The mirror in Lenora Veyne's bathroom did not say good morning. It never had.
It blinked awake the moment her bare feet touched the heated tile, calibrating itself to the light, to her pulse, to the particular slope of exhaustion in her shoulders. A thin blue ring traced itself around her reflection, scanning, measuring, deciding.
SKIN SCORE: 62/100
She watched the number resolve in clean sans-serif above her own collarbone, hovering there like a verdict that had been waiting all night to be delivered.
"Good morning to you too," she muttered.
The mirror, helpfully, did not laugh. It simply offered, in its calm synthetic voice, three recommended products from the Maison Elaris evening repair line, each one priced like a small act of penance. Lenora reached past the holographic price tags and turned the water on instead, letting the sound drown out the suggestion before it could finish its sentence.
She had memorized this particular kind of math years ago. Sixty-two was not a tragedy. Sixty-two was a Tuesday. Sixty-two meant slightly more concealer around the nose, slightly less eye contact in meetings where the lighting ran unkind, and absolutely no looking too long at the mirror in the elevator at Maison Elaris, the one everyone called the Judgment Box because it scored you the second the doors closed and refused to look away until they opened again.
She was twenty-six years old and she had built an entire architecture of small adjustments around a number that changed every day for no reason anyone could ever explain to her satisfaction. It was, she sometimes thought, the most elaborate magic trick in Aster Veil — the way an entire city had agreed to be ruled by integers that meant nothing and everything at once.
"You're doing the thing," she told her reflection, the version of her that hadn't started chopping vegetables of self-criticism yet. "The thing where you let a number decide your whole morning."
The reflection, unhelpfully, agreed with her by doing nothing at all.
She showered fast, the way she always did, like efficiency could outrun thought. She dressed in the navy blazer that made her shoulders look less like shoulders and more like punctuation, something definite and unbothered. She applied concealer with the practiced hand of someone who had been hiding the same handful of acne scars since she was seventeen, blending until the texture beneath her fingers disappeared into something the world found easier to look at.
By the time she left her apartment, the version of Lenora that walked out the door bore only a passing resemblance to the one who'd woken up. This was not deception, she told herself. This was professionalism. This was the cost of admission to a city that ran on the currency of faces.
The train into the commercial district cut along the edge of the harbor, past the glittering spine of glass towers that made up the financial heart of Aster Veil, until it slid beneath the looming white facade of Bellara Court, the palace-shaped mall where half the city's commerce happened under chandeliers built to look two hundred years older than the wiring behind them. A livestream screen the size of a building wall played silently above the plaza, looping yesterday's most popular beauty content — a girl crying gratefully into a ring light because a serum had, apparently, changed her life.
Lenora did not let herself watch the screen for longer than it took to cross the plaza. She had learned not to. The screens in this city had a way of finding the exact bruise you didn't know you still had and pressing on it, gently, in HD.
Maison Elaris occupied the old opera house on Larkspur Row, its marble columns repurposed sometime in the last decade to frame something other than music. The lobby still had the original ceiling — gilt cherubs and painted clouds — but beneath them now ran three floors of glass-walled studios where livestream hosts sold serums under softbox lighting, and two floors below that, a research wing where people like Lenora turned chemistry into the language of hope.
She badged through the side entrance, the one that bypassed the public-facing lobby and its omnipresent mirror, and took the service elevator down into the labs.
This was the part of the building she loved without complication. No mirrors here. No scores. Just steel countertops, the low hum of refrigeration units, and the particular quiet of people who were good at their jobs and didn't need anyone's permission to know it.
"You look like the apocalypse," said Tessa Brynd, not looking up from the packaging mockups spread across her station. Tessa had been Lenora's closest friend since their second week at Elaris, back when they were both new enough to still believe the building's beauty obsessed culture might eventually loosen its grip. It hadn't. Tessa had simply decided, with her dyed copper curls and her refusal to apologize for the body that wore them, that she would survive it by being too loud to ignore.
"Sixty-two," Lenora said, by way of explanation, dropping her bag at her station.
"Out of a hundred, or out of ten? Because if it's out of ten, that's actually impressive."
"You know which scale."
"I do," Tessa said. "I just like watching you say the number out loud like it's a confession. It's a skin score, Lenora, not a war crime."
"Says the woman whose Market Face Score got her removed from the creative lead shortlist last year."
Tessa's mouth tightened for half a second before the grin came back, sharper this time. "Removed implies they considered me. I was never on the list. They just printed my name on it to make the spreadsheet look diverse."
It was the kind of joke that wasn't entirely a joke, the kind both of them had gotten very good at making, the humor doing the work that anger wasn't allowed to do out loud in a building like this one.
