Friday morning arrived the way days with plans arrived — with the particular quality of light that suggested the world had no idea what was scheduled for that afternoon and was going to proceed normally regardless.
Tōma checked the notebook at five-forty. Three entries, three checkmarks. He closed it.
Suzu knocked at six-ten with the morning tea and the morning report: Node 1 confirmed, Node 2 confirmed, Node 3 confirmed. Nishida had not replied to the number he'd been using — which meant, in the logic of that silence, that he was proceeding. The east storage annex closure notification had been posted on the staff board Thursday afternoon, as Karen had said it would be.
He drank the tea. He thought about the afternoon.
The plan was this: be in the main library at 15:30. Visible. Accountable. The librarian on duty on Fridays was Takahashi-sensei, who noticed everyone who entered and remembered everyone who stayed, because she had been doing this for twenty-three years and considered the tracking of library users a professional responsibility. Bōzu and Hige would be outside, in the car, parked in the line of sight of the library windows. By 16:00, he would be in a location that could not be argued with.
The east wing would take care of itself.
He went to school.
---
The morning passed the way mornings passed when the afternoon was the thing — slowly at first, then all at once. He sat through four periods of instruction with the focused non-engagement of someone who was present physically and elsewhere mentally, and at no point did anything of significance happen, which was the correct outcome for a Friday morning.
At lunch, he ate in the stairwell. Suzu brought tea.
They did not discuss the afternoon. There was nothing left to discuss — everything had been said, everything was in place, the only remaining variable was time. He drank the tea. Suzu sat two steps above him, in her usual position, and read something she had taken from her jacket pocket. He looked at the courtyard through the window.
Yuki was not at the bench today. He noted the absence, filed it, and did not examine why he had looked for her.
"The truck driver confirmed estimated arrival," Suzu said, without looking up from whatever she was reading. "Four o'clock, east service gate. Forty-five minutes for the paperwork discrepancy."
"Good."
"Nishida was seen this morning near the east wing. Looking at the annex building."
He looked at the courtyard.
"He's confirming the location," he said.
"That was my interpretation as well."
He thought about Nishida spending his Friday morning walking past a building, looking at it, thinking about what was scheduled for later. The three people who had not reported anything. The particular geometry of a school environment where some things were allowed to accumulate because the cost of addressing them exceeded, for most people, the cost of silence.
"The literature club," he said.
"Ends at 16:15," Suzu said. "Amamiya-san's route takes her to the main hall storage. Estimated transit time: eight minutes from the club room, three minutes to process the book return, twelve minutes to the school gate." She turned a page. "She'll be at the gate by 16:38. Nishida arrives at the annex at 16:30."
Eight minutes of overlap between Nishida's window and Yuki's route, if everything ran exactly as planned.
Eight minutes during which the annex would be locked and the service entrance would be blocked and Nishida would find nothing available and leave.
Eight minutes he had spent four days engineering.
"I'll be at the library by 15:30," he said.
Suzu nodded once.
He finished the tea and stood. The afternoon was eleven hours and forty-seven minutes away and the morning was almost over.
---
At 14:47, his phone buzzed.
He was in the classroom — fifth period had ended three minutes ago and the room was still half-full of students in the process of packing up — and he read the message under the desk, because that was the kind of habit that had installed itself without being invited and that he could not currently afford to stop.
The message was from Suzu.
*Node 2 issue. Truck involved in minor accident on approach route. Delayed minimum 45 minutes. East service gate will not be blocked at 16:00.*
He read it twice.
Then he sat with the phone in his hand and thought, with the particular clarity that arrived when a variable changed without permission, about what Node 2 had been designed to do.
Node 3 — the annex closure — locked the main entrance. Node 2 — the truck — had been designed to block the service gate, which was adjacent to the exterior service door. The exterior service door that was not on the school map. The one Suzu had found.
If Nishida knew about it, Node 3 alone was insufficient.
He did not know whether Nishida knew about it. He had not confirmed that detail because he had trusted Node 2 to make it irrelevant.
He looked at the front of the classroom. The teacher had left. Students were filing out. Outside the window, the sky was the particular pale blue of a Friday afternoon in autumn that had no idea it was being used as a backdrop for a problem.
He thought about the exterior service door.
He had known about it since the second week — Suzu's note, the one she'd added at the bottom of her report in smaller handwriting: *second entrance, not on school map, accessible from east courtyard.* He had incorporated it into the plan by assigning Node 2 to block the area around it. The door itself he had treated as covered by implication. If the service gate was blocked, no one would be using the service area at all.
That logic had just stopped being valid.
