The call came on a Tuesday morning in late October, three weeks before the Pearl Tide ceremony.
Marin was at her desk reviewing the assessment draft when her phone rang with an unfamiliar number — a regional prefix she did not recognize. She almost let it go to voicemail. She answered on the third ring.
The caller was a freelance marine researcher named Bae who worked the Haerin Shoal approaches for a coastal monitoring nonprofit. He had been tracking something anomalous in the Lunara site area for several weeks and had found her contact through the museum's public research database.
He described what he had found: a device emitting a low-frequency signal from the harbor floor, approximately forty meters below the surface, in the northeastern section of the Lunara wreck site. The signal was irregular — not a current beacon, not emergency equipment, not any standard maritime locator. It had the encoding characteristics of an older proprietary model, the kind that had been used by researchers in the early 2000s.
He gave her the signal's frequency band.
She recognized it before he finished.
She had grown up hearing about her father's equipment with the same casual intimacy that people grew up hearing about a parent's professional tools: the models he preferred, the brands he trusted, the specific combination of reliability and price point that had characterized his approach to research equipment. The frequency band the caller described was characteristic of the model her father had used in the final years of his active research.
She asked the caller to give her the full coordinates.
She wrote them down.
She sat with the coordinates after the call ended.
Forty meters below the surface. In the northeastern section of the Lunara site. Her father had been working the northeastern section in his final dive, according to the footage she had reviewed from his recovery camera.
She thought: his equipment has been down there since he disappeared.
She thought: something turned it on.
She thought: or something was always on and nobody found the frequency until now.
She called Kael.
"I need to go to the Lunara," she said when he answered. "Today. Tonight. Now."
"What happened?"
She told him.
He was quiet for a moment.
"Forty meters," he said.
"Yes."
"That's within our equipment range."
"Yes. I can be at the dive supply in an hour. Can you—"
"I'll meet you there," he said.
She looked at the coordinates on her notepad.
She thought about her father, going down for what turned out to be the last time, with the camera and the tracker and the careful methodology that had characterized twelve years of work.
She thought: he found it.
She thought: he found the compartment and whatever was inside it, and then something happened, and he did not come back up.
She thought: I am going to go down there.
She thought: and I am not going to come back up without what he found.
She put on her jacket.
She was out the door in five minutes.
The dive supply shop was a twenty-minute drive from the museum. She used the time to call Yun, the dive team lead who had handled the previous Lunara dives, who answered immediately and said she could have a three-person team ready by two o'clock.
She said: I'll be there at one.
She drove through the harbor district thinking about the frequency band and the coordinates and the specific quality of a device that had been sending its signal from the harbor floor for fifteen years, undetected, waiting for someone to tune to the right frequency.
She thought: the sea keeps things.
She thought: until someone is ready.
She thought: I'm ready.
Kael was at the dive supply shop when she arrived.
He looked at her with the expression she had come to read as his baseline when something serious was in front of them: fully present, not dramatizing, simply there.
"The coordinates are forty meters in the northeastern section," she said. "The footage from his camera shows he was in that area. He found something. His tracker has been sending signal for fifteen years."
"Something activated it," Kael said.
"Or it's been active the whole time and nobody was looking at the right frequency until now."
He thought about this. "Or the recent dive activity disturbed the sediment and changed the signal propagation."
She had not thought of this. It was exactly the kind of thing he would think of.
"Yes," she said. "That's possible too."
They went inside to arrange the equipment.
She thought about her father's handwriting in the notebooks, urgent and terse. She thought about the footage that had cut off before he reached whatever was in the compartment.
She thought: I am going to finish his dive.
The equipment prep took two hours.
Yun's team was professional and thorough, checking and rechecking with the systematic attention of people who understood that the difference between a good dive and a bad dive was usually the quality of the preparation. Marin worked through the checklist alongside them, her hands steady, her mind already at the bottom.
Kael watched the prep without being in the way of it. She had noted this quality in him from the beginning of their work together: he understood the architecture of expertise, knew when to step back and let the people with specific skills operate without his assistance. He did not need to be useful in every moment to justify his presence.
At one-thirty she put on her drysuit.
She ran through her personal pre-dive protocol: equipment check, breathing pattern, review of the coordinates and the target depth. She did this with the focused attention that pre-dive work required, the specific narrowing that happened when she was about to go under.
Kael came to stand beside her.
"Your father went down here before," he said.
"Yes."
"What did he find?"
She looked at the harbor, the northeastern section visible from the dock. "He found the compartment. He had footage of the approach and a partial description of what he saw inside. Then the footage cut off."
"What happened to him?"
She had thought about this for fifteen years. She had no definitive answer.
"I don't know," she said. "Equipment failure. A condition in the compartment. Something in the sediment disturbance." She looked at the water. "I've never let myself not know."