Lenora pulled up her station's interface and lost herself, gratefully, in viscosity numbers. This was the version of her that the mirror in her bathroom could never score, because there was no camera angle, no soft lighting, no audience for what she actually did well: coaxing molecules into formulas that made damaged skin barriers behave like they hadn't been damaged at all. She had three formulations currently in testing, none of them glamorous, all of them quietly excellent.
"Grey Chemist's at it again," said Marcus from two stations over, not unkindly. It was the nickname that had attached itself to her sometime in her second year — half compliment, half resignation. Brilliant in the lab. Invisible everywhere a camera might find her.
"Better than being the face who can't read a pH chart," Lenora said without looking up.
"Ouch," Marcus said, grinning, and went back to his own bench.
It should have stung less than it did. She had made peace with this particular shape of her career years ago — the talented hand nobody photographed, the formulator behind a hundred products whose actual face would never be the one selling them. There was a kind of safety in that invisibility, even if it came wrapped in a smaller indignity she rarely let herself examine too closely.
She didn't examine it now either. She had work to do, and work was the one place the city's arithmetic didn't reach her.
At lunch, she ate alone at her station, the way she usually did, scrolling absently through a research journal on barrier-repair lipids while half-listening to the studio floor above her hum with the rhythm of an ongoing livestream — applause cued at intervals, a host's voice rising and falling in practiced cadences of delight. Somewhere up there, someone was holding a bottle of something Lenora had likely had a hand in formulating, calling it life-changing in a voice built for exactly that purpose.
She had never minded the performance of it, not really. What she minded was the specific shape performance took in this building — the way every product had to be sold not as a tool, but as a verdict reversed. You were flawed; now you are less so. You were unlovable; now, perhaps, you are not. It was a transaction dressed up as transformation, and she had spent six years writing the chemistry that made the dressing convincing.
She thought, sometimes, that this made her a hypocrite. She believed in the formulas. She did not always believe in the funeral they were sold beside.
By mid-afternoon, the overheard conversation from the review room had settled into the back of her mind the way unwelcome thoughts tended to, not gone, just patient. She caught herself glancing toward the door of the formulation review room twice more before her shift ended, as if proximity might explain something her ears already had.
"You're doing it again," Tessa said, catching her mid-glance the second time.
"Doing what?"
"Staring at that door like it owes you money."
"I'm not staring at the door. I'm staring at the wall the door happens to be attached to."
"Uh huh." Tessa capped her stylus and turned fully toward her, the playful edge in her voice softening into something more direct. "For what it's worth, I think you'd be good at it. Whatever it is. You explain things in a way that makes people feel smart instead of stupid, which is a skill approximately four people in this entire building actually have. That includes the people whose actual job is talking to cameras."
"I appreciate the vote of confidence. I really do. But I have spent a great deal of energy building a career where my face is professionally irrelevant, and I'd like to keep it that way."
"Professionally irrelevant," Tessa repeated, tasting the phrase like it offended her personally. "You say that like it's a goal and not a coping mechanism."
Lenora didn't have a clever answer for that one, so she didn't try to find one. She closed her laptop instead, a little harder than necessary, and began packing up her station for the day.
"I'm not trying to dig at you," Tessa said, gentler now. "I just think you forget, sometimes, that the reason you're so good at fixing what's broken in other people's skin is that you've spent your whole life studying your own like a problem that needs solving. That's not a compliment to the company, by the way. That's just an observation about you."
"Noted," Lenora said, and meant it, even if she had no intention of doing anything with the observation that night beyond carrying it home with her like a stone in her coat pocket.
She said her goodbyes, gathered her things, and took the long way to the elevator, the one that avoided the Judgment Box mirror in the main lobby. It was, she was aware, a faintly ridiculous habit for a twenty-six-year-old woman with a graduate degree in cosmetic chemistry to maintain — routing her entire commute around a piece of furniture — but ridiculous habits had a way of feeling perfectly reasonable at seven in the evening after a day spent being quietly, persistently reminded of her own visibility's limits.
It was nearly noon when she overheard it — not eavesdropping exactly, just standing too close to the open door of the formulation review room when Odran Bell's voice carried out into the hallway, bright with the particular enthusiasm he reserved for numbers that were about to make someone money.
"—need a face for the new line. Someone the press hasn't already chewed through. Someone with a story."
"There's a difference between a story and a stunt," said a second voice, one of the brand directors, sounding less certain than Odran.
"Pain converts better than confidence," Odran said, like it was a proverb instead of a strategy. "We need someone the audience can root for. Someone who looks like she's earned the right to be beautiful."
Lenora kept walking before the conversation could notice her noticing it, the words trailing after her down the hallway like static.
She told herself it had nothing to do with her. There were a thousand women in this building who might fit whatever profile Odran was building in his head, and she was, by every metric that building cared about, not one of the obvious candidates.
