Monday passed without incident.
This was what she told herself at the end of it — without incident — and it was technically true. She had worked. She had done the work well. She had spoken to the people she needed to speak to and answered the emails that required answers and contributed to the afternoon's discussion with the kind of focused engagement that Park Jisoo had come to expect from her and that So-yi had come to take a certain quiet satisfaction in delivering. Nothing had happened, on the visible surface of the day, that would have distinguished it from any other Monday in the six weeks she had been here.
Beneath the visible surface, she was processing.
This was how she operated when there was something real to deal with — not the way some people operated, loudly and externally, the processing visible to everyone around them as shifting moods and shortened attention spans. She processed quietly and internally, the way a system ran a background check while the foreground displayed something else entirely. She had always done this. It was useful and it cost her something and she had made her peace with both.
Tuesday morning she was called into Park Jisoo's office.
She had been in the middle of a paragraph — the third section of the revised project document, which she had been refining since Friday. She closed her laptop and went.
Park Jisoo was at her desk with the expression she wore when she was delivering information she had not originated and could not explain but felt obligated to pass on anyway — direct but slightly removed, the specific professionalism of someone doing the right thing within constraints they did not fully control.
"Sit down."
So-yi sat.
"I want to tell you something before it becomes public information or before you hear it in a version that's less clear than what I can give you now." Park Jisoo looked at her directly. "The leadership is conducting a review of the internship program. Specifically the marketing team's positions. There's no confirmed outcome yet — this is a review, not a decision. But I thought you should know it's happening."
So-yi listened.
She processed.
She said: "Thank you for telling me."
"The timing isn't ideal. Your work has been strong — that's documented and it will be part of whatever assessment happens. I want you to know that."
"I appreciate it."
Park Jisoo nodded. The nod of someone who had done what she could do. "Continue with the project. Do good work. That's what you can control."
So-yi said she would. She stood. She went back to her desk.
Mirae looked up — Mirae always looked up when So-yi returned from anywhere, with the alert attention of someone who collected information and could tell when information was present.
"Everything okay?"
"Update on the project," So-yi said. "Nothing urgent."
She opened her laptop.
She found the paragraph she had been in the middle of and read it back to herself and continued it, because Park Jisoo was right and continuing to do good work was what she could control and she was a person who focused on what she could control.
The paragraph took eleven minutes.
After she finished it, she sat for a moment with her hands still on the keyboard and did not type anything, because what she was doing in that moment was not the paragraph but the thing she had been doing since Saturday: fitting pieces together, looking for the shape of what was taking form.
Two things. The intern review — now confirmed from a source she trusted. Her father's promotion review — announced without explanation after twenty years of unremarkable performance, initiated by a question from a third party that had no specific name or face.
Two things, proximate in time, both affecting her without touching her directly.
She thought about how you did that. How you created pressure on someone without leaving fingerprints on the pressure. You went through systems. You found the people who controlled the systems and you introduced the question or the concern or the anonymous feedback at the right level through the right channel, and the system did what systems did — it followed its own procedures, produced its own outcomes, and the person who had introduced the initial element was nowhere visible in the chain.
This required knowledge. Of the systems, of the people who ran them, of which levers to touch and at what angle.
It also required a reason.
She thought about reasons.
She thought about a woman she had never met who had spent forty years managing the position of a family that she had also, apparently, spent considerable effort building. A woman for whom the match between her son and a particular family's daughter was not a romantic question but a structural one — a thing that had been decided based on the logic of the world she had constructed and that was therefore, when it appeared to be threatened, a thing to be defended using the tools of that world.
So-yi was a tool problem in someone else's system.
She sat with this framing and found it clarifying rather than diminishing. Diminishing would have meant taking it personally in the way of someone who believed the attack was about their worth. She did not believe that. The attack was about her position — her position relative to Ha-jun, in the geometry of someone else's plan. It was not about who she was. It was about where she was standing.
This was useful to understand.
At lunchtime she walked the route she usually walked — past the building with the black glass, which was the route, which she had not adjusted and would not adjust because adjusting it would be a form of giving ground she had not agreed to give. She looked at the building as she passed it the way she looked at everything: directly, without drama.
