Mia had sent her reply three days after the dinner at the clinic, a single line she'd rewritten more times than she wanted to admit before finally settling on the simplest, truest version she could manage: Yes. I want to try again too. For real, this time.
Lucas had called her the moment he read it, his voice carrying an unguarded warmth she'd never heard from him before, not even during their easiest weeks together prior to the yarn incident. They'd talked for over an hour that night, not about logistics or careful boundaries, just about everything ordinary and unremarkable two people talk about when they've decided, mutually, to stop being careful with each other. It had felt, she thought afterward, like exhaling after weeks of holding her breath.
That had been four days ago. In the time since, they'd fallen into something that felt entirely new and entirely familiar all at once -- dinners that weren't disguised as business meetings, evenings on her sofa with Barnaby wedged contentedly between them, careful, tentative affection that neither of them rushed past its current gentle pace. Neither of them had said the word relationship out loud yet, both instinctively wary of moving too fast after everything the past month had cost them, but something steady and warm had settled into the space between them regardless, undeniable even without a name attached to it.
They'd agreed, without much discussion needed, to take things slowly this time -- not out of any lack of feeling, but out of a shared, unspoken respect for how fragile trust still felt in the wake of everything that had gone wrong. Lucas had said it plainly, one evening over dinner: I don't want to rush past anything important just because I'm relieved we're here at all. Mia had felt something settle at that, grateful for a partner who understood that healing sometimes needed more patience than passion alone could provide.
The cat show had been on Mia's calendar for weeks, an entry fee paid on impulse back when Barnaby's dramatic, oversized personality had struck her as objectively show-worthy, long before any of the complications of the past month had entered the picture, back when he was still just a chaotic, charming stranger's cat rather than the central figure in the story of her own heart. She'd nearly forgotten about it entirely until a reminder email arrived that morning, and she'd texted Lucas half-joking, half-serious, asking whether he wanted to accompany his own cat to a local pet appreciation fair's costume and talent competition.
His reply had come back within minutes: Wouldn't miss it. What does he need to wear.
The event, held in a converted community center a few blocks from Mia's apartment, buzzed with the specific chaos of dozens of anxious, overstimulated animals and their equally overstimulated owners, competing across categories ranging from Best Costume to Most Photogenic to, somewhat alarmingly, Best Trick. Barnaby, dressed in nothing more elaborate than a small, tasteful bow tie Mia had insisted on for the occasion, surveyed the proceedings from his carrier with the specific, imperious disdain of royalty forced to mingle with commoners.
"He's judging everyone here," Mia said, watching him observe a golden retriever attempting, unsuccessfully, to balance a treat on its nose several yards away.
"He judges everyone everywhere, honestly. This is simply a larger venue for his usual behavior." Lucas knelt to check the bow tie, adjusting it with the same careful precision he brought to everything, and Barnaby permitted the fussing with the specific, long-suffering patience of a creature who understood that dignity sometimes required minor sacrifices.
They wandered the event together for the better part of an hour, Barnaby drawing considerable attention wherever they went -- his sheer size, combined with the incongruous formality of the bow tie, made him something of a minor celebrity among the other attendees, several of whom stopped to ask for photos or simply to admire him from a respectful distance.
"He's magnificent," said one older woman, crouching to get a better look. "How long have you two had him?"
"About two months," Lucas said, before catching the phrasing and glancing at Mia, something warm passing between them at the accidental accuracy of the collective pronoun.
"He's a joint custody situation," Mia added, laughing, the phrase now familiar enough between them to feel like an inside joke rather than an awkward explanation. "Complicated history. Long story involving a power drill and several vet emergencies."
"Aren't all the good ones?" The woman winked, moving on to admire the next entry, leaving both of them smiling at each other with the specific, easy warmth that had become, over the past four days, their new and comfortable default.
The competition itself unfolded with the chaotic, good-natured energy typical of any event involving dozens of animals who hadn't consented to participate. Barnaby, entered somewhat optimistically in the Most Photogenic category, spent most of his allotted judging time attempting to climb out of his carrier to investigate a nearby table of treats, an act of blatant self-interest that, against all reasonable expectation, one of the judges apparently found utterly charming.
While they waited for the results, Mia found herself watching Lucas interact easily with several other pet owners nearby, answering questions about Barnaby's breed and temperament with the same patient thoroughness he brought to actual clinical consultations, clearly enjoying himself in a way that had little to do with professional obligation and everything to do with simple, uncomplicated pleasure in a good afternoon. It struck her, watching him crouch to let a small child pet Barnaby's head through the carrier bars, how far removed this version of him felt from the rigid, six-a.m.-drilling stranger she'd first encountered a lifetime ago, and how much of that transformation, she suspected, they'd built together rather than either of them accomplishing alone.
