Dr. Asher Vale had learned, over the last eleven months, exactly how many minutes a silence could stretch before it became unbearable. He had learned it in exam rooms with beige walls, in the four seconds between a client's last word and their first real confession, in the hush of an office at nine at night when he was the only one left in the building, still writing notes he told himself he needed to finish before he went home.
He had not learned, until tonight, how long a silence could stretch when the entire world stopped existing around it.
One moment he was sitting at his desk, staring at a case file he had already reread six times, the cursor blinking on an unfinished sentence he could not bring himself to complete. The next moment there was no desk. No office. No cursor. Only a color that was not quite a color, pressing in from every direction, and a sound like a page being turned very, very slowly.
Then even that was gone, and he was standing in a room.
He blinked. The room did not blink back. It simply continued existing, the way ordinary things do — three chipped floorboards, a window with a crack shaped vaguely like a lightning bolt, dust motes turning slow circles in a shaft of gray light that came from nowhere in particular, since there was no visible sun.
A translucent panel unfolded in the air in front of him, the kind of interface he'd only ever seen in games his teenage clients used to talk about — the ones with health bars and inventory slots and, apparently, notifications that arrived with a soft chime regardless of whether the person receiving them was prepared to have their entire understanding of reality dismantled.
[WELCOME, SURVIVOR.] [YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR THE INFINITE LOOP.] [CLASS ASSIGNMENT IN PROGRESS...]
Asher read the words twice. He had a strange, clinical detachment about it, the same one he used when a client described something objectively alarming in a calm voice — he catalogued the information without yet letting himself feel the size of it. Selected. Survivor. Loop. These were not words that belonged in a Tuesday.
He looked down at his own hands to make sure they were still his hands. They were. Slender fingers, a faint ink stain on the side of his right index finger that never quite washed out. Still him, apparently. Just relocated.
The panel flickered, and new text bloomed across it before he could ask it any of the several hundred questions currently crowding his throat.
[CLASS ASSIGNMENT COMPLETE.] [HIDDEN CLASS UNLOCKED: NEUTRAL WAYSTATION INNKEEPER] [NOTE: THIS CLASS DOES NOT PARTICIPATE IN COMBAT, RANKING, OR TERRITORY ACQUISITION.]
He read it a third time, because surely he had misread it. Every instinct he had — belated, half-formed survival instincts that had never once been tested outside of a hospital fire drill — told him that whatever this world was, it would want fighters. Hunters. People who could kill things and not flinch afterward. He had built an entire career on being the person who helped people flinch afterward, safely, in a room with a box of tissues and a two-hour appointment slot.
And somehow, out of everything this world could have handed him, it had handed him a hotel.
"That can't be right," he said aloud, mostly to hear whether his own voice still worked. It did. It sounded steadier than he felt, which was, he supposed, the entire skill set of his old profession showing up uninvited to his new one.
The panel did not argue with him. It simply continued, patient in the specific way that only automated systems and very tired parents can be patient.
[LOCATION ASSIGNED: LIMINAL COORDINATE — DESIGNATION UNKNOWN TO CENTRAL SYSTEM.] [STRUCTURE: THE WAYSTATION (3 ROOMS, DEGRADED CONDITION)] [SPECIAL PRIVILEGE UNLOCKED: MIND SCAN] [SPECIAL PRIVILEGE UNLOCKED: DOMAIN AUTHORITY (WAYSTATION GROUNDS ONLY)]
He turned in a slow circle, taking in the room properly for the first time. Three rooms, the system had said, though standing in what he assumed was the lobby, he could only see doorways leading to two others — one hanging slightly off its hinges, the other simply gone, leaving a doorway that opened onto a room he could not yet bring himself to inspect. A reception counter sat crookedly against one wall, its varnish long since given up on itself. A fireplace, cold and empty, dominated the far wall, flanked by two armchairs that had clearly once been someone's pride and were now someone else's problem.
Outside the cracked window, there was nothing. Not darkness, exactly — darkness at least implied the eventual possibility of light. This was closer to absence. A place where the world had simply declined to finish rendering itself.
Asher exhaled slowly, a technique he'd taught to more anxious clients than he could count, and which he had apparently never once needed for himself until a night that involved being kidnapped by the concept of a video game.
*Alright,* he thought. *Let's establish what we actually know.*
He had, without meaning to, already slipped into the voice he used in his own head during difficult sessions — the neutral, observational tone that kept him from getting pulled under by whatever emotional current was in the room. It steadied him now the way it always had. Fact: he was somewhere else. Fact: he had a class, a room, and apparently privileges attached to both. Fact: whatever the Infinite Loop actually was, it did not seem to require him to hold a weapon.