She stopped.
Not for long — she was aware of the pavement around her, the lunchtime movement of people, the particular awkwardness of standing still when everyone else was going somewhere. She stopped for the length of two breaths.
She looked at the building.
She had looked at it many times. From her office window, from the bus, from the lobby on the morning she had taken the stairs. She had looked at it with curiosity, with the specific attentiveness of someone who was interested in what was inside. She looked at it now with something more layered than curiosity — the knowledge that the building contained not only the person she had been thinking about but also the system that person had been born into, and that the system had teeth, and that the teeth had, apparently, found her.
She continued walking.
On the bus home, she thought about whether to contact him.
She organized the argument on both sides with the precision she brought to arguments she needed to be honest about.
For telling him: he did not know — or she believed he did not know, and she believed her own assessments of people, which told her that the man who had walked thirty meters of pavement without deciding to and had said this is not a context to optimize for winning was not the same man who had set in motion what she believed had been set in motion. He had a right to know that something was happening in the orbit of the thing between them. And she was not a person who withheld information from people who had a stake in it as a form of self-protection.
Against telling him: she had no proof. None. She had a timeline and two data points and a feeling about how power moved in the world she had been reading about for six weeks. She had nothing she could show him. And putting something this large in front of him without evidence was a different kind of risk — not to herself, but to the thing between them, which was still new enough to be fragile in ways she had not fully mapped.
She looked out the window at the city.
She decided: not yet. Not because she was afraid and not because she was protecting herself. Because incomplete information produced incomplete decisions, and she had learned this, and she was going to apply it here.
She would wait until she knew more.
At home she stopped at Mrs. Yoon's door — not because she had planned to, just because the door was there and the light was on underneath it and she was tired in the way of someone who had been holding something by themselves all day and needed, for a few minutes, to be in the presence of someone who did not require anything of her.
Mrs. Yoon answered and looked at her face and said: "Tea."
They sat at the small table. The apartment was the apartment — the plants, the specific stillness, the television on but muted. So-yi drank her tea and let the day sit at a slight distance for a moment.
Mrs. Yoon looked at her.
"There's something," she said. It was not a question.
So-yi looked at her tea. "There's something," she confirmed.
"Work?"
"Partly."
"The other part?"
So-yi looked up. Mrs. Yoon was looking at her with the look she had — the look that did not require you to explain everything, only to confirm that there was something to explain. So-yi had come to understand this look as a form of kindness: the acknowledgment without the interrogation.
"I'm working through it," So-yi said. "Not done yet."
Mrs. Yoon nodded. She refilled So-yi's cup without asking. They sat in the quiet for another ten minutes and did not talk about it, which was exactly what So-yi needed.
Upstairs, she opened the notebook.
The page with the two items and the line between them. She wrote a third item: Jisoo confirmed — review of intern positions, no outcome yet.
She looked at the three items.
She wrote: these have a pattern. Patterns have authors. The author is not him.
She stopped.
She picked up the pen again and wrote: but he is the reason it exists. And at some point — soon, probably — we will both have to stand in that fact and decide what we do with it.
She looked at what she had written.
She underlined the last sentence.
Then she closed the notebook and looked at the ceiling — the low ceiling, the familiar marks, the east-facing window dark with the night outside. The city was out there doing what the city did, indifferent and enormous, full of ten million lives proceeding according to their own logic.
Her father was in a town forty minutes outside the city, probably reading, probably not thinking about the review because he had decided not to let himself think about it until there was something specific to think about, which was how he dealt with things and which she had inherited from him more than she'd previously understood.
The person who had made a phone call — or had someone make a phone call — was somewhere in the city, having concluded that they had done what was necessary.
She was in her room, in the dark, knowing more than she had known last week and less than she would need to know to do anything with it.
This was where she was.
She was not going to pretend it was somewhere else.
She turned off the lamp.
She lay in the dark and let herself be tired, which was its own kind of honesty, and then she let herself sleep, because tomorrow would require what tomorrow required and she was going to be present for it.