He looked at her.
"You've been carrying the not knowing," he said.
"Yes."
"Today you're going to find out."
"Yes," she said. "Or I'm going to find the next piece of what happened. And then the next." She looked at him. "He did his job. He found the truth. Whatever happened to him after that — I'm not going to assume the worst without evidence."
"No," he said. "Assume what the evidence actually shows."
"Yes," she said. "That's the practice."
She pulled her mask down.
She walked to the entry point.
The descent was familiar.
She had made this descent several times now — the specific geometry of the Lunara wreck site, the way the hull appeared out of the murk at about twenty-five meters, the northeastern section where her father had last been working. She knew the approach the way she knew other things she had practiced: through repetition until the body remembered without needing to be told.
At thirty meters she found the signal.
Not a sound — sound transmission was not the mechanism — but a response from the frequency detector Yun had fitted to her equipment. The device was picking up the signal. She was getting warmer.
She followed the signal indicator.
At thirty-eight meters, in a section of the hull she had not previously examined, she found the device.
Her father's tracker, still attached to its mounting bracket, still emitting.
It was partially buried in sediment, but the upper section was visible: the model she remembered from his equipment cases, the one he had used in his final years of research. The device that had been down here since the last time he dove.
She floated in front of it for a moment.
She thought: you sent this signal for fifteen years.
She thought: and now I am here.
The tracker was attached to a mounting bracket. The mounting bracket was attached to what appeared to be a section of the hull that had been examined carefully — she could see the marks of methodical survey work around it, the specific traces of someone who had spent a long time in this section.
Her father had been here. Right here. He had mounted his tracker because he planned to return. He had been examining this section of the hull.
She looked at what the section showed.
The sediment here was disturbed — recently, or relatively recently, which in marine archaeology terms could mean anything from the past few decades. The disturbance pattern was consistent with what she had seen in the footage: her father had been excavating this section carefully, removing sediment layer by layer.
Below the disturbance, partially re-covered by subsequent drift, she could see the edge of something.
A hatch.
A sealed hatch in the hull, below the section her father had been working.
Not the compartment she had found during the primary survey. A second compartment. Deeper in the hull.
She thought: this is what he found.
She signaled to Yun: I've found something. Come see this.
They surfaced at four-thirty.
Kael was at the dock.
She pulled off her mask and looked at him.
"He found a second compartment," she said. "Below the one we've been working with. His tracker was mounted at the entry point. He was there."
Kael held her gaze.
"The second compartment," he said.
"Yes. Sealed. I could see the edge of the hatch. The sediment disturbance pattern is consistent with recent examination — recent in marine archaeology terms, which means the past several decades. He was there."
"Did you open it?"
"No. I documented the location and the condition and I came up. We don't open anything without the full protocol."
"But you know what's in it."
She thought about her father's footage, the calm voice, the specific words: *The Jinju-sim is here. She hid it. She protected it to the end.*
"Yes," she said. "I know what's in it."
Kael looked at the harbor.
"The dive was his last," he said. "Whatever happened — he found it."
"He found it," she said.
She thought about that: the specific quality of knowing something that had been unknown for fifteen years. Her father had found the truth. He had died knowing the truth. Whatever had happened in that compartment had not unmade what he had found.
She felt something shift.
Not the grief — the grief was its own entity and it had its own timeline. Something else: the specific quality of a years-long not-knowing becoming a knowing, the shape of the incomplete becoming complete.
She thought: he was right.
She thought: he was completely right and he knew it before he died.
She thought: that is not nothing.
She thought: that is actually everything.
She sat down on the dock edge and looked at the harbor.
Kael sat beside her.
Neither of them said anything.
The harbor was entirely itself in the late afternoon light, and the second compartment was down there, and the Jinju-sim was in it, and her father had found it, and she was going to open the hatch and bring it up, and everything was going to be in the record.
Everything.
Her father had been right.
She had always known he was right.
Now she knew it the way you knew things when the evidence was complete: absolutely, without remainder.
She sat on the dock until the harbor went golden in the late afternoon light.
Kael sat beside her. He did not push, did not prompt, did not fill the silence with anything. He was there, which was the thing that was needed, and he understood it was the thing that was needed.
She thought about her father sitting in some equivalent place, at the end of some equivalent dive, knowing something he had spent twelve years trying to know. She thought about what that felt like: the arrival, after long searching, at the thing that had been there all along.
She thought: he sat with it too.
She thought: he felt what I'm feeling now.
She thought: we are the same, in this.
Eventually she said: "He was right about all of it."
"Yes," Kael said.
"From the beginning. The hull breach, the navigational record, the conspiracy, Mara's innocence. He had it all."
"Yes."
"He died knowing he was right."