"He has personality," the judge said, scribbling notes on her clipboard with obvious delight. "Most of these cats just sit there looking miserable and refuse to engage with anyone. This one's got real opinions, and he's not shy about sharing them."
"He always has opinions," Lucas said. "Strong ones, usually."
When the results were finally announced, Barnaby, astonishingly, took home the ribbon for Fan Favorite -- awarded, according to the emcee, based on audience applause rather than formal judging criteria, which meant, essentially, that his sheer chaotic charisma had won over an entire room of strangers purely through unfiltered personality, without a single trick or costume required beyond a modest bow tie and an unwavering commitment to his own comfort.
"He won," Mia said, disbelieving, as the emcee called their names to collect the small purple ribbon.
"He actually won." Lucas's face broke into an unguarded grin, the specific, delighted expression she'd only seen from him a handful of times, usually connected somehow to this exact cat's continued existence in both their lives. Several nearby spectators applauded again as the ribbon was pinned to Barnaby's carrier, and a small child nearby asked, with the blunt honesty particular to young kids, whether the cat knew he'd won something.
"I don't think he cares about the ribbon specifically," Lucas told her, crouching down to the child's eye level with the same patient warmth he brought to nervous young pet owners at the clinic. "But he definitely cares that everyone's looking at him right now. That's really the whole prize, as far as he's concerned."
The girl giggled, satisfied with the answer, and skipped off to find her own entry -- a small, anxious terrier who had apparently placed nowhere at all, though its owner seemed considerably more distressed about the loss than the dog itself did.
Without quite thinking about it, Lucas pulled Mia into a hug, spinning her slightly in his excitement, and Mia laughed against his shoulder, arms wrapping around him instinctively, both of them caught up in a moment of pure, uncomplicated joy neither had expected a pet costume competition to provide.
The hug lasted longer than a simple celebratory embrace required. Neither of them pulled back first, both suddenly, acutely aware of how close they were standing, how naturally her head had settled against his shoulder, how his hand had come to rest at the small of her back without either of them consciously deciding it should. The noise of the community center faded into something distant and unimportant, the two of them standing together in their own small pocket of stillness amid the surrounding chaos, oblivious for a moment to the flash of a stranger's phone camera capturing what looked, from the outside, exactly like the kind of unguarded happiness neither of them had quite dared to expect from this particular ordinary Saturday.
"Mia." His voice, close to her ear, carried a rough, unguarded quality that made her pulse pick up its pace.
"Yeah?"
He pulled back just enough to look at her properly, his hands still resting lightly at her waist, something building behind his eyes that looked, for one suspended second, like it might finally break free of every careful boundary either of them had maintained since the doorway argument. Mia felt her own breath catch, the space between them charged with the specific, unbearable anticipation of a moment neither of them seemed quite ready to name out loud yet, both still too newly rebuilt to risk moving faster than the fragile trust between them could actually hold.
"There's something I keep almost saying," he admitted, quieter now, "and I don't think tonight, in the middle of a room full of strangers and one extremely smug cat, is the right place to finally say it properly. But I wanted you to know it's there. Waiting."
"I think I know what it is," Mia said, something warm and unsteady in her own voice. "And I think I'm not ready to hear it here either. Not because I don't want to. Because I want to actually be present for it, not distracted by Barnaby judging us both from his carrier."
"Fair enough." He smiled, something relieved and patient in the expression, and pressed a light, careful kiss to her forehead instead -- not the kiss either of them was actually holding their breath for, but a small, deliberate promise of one still to come, once they'd both earned the right moment for it properly.
"I think he's demanding recognition," Mia said, breathless.
"He's always demanding something." Lucas kept one hand at her waist, unwilling to fully release the contact even to attend to his own cat's wounded pride. "I think we should let this be his moment. We can celebrate ours later, somewhere with fewer feline witnesses."
"I'd like that." Mia smiled up at him, something settled and certain finally replacing weeks of careful hesitation, the specific quiet fullness of having said the true thing out loud and had it returned in kind.
She was still smiling, reaching down to scoop the indignant, ribbon-adorned cat back into her arms, when her phone buzzed insistently in her jacket pocket. She fished it out absently, expecting a text from Priya demanding updates, and felt her stomach drop entirely at the name lighting up her screen -- a name she hadn't seen appear on her phone in over a year, one she'd deliberately left unblocked only because deleting it had once felt, back when the wound was freshest, like giving him a victory he didn't deserve.
Julian.
The phone continued buzzing in her hand, insistent, and Mia stood frozen in the middle of the community center, ribbon-winning cat cradled against her chest, Lucas standing close enough beside her to see the sudden, unmistakable change in her expression, both of them staring down at the screen as it lit up again with a call neither of them had any way of anticipating.
