CyberCore's fourth floor smelled like burnt coffee and the particular desperation of people who had been in back-to-back meetings since eight in the morning. Arthur had claimed a desk near the window months ago specifically because it let him avoid eye contact with most of the floor by staring out at the skyline whenever a conversation grew unbearable, a strategy that had served him well until this particular Tuesday.
He was reviewing a pull request, three cups of coffee deep into a morning that had already produced two failed deployments and one strongly worded email from his manager, when a new hire from Product wandered past his desk, paused, backed up, and stood there staring at him with an expression Arthur could only describe as religious.
"Excuse me," the man said. He was tall, sharply dressed in a way that felt slightly out of step with the rest of the floor's business-casual chaos, with an unsettlingly intense gaze that made Arthur immediately suspicious. "Have we met before?"
"I don't believe so." Arthur kept his eyes on his monitor, hoping the universal signal for *please leave* would register.
"You seem... familiar. In a way that transcends this office." The man leaned closer, squinting, and then, without any warning whatsoever, dropped his voice to something between a whisper and a gasp. "Sire?"
Arthur's fingers froze over the keyboard.
"Excuse me?"
"Nothing! Nothing, forget it, I said nothing." The man straightened so fast he nearly knocked over a nearby plant, laughing in a pitch that fooled absolutely no one. "I meant 'sir.' Formal greeting. Very professional office culture, very respectful. I'm Malphas, by the way. New Product Manager. I'll be sitting three desks down, in case you need anything, or in case anything needs, uh, addressing. Together. As colleagues."
Arthur studied him for a long, uncomfortable moment. There was something in the shape of his face, some structural memory buried beneath three months of trying not to think about his old life, that itched at recognition without quite delivering it. He decided, for his own sanity, not to pursue the thought further.
"Right. Welcome to the team." Arthur returned to his screen, dismissing the encounter as one of the countless small absurdities that made up daily life in a building full of strangers who all seemed slightly unhinged in their own specific ways.
Malphas did not leave immediately. He hovered for another few seconds, staring at Arthur with an expression that shifted rapidly between terror, devotion, and something that looked uncomfortably like guilt, before finally retreating toward his desk, muttering to himself in a language that, had Arthur been paying closer attention, was distinctly not English.
By lunchtime, Malphas had positioned himself at the far end of the same break room table Arthur usually occupied, close enough to observe but ostensibly absorbed in his phone, glancing up every few seconds like a man convinced the building might collapse without warning. When Arthur reached for the shared coffee pot, Malphas flinched so visibly that a passing coworker asked if he was feeling alright.
"Perfectly fine," Malphas said, in a voice pitched several notes too high, before excusing himself abruptly and disappearing toward the stairwell, leaving his lunch half-eaten and his dignity somewhere behind him on the break room floor.
Arthur watched him go with mild, detached curiosity, filing the entire interaction under the same mental category as most things in this world that made no immediate sense — strange, probably meaningless, not worth the energy required to investigate further. He had a bug to fix and a meeting in twenty minutes. Whatever was wrong with the new Product Manager was, for now, someone else's problem.
He was not, in fact, paying closer attention. His mind had already drifted back to the conversation from the night before, replaying a specific sentence that had lodged itself somewhere behind his ribs and refused to leave: *Maybe not knowing the name is what makes it possible.*
He'd thought about that line more times than he cared to admit throughout the workday, in the gaps between meetings, while waiting for code to compile, while pretending to listen to a colleague explain a sprint retrospective. There was something dangerously comforting about a conversation with no stakes, no history, no consequences — and something equally dangerous about how much he was already looking forward to continuing it that night.
---
That evening, the messages picked up almost exactly where they'd left off, as though no time had passed at all.
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Had the strangest day. New guy at work looked at me like he'd seen a ghost. Twice. Within the same hour.*
Arthur's fingers paused over the screen.
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: That's oddly specific. Did he say anything?*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Just stared. Muttered something. Backed away slowly like I was going to attack him. It was very dramatic for a gym floor.*
Arthur exhaled, relief loosening something in his chest that he hadn't realized was tense. Different building. Different context. A coincidence, nothing more — the world was full of strange people who stared too long and muttered too much, and he refused to let one uncomfortable interaction at CyberCore make him paranoid about every odd encounter reported by a woman on the other side of a phone screen.