"Yes."
She looked at the harbor.
"That matters," she said.
"Yes."
"It doesn't bring him back. But it matters."
"Yes," he said. "I know."
She sat with this for a while.
Then she said: "The second dive. The full protocol. Yun's team, proper documentation, heritage authority observer. We do it right."
"When?"
She thought about the Pearl Tide ceremony. The timing of it.
"Two weeks," she said. "After the ceremony. After the formal announcement. In the right order."
"The record is established first," he said.
"Yes. And then the object comes up."
He nodded.
"Alright," he said. "Two weeks."
She stood up.
She looked at the harbor one more time.
She thought: he found it.
She thought: and so did I.
She thought: we both did.
She walked back to the car.
Two weeks to Pearl Tide.
Two weeks to the second dive.
Everything in the right order.
That evening she went home and sat at the kitchen window and thought about her father.
Not with the grief that had characterized most of her thinking about him for fifteen years. With something else, something that was not opposed to grief but was a different layer of it: understanding.
He had been a methodical person who loved the harbor and had spent twelve years following a truth that the official record was designed to obscure. He had done this at personal cost — the professional risks, the institutional skepticism, the years of working in a field where the question he was asking was not considered legitimate.
He had found the answer.
He had been in the compartment, alone, at the bottom of the harbor, knowing that he had been right. And then something had happened that had prevented him from bringing the answer back up.
She had been angry at the sea for a long time. For taking him. For keeping what he had found, unreachable, for fifteen years.
She was still not done with that anger. It was not gone.
But she understood, sitting at the window with the harbor dark below, what her father had understood: the sea keeps things until someone is ready.
He had been ready. He had found it. What the sea had kept was the final piece — his camera, his tracker, the evidence of his arrival at the compartment — and it had kept it until she was ready.
Until she had the assessment and the hairpin decoded and the full picture assembled and the name ready to say aloud.
Until she had the complete context to understand what she was going to find.
She thought: you sent me here, and then the sea made me ready before it let me find you.
She thought: that is a kind of patience I can barely understand.
She thought: but I understand it.
She looked at the harbor for a long time.
Then she went to bed.
She thought about Pearl Tide and the ceremony and what came after.
She thought: I am going to bring up what you found.
She thought: I am going to finish the dive.
In the morning she updated the assessment with the new discovery.
Not the full account — that would come after the second dive, when she had the Jinju-sim in hand and the documentation complete. But the preliminary note: a second compartment had been located in the Lunara's northeastern hull section, consistent with her father's final footage. Preliminary survey indicated the compartment was sealed and intact. The heritage authority had been notified. A formal opening dive was scheduled.
She sent the update to Director Han.
She sent a message to Kael: *Added the preliminary note. Heritage authority notified. Two weeks after Pearl Tide for the formal dive.*
He replied: *Correct order. Good.*
She looked at the update on her screen for a moment.
She thought: my father's work is in the formal record now.
She thought: not just his conclusion. His presence. The tracker, the mounting bracket, the evidence that he was there.
She thought: he is in the record.
She thought: both of them are. Mara and her father. Both of them doing what they could with what they had, in the dark, without knowing if anyone would find it.
She thought: I found it.
She thought: I am going to finish it.
She thought about Pearl Tide, two weeks away, and what she was going to say at the ceremony.
She thought about the name she was going to say.
She thought: ready.
She picked up her pen.
She got to work.
The next two weeks she worked with a focus that was different from the previous months: not the urgency of assembling incomplete evidence, but the deliberate thoroughness of someone preparing to complete something.
The assessment was done. The formal ceremony preparation was done. The diver coordination and heritage authority notification for the second dive was done.
What remained was the space between the ceremony and the dive: two weeks of knowing that everything was in place and waiting for the right moment.
She used the time on the Bronze Age artifact, which was completely separate from everything she had been immersed in and which she worked on with the specific pleasure of new questions after a long period of focused questions.
Kael used the time finishing the supplementary documentation and a new project brief he was developing: a proposal to the heritage authority for an underwater conservation center at the Lunara site. Not development, not commercial, not the project that had started this whole process. Something different: a permanent research station for the continued study of the site and the Jinju Dynasty maritime history that surrounded it.
He showed her the brief.
She read it.
She said: "You're not leaving."
"No," he said. "I'm not leaving."
She looked at the brief.
She thought: this is the house on the table. Two kinds of knowledge combined into something neither could build alone.
She thought: we are building it.
She looked at him.
He looked at her.
"Pearl Tide is in ten days," she said.
"I know," he said.
"And then the dive."
"And then the dive," he said.
"And then—"
"And then," he said.
They both looked at the harbor.
She thought: after.
She thought: now.
She thought: yes.
You've reached the end of this chapter