He lifted his right hand, curious despite himself, and thought — with no real expectation that anything would happen — *Mind Scan.*
The world did not change so much as it clarified. A faint outline appeared, hovering just above his own chest, translucent and quietly damning.
[ASHER VALE — SANITY (SAN): 41/100] [STATUS: ELEVATED GUILT RESIDUE. CHRONIC. UNRESOLVED.] [RECOMMENDATION: REST. WARMTH. HONEST CONVERSATION.] [RECOMMENDATION DECLINED BY SUBJECT: 100% OF PREVIOUS ATTEMPTS.]
He stood very still.
He had built his entire professional identity around being the person who read this exact kind of readout in other people — the quiet architecture beneath a smile, the numbers behind a stated "I'm fine." He had never once had to see his own laid out in front of him in cold, clinical text, refusing to be argued with the way a client's denial could sometimes be gently, patiently argued with.
*Elevated guilt residue. Chronic.*
He thought, for one unguarded half-second, of a phone call he had not returned quickly enough. Of a mother's voice on the other end of it, three days after the fact, asking him — not angrily, which had somehow been worse — whether he had noticed anything. Whether there had been signs. Whether he, of all people, whose entire job was noticing, had simply not been paying close enough attention on the one night it mattered.
He had told her the truth. He had said yes, there were signs, and he had misread every one of them as improvement, because the boy had finally started smiling again, and Asher had let himself believe the smile instead of asking what was underneath it.
He had not made that mistake since. He had also, in the eleven months since, made a policy — quiet, unspoken, but absolute — of never letting himself get close enough to a client's actual pain to be wrong about it again. Warmth without entanglement. Presence without belief that he had the right to intervene in anyone's fate but his own.
The panel in front of him blinked patiently, still waiting for an acknowledgment he had not yet given it.
"No," he said finally, answering the recommendation the same way he'd have answered a client who suggested he take some time off. Politely. Firmly. Completely unmoved. "I'll manage."
The panel, to its credit, did not push the issue. It simply folded itself into a smaller icon at the edge of his vision and waited, the way good tools did, for him to actually need it again.
He turned his attention instead to the room. If there was one truth Asher trusted more than any diagnosis, it was that a body in motion recovered faster than a mind left alone with its own echo. Movement first. Feelings later, if at all.
The dust took most of the first hour. He found a broom leaning behind the reception counter, half its bristles missing, and swept the lobby floor with a thoroughness that had less to do with cleanliness and more to do with needing his hands occupied. The second room turned out to be a small kitchen, astonishingly intact given the state of everything else — a black iron stove, a pantry with three dented cans of indeterminate origin, and a single copper pot hanging from a hook, swinging faintly though there was no draft to move it.
He lingered a moment at the kitchen doorway, turning the copper pot over in his mind the way he might have turned over an odd detail in a client's story — a small thing that didn't quite fit, and was therefore probably the most important thing in the room. Its steady, faint swing troubled him more than the absence of wind should have allowed. He reached out and stilled it with two fingers. It resumed swinging the moment he let go, slow and patient, as if it had all the time in whatever this place called time.
"Fine," he murmured. "Keep your secrets."
He crouched to read the faded labels on the three dented cans in the pantry. One had lost its paper entirely, reduced to bare tin. Another read, in looping, old-fashioned script, PRESERVED PUMPKIN — SWEET, though the handwriting bore no resemblance to anything he'd have expected from a mass-produced label. It looked personal. Written by someone who had cared, once, about the particular sweetness of a particular pumpkin. He set the cans back exactly where he'd found them and did not examine that feeling either.
The third room, the one with no door, turned out to be a modest guest bedroom. A narrow bed frame with no mattress. A washstand, cracked but functional, with water that ran clear when he tested the tap — water that should not have existed in a structure floating in a location the system itself admitted it could not properly identify, and which he decided, for the sake of his own composure, not to think about too hard.
The room took longer than he expected to inspect, mostly because he made himself thorough about it — running his palm along the washstand's crack to check whether it leaked, testing the give of the floorboards near the window in case something had rotted beneath them. It was, he recognized somewhere in the back of his mind, a very particular kind of avoidance — the meticulous, productive kind that let him postpone thinking about anything larger than the task directly in front of him. He had counseled clients out of this exact behavior more times than he could count, always gently, always without judgment, because he understood precisely how comforting it was to have a task small enough to finish.
He allowed himself the hypocrisy. Just this once.
By the time he'd finished dragging the two armchairs closer to the cold hearth, his shirt had come untucked and there was a streak of gray dust along his forearm that he didn't bother to wipe away. It was, oddly, the first time in longer than he wanted to admit that his body had felt genuinely, uncomplicatedly tired — not the hollow exhaustion of sitting still with other people's grief for ten hours, but the honest ache of moving furniture and sweeping floors and being, for once, only accountable to a room.