He ran the alternate scenario: Nishida arrives, finds the main entrance closed, goes around to the service area, tries the exterior door, finds it unlocked. Whether Nishida knew about that door specifically was now irrelevant — anyone who arrived at the annex and found the main entrance blocked would try secondary access. That was simply what people who wanted to get somewhere did.
He had spent four days building a plan with three nodes, and he had not built in a redundancy for any of them failing.
He typed: *Confirm: does Nishida know about the exterior service door?*
He sent it. He waited.
Suzu's reply came six minutes later: *Cannot confirm in this timeframe.*
He looked at the reply for four seconds.
Then he stood, picked up his bag, and made a decision.
---
He did not go to the library.
He went to Bōzu first — found him in the car at the east lot, gave him three sentences of instruction that Bōzu received with the grave, nodding attention of someone being trusted with something important, which was how Bōzu received all instructions regardless of their actual gravity. Then he crossed the school grounds by the route he had mapped in the first week — behind the sports annex, through the gap between the equipment storage and the east garden wall, the route that appeared in no surveillance log because it passed no cameras and was used primarily by groundskeeping staff on their morning rounds.
He reached the east service corridor at 15:51.
The main entrance to the annex had Karen's closure notice on it: a printed sheet in a plastic sleeve, attached to the handle with official tape. The barrier tape he'd requested through Suzu was in place. Anyone coming through the main corridor would see an official closure and a physical barrier and conclude that the space was unavailable.
He checked the exterior service door.
It opened.
He stood in the doorway and considered this for a moment, then stepped inside, crossed to the interior side, and examined the latch. It was a simple bolt — the kind that locked from inside. He pulled it closed. Tested it from the inside. Solid.
He stepped back outside and pulled the door shut behind him. From the exterior, it was locked. From the interior, it could be opened with the bolt — but only from inside, which meant only by someone who was already in the annex, which meant no one could enter this way unless someone let them in.
He moved to the shadow of the covered walkway adjacent to the service door and waited.
15:58.
The east courtyard was quiet. The main afternoon rush of departing students flowed through the school's front and side gates; back here, in the service section of the grounds, there was nothing but the low sound of distant traffic and the particular hush of a building whose scheduled occupants had left.
He checked his phone. No further messages from Suzu.
He settled in to wait.
Waiting, he had learned, was a skill that this body understood differently than his previous one had. In his previous life, waiting had meant distraction — his phone, a podcast, something to occupy the gap between now and then. This body waited the way it did everything else: still, present, running the background calculation without requiring it to be interesting.
He watched the east courtyard.
It was quiet in the specific way that back sections of school buildings were quiet at end-of-day — not empty, but inhabited only by the sounds of a building doing its own business. Somewhere in the main structure, a door closed. A cart wheeled across a hard floor. The ventilation system made its steady, non-committal hum.
He checked his phone at 16:02. Nothing from Suzu. He put it away.
He thought about the three cases in Suzu's report. The ones that hadn't been reported. The particular geometry that made silence easier than speaking — not cowardice, just the accurate assessment of an environment that had not been designed to make speaking easier. He had spent four days working around that geometry rather than changing it, because changing it was not within the scope of what he was doing here, and because changing institutional geometry was slow work that required resources and standing he did not have.
He filed that thought under *later* as well, in the same folder as the thought about Suzu.
The folder was getting full.
---
At 16:09, he heard footsteps.
They were wrong. Not wrong in direction — they were coming from the main building side, the correct approach for anyone using the service corridor — but wrong in timing. Nishida was expected at 16:30. These footsteps were lighter than Nishida's would be, and they were moving at the unhurried pace of someone running an errand, not someone with intent.
He recognized the rhythm.
He recognized it because he had been listening to it, without deciding to, for three weeks.
Amamiya Yuki came around the corner into the service corridor carrying what appeared to be a box of materials for the literature club's ongoing storage arrangement — papers, a few small bound volumes, the kind of thing that got moved between classroom and annex when term projects accumulated beyond available shelf space.
She was heading toward the annex.
He processed this in approximately two seconds: she had a reason to be here that was entirely unconnected to Nishida, to the closure notice, to anything he had spent four days constructing. She was doing an errand for her club. The errand had taken her to the service corridor at 16:09 instead of 16:15 because she had finished early, or because someone had asked her to go earlier, or because any of a hundred ordinary reasons had shifted her schedule by six minutes.
Six minutes.
He stepped out of the shadow.
Not running. Moving at a pace that was deliberate without being aggressive, covering the distance between the covered walkway and the service corridor entrance in the time it took her to register that someone was there and look up.
She looked up.
She saw him.
