The report arrived at midday, carried by a courier on a horse that had been pushed hard enough that the animal was still breathing heavily when it arrived in the fortress courtyard. She heard it from the mật thất window — the particular sound of urgency, hooves on stone with more speed than the usual measured arrivals, the acoustic signature of news that could not wait.
She was at the secondary table when Gavin entered with the report. He set it in front of her without preamble.
She read it.
A nobleman — Lord Harlan Fenwick, minor title, social tier similar to Lord Vyne, no prior connection to the Crown Prince case that she could identify immediately. Found in his private study at the first morning bell by a household servant. The study door had been locked from the inside. The window had been latched. The cause of death was under investigation by the capital's investigative office, but the report noted that the body showed no signs of standard poisoning, no visible wounds, and had been positioned — the word was *arranged* — in a specific orientation that the investigating kỵ sĩ had described as deliberate.
And on the chest, placed with the precision of something intentional rather than incidental, a single black feather.
She finished reading and set the report on the table between them.
Gavin was watching her.
She looked up.
"Not the same perpetrator as the Crown Prince case," she said.
"No."
"Different methodology. Different signature. The Crown Prince case was pharmaceutical — precise, invisible, the kind of killing designed not to look like a killing. This was arranged. This was meant to be seen." She looked back at the report. "This perpetrator wants credit."
"Yes."
"Which is a fundamentally different psychological profile from our original perpetrator." She pulled the report closer and re-read the description of the body arrangement. "The position. Do we have details?"
He produced a secondary document — a sketch made by the investigating kỵ sĩ, the kind of rough documentation that preceded formal evidence processing. The figure had been positioned in the center of the room, seated upright in a chair that had been moved from its original location, arms at its sides, face toward the door. The arrangement had the quality of a display — a body staged to be found rather than found incidentally.
The black feather on the chest.
She looked at the Dossier interface as it updated:
[NEW CASE FILE: THE PUPPET KILLER — PRELIMINARY DESIGNATION] [VICTIM: LORD HARLAN FENWICK] [SIGNATURE ELEMENT: DELIBERATE ARRANGEMENT — BLACK FEATHER PLACEMENT] [CONNECTION TO ACTIVE CASE: UNDER ANALYSIS] [DANGER LEVEL: UNKNOWN — ASSESS]
"Connection to the Crown Prince case," she said. "Fenwick — was he at the banquet?"
Gavin went to the east wall and pulled the guest list without being asked. He scanned it, and she watched his face for the tell that would precede the answer.
The jaw.
"Yes," he said.
"Present at the banquet." She stood up. "Not a principal witness. Not on the investigative record. Just — present." She moved to the east wall to look at the list herself. Fenwick's name was there, mid-list, unremarkable. "Someone is cleaning up. Or —" She stopped.
"Or?"
"Or sending a message." She looked at the sketch again. "The arrangement is deliberate and visible. The feather is a signature — it is meant to be recognized. Not by the investigating team necessarily. By someone specific. Someone who is meant to understand what this means."
Gavin set the guest list down. He came to stand beside the secondary table, close enough that they were both within reach of the documents spread across it. She was aware of his proximity in the particular way she had been aware of it for days — as a constant in the room that required ongoing management.
"Malakai," she said.
"Possibly."
"Or someone operating in the same space. Someone who knows enough about the Crown Prince case to target people connected to it." She looked up at him. "We need to go to the capital."
"I know."
"The crime scene will degrade. The household staff will be coached on what to say. The original arrangements of evidence will be normalized by the time a formal investigation arrives if we wait for standard procedure."
"I am not planning to wait for standard procedure," he said.
She looked at him. "When?"
"Tomorrow morning. First light." He moved back to the main desk and began the particular set of actions she had learned to recognize as his preparation for a significant logistical operation — the organized retrieval of specific materials, the precise stacking of documents for transport, the efficiency of a person who had done this many times and had developed a system for it that required no conscious attention.
She watched him prepare and thought about leaving the pháo đài — about the specific quality of what had developed in this mật thất over nine days, the working silence and the careful honesty and the version of proximity that the Gray-Eyed Restriction allowed and the version it did not, and how all of that would translate into a different environment.
"Do you trust me enough to take me outside the fortress?" she asked.
He did not stop what he was doing.
"I trust you enough to take you to the capital," he said. "They are not the same statement."
"I know," she said.
He looked up from the desk.
"The second statement is larger," he said.
She was quiet for a moment.
"Yes," she said. "It is."
They looked at each other across the main desk with the documents of two cases between them and the cold northern light of the afternoon making everything in the room precise and particular, and she thought about the nine days that had brought them to this moment — the vault and the toxicological timeline and the handwriting samples and the name she had said in this room that he had not repeated but had used ever since — and she thought about the capital and what would be different there and what would not.
"Ready," she said, finally.
"You have not seen the capital," he said.
"I have the Dossier's records of it."
"That is not the same as seeing it." He said this without inflection, as though it were a purely factual observation, which she supposed it was. "It will be different than what you are expecting."
"Most things are," she said.
He looked at her for a moment longer — the amber eye doing the thing she had still not fully categorized, the quality of it sitting in her evidence map under the heading of: requires more instances before classification is possible.
Then he returned to his preparation.
She went to gather her own materials, and she stood for a moment at the secondary table and looked at the mật thất — the east wall with its filing system, the crystal lamps that made the obsidian surfaces reflect their own cold light, the main desk and the secondary table and the two positions they had occupied for nine days, the door that had stopped being locked some time ago and had not been locked since.
Arc 1 was closing.
She recognized it the way she recognized the end of a case phase — the particular coherence of gathered evidence, the opening of a new line that superseded the previous structure, the forward motion of something that had been building toward a transition.
The Dossier confirmed it with its quiet efficiency:
[ARC 1: THE BLOOD ROSE VERDICT — CLOSING] [STATUS: PERPETRATOR IDENTIFIED — PENDING FORMAL PROSECUTION] [NEW ARC INITIATING: THE PUPPET DANCE] [RELATIONSHIP STATUS: TRANSITIONING] [CASE PROGRESS: 55%]
She looked at the 55% for a moment.
Then she looked at the man across the room who had spent nine days building a working space that was also something else, who had read a restriction document aloud to both of them, who trusted her enough to take her to the capital, who had stopped saying "the Consultant" and started saying a name that was not in any official record.
She gathered her materials and prepared to leave, and when they walked out of the mật thất together — him slightly ahead, then not, then beside her as the corridor widened — she noted the position and filed it and kept walking.
