She went to the Baekya Cliffs on a Saturday.
Not for any professional reason. Not to clear her head, not to process something specific. She went because the cliffs were where the past timeline had been clearest to her from the beginning, and she wanted to stand there, and she went.
It was late afternoon, the specific color of November, the harbor visible from the cliff edge in the angle she had come to think of as the Mara angle: the view that took in the harbor mouth and the open sea beyond and the Pearl Tide's approach from the south.
She stood at the edge and looked.
She thought about the two weeks since she had sent the assessment to Director Han. The heritage authority processing. The review meetings. The preliminary response that had come three days ago, formal and measured, indicating that the classification decision would be announced at the Pearl Tide ceremony.
Pearl Tide was in four days.
She thought about what would happen at Pearl Tide: the formal announcement. Mara Rion's name said aloud in a public context, in the presence of the heritage authority and the museum board and the journalists who would be covering the ceremony. The official record changing.
She thought about what it had taken to get here.
She heard footsteps on the path behind her and knew, from the specific quality of them, that it was Kael.
He came and stood beside her.
She had not called him. He had not told her he was coming. She had learned, over the past months, that he sometimes simply appeared in the places she went, not because he was following her but because he had learned her geography the way she had learned his.
"Pearl Tide is in four days," she said.
"I know."
"The formal announcement."
"Yes."
She looked at the harbor. The November light on the water was flat and grey and entirely beautiful.
"I've been thinking," she said, "about what I want from that day."
He waited.
"I want to be there as myself," she said. "Not as the person who found the hairpin. Not as the conservator who completed the assessment. As Marin Yeo, who chose to do this work and did it fully." She looked at the harbor. "I've been carrying Mara and Caen with me for months. I want to put them down properly. Not abandon them — put them in the right place."
He was quiet for a moment.
"The right place is the record," he said.
"Yes. They're in the record. I put them there. That's where they belong." She looked at him. "And I want to stop checking whether we're repeating their story. I want us to be our story."
He held her gaze with the full attention.
"We are our story," he said. "We have been for a while."
She thought about the three seconds and the afternoon. The investigation and the forty minutes. The assessment written in two weeks of focused work. The harbor path and what they had said to each other beside the water.
She thought: yes.
"I know," she said. "I wanted to say it here."
"Why here?"
"Because she was here," she said. "On this cliff. With him. And I wanted to come here and look at the same view and say: I see you. I know what you did. I am going to carry it in the work, not in the relationship. The work is the record. The relationship is ours."
He was quiet.
She looked at the harbor.
"I've been afraid," she said, "of wanting what they wanted and not getting it. The timing, the outside forces, the things that were beyond their control. I've been watching us for signs of the same pattern."
"And?"
"And we're not them," she said. "We have different information. We have more time. We chose differently at the moments when they couldn't choose." She looked at him. "I am done being afraid of a pattern that was theirs. Not ours."
He looked at the harbor alongside her.
"The sea keeps things until someone is ready," he said.
"Yes." She looked at the harbor, the entrance to the bay, the cold November water. "I'm ready."
He looked at her.
She looked at him.
They were standing on the Baekya Cliffs where Mara and Caen had stood, and the harbor was below them, and the past was in the record, and they were entirely themselves.
"I want to be there with you at Pearl Tide," she said. "Not as colleagues. As—"
She paused.
He waited.
She thought about the word she wanted. She thought about precision, about saying the true thing, about not simplifying in either direction.
"As the person you're with," she said. "And as the person you are to me."
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said.
"Yes," she said.
They stood at the cliff's edge in the late afternoon light, and the harbor was entirely itself below them, and everything they had built was here.
The past was in the record.
The present was theirs.
They stayed at the cliffs until the light changed.
The November sunset was quick — the sun dropped fast at this latitude in this season, the harbor going from grey to gold to dark in the space of half an hour. She watched the transition the way she watched everything: with full attention, not hurrying it, letting it be what it was.
He watched it too.
She thought about Mara and Caen watching the harbor from this exact cliff in all the configurations it had taken over their relationship: the first time they had come here separately and found each other, the evening she had told him the navigational sequence, the night before the Lunara.
She thought: they knew this view in all its seasons.
She thought: I am beginning to know it in mine.
The harbor went dark.
Kael said: "I want to tell you something."
"Alright," she said.
"I came here once," he said. "Before you and I started working together. Before the project. Two years ago, when I was surveying the Old Port Quarter site for the first time."
She looked at him.
