The first thing he noticed was the ceiling.
It was too high. Coffered dark wood, lacquered to a mirror shine, with a single paper lantern hanging dead center — the kind of lantern that cost more than three months of his old apartment's rent. Morning light crept in from somewhere to his left, thin and grey, casting long shadows across a room that was definitely, absolutely, catastrophically not his.
He sat up slowly.
The bed alone was larger than his old living room. Black lacquered frame, silk sheets in deep charcoal, four pillows arranged with military precision. To his right, a low table held a lacquered tray — green tea, still steaming, placed there by someone who had been in this room while he slept. To his left, floor-to-ceiling shoji screens filtered the morning light into something pale and diffuse. Beyond them, the vague shapes of a garden.
He swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stood.
His center of gravity was wrong. Too high. His arms were longer. His hands — he stared at them for a long moment — the knuckles were scarred in a way his had never been, small white lines crossing the skin like old fault lines.
He already knew, of course. He had known the moment he opened his eyes. The ceiling had told him everything.
But knowing and seeing were two different things.
He found the mirror on the far wall — full-length, framed in black iron — and walked toward it with the careful, measured steps of a man approaching something he was not sure he wanted to confirm.
The face that looked back at him was not his.
It was sharp in a way that his had never been. High cheekbones. A jaw that could cut glass. Dark hair that fell across a forehead in a way that probably cost someone a great deal of careful styling to achieve that precise appearance of carelessness. And the eyes — pale blue-grey, the color of a winter sky ten minutes before a storm — currently staring back at him with an expression of profound, existential devastation.
He pressed one hand flat against the mirror.
The reflection pressed back.
"Right," he said, to no one in particular. His voice came out lower than he expected, with a natural roughness that turned even that single syllable into something that probably made lesser men flinch. "Right. Okay. So that's happening."
---
His name — his new name — was Kurogane Tōma.
Heir to the Kurogane-kai. Eldest son of Kurogane Daigo, whose name alone was enough to make regional police chiefs check their retirement plans. The most powerful Yakuza family in the country, built over three generations on a combination of ruthlessness, strategic marriages, and a particular talent for making problems disappear before they became inconvenient.
And the designated villain of *Love's Labyrinth* — a dating sim that had consumed approximately eight hundred hours of his previous life.
He sat back down on the edge of the bed. The silk sheets made a soft sound under his weight. Outside, a bird called once and went quiet.
The memories came in waves, the way they do in those first disoriented minutes after waking — not in order, not cleanly, but in fragments that assembled themselves into something coherent if he held still long enough. His own memories: an ordinary university life, deadlines and convenience store dinners and the particular guilty pleasure of a well-optimized dating sim route. And underneath them, like a second layer of sediment, the memories that belonged to this body: the weight of expectation, the smell of his father's study, the particular texture of the rug in the main hall.
He knew this house. He knew the number of steps from this room to the front gate. He knew which floorboard creaked third from the left in the east corridor, and he knew it because — he checked the fragment, turned it over carefully — because Tōma-original had once used that knowledge to sneak up on a servant who he suspected of disloyalty.
He put that memory down like a piece of broken glass and did not pick it up again.
Instead, he reached for the low table beside the bed, picked up the tea — it was perfect, of course, the temperature of something prepared by someone who had done it ten thousand times — and took a slow sip while he ran the inventory.
*Love's Labyrinth.* Four heroines. A school setting. A story that could end in happiness or catastrophe depending entirely on the choices made.
And Kurogane Tōma — the character he now wore like an ill-fitting suit — had exactly zero good endings. He was the obstacle. The shadow that fell across the protagonist's path. The one who threatened, manipulated, and when the player made the wrong choices, the one who destroyed everything.
He had played this game one hundred and twelve times. He had seen every ending.
He set down the tea, stood, crossed to the low writing desk in the corner, and found paper and a brush.
He sat down and began to write.
---
*Things That Will Kill Me.*
He titled the list with the clinical detachment of someone writing a grocery inventory.
*1. The school arc.*
He remembered it clearly. Seiran Academy, where all four heroines were enrolled, where the protagonist — some pleasant, unremarkable boy named Fujishiro Ren who had the narrative luck of a man born under a very specific star — would navigate his first year while Tōma made his life difficult. In the bad endings, Tōma escalated from threatening to actively harmful. Expelled, arrested, or worse, depending on the route.
He was not going to let that happen.
*2. The succession arc.*
Kurogane Daigo had two sons. Tōma was the elder, the official heir. But there was Ryūsei — the younger, the sharper, the one who wanted the throne with a hunger that had no bottom. In the game, Ryūsei had been a background element, a rumble of thunder that never quite broke into a storm within the story's timeframe. But in this body's memories, Ryūsei was present and alive and watching.
He underlined this one.
*3. The heroines.*
He set down the brush for a moment.
