Saturday was the day she gave herself.
This was not a formal arrangement — she had not decided, at any specific point, that Saturday would be the day she gave herself. It had simply become that, in the way that things became what they became when you were paying attention to your own life: gradually, without announcement, until one day you noticed the pattern and understood that you had been making the same quiet choice repeatedly and that the repetition had produced something reliable.
Saturday was the day she did not have to be useful to anyone else.
This was not selfishness — she had thought about this, in the careful way she thought about things she wanted to be honest with herself about. She was useful to people on the other days. She helped Mrs. Oh with the cart. She listened to Lee Hyunwoo talk about his daughter's graphic design. She answered Mirae's questions and Park Jisoo's follow-ups and the emails from her mother that were nominally about persimmons and were actually about connection. She did all of this willingly, without resentment, because it was genuinely who she was.
But Saturday was the day she was useful only to herself.
This Saturday she was working on the essay.
It had started as a thesis section that she had liked too much to leave in the thesis — a section her advisor had said was interesting but outside the scope of the project, which was probably true, it was outside the scope of the project. She had extracted it and kept it in a folder on her laptop labeled, straightforwardly, things I haven't finished. She opened the folder on Saturday mornings sometimes and looked at what was in it and occasionally worked on something.
Today it was the essay.
Brand authenticity — the gap between what a brand said and what it was, and the question of whether that gap was always a failure or whether sometimes it was a deliberate choice, and whether deliberate choices to perform rather than be were ever justified and by what standard. She had strong views on this, which was why she had written the section and why her advisor had said it was interesting, and she had been trying, for six weeks, to turn the strong views into something that read like an argument rather than a conviction.
She was on the third paragraph of the fourth attempt when her phone rang.
She looked at it. An unknown number — but a Seoul number, which narrowed it. She picked up.
"Jung So-yi."
"It's Kang Ha-jun."
She registered this. She registered it in the specific way of something that was surprising and also, in some part of her that had been quietly preparing for various things, not entirely surprising. She set her pen down on the desk.
"Mr. Kang," she said. "How did you get this number?"
"Your work profile lists a direct line." A pause. "I'm calling about the methodology brief. The autumn series analysis — you cited a secondary source for the regional market data that I haven't been able to locate in the documentation you shared."
She found the relevant section in the document still open on her laptop. She gave him the source — the specific citation, the access point, the page range. He would have been able to email her this question and received the same information in the same format. She knew this. He knew this. Neither of them mentioned it.
After she gave him the citation, there was a pause.
Not a long pause. Perhaps four seconds. The specific quality of a pause that existed not because neither person had anything to say but because neither person was rushing to fill the space with the first available thing.
He said: "What are you doing today?"
She looked at the essay on her screen. "Writing something," she said. "Not for work."
"What is it?"
She thought about the essay. She thought about the four attempts and the third paragraph and the thing she was trying to say that she had not yet found the right way to say. "An essay," she said. "About authenticity. Specifically about the gap between what a brand says and what it actually is, and whether that gap is always a problem."
"Is it?"
She had been asked this question before, by her thesis advisor, by classmates, in the feedback on the earlier versions of the argument. She had a standard answer — nuanced, qualified, accounting for the complexity. She said: "I think the gap is a problem when it becomes the point. When the performance of a thing replaces the thing itself and the brand starts optimizing for the performance rather than the substance. But a gap isn't automatically a failure. Sometimes it's just — translation. The thing you are, expressed in a language other people can receive."
"And the difference between translation and performance."
"Is whether the original is still there," she said. "Whether there's something real underneath the version you're presenting."
A pause. "Yes," he said.
She looked at the third paragraph, which had been giving her trouble since Tuesday. "The part I'm stuck on," she said, and was aware as she said it that she had not planned to tell him this, that it had simply arrived in the conversation the way things arrived when you were not managing what you said, "is how you know when you've drifted. When the translation has become the original. When you've been performing something for so long that you've forgotten you were performing it."
He was quiet for a moment.
"What made you think of that," he said, "for a brand essay."
It was not really a question — the intonation was the intonation of someone who already had a hypothesis about the answer and was giving her the opportunity to confirm or complicate it. She had noticed this about him: he asked questions he already had partial answers to, not to trap you but because he was genuinely interested in the gap between his partial answer and yours.
She said: "I'm afraid of it. Specifically for myself. That I'll go into an environment where the successful version of me is not the real version, and I'll make the adjustments, and I'll be good at making them, and one day I'll realize I don't know which one is the original anymore."
She had not said this before.
Not to her mother, who would have worried. Not to Mirae, who would have offered frameworks. Not to her friend in the hospital bed, who knew her well enough that saying it would have made it more real than So-yi was ready for it to be. She had not said it because saying it required finding the right conditions — the right person, the right moment, the specific quality of a conversation in which the thing could be said without becoming a performance of the saying.