The firewood outside the back door had been stacked in neat, deliberate rows, split logs arranged by size the way a careful hand might arrange them, kindling bundled separately in a way that suggested foresight rather than accident. He carried an armful in, telling himself it meant nothing, that plenty of abandoned buildings simply happened to have firewood, that this was not, in fact, a small and specific kindness extended to him by a building that had no obvious reason to extend kindness to anyone.
He did not entirely believe himself. He built the fire anyway, layering kindling with more patience than skill, the way his grandfather had once shown him on a camping trip decades ago, and struck the small flint he found in a drawer of the reception desk until a spark finally caught.
The flame was small at first. Then it wasn't.
Warm orange light filled the lobby for the first time, throwing long shadows across the crooked furniture, catching on the cracked window and turning the absence outside it into something merely dark, rather than something that refused to be anything at all.
Asher sat down in one of the armchairs, the springs protesting quietly beneath him, and allowed himself, for exactly one breath, to simply exist without cataloguing anything.
It did not last long. It never did.
He thought about the recommendation his own Mind Scan had offered him — rest, warmth, honest conversation — and understood, with the particular clarity that came from being both the therapist and the patient in the same moment, that the system had diagnosed him accurately and that he had no intention of following its advice for himself, even as he suspected he would spend every night from now on making sure someone else could.
There was, he thought, a word for that. He used to help people find it in themselves. He was in no hurry to find it in himself tonight.
*A hotel,* he thought instead, turning the strange fact over again. *Of all the things this world could have made me into.*
He thought about the fact that his class description explicitly forbade combat and ranking, as though the system itself understood — better than he currently understood himself — that he was not built for confrontation. He thought about the guest room with no visible reason to exist, the pantry stocked as though for someone other than himself, the firewood stacked with purpose.
*This place isn't for me,* he realized slowly. *I think it's for whoever finds it next.*
The thought settled into him with an odd, unfamiliar warmth — smaller than hope, but adjacent to it. He had spent eleven months building a professional wall specifically so that no one's pain could get close enough to become his responsibility again. And here, apparently, the universe had responded by handing him a building whose entire purpose was to invite people's pain directly through the front door.
He almost laughed. It came out closer to a breath.
There was, he noted with the same clinical part of his mind that never fully switched off, a certain dark humor in it. A man who had sworn off intervention, given custody of the one place in this entire nightmare world explicitly designed for nothing else.
He rose from the chair before the thought could go any further than it already had, and crossed to the front door — a genuine antique revolving door, absurdly formal for the building's condition, brass fittings tarnished but intact, glass panels miraculously unbroken. Beside it hung an old iron lantern, empty of oil, its glass sooted with age.
He was not entirely sure why he did what he did next. Perhaps it was simple habit — the same impulse that made him leave a porch light on for delivery drivers back home, long after he'd stopped expecting anyone to actually knock. Perhaps it was something quieter than habit, some instinct this new class had planted in him without his permission.
He found oil in the kitchen pantry, in a can that had no business surviving whatever fire had clearly gutted this building once before. He filled the lantern with careful, unhurried hands, and lit it from the hearth fire using a splinter of kindling.
The flame caught. Warm gold light spilled out through the cracked glass, casting long soft shadows across the empty threshold, out into the vast gray absence beyond the window.
For a long moment, nothing happened.
Then, somewhere in the fabric of the world outside — in whatever strange non-space this Waystation actually occupied — something shifted. It was not loud. It was not dramatic. It was closer to the feeling of a held breath being let out very slowly, as though the world itself had noticed the light and exhaled in recognition.
The revolving door, which had not moved since he'd stepped through it, gave a soft, deliberate click.
Asher looked at it for a long moment, lantern still in hand, the firelight throwing his shadow long and steady across the swept floor behind him. Somewhere beneath the calm, clinical part of his mind that had spent all evening cataloguing this place like a case file, a smaller and more honest part of him understood exactly what he had just done. He had lit a light in a window for someone he did not yet know existed, in a world that had explicitly warned him, on his very first night, that his own guilt residue was chronic and unresolved.
He thought of the mother's voice again, three days late, asking whether there had been signs. He thought of the smile he had trusted instead of questioning. He thought, distantly, that a lantern was a much safer thing to offer a stranger than a diagnosis — warmth without entanglement, presence without the terrible responsibility of believing he had the right to fix what was broken in someone else's life.
Perhaps that was the entire appeal of the class the system had handed him. A hotel did not ask its innkeeper to save anyone. It only asked him to leave the light on.
"Well," he said quietly, to no one in particular, in the voice he used for the last five minutes of any difficult session, the one meant to signal that whatever came next, they would face it together, calmly, without panic. "I suppose you'd better come in, then."
Outside, in the vast and formless dark, something had already begun making its way toward the light.