This was the most complex category. In the game, the heroines were attached to death flags the way flowers were attached to stems — naturally, inevitably, because that was simply how they grew. Amamiya Yuki, the true route heroine, had the worst of it: in the bad ending, Tōma's interference shattered her quietly. Saionji Karen, the student council president, could be maneuvered into a scandal that ended her future. Hoshino Mio, who fought back, ended up in a confrontation that the game's writers had apparently considered dramatically satisfying but which he, personally, found disturbing on reflection. And Yukimura Ayane — quiet Ayane, who drew everything she saw — whose bad ending he had always skipped past quickly, because it was the one that sat with him longest afterward.
He would not be triggering any of those.
The strategy, as he had worked it out in the ten minutes between waking and sitting down with this paper, was straightforward in theory and probably nightmarish in practice: be so thoroughly, consistently terrifying that none of them would come near him. Not threatening — he had no intention of actually harming anyone. But frightening. The kind of presence that made people choose a different hallway, a different lunch table, a different life.
He picked up the brush again.
*3. The heroines — approach: complete avoidance. Make them afraid. Keep them away. Do not engage. Do not help. Do not, under any circumstances, feel sorry for them.*
He looked at the last line for a moment.
Then he capped the ink and set the brush down.
---
The knock at the door was precise. Three beats, evenly spaced, the kind of knock that communicated *I am announcing my presence* rather than *I am requesting entry* — a distinction that said a great deal about the knocker's understanding of the hierarchy.
"Come in," he said.
The door slid open. Kanzaki Suzu stepped inside.
She was — he ran the comparison against the sprite in his memory — accurate. Dark hair pulled back with ruthless efficiency. The Kurogane household uniform, worn like armor. The posture of someone who had been trained to stand straight before she had been trained to read. She was perhaps seventeen, perhaps eighteen, and she carried herself with the particular stillness of someone who had long ago decided that composure was the only form of safety available to them.
She stood three steps inside the door, back straight, eyes at a middle distance.
"Good morning, Young Master," she said. "Your bath is prepared. The household staff requests a timeframe for your morning schedule. Kurogane-sama has requested your presence in the study at nine o'clock." She paused one beat. "Breakfast will be served whenever you are ready."
He looked at her.
In the game — in the fragments of memory that belonged to this body — Tōma-original had treated Suzu with the casual indifference of someone who did not consider the furniture worth addressing. Not cruel, not specifically. Just absent. As though she were part of the house rather than a person in it.
He had an impulse — clear and simple and dangerous — to say *thank you.*
He suppressed it, because Tōma-original did not say thank you, and because he was acutely aware that any deviation from established behavioral patterns before he understood the full landscape of this situation was a liability he could not afford.
Instead, he said nothing for a moment, which was apparently its own language in this household — Suzu's posture shifted, almost imperceptibly, into something that read as *waiting*.
"Nine o'clock," he said finally, making it flat and uninflected.
"Yes, Young Master."
"Fine."
She bowed and retreated. The door slid shut behind her with a soft precision that matched everything else about her.
He sat for a moment in the quiet she left behind.
Then he added a fourth item to his list.
*4. Father — observing at all times. Do not deviate from established character before mapping full threat landscape.*
He underlined *do not deviate* twice.
---
The study smelled like old paper and authority.
He had made the walk in exactly the time memory told him it should take — not faster, not slower, because pace communicated things to people who were watching, and in this house someone was always watching. Bōzu and Hige had peeled away at the study door with a synchronized bow, taking up positions in the corridor outside like a pair of very large, very devoted brackets.
Kurogane Daigo did not look up when Tōma entered. He was reading something — papers spread across the desk with the organized chaos of a man who knew exactly where everything was — and the act of not looking up was not rudeness but rather a statement: *I will acknowledge you when I am ready to acknowledge you, and not before.*
Tōma stood. He waited.
This, at least, was something he could do. Waiting required no performance, no calibration of tone. It was simply a matter of keeping his face in the expression this body wore naturally — the one that looked, in the mirror, like someone who had considered various options and found them all slightly beneath his notice — and standing still in the particular way that memory told him Tōma-original had stood: weight even, shoulders back, the unconscious posture of someone who had never been taught to make himself smaller.
The room was large, dark-paneled, lined with shelves that held things other than books — small objects, a few framed photographs, several items he suspected were not decorative. Morning light came in from a single high window. Two men stood near the far wall — Bōzu and Hige, the pair of mid-ranked enforcers who had apparently been assigned as Tōma's shadow throughout his school years. In the game they were comedy relief, the kind of side characters who existed to make the protagonist look competent by comparison. In person they were large, loyal, and currently looking at him with an expression of such earnest reverence that he found it mildly alarming.
Daigo set down his papers.
He looked up.
