Three weeks before the Lunara, Caen came to the Baekya Cliffs at sunset.
He had been there twice before with Mara, both times when they had come separately and found each other there, the kind of convergence that stopped feeling like coincidence after it happened often enough. This time he came intentionally, before the light changed, with something in his pocket and a thing he needed to say.
She was already there.
Of course she was. She was always there when the light was right, which was the late afternoon when the harbor went gold and the sea beyond the cliff edge was still pale enough to see the depth of it, the specific grey-blue that meant deep water rather than shallow.
She had her back to the path. She was looking at the sea.
He came and stood beside her and they looked at the sea together for a while without speaking, which was a form of conversation they had developed over several months: the comfortable silence of people who did not need to fill space with words when the space itself was doing something.
The harbor was going gold below them. The fishing fleet was coming in, the boats moving in the particular rhythm of the return, the specific quality of vessels that were done with their work for the day and moving toward rest.
He put his hand in his pocket.
"I have something for you," he said.
She turned to look at him.
He took out the pearl and held it out to her.
It was a small pearl, imperfect by palace standards, not the kind that went into official commissions or dynasty gifts. It was the kind of pearl that came up in a diver's hand when they were working the middle beds and found something worth keeping: irregular, with a particular iridescence that was not the standardized luster of the cultivated pearl but something rawer and more specific.
He had found it on the rock shelf on the day she had pulled him out of the water. He had not told her this. He had carried it since then.
"From the day you saved my life," he said. "I found it on the rock shelf when I was getting up."
She looked at the pearl in his palm. She did not take it immediately.
"That's not how pearls end up on rock shelves," she said.
"No. I don't know how it got there." He looked at it. "Maybe it was already there and I didn't notice it. Maybe it fell from somewhere. I don't know." A pause. "I know that it was there and you were there and I've been carrying it since."
She looked at him.
He said: "After the next Pearl Tide, I'm going to ask my family."
She was very still.
"About us," he said. "About what I want. About what I'm asking them to accept."
She held his gaze. Her eyes were sea-blue in the cliff light, the specific color that he had been matching to the harbor water for months, comparing them, finding each time that they were almost the same color but not quite, that her eyes had something in them the harbor water did not.
"They'll say no," she said.
"I know."
"Your father already knows," she said. "He's already made his position clear to you. You told me."
"Yes."
"Then why?"
He looked at the pearl in his hand. He had been thinking about how to answer this question for several days, because he had known she would ask it and he had wanted to have an honest answer rather than a reassuring one.
"Because I'd rather ask and be refused than not ask at all," he said. "Because not asking means accepting that it's settled, and it isn't settled for me. It's only settled for the family if I let it be."
She was quiet for a long moment.
"Caen," she said.
"I know the situation," he said. "I know what my family is. I know what the dynasty is asking. I know what's going to happen at the testimony." His voice was steady. "I know all of it and I'm asking you anyway."
"I'm not asking you to stay," she said.
"I know. I'm choosing to ask."
The sea below was moving with the evening tide, the sound of it against the cliff base very clear in the still air.
She looked at his hand with the pearl in it.
She reached out and took it.
She turned it in her fingers. The iridescence moved as she turned it, the particular quality of an imperfect natural pearl: inconsistent, warm, not trying to be anything other than what it was.
"After the next Pearl Tide," she said.
"Yes."
"You know I can't promise you anything about the Pearl Tide."
"I know."
"And you know what the testimony might mean."
"I'm going to be in Haerin Harbor," he said. "When the Lunara docks. I have a plan. I'm not asking you to depend on it because plans fail, but I'm telling you it exists."
She looked at him.
"I will be there," he said. "I'm telling you that as a fact, not as a promise. I'm going to be there."
She closed her hand around the pearl.
"Then ask your family," she said. "After the next Pearl Tide."
He looked at her closed hand.
"After the next Pearl Tide," he said.
They stood on the Baekya Cliffs while the harbor went from gold to silver to the deep blue-grey of late evening, and they did not say anything else, and neither of them needed to.
Below them the sea moved against the cliff base, patient and constant, keeping its own counsel about what was coming.
She had not expected him to do this.