"I stood where we're standing and I thought: this is a specific place." He looked at the dark harbor. "Not architecturally. In the other sense. The sense of a place that has been important to people. That has weight."
"You didn't know why."
"No. I knew nothing about Mara or Caen or any of it. I just felt the weight and noted it and moved on." He paused. "I've been thinking about that since we started working. About what it means to feel the weight of something you don't yet have the words for."
She thought about the dream she had described to him early in the project: the harbor, the water, the light. The sense of something unfinished.
"The sea calls your name before you know why," she said.
"Yes."
They looked at the dark harbor.
"You felt it first," she said.
"You knew what to do with it," he said.
She thought: yes. That is exactly right.
They walked down from the cliffs in the dark, following the path by the harbor light's reflection on the water below.
She thought about what she had said: I want to put them down properly. Not abandon them — put them in the right place.
The right place was the record. The forty-seven-page assessment with the appendices and footnotes. Mara Rion's name in the opening sentence and throughout. Caen Arden's name in the *What Came After* section. The complete picture, properly placed.
They were in the record.
She was on the cliff path with Kael Arden, who had brought her his family's difficult history without flinching and who had been forty minutes late and had gone and found the evidence and who had stood here with her and said yes.
The past was in the record. The present was the path.
She thought: I am not carrying them anymore. I am carrying what I learned from them.
What she had learned: that the work you did in the dark was not less real for being done in the dark. That the message you left in the best available place could be received, even centuries later, by someone who was looking for it. That being known by someone — fully, specifically, through attention over time — was one of the forms that love took. That you could be too late once and arrive in time for the rest.
She had learned this from Mara and Caen and from her father and from the harbor and from two months of working alongside a person who had been paying the right kind of attention.
She thought: that is what I carry.
She thought: it is enough.
At the bottom of the cliff path, where the harbor walk began, she stopped.
Kael stopped beside her.
She looked at the harbor — the lights of the working waterfront, the navigation buoy at the channel entrance, the dark expanse of the bay beyond.
In four days the Pearl Tide would come. The bioluminescent surge that came every year, the harbor going silver-blue in the dark, the lanterns and the festival and the formal ceremony where Mara Rion's name would be said aloud by the heritage authority official in the presence of the museum board and the journalists.
She thought: she has been waiting for this.
She thought: so have I.
"I want to see the Pearl Tide from here," she said. "From the harbor path. Not from inside the formal grounds."
He looked at her.
"Like they did," she said. "From the edge. But differently — not because we're not allowed inside. Because the edge is where the lanterns hit the water and you can see them do it."
He was quiet for a moment.
"Alright," he said. "We'll be at the edge."
She looked at the harbor.
She thought about Mara dancing on the harbor path, in the dark, with the Pearl Tide lanterns going out behind her. Not excluded. Choosing the angle that showed her the most.
She thought: I choose this angle.
She thought: I am exactly where I'm supposed to be.
"Come on," she said. "I want to walk."
He fell into step beside her.
They walked the harbor path in the dark, and the November air was cold and salt and entirely itself, and Pearl Tide was four days away, and everything was ready.
Over the next four days she finished the small pieces of the assessment that needed finishing — the final cross-referencing, the bibliography, the metadata for the heritage authority's formal submission.
Kael worked on his family's supplementary documentation, the additional materials from the tertiary archive that he was adding as a voluntary contribution to the public record. He had told her, the day after the Baekya Cliffs, that he wanted to add a section that was not strictly required by the assessment process: a personal statement from the current Arden family acknowledging what the historical record showed.
She had said: I think that matters.
He had said: I know it doesn't undo it. But it puts the acknowledgment in the same record as the fact.
She had thought: exactly.
She had thought about Caen, who had put the truth in the box in the Cliff House and updated the record for decades. The gesture of keeping the truth available, of refusing to let the convenient version be the only version.
Kael was doing the same thing, three centuries later, in a different form.
She thought: this is how patterns change. Not by erasing what happened. By putting the acknowledgment alongside the fact, in the same record, until the acknowledgment is part of the story.
The assessment went to the heritage authority on a Wednesday.
Pearl Tide was Saturday.
Three days.
She spent the three days working on a new project that had been sitting in her inbox since early in the assessment period: a Bronze Age maritime artifact from a site up the coast, completely unrelated to Jinju Dynasty, completely unrelated to everything she had been immersed in for months.
She worked on it with the specific pleasure of new material. Different material, different period, different questions. The same practice: looking at what was present, reading what the evidence offered, letting the object be what it was.
She was good at this.