He stopped when he was close enough to be clearly visible and far enough to not be in any way blocking her exit — position that said *I'm here* rather than *you're not leaving.*
"Kurogane-san." Her voice was careful. Not frightened, which he noted — she had not been frightened of him in the corridor three weeks ago either, just attentive. She was attentive now. "What are you doing here?"
"This section is closed." He kept his voice level, the information delivery of someone stating a fact. He gestured toward the closure notice on the annex door — the official tape, the plastic sleeve. "Electrical inspection. Posted yesterday."
She looked at the notice. Then she looked back at him.
"I didn't see the notice," she said.
"It was on the staff board." He looked at the box in her arms. "The main storage near the library does the same function on Fridays. East section closes early for the inspection window."
This was not entirely accurate. But it was accurate enough.
She looked at him with the expression he had come to recognize as her processing mode — the careful, patient accumulation of data before conclusion. He stood still and let her look. He had learned that trying to redirect her attention before she had finished looking made her look harder.
"The library storage," she said. "Right." She shifted the box in her arms, redistributing the weight. "Thank you."
She turned and walked back the way she had come.
He stood where he was until the sound of her footsteps faded into the ambient noise of the school building. Then he turned, walked back to the service door, went inside the annex through the main entrance — which he unlocked with the spare key Suzu had obtained and which he would return tomorrow — and bolted the exterior service door from the interior.
He exited through the main entrance, replaced the lock, smoothed the official tape back into place.
16:17.
Thirteen minutes until Nishida was scheduled to arrive.
He found the covered walkway again and waited.
---
Nishida arrived at 16:28.
He was a third-year Tōma had seen in corridors without noting particularly — broad-shouldered, the careful neutral expression of someone who had practiced looking unremarkable. He came from the main building side, walking with the loose unhurried pace of someone who knew where he was going and believed he had time.
He went to the main entrance first. Saw the closure notice. Read it.
Then he went around the building to the exterior service door.
Tried it.
It didn't open.
He tried it again, the way people tried locked doors when they didn't believe the first result. Then he stepped back and looked at the door. Looked at the building. Looked at the empty courtyard.
He stood there for a moment with the expression of someone whose plan had encountered reality and was revising.
Then he left. Back the way he had come, at the same unhurried pace, with the additional quality of someone who would need to reconsider their schedule.
Tōma watched him go from the shadow of the covered walkway.
He waited five minutes after Nishida was out of sight. Then he sent Suzu a message: *Clear.*
Her reply came in under a minute: *Understood. The truck has been redirected. No documentation.*
He put the phone in his pocket.
The east courtyard held its Friday afternoon quiet — the light going golden at the edges, the shadows stretching long across the paved surface, the distant sound of students at the school gate somewhere on the other side of the building. He stood in it for a moment and felt the specific, unremarkable quality of a plan that had worked: not triumphant, just done. The absence of a bad outcome was not the same as the presence of a good one, but it was, tonight, sufficient.
He walked back to the main building.
---
Suzu's final report came at dinner.
"Nishida left the grounds at 16:34," she said, standing at the study door with the green notebook. "No contact with any student. He sent a message at 16:41 to the number you haven't replied to. I don't have the content."
"It doesn't matter," he said.
She nodded. Then: "Amamiya-san was at the school gate at approximately 16:30. She waited for a few minutes before leaving."
He looked at her.
"She appeared to be looking for someone," Suzu said. Her voice was even. "Or thinking. It was difficult to determine which."
He was quiet for a moment.
"That's all," he said.
She closed the notebook. She did not leave immediately — she stood at the door for a beat that was slightly longer than her usual pauses, which meant she had something else and was deciding whether to say it.
"Suzu."
"She looked back once," Suzu said. "Before she left the gate. Toward the east building."
He looked at the window. Outside, the evening was doing what evenings did — settling, cooling, arranging itself into the particular quality of a Friday night that was either a conclusion or a beginning depending on how you read it.
"Thank you," he said.
Suzu left.
He sat with the tea and the end of the day and the image of a girl standing at the school gate, looking back once, toward a building where something had almost happened and hadn't. She didn't know what she was looking at. She knew, probably, that something was off — the service corridor, the closure notice, Kurogane Tōma standing in the east wing for no visible reason. The pieces were there. She didn't have enough of them yet to form a picture.
He picked up the pen.
In the notebook, under *Friday*, he crossed out *Don't be there.*
He wrote, below the crossed-out line: *Outcome: objective achieved. Cost: two conditions broken, no documentation.*
He looked at that for a while.
Then, below it, in the smaller handwriting he used for things he wasn't quite classifying yet: *She looked back.*
He closed the notebook.
You've reached the end of this chapter
