She had always been good at collecting information.
This was not a skill she advertised — it was not the kind of thing you advertised, the capacity to synthesize what people said with what they did not say, to read the gaps in conversations, to notice which topics produced which kinds of careful responses in which kinds of people. She had developed it young, in the specific environment of a family that operated through implication rather than statement, where what was meant and what was said occupied different registers and you had to learn to hear both simultaneously or you would be perpetually confused about what was actually happening around you.
She had learned.
By Sunday morning, she knew the following: Myung-ja had taken action — she had inferred this from the specific quality of a conversation with her own mother earlier in the week, from a reference to something Myung-ja had said that was careful in the way things were careful when they were not the whole of what had been said. She knew Ha-jun had gone to see his mother on Saturday — she knew this because she knew someone in the household staff, in the indirect way that people in her world knew people in each other's household staffs, which was a form of information infrastructure that no one discussed openly because discussing it would require acknowledging it existed. She knew the meeting had not produced the outcome Myung-ja had wanted, because of a different conversation, a different gap, a different careful register.
And she knew, from what she had seen at the event two weeks ago and from what she had been assembling since, that Ha-jun had met with the other person afterward.
She sat with all of this on Sunday morning, in the chair by the window, with coffee she had made and was not drinking.
The city outside was the Sunday version of itself — slower, with a different quality of movement, the particular Sunday pace of a city that had given its population permission to exist at less than full speed for one day. She had always found Sunday mornings useful for thinking. The reduced pace of the outside world seemed to allow a corresponding reduction of something in her — the management, the performance, the constant calibration of how she was appearing and whether it was correct. On Sunday mornings, she could think in something closer to her own voice.
Her own voice said: you are tired.
Not tired as in fatigued, though she was that too. Tired as in: she had been running at a particular level of effort for two years and the effort had not produced the thing she had been running toward, and the gap between the effort and the outcome was now large enough that she could see it clearly, and seeing it clearly was itself exhausting in a way that the not-seeing had not been.
She had loved him. She was still honest enough with herself to say this: she had loved Ha-jun, in the specific way you loved someone you had chosen to love — not the involuntary love of someone you had not chosen, but the deliberate love of someone you had looked at clearly and decided was worth the effort of loving. She had seen who he was. She had understood the distances in him and had decided they were worth working toward rather than around. She had chosen this.
But choosing something did not mean it would choose you back.
And what she had seen at the event — what she had seen in the corridor, in the fraction of a second before she had composed her face into the correct expression — had told her, with the clarity of something she had been avoiding seeing, that the distance was not going to close. Not toward her. The direction he was moving was elsewhere, and she had watched him move in that direction for long enough now to understand that it was not a temporary deviation from the path that led to her. It was the path.
She put down her coffee.
Her phone rang.
Her mother.
She answered with the warmth she always used with her mother — genuine warmth, she had never had to perform affection for her mother, it was one of the things she was grateful for. They talked for a few minutes about the week, about her father's schedule, about a family occasion the following month.
Then her mother said: "Myung-ja called yesterday. She wants to move the announcement forward. A public event — the charity gala in November. Both families present."
Yeon-hee was quiet for a moment.
"She wants to do it there?"
"She thinks it's the right moment. Visible, the right people, a positive occasion." Her mother's voice had the quality of someone relaying information they had not originated. "She asked whether you would be comfortable with November."
Yeon-hee looked at the window.
She understood exactly what Myung-ja was doing. A public announcement at a visible event with both families present was not a celebration — it was a structure. It was the construction of a fact that would be harder to undo than a private understanding, because undoing public facts required public explanations, which required reasons, which required someone to be the person who had the reasons. Myung-ja was building a wall that would make it harder for Ha-jun to walk away, and she was doing it in November, which was six weeks from now, which was a timeline that suggested urgency.
She said: "I'll think about it. Can I let you know by the end of the week?"
Her mother said of course. They said goodbye with the warmth they always said goodbye with.
Yeon-hee set the phone down.
She sat in the chair and thought.
She had been thinking, since the night she had stood at her window and asked herself what she wanted, about what the options actually were. She had thought about them with the systematic thoroughness she brought to problems that mattered — mapping the outcomes of each path, identifying the costs, assessing what each cost would require of her.
If she ended the engagement: her family would bear the consequences. Not catastrophic consequences, her family was not without resources or connections, but reputational consequences, relational consequences, the specific costs of being the family whose daughter had withdrawn from an arrangement with the Kangs. These were real costs. She had not been able to find a way around them.
