centuries of the well's subsequent history. He had stopped asking about it, internally, in the third year. The question had joined the category of things that were true and could not be known, which was a large category and a category he had made his peace with.
The other pieces. The seventeen that had been waiting on the shelves in the workshop when he fell. The pieces completed over twenty-two years that had moved through the court and the diplomatic system and the institutional collections of the Tang Dynasty and whatever had followed them across the centuries.
Some had not survived. Most had not survived — the survival rate of objects across twelve centuries was low, and the survival of objects without provenance documentation connecting them to a specific maker was lower.
But some had survived. Statistically, in a corpus of significant production over twenty-two years, some had survived. And those that had survived were somewhere — in collections, in museums, in storage, in private hands — carrying in their bases the small curve and the terminal drag to the left that he had placed in everything he made.
Waiting for someone with the right question.
He had been that person for Zhang Yi Bi.
Who would be that person for the mark under the base of his own surviving pieces?
He sat with this question without urgency. The urgency that had accompanied similar questions in the first years here was gone. What remained was the steady interest of someone who understood that the question would resolve itself in its own time, if it resolved at all — and that the resolution was not required for the work that was already present and real to be sufficient.
The daughters came to the office that afternoon — a school holiday, Lin Jing Huo had brought them in, they were ten years old and were developing the specific ability to move through an adult space without requiring the space to accommodate them.
The elder went immediately to the wall of photographs.
He watched her.
She stood in front of the photographs for several minutes, moving along the wall from left to right, spending varying amounts of time with each image. More time with the celadon bowl than with most. More time with the Yongle vessel than with anything else.
The younger came to stand beside him.
'She is doing the thing you do,' the younger said.
'What thing?'
'The looking thing. Where you look for a long time without saying anything.'
'Yes,' he said. 'She is.'
'Does she see what you see?'
He considered this honestly.
'She sees some of what I see. She will see more as she gets older and has more to compare things to.' He looked at his elder daughter. 'The capacity is there. The experience will come.'
'And me?' the younger asked.
He looked at her.
'You see different things,' he said. 'You read the people inside situations the way she reads the objects within them. Both are forms of the same underlying attention.'
She thought about this.
'That is two ways of looking,' she said.
'Yes.'
'And the work needs both?'
'The work needs both. And more — there are other ways of looking that neither of you has and that other people have, and the work is better for including all of them.'
She accepted this with the nod of someone whose social intelligence had just processed a real insight about how something she had been thinking about worked.
The elder turned from the wall.
'The Yongle vessel,' she said. 'The mark in the lower right corner of the base. You found it the same way you found the mark in the celadon bowl.'
'Yes.'
'But six hundred years apart.'
'The same craftsman's habit, six hundred years apart. Yes.'
She looked at him.
'Were there other craftsmen who left marks that you have not found yet?'
'Yes. Many, probably.'
'Are you going to look for them?'
'The organization will continue looking. Li Ming Cheng and Chu Jun will lead that work.'
'But you.'
He looked at her.
'I will look at what comes to me,' he said. 'And I will tell you what I see, when you are ready to understand it.'
She held his gaze with the directness she had always had.
'I am starting to be ready now,' she said.
He looked at his elder daughter — ten years old, with the quality of attention he had identified at eight months and that had deepened every year since — and felt something that was not pride exactly, more like the specific satisfaction of seeing something become what it had always had the potential to become.
'Yes,' he said. 'You are starting to be ready. And I will be here to teach you.'
Lin Jing Huo appeared at the office door — she had been in the meeting room with Li Ming Cheng, reviewing the documentation protocols.
She looked at the scene: him, the daughters, the wall of photographs, the particular quality of the conversation that had just concluded.
She said nothing, but the expression on her face was one he had not seen before — something that was beyond the familiar expressions he had catalogued over sixteen years. Something that was looking at the full picture of what had accumulated.
He looked at her with the looking-as-encountering.
What he saw was someone arriving at something she had not expected to arrive at — a form of completeness that she had not anticipated when she had stayed, in the hospital room sixteen years ago, because the clan needed her and she believed in what the clan could be.
The clan had become what she had believed it could be.
The person across from her had become — not who she had expected, not who she had thought she was staying for, but someone real and present and entirely here.
And the daughters between them, and the sons at home with Huang Gui Ying, and the vessel in storage, and the work continuing in the hands that had been prepared to carry it.
This was the full picture.
'Are you ready to go?' she said. Not about the office — about the day.
'Yes,' he said.
He gathered his things.
The daughters followed him out.
Lin Jing Huo turned off the office lights.
Behind them, on the wall in the darkened office, the nine photographs remained — nine objects whose maker had been nameless and was nameless no longer, waiting in the dark for the next person who would come and look and ask the right question.
The work continued.
Always, the work continued.
