She returned from lunch at twelve fifty-eight.
This was two minutes before the informal end of the lunch hour, which she had determined by watching when people started drifting back to their desks rather than by being told. No one had told her anything specific about the rhythm of the office — the onboarding documents covered policies and procedures and the organizational structure, but they did not cover the things that actually governed a workplace: who took long lunches and who didn't, which meetings ran over and which ended early, when it was acceptable to speak and when the quality of the silence meant you shouldn't.
She had spent the morning learning the documents. She spent the return from lunch learning the room.
The marketing team occupied a open-plan floor with glass partitions separating the senior staff's individual offices from the general workspace. Seven desks in the main area, arranged in a configuration that was officially about collaboration and actually about sight lines — you could see most of the room from most of the desks, which meant you could also be seen. So-yi had noted this in the morning and adjusted accordingly: she worked with the posture of someone who was focused, because focused was what the room rewarded.
Now, returning, she looked at the room differently.
The morning had given her the names and the titles. The lunch hour — the hour itself, not the bread, though the bread had been good — had given her time to sort what she had observed into something more useful. She could see it now, more clearly: who moved through the space as if they had built it, and who moved through it as if they were still asking permission. Who spoke in the team's group chat and who read without responding. Whose desk had things on it beyond the functional minimum — a plant, a photograph, a mug with a slogan — and whose was bare in the way of someone who had not yet decided whether they were staying.
She sat down at her desk and opened her laptop.
At two o'clock exactly, Park Jisoo appeared at the door of her office and looked across the floor at So-yi with the look of someone confirming a thing rather than checking it. So-yi was already standing.
The office was small and ordered — the desk clear except for a laptop and a notepad, the walls without decoration, the single plant on the windowsill so healthy it was clearly the beneficiary of deliberate attention. Park Jisoo was thirty-six, So-yi guessed, though she carried the authority of someone who had stopped thinking about her age some years ago and replaced it with something more useful. She had short hair and wore it without apparent effort, and she sat across the desk from So-yi with the posture of someone who had conducted enough of these meetings to have stopped performing them.
"First day," she said. Not a question.
"Yes."
"How's the onboarding material?"
"Thorough," So-yi said. "Some of it's more current than the rest."
Park Jisoo looked at her. A brief recalibration — the look of someone who had expected a more neutral answer and was adjusting to a more specific one. "Which parts?"
"The competitor landscape section. The market share data is from eighteen months ago."
"It is," Park Jisoo said. "Which is why your first task is to update it." She slid a printed brief across the desk — a single page, formatted cleanly. "Three competitors. Current positioning, recent campaigns, any strategic shifts in the last two quarters. Summary document, not exhaustive. Two days."
So-yi read the brief. It was specific without being prescriptive — the kind of task that was a test not of what you knew but of how you thought, what you chose to include, what you understood to be relevant.
"Two days," she said.
"If you have questions, I'm usually available between nine and ten in the morning. Otherwise, message me."
So-yi nodded. She folded the brief and stood.
At the door, Park Jisoo said: "You asked a good question this morning. About the onboarding material."
So-yi looked back.
"I mean the one you didn't ask out loud," Park Jisoo said. "The one that was visible on your face while you were reading."
So-yi did not say anything.
"That's fine," Park Jisoo said, and looked back at her laptop. "Ask it when you're ready."
So-yi went back to her desk.
The woman who sat to her left had not been there in the morning — she had arrived sometime during lunch, settled in with the efficiency of someone returning to a familiar space, and was now deeply involved in something on her screen that required periodic typing of the rapid, decisive kind. She was perhaps twenty-five, with her hair in a high ponytail and a sticker on the back of her laptop that read, in small letters, THIS MEETING COULD HAVE BEEN AN EMAIL.
She looked up when So-yi sat down.
"You're the new one," she said.
"Jung So-yi."
"Han Mirae." She said it quickly, in the way of someone who gives their name as a formality and considers the formality complete. "Intern?"
"Intern."
"Me too. Second month." She looked back at her screen, then back at So-yi. "Jisoo gave you the competitor brief?"
"Yes."
"She gives everyone the competitor brief first. It's how she figures out whether you're a researcher or a presenter." Mirae said this with the authority of someone who had worked out the system and was pleased to explain it. "Researchers go deep and miss the point. Presenters stay surface and miss the detail. She wants both."
"What did she think of yours?"
Mirae blinked. Then she smiled — quickly, as if the smile had surprised her. "She said it was competent."
"That sounds like a compliment from her."
"It was," Mirae said. "I looked up her performance reviews from previous interns online. 'Competent' is above average."
So-yi looked at her. "You researched your supervisor's grading patterns before you started?"
"I researched everything before I started," Mirae said, with the simple confidence of someone who considered this normal. "Including the building across the street." She tilted her head toward the window. "Do you know who's in there?"
