She woke at five-forty.
Not the alarm — the alarm was set for six-fifteen, and it was still dark outside, the city in the last portion of its night before the day began to assemble itself from the east. She lay in the dark for a moment and listened to the neighborhood, which was quiet in the way it was quiet at this hour: deeply, without the texture of people yet, just the ambient sound of a city breathing.
She got up.
She made coffee — real coffee, not the instant she used on mornings when she was in a hurry, but the kind that required the kettle and the pour-over and the four minutes of waiting that she usually didn't have. She had them this morning. She was not in a hurry. She had woken up because something had shifted in the night and she needed to be awake with it before the day came and filled the space.
She took her coffee to the window.
The small east-facing window, the one that would catch the light in an hour when the sun had risen enough, the one she had been looking out of since the first morning in this room. The neighborhood below was beginning — she could see the light in Mrs. Geum's convenience store, which opened earlier than most things, and the shape of someone moving at the far end of the alley, and the particular darkness of the buildings that was just beginning to become the darkness before light rather than the darkness of night.
She thought about what he had said.
Not for the first time — she had been thinking about it since she had walked home through the alley the previous evening, since she had sat with Mrs. Yoon for twenty minutes without saying much, since she had lain in the dark trying to sleep and not sleeping for a while and then sleeping and waking before the alarm.
I need you to know that I don't want that. Before you decide. I need it to be in the room when you decide.
She turned the sentence over.
She had been trying to understand exactly what it was that the sentence did — not emotionally, she understood that, but structurally. What it changed about the situation.
He had not told her what to decide. He had not argued against the logic of stepping back — he had heard that logic, she could tell, had understood its weight, had not dismissed it. He had not said: you're wrong to consider it. He had said: I need to be in the room.
There was a difference.
The difference was that he was not trying to control the outcome. He was trying to ensure that the decision, whatever it was, was made with the full information — including the information of what he wanted, which was a thing she had not had, had been making decisions without, had been in the question without.
She had been deciding, in the weeks since the hotel, without putting him fully in the equation. Not because she had forgotten him — she had not forgotten him, he was entirely present in the question. But she had been calculating the costs and benefits of the situation as if her part of it were the only part that required active choice. As if his part were a fixed variable rather than something that was also being chosen, continuously, by a person who was also choosing.
He was choosing.
He had been choosing for months — in a bakery, at a bus stop, in the car on the way to Worldcup-ro, in a conversation with his father, in a park on a Saturday afternoon. He was choosing and he was not stopping and he had said so, directly, in the specific direct way that was his.
She drank her coffee.
She went to her desk and opened the drawer where she kept the paper — the folded paper from the night before the first day, which she had read and reread and which still said what it had always said. She unfolded it and read it again.
The way she had talked to the girl in the waiting room. The way she had helped Mr. Park without thinking about it. The way she had stood outside the building for one full minute and let herself be there before going in. The way she had, all her life, found it easier to be honest than to perform.
She took a pen.
She wrote at the bottom of the page, below what was already there, in the same small even handwriting that tilted slightly forward:
Love also needs to be protected. Not by keeping it safe — by being willing to stand in it when it isn't.
She looked at what she had written.
Then she folded the paper and put it back in the drawer.
She finished her coffee.
She sat at her desk and thought about her father.
The question that had stopped her — the question she had been unable to answer for weeks — was whether she had the right to stay when staying meant her father paid a cost he had not chosen. She had been unable to answer it because the answer required something from him that she had not asked for: his actual opinion, not the opinion he performed for her protection.
She picked up her phone.
His number. She called it.
He answered on the third ring — later than usual, which meant he had been somewhere that required walking to the phone rather than the phone being near him. "So-yi-ya."
"Dad." She paused. "I need to tell you something and then I need to ask you something."
A brief pause on his end — the pause of someone who had recognized that this was not the usual call. "Go ahead."