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: Some people just have poor social calibration. I had a similar incident today, unrelated I'm sure.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Unrelated ghost sightings, a pandemic sweeping the city. Someone should write a report.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I'll leave the reporting to someone with better bedside manner than me.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Fair. You'd probably write it like a legal deposition.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: "Subject displayed irregular staring behavior. Cause unknown. Recommend further observation." Something like that?*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Exactly like that. Concerning how naturally that came to you.*
He smiled at the screen, alone on the sofa, the sound of Diana moving around in the kitchen barely registering as background noise now, a rhythm he'd grown used to faster than he expected. He typed his next message without the usual pause for editing, the words arriving easier than they used to.
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: How was the rest of your day, ghost sightings aside?*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Exhausting. Had six sessions back to back. My roommate ate the last of my post-workout snack though, which is currently the more pressing crisis.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: The audacity.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Right? I'm considering legal action. Or at minimum, revenge.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: What form would this revenge take?*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Undecided. Possibly hiding his coffee mug. He seems weirdly attached to a specific mug. Cold and detached about everything else, but god forbid you touch the mug.*
Arthur glanced instinctively at his own coffee mug, sitting on the counter exactly where he'd left it that morning, and felt an odd flicker of something between amusement and unease that he chose not to examine too closely.
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: People attach meaning to strange objects when they've lost everything else that mattered. The mug is probably load-bearing at this point.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: That's a surprisingly poetic defense of a coffee mug.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I contain depths. Occasional depths. Mostly cynicism.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: I see what you did there.*
The conversation drifted on for another hour, easy in a way that neither of them had expected any conversation to feel again, two voices trading small grievances and smaller comforts across a gap neither could see the true size of.

Three desks down, Malphas sat at his own laptop that same evening, having stayed unusually late for someone who'd only started the job that week. He stared at a photograph he'd saved from an old, half-corrupted memory crystal he'd smuggled out of Pandemonium during the chaos of the collapse — a formal court portrait, stiff and severe, of a young Dark Lord seated on an obsidian throne, eyes the color of dying embers.
He compared it, for the fifth time that evening, to the mental image of the tired, bespectacled developer he'd spent all day awkwardly trying not to stare at.
"It's him," Malphas whispered to his empty apartment, hands trembling slightly around his lukewarm instant noodles. "It's actually him. After everything. After what I did."
He set the noodles down, unable to eat, weighed down by a guilt three months of exile hadn't managed to dull even slightly. He'd spent years serving at the foot of that throne, had once been trusted with secrets meant for no one else's ears, and had, in the end, made a choice under threat that he still couldn't fully justify to himself, whatever the circumstances had been.
He remembered the specific night it had happened — the pressure from the rival faction, the threats against people he'd cared about, the impossible calculation he'd made in the space of a few frantic minutes, choosing survival over loyalty and telling himself he'd find a way to make it right eventually. He had not, in the years since, found that way. He had simply run, same as everyone else, when the kingdom finally fractured and the portals scattered its people across worlds they'd never asked to visit.
"He probably wants me dead," Malphas said to no one, picking his noodles back up despite his lack of appetite, mostly out of habit. "Or worse. Fired. In this world, getting fired seems to carry almost as much social shame as treason did back home."
He decided, staring at his noodles, that he would find a way to make amends. Eventually. Once he figured out how to do it without causing an international incident in the CyberCore break room. He drafted, then deleted, then redrafted an opening line for a conversation he had no idea how to actually initiate, phrases ranging from formal apology to complete denial of ever having existed in the first place. None of them felt survivable. He closed the laptop, finished his noodles cold, and told himself tomorrow would somehow present a clearer path forward, a lie he was becoming increasingly skilled at telling himself.
---
Back in apartment 404, the conversation on Nexus had drifted into stranger, more personal territory as the night wore on.
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Can I tell you something slightly ridiculous?*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: My tolerance for ridiculous has been thoroughly tested this week. Go ahead.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Sometimes I still reach for a sword that isn't there. Like my hand just moves on its own, expecting weight that isn't going to be there anymore.*
Arthur sat with that for a long moment, something in the confession landing with unexpected weight.
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I do something similar. I'll reach out to summon something, out of habit, and just... nothing happens. It's a strange kind of grief, reaching for a version of yourself that no longer exists.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Nobody warns you that losing power feels a lot like losing a limb.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: No one warns you about most of this. I think that's deliberate. If people knew in advance how disorienting starting over actually feels, no one would ever attempt it.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Do you think it gets easier? The reaching for things that aren't there?*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I don't know yet. I'm hoping talking to you is a step in that direction, though I couldn't tell you why exactly.*
There was a pause on her end, long enough that Arthur wondered if he'd said too much, revealed too much of the strange, unfamiliar gratitude he felt toward a person whose face he'd never seen.