She had expected, if she was honest with herself, that the conversation on the Baekya Cliffs would go differently. She had expected him to give her the practical information — the contact confirmed, the timing worked out, the plan established — and to leave the rest of what he felt carefully unspoken, in the particular way that careful people left things unspoken when the speaking required too much from them.
He was a careful person. He had been careful with everything since the beginning. He was careful with his words and his movements and his professional obligations and his family obligations and the complicated network of competing responsibilities that constituted his life.
He had not been careful just now.
She turned the pearl in her fingers and thought about this.
The pearl was irregular, warm, the specific quality of something that had been formed by an ordinary process rather than a cultivated one. It was not the kind of thing that ended up in official records or palace commissions. It was the kind of thing that stayed in a person's pocket for four months because they were carrying it.
He had been carrying it since the day she saved his life.
She thought: that is a very specific and revealing thing to have done.
She thought: I knew this. I've known this for a while. I've been being careful about knowing it.
She was nineteen.
This was the fact she kept returning to, not in a self-limiting way but in a clarifying one: she was nineteen, and she was the last full holder of the Rion navigational knowledge, and she was three weeks from a testimony invitation that she and Caen both understood was something else. She was nineteen and in the middle of a situation that had no good outcomes available, only various degrees of what she could preserve and for how long.
And she was standing on the Baekya Cliffs with a man who had just told her he intended to ask his family's permission to pursue something they had already refused, and who had said this as a statement of fact rather than a romantic gesture, which was the exact right way to say it.
She thought: the timing is terrible.
She thought: the timing has always been terrible. That is one of the structural facts of my life.
She thought: I am not going to let terrible timing prevent me from acknowledging what is true.
What was true: she had been coming to these cliffs for seven years and she had never come here with anyone except her grandmother, once, when her grandmother was showing her the wind reading, and now with Caen, several times, and the cliffs had become a different kind of place because of it. Not less hers. More complicated.
What was true: she had given him the complete navigational sequence and had not regretted it for a moment.
What was true: she looked forward to Tuesday afternoons in a way that she did not look forward to any other part of the week.
What was true: when he had said *I would rather ask and be refused than not ask at all*, she had recognized the principle because it was the same principle she had been living by for years. It was what she had been doing her whole life, standing at the edge of things she was not formally allowed inside and choosing to be present anyway.
After a while she said: "There's something I want to tell you."
He was quiet. He waited.
"I was trying to figure out the right moment to say it," she said. "And I think the right moment is probably not three weeks before everything gets difficult. But I'm going to say it anyway because not saying it is — because you just said the thing about asking rather than not asking, and that's the same principle."
He turned to look at her.
"I trust you," she said. "Not just with the sequence. With the part of me that is not connected to the sequence. With—" She paused. She was not a person who typically struggled for words, and the struggling was informative. "With what I actually am. Not the diver, not the knowledge-holder, not the person with the complicated situation. The person underneath all of that."
He was very still.
"I've trusted you with that for a while," she said. "I'm telling you now so you know."
He looked at her. The cliff light was fading and the harbor below was almost dark and his expression was the specific expression she had been learning for months: the one that appeared when he was not performing anything, when he was simply present without management.
"I know," he said.
"You know?"
"I've known for a while." He looked at the harbor. "I've been trying to figure out if I was reading it correctly or if I was seeing what I wanted to see."
"And?"
"I was reading it correctly," he said. "I'm reasonably confident of that now."
She almost smiled. "Reasonably."
"Very confident," he said. "I'm choosing conservative language for historical reasons that no longer entirely apply."
This time she did smile. The actual smile, not the controlled version. He saw it and his expression changed in the way it changed when something landed that he had not expected and had found better than expected.
"After the next Pearl Tide," she said.
"After the next Pearl Tide," he said.
They stood on the cliffs until the stars came out. Below them the harbor lights were on and the sea was dark and the navigation light at the harbor mouth was blinking its patient red signal, as it had been doing every night since before either of them was born.
Walking home along the cliff path, she turned the pearl over and over in her fingers.
She thought about the word *after*. After the next Pearl Tide. After the testimony. After whatever happened with the Lunara. After was a generous word, a word that assumed futures.