Unless she was not the one who ended it.
She had arrived at this thought three days ago and had been circling it since, examining it from different angles, testing whether it was the thought she thought it was or whether it was something she was constructing to justify something she had already decided.
If Ha-jun ended the engagement — if Ha-jun was the one who withdrew, for reasons that were his rather than hers — the costs redistributed. They would not disappear. There would be commentary, speculation, the particular social texture of a broken engagement in a world where such things were noted and remembered. But the commentary would be about him, not her. She would be the woman it had not worked out for — which carried its own costs, but different ones, survivable ones, ones that did not require her family to absorb the impact of her choice.
She was not causing Ha-jun to end it. He was already ending it — or moving in that direction, which was the same thing in this world, where direction was as definitive as arrival. She had seen it. Myung-ja had seen it. The difference was that Myung-ja was trying to stop it and Yeon-hee was — she held the thought clearly — not trying to stop it.
But there was a difference between not stopping something and actively using it.
She called Myung-ja.
The call was the call it needed to be — warm, appropriate, the specific register of a daughter-in-law-to-be speaking with the mother of the man she was intended to marry. She said she was thinking about November and wanted to make sure the timing made sense given everything that was happening. She said she had heard, through a shared acquaintance, that Ha-jun had been seen meeting with someone from a company they had recently worked with — she said it casually, as a piece of information she was sharing because it seemed relevant, because she thought Myung-ja would want to know.
She did not say: this happened after he went to see you on Saturday.
She did not need to say it. Myung-ja was not a person who needed things said.
Myung-ja thanked her for calling. She said it was helpful to know. She said she would be in touch about November.
Yeon-hee said goodbye with warmth and ended the call.
She sat very still for a moment after.
She had done it. She had taken the information she had — that Ha-jun had met with So-yi after the confrontation with his mother — and placed it in Myung-ja's hands. Not as a weapon she was handing over. As information that Myung-ja would use as a weapon, which was a different thing, and not a different enough thing, and she knew this.
She had used the thing she felt to accomplish the thing she needed.
That was the sentence she had been trying not to say to herself, and she said it now, clearly, without softening it: she had taken what remained of what she had felt for Ha-jun and converted it into a lever. She had done this consciously, with full knowledge of what she was doing, because the alternative was to continue carrying what she had been carrying and she was not able to carry it for another year or two years or however long it would have taken for the thing to reach its own conclusion without her participation.
She was tired.
That was the truest thing she could say about why she had done it. Not cruelty, not strategy, not the coldness that people attributed to women who made these kinds of decisions. Just: she was tired, and this was the way out that did not require her to be the one who left, and she had taken it.
She called her mother back.
"November is fine," she said. "But I want to talk to you about the timeline before we confirm with Myung-ja. Can we have lunch this week?"
Her mother was pleased. They arranged Thursday.
Yeon-hee ended the call and looked at her phone for a moment — the screen, the time, the small ordinary object that had just been the instrument of several significant things.
That evening, she went to her mirror.
The same mirror. The same face — composed, managed, the face she had presented to the world for long enough that she sometimes forgot what it looked like when it wasn't presenting anything. She looked at it for a long time.
She thought about Ha-jun. She thought about two years of choosing to love someone who was not moving toward her. She thought about the night at the event, the corridor, the fraction of a second. She thought about the chair by the window and the question she had started asking herself and the answer that had arrived slowly, over weeks, and was now simply there: she was tired, and she wanted to stop, and she had found a way to stop that she could live with.
She asked herself: can you live with this.
Not with the ease of someone who had made a costless decision. With the honesty of someone who knew the costs and was asking whether she could bear them.
The answer was yes.
Not yes because it was easy. Yes because the alternative was no — because continuing was the thing she had determined she could not do, and if continuing was not possible, then the question was not whether to stop but how, and she had found a how that she could stand in.
She turned away from the mirror.
She went to make tea.
The city was outside, doing what it did on Sunday evenings — settling into the last hours of the weekend, preparing, in whatever way cities prepared, for the week ahead. She drank her tea by the window and watched it.
She did not feel good about what she had done.
She did not feel bad about what she had done, either.
What she felt was something more specific than either: the particular clarity of someone who has made a decision they understand fully and will have to live with, and who has decided that living with it is preferable to the alternative.
That was where she was.
She finished her tea.
She prepared for the week.
She went to bed and, for the first time in longer than she could specifically recall, she did not lie awake with the question of what she wanted.
She knew what she wanted.
She was in the process of getting it.
It was not a comfortable process.
But it was hers.