This was those conditions.
She was not entirely sure how that had happened.
He was quiet. Not the quiet of someone deciding how to respond — the quiet of someone actually sitting with what they had just heard. She had spent enough time in conversations with people who performed sitting-with-it to know the difference, and this was not the performance.
"I don't think you'll fail to notice," he said. "The person who asks that question before it happens is not usually the person who doesn't notice when it does."
He said it in the tone he said things that were factual — without warmth added to make it easier to receive, without the softening that would have made it into reassurance rather than observation. It landed the way true things landed when they were not dressed up as anything other than true.
She did not say anything for a moment.
She looked at the third paragraph.
"That's a useful thing to say," she said finally.
"It's what I think."
"I know." She paused. "That's why it's useful."
They talked for a while after that — not about the essay, not about anything in particular, the conversation moving the way conversations moved when neither person was steering it toward a conclusion. He mentioned something about the strategy review — a problem in one of the internal assessments that had required three rounds of revision before anyone was satisfied. She said that sounded exhausting. He said it was, in the way of something that was true and that he was unexpectedly willing to admit was true.
At some point the conversation found its natural end — not because either of them wanted it to end, but because conversations had natural ends and this one reached its. She said she should get back to the essay. He said he would let her go. Neither of these statements was the complete truth, but they were the socially legible version of it, and both of them understood the gap.
She said: "The citation is on page forty-seven of the secondary source, by the way. In case you need it again."
"Thank you," he said.
She ended the call.
She sat in her room with the phone in her hand for a moment after.
The room was the room it always was — the low ceiling, the east-facing window, the desk with the laptop and the essay and the pen she had set down when the phone rang. Everything was the same. She was also, she noticed, different from how she had been when the phone rang, and the difference was not large and was not nothing.
She had told him something she had not told anyone.
She turned this over carefully, the way she turned over things that required careful turning. Not because she regretted it — she did not regret it, which was itself information. But because she wanted to understand it. She had told him something she had not told the people who were closest to her, people who knew her in ways he did not and could not, not yet, perhaps not ever. And she had told him not because he had asked particularly well or because the moment had been particularly suited to it.
She had told him because with him, telling the truth did not feel like a risk.
She thought about this.
She did not have a clean explanation for it. She had clean explanations for most things — she was a person who found explanations satisfying, who liked to understand the mechanics of things so she could engage with them properly. This she could not explain cleanly. Only that it was true: there was something in the specific quality of his attention that made the truth feel safe in a way it did not always feel safe, even with people she trusted more in the conventional sense.
Maybe, she thought, it was because he did not need her to be anything.
The people who loved her — her mother, her friend, Mrs. Yoon in her quiet way — needed her to be okay. This was the nature of love, or one of its natures: it invested in your okayness, which meant that sometimes your not-okayness, your fears and your failures and the things you were ashamed of, landed differently than you wanted, cushioned by the love into something smaller or larger than it was. She understood this. She was not complaining about it.
He did not love her. He did not need her to be anything in particular. When she said she was afraid of losing herself, he had received it as information rather than as something to be fixed or soothed. He had looked at it with her, briefly, and said what he thought, and that was the end of it.
She picked up her pen.
She looked at the third paragraph.
She read the last sentence she had written: The question of authenticity in brand communication is therefore not whether a gap exists between identity and expression, but whether the identity remains legible beneath the expression — whether, under sufficient pressure, the original can still be found.
She crossed out the last clause.
She wrote: whether the person doing the expressing still knows where the original is.
She read it back.
It was better. It was more honest, more specific, less constructed around the idea of what an argument should sound like and more around what she actually meant. She could not have said with certainty why this draft was better than the previous three. She only knew that it was, and that the conversation had happened between the previous draft and this one, and that these two facts were not unrelated.
She wrote until the afternoon light changed.
Then she saved the file, closed the laptop, and went to make tea.
She was thinking about nothing specific — or thinking about everything specific in the diffuse way that happened after a long period of focused work, when the mind released its grip on the task and floated briefly in the space between the finished thing and the next one.
She poured the tea.
She stood at the small kitchen window and drank it and looked at the afternoon version of the neighborhood — the particular light, the particular sounds, the particular quality of a Saturday afternoon in a place you had chosen to live.
Something had shifted in the day.
She was not sure it was a small thing.
She finished her tea.
She was not going to resolve what it was today — she was learning, slowly, that some things did not require immediate resolution, that some things needed to be lived in for a while before they became legible. She had spent a long time as a person who resolved things promptly, and she was becoming, in certain specific situations, a person who could also wait.
She rinsed her cup.
She went back to the room.
The essay was saved. The afternoon was still there. The window still faced east and the light had moved past the angle where it hit the corner of the wall and was now the flat, even light of mid-afternoon, which was its own kind of light, useful in its own way.
She opened the laptop.
She began the fourth paragraph.