She was going to keep being good at it.
On Friday evening, the night before Pearl Tide, she went to the conservation room.
Not to work. To be with the hairpin one more time before it went into the permanent collection after the ceremony.
She unsealed the storage container. She looked at the hairpin under the examination lamp.
The wave motif. The mother-of-pearl. The Rion Script on the shaft, the secondary notation, all of it visible and clear and real.
*Mara Rion.*
She thought about everything she had learned from this object and from the person who had made it. The patience, the precision, the specific courage of doing the work in the dark when you did not know if anyone would be ready.
She thought: you were right to put it here.
She thought: I was ready.
She sealed the container carefully, with the specific thoroughness she brought to everything that required careful handling.
She labeled it with the updated documentation: *Mara Rion, Pearl Diver, Rion Household, Haerin Shoal. Protector of the Jinju-sim. This object is the navigational record of the Rion family's pearl diving routes, encoded by Mara Rion prior to her death aboard the Lunara, and recovered from the Lunara wreck site.*
She looked at the label.
She thought: her name is right there.
She thought: tomorrow it will be in the formal announcement.
She thought: she will have been real, officially, completely, for the first time in eight hundred years.
She turned off the examination lamp.
She walked home through the harbor streets.
The Pearl Tide was beginning: the water was already starting to show the first faint traces of bioluminescence at the harbor edges, the specific blue-silver that came once a year and was entirely unrepeatable.
She stopped at the corner and looked at it.
She thought: tomorrow.
She went home.
Kael called her that night.
Not about anything specific. He said: "Are you ready for tomorrow?"
She thought about the question.
"Yes," she said. "I'm ready."
"How does it feel?"
She thought about this too. She was in the habit of precision and this deserved precision.
"Like something that has been held a long time is about to be received," she said. "Not only by me — by the record, by the ceremony, by everyone who will hear her name tomorrow. Received completely, the way something is received when the right person finds it at the right time."
"Yes," he said.
"And for me personally," she said, "it feels like completing something. The work is done. The truth is in the record. What comes next is—" She paused. "Different. New. Ours."
He was quiet for a moment.
"I'll meet you at the harbor path before the ceremony," he said. "The edge, like you said."
"The edge," she said. "Yes."
She put the phone down and looked at the harbor through the kitchen window.
The bioluminescence was stronger now — the Pearl Tide building toward its peak, the harbor edge glowing with the specific cold light that came from millions of organisms responding to the water temperature and the current and whatever other signal triggered the annual event. It happened every year and was always incomprehensible: this amount of light, from things too small to see, turning the harbor into something out of a different kind of world.
She thought about Mara, who had grown up with this every year, who had danced at the festival's edge with this light behind her, who had written the navigational sequence with this light in the harbor below.
She thought: she knew this harbor in all its seasons.
She thought: so do I.
She thought: tomorrow.
She went to bed and slept well, and in the morning it was Pearl Tide.
In the morning she dressed carefully — not formally, but with intention, the specific quality of choosing what to wear for a day that was going to matter.
She walked to the harbor before the ceremony.
Kael was already there, at the path, looking at the water. The Pearl Tide was at its full peak: the harbor silver-blue from the navigation buoy to the horizon, the quality of the light unlike anything else in the year.
She came and stood beside him.
They looked at the Pearl Tide together.
She thought about every person who had stood here at this harbor in this light: the diving families, the merchants, the officials, the ordinary citizens of every iteration of Somar Bay going back centuries. Mara and Caen, eight hundred years ago, at the edge of a festival that was different then and the same now in the essential thing: the harbor, the light, the specific annual miracle of bioluminescence.
She thought: all of us standing here.
She thought: all of us watching the same water.
"She stood here," Marin said.
"Yes," Kael said.
"And now we do."
"Yes."
She thought about the inscription on the compartment wall. The name and the message. Eight hundred years waiting, received on a Thursday afternoon under an examination lamp in a museum conservation room.
She thought: received.
She thought: I am going to say her name in a few hours. Clearly. In public. With the heritage authority and the museum board and the journalists and the ordinary citizens of Somar Bay as witnesses.
She thought: you have been waiting a long time.
The Pearl Tide moved with the harbor current, the bioluminescence shifting and reforming, the light always a little different from what it had been a moment before.
She thought: ready.
She looked at Kael.
He looked at her.
She thought: us.
"Come on," she said. "The ceremony starts in an hour."
He offered her his hand.
She took it.
They walked toward the ceremony together, and the Pearl Tide light was on the water, and everything was ready.