She was not certain of after. She had been trying to be clear-eyed about this, to not construct comfortable versions of the situation that were easier to inhabit than the accurate one. The accurate one was: she was going to Haerin Harbor in three weeks, and the testimony invitation was a mechanism, and the plan Caen had made was a good plan but plans failed.
The accurate one was: she had encoded the navigational sequence on the hairpin in case the contact could not be reached, because she understood that the hairpin might be the only thing that survived.
She held the pearl.
She thought: I am doing what I can do.
She thought: he is doing what he can do.
She thought: the rest belongs to the sea.
The night was clear and cold and the stars were out and the harbor was somewhere below her, doing what harbors did. She reached the village path and descended toward the lights of the houses and felt, for the first time in several weeks, something that was not urgency or preparedness but something quieter.
Gratitude, possibly. For the cliff and the pearl and the man who had come there with something he had been carrying for four months and had given it to her.
Gratitude that she had known this. That she had been here for it. That the cliffs had been the right place and the evening had been the right time and she had said the thing she had been working up to saying.
She thought: whatever happens, this happened.
She thought: the sea remembers.
She went home and held the pearl in her palm and looked at it in the lamplight and thought about after, which was a word she was going to hold onto with everything she had.
Three weeks.
She was going to do everything right and hope the after arrived.
She arrived home and lit the oil lamp and sat at the table where she did her detail work and held the pearl under the light.
It was genuinely beautiful. Not in the cultivated way, not in the way of the official palace pieces she had occasionally seen from a distance at ceremony events. In a rougher, more honest way, the way things were beautiful when they were what they were without modification.
She thought about what it meant to be given something that a person had been carrying for four months. Not a gift purchased with intent, not a gesture planned in advance. Something carried since a specific moment, held because it was connected to something that mattered, given when the moment arrived that made the giving appropriate.
She understood the language of the gesture. It was her language — the language of objects and what they carried, the language of the people who dove and surfaced and knew the difference between what had weight and what did not.
He had learned to speak it. She had been teaching him and had not realized it, and he had learned.
She set the pearl on the table and looked at it for a long time.
Then she picked up her finest tool and the hairpin and returned to the detail work.
She was finishing the secondary notation tonight. Six landmarks, four depth markers, the approach sequence — all of it, the full encoding, as precise and complete as she could make it in the tiny characters on the shaft. She had been working on it for three weeks and she was close. Tonight she was going to finish it.
She worked until the lamp was low. Her hands did not shake. They had never shaken on detail work, which was a thing her grandmother had told her was unusual and was a gift. She thanked the gift and used it.
When the notation was complete she held the hairpin under the lamp and examined each character with the magnifying lens until she was certain every one was legible to someone who knew the script and was looking for what was there.
Then she closed the lens and set the hairpin down.
She picked up the pearl and held both of them for a moment — the hairpin in one hand and the pearl in the other — and thought about after.
After the Pearl Tide. After the testimony. After whatever came between now and the harbor of some possible future.
She put the hairpin back in her hair.
She set the pearl on the small shelf above the window where the lamp light could reach it.
She went to bed.
Three weeks.
In the morning she walked to the harbor earlier than usual, before the main fishing fleet went out, while the village was still in the quiet of the pre-dawn hour.
The harbor was dark and the Pearl Tide was long past and the water had no bioluminescence, no festival quality. It was simply the harbor in its working form: functional, present, doing what it did.
She stood at the water's edge for a while.
She thought about the complete sequence she had given Caen on the cliffs. She thought about the hairpin with the secondary notation finished, the encoding complete. She thought about the contact in Haerin Harbor and the plan and the timing window.
She thought about the word after, and about the pearl on the shelf, and about a man who had been carrying a small imperfect thing for four months because it was connected to a moment that had mattered.
She thought: I have done what I can do.
She thought: it is enough. Whatever happens, what I have prepared is enough.
The harbor moved with the morning tide. Somewhere below the surface the beds were where they had always been, the deep current running through the specific geography that her grandmother had taught her to understand. The knowledge she carried was as complete as it had ever been. The encoding on the hairpin was as precise as she could make it.
She was ready.
She turned and walked back to the village and made her preparations for the day.
Three weeks until the Lunara.
She was ready.