She let it ring out, unable to make herself answer, and stood there for a long moment afterward, the small purple ribbon still clutched in one hand, the warm, unresolved almost-declaration from moments earlier now competing uneasily in her chest with the sudden, unwelcome resurgence of a name she'd hoped never to see on her screen again, at least not without significant warning first.
"Who was that?" Lucas asked, careful, clearly reading enough in her sudden change of expression to know the answer mattered a great deal.
"Julian." She said the name flatly, testing how it felt in her mouth after so long, and found it landed with less power than she'd feared and more than she'd hoped it would. "My ex. The one I told you about."
"The editor."
"The editor." She glanced down at the phone, now silent, a single missed call notification sitting starkly on the lock screen. "I haven't heard from him in over a year, not once. I don't know why he'd be calling now, of all possible times."
"Do you want to find out?"
Mia considered the question honestly, turning it over against the warm, still-unresolved weight of everything that had just happened between them moments earlier -- the almost-declaration, the promised kiss still waiting for its proper moment, the small, fragile new certainty they'd both just started building together, still too new and precious to risk disrupting over a name from a life she'd already left behind once. "Not tonight," she said finally. "Whatever it is, it can wait until tomorrow morning. Tonight is supposed to be about Barnaby's ribbon, and about us, not about reopening something I closed a long time ago."
"That's fair." Lucas's expression carried a flicker of something guarded despite his measured tone -- not quite jealousy, but adjacent to it, the specific unease of a man who had only just secured something fragile and precious and didn't relish the timing of an old complication resurfacing so soon after everything they'd both just rebuilt between them. "You don't owe him anything. Not even curiosity, if you don't want to give it."
"I know." She tucked the phone back into her jacket pocket, deliberately, decisively, and reached for his hand instead, lacing her fingers through his with the same easy, unthinking gesture that had become one of their most reliable shared languages over the past weeks. "Come on. Let's go find out if Barnaby's ribbon comes with an actual trophy, or if we've been celebrating a participation prize this whole time."
Lucas laughed, some of the tension easing from his shoulders, and let her pull him back toward the small awards table, Barnaby's carrier swinging gently between them, the interruption from Julian's call folded away for the evening, though neither of them fully released the small, uneasy awareness that whatever had prompted the call likely hadn't finished with them yet.
They stayed at the fair another hour, celebrating Barnaby's unlikely victory with considerably more enthusiasm than a Fan Favorite ribbon technically warranted, taking photos with the small purple rosette pinned somewhat precariously to his carrier, trading easy conversation with several of the other pet owners who'd taken a shine to their particular chaotic entry, none of them any wiser to the small, unresolved tension quietly sitting underneath Mia's otherwise easy smile. By the time they finally packed up to leave, the sun had begun its slow descent toward evening, casting long, warm light across the parking lot as they loaded Barnaby's carrier into the back seat of Lucas's car, the small purple ribbon still fastened proudly to its handle.
"Today was good," Mia said, settling into the passenger seat, Barnaby's indignant meowing muffled from the back seat behind them. "Better than good, actually."
"It was." Lucas started the car, glancing at her with a warmth that hadn't fully faded despite the interruption. "I meant what I almost said back there, by the way. In case that wasn't entirely clear given everything that happened right after."
"I know." Mia smiled, something settled and certain in the expression despite the small, unresolved knot of anxiety still sitting in her stomach over Julian's unexplained call. "I meant what I almost said back too. We'll get there properly. Soon."
"Soon," he agreed, and reached over to squeeze her hand once before pulling out of the parking lot, both of them quiet for a moment, comfortable in the specific, easy silence of two people who had just built something worth protecting, neither one yet ready to examine too closely what a reappearing name from her past might eventually mean for the fragile, hard-won peace they'd only just found.
That night, back at her own apartment, Barnaby settled contentedly on his favorite spot on her bed, ribbon still pinned to his little bow tie, worn now with the specific, satisfied pride of a champion who fully understood his own accomplishment. Mia sat beside him for a long while, phone in hand, staring at Julian's contact photo -- an old picture, taken years earlier, both of them younger and considerably less complicated than they'd since become.

She thought about texting Priya to tell her about the call, and decided against it, at least for tonight, wanting one more evening to hold the day's good parts -- the ribbon, the almost-declaration, the promise of something more still waiting on the other side of patience -- without immediately diluting them with the anxious speculation Priya's reaction would inevitably provoke. Tomorrow, she decided, she would find out what Julian actually wanted, armed with whatever clarity a full night's sleep could provide. Tonight belonged to Barnaby's ribbon, and to the quiet, steady warmth of a man who had waited, patiently, for exactly the right moment to say something he clearly meant.
