She left the house at seven-twenty.
This was earlier than necessary. The bus she needed left at seven forty-two, which meant she had time — more time than she usually gave herself, more than the commute required. But she had woken at six and lain in bed for forty minutes trying to feel normal about the day, and at some point the trying had become more exhausting than simply getting up, so she had gotten up, made rice, eaten it standing at the window, and left.
The neighborhood was in its early-morning version of itself — the version that existed before the full day got underway, when things were quieter and the light had not yet committed to being bright. Mrs. Geum's convenience store was open but empty. The brothers from the building next door were not yet at the alley entrance. Even the dog that had developed opinions about the mail carrier was apparently still asleep.
So-yi walked through it slowly, her bag on her shoulder, her shoes making the sound shoes make on pavement that is still slightly cold from the night.
She was not afraid. She wanted to be precise about this — it was not fear, what she was feeling. It was the feeling that exists just before something new, when the shape of the new thing is not yet known and the shape of the old thing is still present and both of them occupy the same moment, briefly, before one gives way to the other. A feeling that had no clean name. That sat in the chest like a held breath.
She turned the corner at the end of the alley.
Bà Oh was at the entrance to the main street, loading the last of the morning's stock onto her cart — the green cart with the stubborn wheel, familiar now as a landmark. She looked up when she heard So-yi's footsteps.
"Early today."
"Couldn't sleep."
"First day."
It was not a question. So-yi nodded anyway.
She fell into step beside the cart, the way she always did on mornings when their timing coincided, and for a few minutes they moved together toward the corner where Mrs. Oh set up — So-yi taking the back of the cart on the slope without being asked, the wheel behaving itself today, the morning cooperating. They talked the way they usually talked: about the weather, which was cold but clear; about the neighbor two buildings down who had painted his door a color that had generated sustained commentary in the alley; about nothing in particular, which was its own kind of everything.
At the corner, Mrs. Oh stopped the cart and began arranging the display. She looked at So-yi with the assessing look she sometimes had — the look of someone who has been watching people for a long time and finds them legible.
"You look different today," she said.
"Different how?"
Mrs. Oh considered. "Like you're carrying something. Not heavy. Just — present." She waved a hand at the cart. "Go. You'll miss your bus."
So-yi went.
She thought about what Mrs. Oh had said on the bus, in the warm crowded morning transit of the city moving toward its working day. Carrying something. She supposed that was accurate. She was carrying the day ahead of her — the newness of it, the unknown texture of it, the question her mother had asked that she still did not have an answer to. Will you be okay, being you.
She supposed she would find out.
She got off two stops early.
This was not planned. Her stop was the one directly in front of the company building, but she found herself pulling the cord a stop before, stepping off into the cold morning air, and walking the remaining distance on foot. She needed, she thought, the extra minutes. The extra pavement under her feet. The transition time between the life she had come from this morning and the life she was about to enter.
The street was busy at this hour — the full morning rush, people moving with the collective urgency of a city in the middle of getting to where it needed to be. So-yi moved against the grain of it, not slowly but without the urgency, taking up her own pace in the middle of everyone else's.
She stopped on the pavement across from the company building.
The same spot she had stood in before her interview. Same view — the blue-green glass of her building, the black glass of the building beside it, the street between her and both of them. But different light today, and a different quality of attention. She was not looking at the building she was about to enter. She was looking at the one beside it.
In the daylight, the black glass was different from how it looked at night or in the gray afternoon of her interview day. In the morning light it caught the sky — not reflecting it cleanly the way ordinary glass would, but absorbing it, taking the blue of it and making it darker, denser, as if the building was made of something that consumed light rather than bounced it back.
She thought about the figure at the window.
She had thought about it more times than was reasonable, she knew. It was a silhouette. A shape. A person standing in a building going about their day, seen once from a distance and remembered with a specificity that the original observation did not warrant. She had no explanation for why it stayed with her. She had stopped looking for one.
She was still looking at the building when she heard the sound.
Wheels on pavement — the specific sound of a wheeled cart on a slight downgrade, moving faster than it should. She turned toward it automatically.