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: That might be the nicest thing anyone's said to me since I got here. And it came from someone who introduced himself as a lonely dark dragon.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: The username was available. I stand by my choices.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: You should. It's very on brand.*
They talked for another hour after that, drifting through smaller and smaller topics — favorite foods, mutual disdain for reality television, the particular indignity of doing laundry in a shared building with unreliable machines — until exhaustion finally won out over both of them, separately, on opposite sides of a wall neither one had any reason yet to suspect was thinner than it should have been.
---
The next morning, back in apartment 404, the fridge war had entered a strange new phase of détente. Arthur noticed, upon opening the fridge for his morning coffee creamer, that the tape line had returned exactly to its original position — untouched, unmoved, as though the previous day's territorial dispute had simply resolved itself overnight without either party's intervention.
He stood there for a long moment, staring at it with quiet suspicion, before Diana emerged from the bathroom, toweling her hair, entirely unbothered.
"You moved it back," he said, not quite a question.
"I did no such thing." She reached past him for her protein shake, careful this time to stay precisely on her own side, a detail that did not go unnoticed. "Maybe the fridge settled again. Fridges are emotionally complicated appliances, I told you."
Arthur studied her for a moment, unable to decide whether the small, uncharacteristic act of restraint meant anything at all, or whether he was simply looking for meaning in places that held none. Either way, something in his chest loosened slightly, an unfamiliar ease settling over what had, until recently, felt like nothing but daily combat.
"Thank you," he said, before he could stop himself, the words slipping out with more sincerity than the situation technically warranted.
Diana blinked, caught briefly off guard by the shift in his tone, before recovering with her usual deflection. "Don't get used to it. I was just too tired to fight this morning."
"Understood. I'll enjoy the ceasefire while it lasts."
"It'll last exactly as long as it takes me to get hungry enough to forget it exists." She grabbed her gym bag and headed for the door, throwing a final glance back at him from the threshold — something brief, unreadable, gone before he could properly catalog it. "See you tonight, professor."
The door closed behind her, and Arthur stood alone in the kitchen for a moment longer than necessary, coffee forgotten in his hand, an unfamiliar quiet settling over the apartment that he was slowly, almost against his will, growing accustomed to. He turned over the strange, quiet comfort of a morning that hadn't ended in an argument, and the stranger words waiting for him again that night on a screen, from someone whose name he still didn't know, whose voice he'd heard only through text, and who had somehow, in less than a week, become the person he most looked forward to talking to in this entire artificial, neon-drenched city.
He finished his coffee standing at the counter, staring at the tape line that had mysteriously restored itself overnight, and found himself smiling faintly at nothing in particular — an expression he quickly schooled back into neutrality when he caught his own reflection in the microwave door, half convinced that smiling at kitchen appliances over the state of a refrigerator was not behavior befitting either a senior developer or, more distantly, a man who had once ruled an entire plane of existence through fear and calculated cruelty.
Still, the feeling lingered as he gathered his bag and headed for the door, a small, persistent warmth that followed him down the stairwell and into the crush of the morning commute, through the packed transit car where strangers avoided eye contact with the practiced skill of people who had long ago given up expecting kindness from cities this large. He thought, somewhere between the third and fourth stop, that this was perhaps the strangest development of his exile so far — not the loss of power, not the mundane humiliation of fixing software bugs for a living, but the fact that a woman who fought him daily over refrigerator real estate had somehow become tangled, without his permission or full understanding, into the small handful of things that made this world feel survivable.
He arrived at CyberCore eleven minutes late, blamed it on the transit delays that were technically real even if they weren't the actual reason, and spent the first hour of his workday only half paying attention to a security update meeting, his mind drifting back and forth between two entirely separate versions of the same woman — one combative and exhausting in the daylight, one honest and unguarded in the dark, and the increasingly uncomfortable question of how long those two versions could remain separate in his mind before something inevitably blurred the line between them.
By early afternoon, Malphas had reappeared at the edge of his desk twice more, each time hovering with visible internal debate before losing his nerve and retreating without saying anything of substance, muttering half-formed apologies to no one in particular. Arthur noted the pattern with mild, distracted curiosity, filing it alongside every other minor oddity in a city that seemed determined to prove, on a near-daily basis, that ordinary human workplaces were exactly as strange as anything he'd encountered in Pandemonium, just with worse lighting and considerably weaker coffee.
He left the office that evening slightly earlier than usual, already composing, somewhere in the back of his mind, the opening line he intended to send once he was home and the apartment had settled into its familiar nighttime quiet — something about ghosts and coffee mugs and the strange new comfort of being known, however partially, by a stranger who still didn't know his real name, and whose real name he still didn't know either, though he had, without quite meaning to, stopped minding that fact several days ago now, more than he was entirely comfortable admitting.