She told him. Not everything — not Ha-jun by name, not the full architecture of the situation. But the relevant part: that the things happening to his career were likely connected to her, to a situation she was in, and that she had known this for some time and had been trying to decide what to do with it.
She waited for him to speak.
He was quiet for a moment that was longer than his usual pauses. Then he said: "I know."
She looked at the window. "You know."
"Not the details. But I'm not — " He stopped. When he continued, his voice had the quality it had when he had decided to stop managing her impression of a thing and simply say the thing. "I'm not a naive man, So-yi. I've been in the public service for twenty years. I know how pressure works, and I know where it usually comes from, and I made some guesses about why this particular pressure arrived when it did."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"Because it wasn't mine to say. It's your life. You're the one who has to live it." A pause. "And because I didn't want you to make a decision based on me."
She pressed her eyes closed for a moment.
She said: "What do you actually think? Not what you think I should do. What do you think."
He was quiet.
Then: "I think you're asking me because you want permission. And I think you already know I'm going to tell you that it's not mine to give." His voice was even, measured, the voice of someone who had thought about what he was going to say if this conversation ever happened. "I've spent my whole life doing work I believed in, in a system that doesn't always reward what it's supposed to reward, and I've managed. This is one more thing I'll manage. That's not bravery — it's just how things work, and I'm old enough to know that."
She waited.
"What I don't want," he continued, "is for you to live a smaller life because of something that happened to me. The things that happen to me are mine to deal with. Your life is yours to live." A pause. "Whatever that means for you right now."
She was quiet for a long moment.
She said: "I love you, Dad."
He said: "I know. I love you too. Now stop worrying about me and go live your Saturday."
She ended the call.
She sat at her desk with her hands flat on the surface and looked at the window and the light that was now fully there — the morning having arrived while she was on the phone, the east-facing window doing what it did, the specific gold of the early light on the corner of the wall where the calendar still hung.
She had her answer.
Not from her father — he had given her what he had given her, which was the honest version of what he thought, which was: this is yours. But the answer had been forming for longer than this morning, longer than the park yesterday, longer than the nights of sitting with the question. It had been forming since the day she had stood outside the building and given herself one full minute to be there before going in. It had been forming since the bakery, since the stairwell, since the lobby in the rain. It had been forming every time she had looked at something true and chosen to keep looking instead of looking away.
She was not going to step back.
Not because it wasn't complicated. It was complicated — it was going to continue to be complicated, and there were costs she would pay and people she loved who would be affected and things she could not predict or control. She was not stepping back because the complications had disappeared. She was staying because the version of herself that stepped back to avoid them was not the version she recognized in the mirror or in the handwriting that tilted slightly forward or in the way she had learned to stand in things.
She picked up her phone.
She typed four words.
I'm not stepping back.
She sent it.
She put the phone face-down on the desk and did not wait for the reply — not because she didn't want to know what he said, but because the decision was not contingent on the reply. The decision was made. It had been made, she understood now, in pieces over months, and this morning it had finished being made.
She stood up.
She went to make more coffee.
The neighborhood was fully awake now — the sounds of it coming through the window, the Saturday morning version: Mrs. Oh's cart, probably, and the brothers from next door, and somewhere Nara's voice, high and specific, saying something to someone. The world she had built in this place, the world that had been here when she arrived and that she had become part of, was doing what it did.
She was part of it.
She was also part of something else now — something she had not expected and had not chosen in advance but had arrived at through the accumulated choices of months, small choices and then larger ones, each one building on the last. She did not know where it went. She had stopped pretending that she needed to know where it went before she could choose to be in it.
She was in it.
That was the decision.
She drank her second coffee at the window, watching the Saturday morning, and felt — not happiness, not relief, not the clean resolution of a story that had arrived at its conclusion. Something more complicated and also more true: the specific feeling of someone who has chosen to stand in a hard place and knows it is hard and has chosen it anyway.
Her phone buzzed on the desk.
She left it there for a minute.
Then she went and picked it up.