"You heard that too?" Tessa asked when Lenora returned to her station, voice low.
"Heard what?"
"Don't do that. The thing where you pretend you weren't listening at the door like the rest of us." Tessa leaned in. "They're looking for a new face. For something big, apparently. Odran's been weird about it all week."
"Good for whoever gets picked," Lenora said, with more flatness than she meant to.
"You should put your name in."
Lenora laughed, the kind of laugh that came out before she could decide whether it was real. "I formulate the products, Tess. I don't model them."
"Why not?"
"Because I have a face that requires three different concealer shades and a personality that doesn't survive contact with a teleprompter."
"Your personality survives contact with me daily, and I am significantly worse than a teleprompter."
"You're not worse. You're just louder."
"Same thing, smaller font." Tessa bumped her shoulder against Lenora's, affectionate and unbothered, the way she bumped against most things in this building that tried to make her feel small. "I'm serious, though. You're smart, you're good on camera when you forget to be self-conscious about it, and you actually believe in half the stuff we make here. That's rarer than they'd have you think."
"I believe in the chemistry," Lenora said. "Not necessarily the marketing copy that goes on top of it."
"Spoken like someone who absolutely should not be allowed near a livestream, which is exactly why it would be hilarious."
Lenora let the conversation drop there, the way she let most conversations about her own visibility drop, gently and with practiced ease, like setting down something fragile before it could be examined too closely. She went back to her formulations. The viscosity numbers did not care what she looked like. The viscosity numbers had never asked her to be anyone's story.
She did, despite herself, catch her reflection once more before she left for the day — not in a smart mirror this time, just the plain dark glass of the lab's exit door, her own outline ghosted faintly against the hallway lights behind her. She looked, for one unguarded second, like someone who wanted to be looked at and had spent a very long time pretending otherwise.
She was still thinking about that look, half an hour later, on the train home, when her phone buzzed with a message from her assistant coordinator, the kind of message that never arrived at the end of an ordinary day.
*Selvara Voss would like to see you tomorrow morning. Personally. Please clear your schedule.*
Lenora read it twice. Selvara Voss did not personally request anyone. Selvara Voss had people for that, and people beneath those people, an entire architecture of distance built specifically so the Creative Chairwoman of Maison Elaris never had to know the names of formulators working three floors below her office.
Lenora typed back a single confirming word, set the phone face-down on her knee, and spent the rest of the ride home trying, and failing, to convince herself it didn't mean anything.
It was a Tuesday. She had scored a sixty-two. And somewhere above her, in an office with better lighting than the rest of the building combined, someone had finally noticed her name.
She thought about turning the lights back on in her apartment when she got home, about calling Tessa just to hear someone else's voice fill the space where her own anxiety wanted to live. Instead, she sat on the edge of her bed for a long moment with her coat still on, the message from her assistant coordinator glowing faintly on the screen in her lap, and let herself feel, honestly, the strange double current running through her chest — equal parts dread and a hope she was furious at herself for having.
She had spent years building a life around the assumption that she would never be asked. Asked to stand in front of a camera. Asked to be the story instead of the woman who wrote the chemistry behind someone else's. She had built that assumption carefully, the way she built formulas, testing it against every disappointment until it held weight reliably. It was a useful assumption. It meant she never had to find out what it might cost her to actually want something this building could give her, and then not get it.
Now there was a message on her phone that suggested, for the first time in six years, that the assumption might be wrong.
She finally stood, shrugged off her coat, and went to the bathroom to wash the day off her face. The smart mirror blinked awake again at the sound of running water, and for a moment she considered simply not looking, letting the score stay a mystery until morning. But old habits were old habits, and she found herself watching the blue ring trace itself around her reflection anyway.
SKIN SCORE: 64/100
Two points higher than the morning. Nothing had changed except the hour and the lighting, and yet the number still managed to feel like a small, undeserved kindness, the kind she didn't quite trust enough to enjoy.
She turned off the water, turned off the mirror, and went to bed without answering the question that had been sitting in her chest since the message arrived — whether she wanted Selvara Voss to have noticed her, or whether she simply wanted, after six years of being the hand behind the glass, to finally find out what it felt like to be looked at on purpose.
Sixty-four out of one hundred. A Tuesday becoming, against every instinct she had, something else entirely.
She did not dream about the number. She dreamed, instead, of a hallway she didn't recognize, doors on either side opening one by one onto rooms full of mirrors, none of them smart enough to score her, all of them simply showing her face back to her, unedited, unscored, entirely her own. In the dream she did not look away. She woke before she could decide whether that had been a comfort or a warning, and lay in the dark a while longer, listening to the city hum on without her, already counting down toward whatever tomorrow had decided to become.