So-yi looked at the window. Through it, at this angle, she could see the upper floors of the building opposite — the black glass, the sharp lines, the particular quality it had of absorbing the afternoon light rather than reflecting it.
"No," she said.
Mirae reached for her phone. "Kang Corporation. One of the top five conglomerates in the country — logistics, real estate, some tech acquisitions in the last two years. The chairman is Kang Sung-jin, but he's been stepping back." She pulled up something and angled the screen toward So-yi. "The one actually running things is his son. Kang Ha-jun. Thirty-four. He's been managing director for four years and the results have been — well. Look."
So-yi looked at the screen.
It was a photograph from a financial magazine — the kind of photograph these publications took of people they considered significant, formal and carefully lit. The man in it was standing in what appeared to be an office, turned slightly toward the camera in the way of someone who had agreed to be photographed but had not agreed to perform ease about it. Dark suit. The face composed into the expression of someone who revealed nothing because revealing nothing was a decision they had made.
She knew the face.
Not from the photograph — she had not seen this photograph before. She knew it from a small bakery on a side street, where a man had picked up her wallet and told her the cheese and green onion was good and answered her questions with the precise minimum of words required and looked at her with the specific look of someone recalibrating in real time.
She looked at the photograph for one second longer than she needed to.
Then she handed the phone back.
"Interesting," she said.
Mirae took the phone and continued — about the family, about the rumored engagement to someone from another conglomerate family, about the general atmosphere of the building across the street which was, according to people Mirae had talked to who had attended meetings there, extremely quiet in the way of places where quietness was enforced rather than natural. So-yi listened. She made the appropriate sounds of someone listening. She was, in fact, listening — but to a different thing than what Mirae was saying.
She was listening to the particular quality of her own reaction, which was not what she would have predicted.
She had expected — if she had thought about it, which she hadn't — that finding out who he was would produce something clarifying. A recontextualization of the brief strange minutes in the bakery, a way to file it correctly. She had talked to a very powerful man without knowing he was powerful, and that was mildly interesting as an anecdote, and now she knew, and that should be the end of the interesting part.
Instead what she felt was something more complicated and less comfortable.
She felt, specifically, as if she owed the interaction a second look that she was not sure she wanted to give it.
At five-thirty, the floor began its end-of-day dispersal. So-yi saved her work, closed her laptop, and stood. She was pulling on her jacket when she found herself at the window — not deliberately, just the natural movement of a person crossing a room, but she stopped there rather than continuing to the door.
The building across the street was lit differently now, the afternoon gone and the artificial lights of the interior visible through the black glass in the way they had not been during the day — warm and indirect, suggesting people still at their desks, still working, the day not yet over on that side of the street.
She looked at it for a moment.
She thought about the man in the photograph standing in his office. She thought about the same man standing in a small bakery with a paper-wrapped bread in his hand, looking at her with the expression of someone who was experiencing something they did not have an existing category for. She thought about what Mirae had said — extremely quiet in the way of places where quietness is enforced rather than natural.
She wondered if he had known, in the bakery, that she didn't know who he was.
And then she wondered why she was wondering.
She picked up her bag and went to the elevator.
Her mother picked up on the second ring.
"How was it?"
"Good," So-yi said. She was in the lobby now, moving toward the exit, the tail end of the day's departures around her. "I got my first task. Competitor research. Two days."
"Do you know how to do it?"
"Yes."
"Then you'll be fine."
"That's what I thought."
Her mother asked about the team, and So-yi told her about Mirae — the research on her supervisor's grading patterns, the sticker on the laptop, the general impression of someone who was extremely prepared and somehow still surprising. Her mother laughed. So-yi told her about Park Jisoo and the question she hadn't asked out loud, and her mother said that sounded like a person worth working for.
She did not mention the photograph.
She noticed, in the moment of not mentioning it, that she was not mentioning it — noticed the small deliberate shape of the omission. She was not sure why. It was not a secret. It was an unremarkable coincidence, the kind that happened in cities where certain streets intersected certain industries and the same faces appeared in multiple contexts without meaning anything specific.
She just didn't want to explain it. Not yet. Not until she understood what, if anything, there was to explain.
She said goodbye to her mother at the bus stop and put her phone away and waited for the bus in the cold, watching her breath in the air.
The bus came. She got on.
At home, she changed into comfortable clothes, made rice, ate it at the desk. She opened her laptop and created a new document and began the competitor research — organized, methodical, starting with the publicly available materials and making a list of what she would need to look deeper to find.
The brief listed three competitors.
The first was a mid-sized marketing consultancy she had heard of during her degree. The second was a newer digital-first agency that had made noise in the last eighteen months. The third was listed as a strategic category competitor rather than a direct one — a corporation whose internal marketing capabilities had expanded significantly and now represented an alternative to the firms her company served.
Kang Corporation.
She read the name on the brief. Then she looked at it for a moment — just a moment, the length of a breath held and released.
Then she opened a new tab and began to type.