Tōma had prepared himself for this. He had spent the walk from his room to the study running the comparison — memory of the game, memory of this body, everything he knew about how Kurogane Daigo operated. The man was not irrational. He was not cruel for cruelty's sake. He was simply a person who had built something very large and very specific and had devoted forty years to ensuring it continued, and that devotion had removed from his operating vocabulary any concept of *want* that was not in service of that goal.
"Sit down," Daigo said.
Tōma sat.
The chair was hard and straight-backed in a way that was either very old or very deliberate. Daigo looked at him for a moment with eyes that were the same pale grey as the mirror's reflection, and Tōma understood, with a clarity that went beyond the game's narrative, that this man did not miss things.
"Seiran Academy," Daigo said. "Your first term begins next week."
"Yes," Tōma said.
"You've been informed of what's expected."
It was not a question. Tōma treated it as one anyway, because treating it as a statement would require him to confirm expectations he was not entirely sure he had correctly mapped from fragmentary memories.
"You want a presence there," he said. "The school is useful to the family."
Daigo's eyes didn't change. "The school connects to half the next generation of people who will matter in this city. Yes. It is useful." He paused. "What I want to know is what *you* intend to do with that usefulness."
There it was.
The test. He had felt it coming since Suzu had given him the schedule, the particular gravity of a conversation that was shaped like small talk but weighted like a formal examination. What would Tōma-original have said? Something that demonstrated appetite. Something that showed the particular quality of ambition Daigo had been cultivating in his heir.
Tōma looked at his father's face and made a calculation.
He could not afford to answer incorrectly. He also could not afford to answer in a way that committed him to actions he had no intention of taking.
"Observe," he said. "Understand who's worth knowing and who isn't. Identify what the school has that's useful to us." He let a beat pass, then added with the careful flatness of someone who was not quite making a threat: "I don't plan to make noise before I know the landscape."
Silence.
Daigo looked at him for three seconds that felt considerably longer.
Then he nodded, once, and returned to his papers.
"Good," he said, in the tone of someone who had received an acceptable answer and was now finished with the conversation.
Tōma rose, inclined his head slightly — the exact degree that memory told him was appropriate — and left the study without another word.
In the corridor outside, Bōzu and Hige fell into step behind him with the synchronized inevitability of very large, very devoted shadows.
He walked back to his room. He sat down by the window. He looked out at the garden — arranged with the precise control of something that had been tended for a very long time — and felt the full weight of where he was settle into his chest like cold water.
A household of over sixty people. A father with eyes that measured everything. A rival he hadn't met yet. And a school full of death flags with names and faces he could remember down to their voice lines.
The strange part — the part he hadn't fully accounted for, sitting in his old apartment clicking through menus — was how *physical* it all was. The memories of this body didn't come as data. They came as sensation: the particular resistance of the study's chair under his weight, the smell of his father's room, the way the morning light fell through shoji screens and turned everything gold and grey. The scarred knuckles on his hands. The low, unfamiliar register of his own voice.
He had played Tōma as an obstacle, a presence to be routed around or dismantled. It had not occurred to him, in any of those one hundred and twelve playthroughs, that the obstacle might be tired.
He looked at his hands for a moment.
Then he picked up the brush and added a note beneath item four.
*Acceptable performance. Temporary. Will not hold indefinitely.*
He sat with that for a while.
Then Suzu knocked — precise, three beats — and entered with a sealed envelope.
"From Kurogane-sama," she said. "Background material on the incoming first-year cohort at Seiran Academy. He had it prepared this morning."
She set it on the desk, bowed, and left.
He looked at the envelope for a long moment. Then he picked it up and opened it.
The papers inside were organized by social standing, then academic rank, then — he recognized the hand of someone who understood information as a resource — by degree of connection to families the Kurogane-kai considered relevant.
The first page had a photograph clipped to the corner.
A girl with dark hair and eyes that were, even in a small identification photo, notable for a quality of quiet attentiveness — the look of someone who was not simply seeing whatever was in front of them but actually, carefully watching it.
*Amamiya Yuki. Academic scholarship recipient. First year, Class 1-A.*
Below that, in his father's handwriting, a single annotation: *Fujishiro Ren's known associate. Monitor.*
He read the annotation twice.
She was already in the file. Already flagged. Already, in Daigo's careful architecture of useful information, a piece on a board he was being invited to play.
He set the paper down.
He looked out the window at the garden, at the stone lantern in the corner that had probably stood there longer than he had been alive in either of his lives, at the raked gravel that someone maintained with daily, patient attention.
*I have to make her afraid of me.*
The thought arrived with the clarity of something he had decided, and also with a weight that surprised him — sitting heavier than it should have, heavier than a strategic decision had any business sitting.
He folded the envelope, tucked it into the desk drawer, and stood.
Outside, the garden held its careful stillness.
He had one week.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The first thing he noticed was the ceiling.