An old woman, smaller than Mrs. Oh and slower, was struggling with a cart piled high with cleaning supplies — mops and brooms bundled together, plastic bottles in a crate, a large bag of something soft tied to the side. The cart had caught the same drainage groove that Mrs. Oh's caught regularly, and the old woman had her full weight against the handlebar trying to free it, and the cart was winning.
So-yi looked around.
The people nearest were moving past with the focused inattention of morning commuters. No one slowed.
She put her bag down on the pavement.
She had crossed half the distance to the cart when the door of the building opened.
She did not look up immediately. She was focused on the cart — on the angle she needed to approach at, on where to put her hands, on the specific geometry of wheel and groove and slope that she had learned from Mrs. Oh's cart on a dozen mornings. She crouched beside the wheel and found the problem — the front left wheel had caught at an angle — and began working it free with both hands.
Above her, footsteps. The particular sound of a group of people moving in formation, unhurried but purposeful.
She heard them stop.
She worked the wheel free. It took thirty seconds, maybe forty. She stood up, placed herself behind the cart, and pushed it up and over the drainage groove in one motion. The cart settled onto level pavement. The old woman exhaled.
"Thank you, thank you —"
"It's the groove," So-yi said. "It catches if you come at it straight on. Better to angle left a little."
The old woman nodded, absorbing this practical information with the relief of someone who would use it. So-yi helped her straighten the load — one of the brooms had shifted — and then stepped back.
She picked up her bag.
She turned around.
He was standing six meters away.
She knew immediately that she had seen him before — not the way you know a face you can name, but the way you know something you have looked at carefully without realizing you were doing so. The height. The stillness. The way he stood as if the space around him had been organized rather than occupied.
And then she understood.
The figure at the window.
She did not know how she knew. She could not have seen his face from across the street, at that distance, through that glass. But something in the quality of the stillness — the particular way he was standing now, looking at her, not moving, as if he had arrived at a calculation and was waiting to see if the answer held — matched something she had stored without a name and now suddenly had a name for.
He was looking at her.
Not the way people looked at someone who had just done something notable. Not with surprise or assessment or any of the things she might have expected from a person in his position — she had identified his position in the half-second after she recognized the stillness, reading the suit, the men around him, the car at the curb with the door held open. He was looking at her the way you look at something you recognize and cannot account for recognizing.
She felt her heart do something irregular.
She looked at him for — she would not have been able to say how long. Long enough. Long enough that it was a moment rather than a glance, a moment that both of them were present in and neither of them filled with anything.
Then she looked away.
Not because she was flustered — she examined this carefully, in the half-second she had for examining things, and it was not quite flustered. It was something more like the feeling of having looked at something very bright: the need to look away not because the light was bad but because you could only hold it for so long.
She turned to the old woman, said something brief and kind, and then she straightened, adjusted her bag on her shoulder, and walked toward the entrance of her building.
She did not look back.
She told herself this was because there was nothing to look back at — a stranger on a pavement, a moment that had lasted seconds and meant nothing, a coincidence of timing and proximity that happened constantly in a city this size. She told herself this in the time it took her to cross the street and reach the entrance and push through the glass doors into the lobby.
The lobby was warm. There were other people arriving — her colleagues, she supposed, though she did not know their faces yet. She moved toward the elevator bank.
The elevator arrived. She stepped in. The doors closed.
In the reflective surface of the elevator door, she saw her own face.
She looked, she thought, like someone who had just been startled by something they should not have been startled by. Alert in a way the morning did not quite account for. Present in a way that was slightly too much.
The elevator began to rise.
Her heart was beating faster than it should have been.
She had no explanation for this that she was willing to examine right now, standing in an elevator on the first day of her new job, about to walk into a room full of people who would form their first impression of her in the next twenty minutes.
She took a breath.
Let it out.
The elevator reached her floor.
The doors opened, and she walked out into the first day, carrying whatever it was she was carrying, which she had not yet found a name for and would not, she suspected, find one easily.
Behind her, six floors below and across the width of a street, a car door closed.
And the morning continued, in both buildings, as mornings do — moving forward without pausing to account for what had just happened in the space between them.
