The note arrived folded into the lining of her glove, which she discovered only when she removed the glove at the end of the day's interviews and felt the small resistance of paper against silk.
She had not seen who placed it there. This was, in itself, significant — someone had accessed her clothing in a public setting, in a room full of household staff and Director Pell's kỵ sĩ, without her noticing the contact. Someone skilled, or someone who had practiced this particular maneuver before.
The note was brief, written in a hand she did not recognize: *The third bell, the Cartwright fountain in the merchant district. Alone. I know who visited Fenwick.*
She sat with the note for several minutes in the privacy of her assigned room before deciding what to do with it.
The correct procedural action, under the terms of her consultancy, was unambiguous: report any unauthorized contact to Gavin immediately, await his assessment, proceed only with his explicit authorization. She had read the protocols. She understood them. She had, in eleven days, never once violated them.
She was aware, sitting with the note, that she was considering violating them now.
The reasoning constructed itself with uncomfortable speed: an informant who had successfully infiltrated a Church-adjacent investigation enough to plant a note in her glove was an informant operating with real access and real risk to themselves. Anyone who escalated that contact to a formal, escorted, officially-sanctioned meeting would likely spook a source this cautious into silence — or worse, expose them to whoever they were risking themselves to inform on.
She knew this reasoning was, in part, rationalization. She filed the self-awareness honestly and continued constructing the argument anyway, because the argument was also, separately, true.
She went to the fountain alone.
The merchant district at the third bell was crowded enough to provide cover and busy enough that her absence from the investigative office would likely go unnoticed for at least an hour. She positioned herself near the fountain with the particular stillness of someone waiting without appearing to wait, and she watched the crowd with the full analytical attention she brought to every environment, cataloguing faces, gaits, the specific quality of anyone moving with purpose rather than simply moving.
The contact arrived at exactly the third bell — a young man, household livery she didn't immediately recognize, nervous in the specific way of someone doing something they understood to be dangerous.
"You came alone," he said, surprise and relief both audible.
"You asked me to," she said. "What do you know?"
He told her quickly, the words coming in a rush that suggested he had rehearsed them and was now executing the rehearsal under pressure: a name, a Church administrator with a specific title she didn't recognize, seen entering Fenwick's residence through the servants' entrance on the night of his death, leaving less than an hour before the household retired.
"You're certain of the identification?"
"I served wine at the dinner. I saw him myself, through the kitchen window, talking to Lord Fenwick's valet before he was let in the back way." The young man's hands were shaking slightly. "I need to not be seen talking to you. If anyone finds out —"
"I understand," she said. "Thank you."
He left quickly, disappearing into the crowd with the particular efficiency of someone who had planned his exit as carefully as his approach.
She stood by the fountain for a moment, processing the information, and turned to find Gavin standing twenty feet away.
He had not been there when she arrived. She was certain of this — she had scanned the area thoroughly before positioning herself, and a man of his height and bearing would not have escaped her notice. Which meant he had followed her, undetected, with a level of skill she had not anticipated him possessing in an urban environment that wasn't his own territory.
The expression on his face was not anger, precisely. It was something colder than anger, more controlled, the particular stillness she had learned to associate with him managing something significant rather than simply feeling it.
"You went to an unauthorized meeting with an unidentified informant," he said, "alone, without notifying me, in a city where you have no protection beyond what I have arranged."
"I had a lead that would have evaporated if I'd insisted on procedure," she said. "I made a judgment call."
"You made a judgment call that bypassed the protocols you agreed to."
"I did," she said, without flinching from it. "I'm not going to pretend otherwise."
They stood facing each other near the fountain, the crowd moving around them with the indifferent flow of a city that had no idea what had just happened in its midst, and she watched him process something that was clearly more complicated than simple procedural objection.
"What did you learn," he said finally, the question functional rather than warm.
She told him. He listened with his full attention, and she watched the investigative part of his mind engage with the information even as some other part of him remained visibly unsettled by the manner of its acquisition.
"This is significant," he said, when she finished. "It also could have gone considerably worse than it did."
"I assessed the risk before I went."
"You assessed it alone," he said, "which means I had no opportunity to identify a risk you might have missed. That is the entire function of the protocol you bypassed."
She held his gaze. "I understand the principle. I made a different calculation under time pressure, and the calculation was sound — the source was real, the information is real, and nothing happened to me."
"Nothing happened to you this time," he said, and something in his voice had shifted in a register she had not heard from him before — not the flat precision of professional objection, but something rawer, with an edge of feeling he was visibly working to control.
She understood, watching him manage it, that this was not purely about procedure.
She did not say so. She let the moment sit between them, charged and unresolved, the particular density of two people each aware of what was actually being discussed beneath the surface of what was being said.
"I'll report it formally," she said, eventually. "The full account, for the record. And I won't do it again without informing you first — not because the protocol demands it, but because I understand now what it costs you when I don't."
He was quiet for a long moment, the crowd moving around them, the cathedral spire visible above the rooftops in the middle distance.
"Thank you," he said finally, and the two words carried a weight that had nothing to do with the case at all.
