The reliquary's provenance checked out within two days, verified through three independent sources Director Pell's office managed to locate despite the Church's continued reluctance to cooperate with anything touching its internal affairs.
Tristan's information had been accurate in every particular she could confirm: the ceremonial item had indeed belonged to Lady Renwick, had indeed been reported stolen weeks before her death, and had indeed attracted documented interest from at least one Church administrator whose name, when it finally surfaced through the records, was not Drell but a more senior figure — a Cardinal Voss, no relation to her borrowed identity, whose position within the ecclesiastical hierarchy suggested oversight reaching considerably higher than a single parish administrator.
She brought the finding to Gavin with the particular satisfaction of evidence that confirmed a theory rather than complicating it.
"This connects Drell to someone above him," she said. "If Cardinal Voss was seeking the reliquary, and Drell had documented access to the aviary that supplied the feathers used in both killings, we're looking at a chain of command, not an isolated actor."
Gavin examined the documentation with his usual thoroughness, and she watched his expression sharpen with the particular focus that indicated genuine investigative engagement overriding whatever personal reservations he held about the source.
"This is good work," he said. "Regardless of where it originated."
The qualifier was deliberate, and she heard it as exactly the kind of careful distinction he had been making since Tristan's first appearance — acknowledging the value of information while refusing to extend any warmth toward the man who had provided it.
"You still don't trust him," she said.
"I have no reason to," Gavin said. "And several reasons not to."
The second of those reasons arrived the following afternoon, when Tristan returned to the temporary office with additional documentation — purchase records from his own antiquities ledgers, cross-referencing Cardinal Voss's known acquisitions across a five-year period, the kind of detailed institutional intelligence that suggested either remarkable diligence or considerably more direct involvement in ecclesiastical affairs than a simple merchant ought to possess.
He delivered the information with the same easy theatricality as before, settling into conversation with Irene over the documents with a familiarity that assumed, rather than requested, her continued engagement.
"You see the pattern," he said, leaning slightly closer to the table as he traced a particular sequence of transactions, the movement bringing him into a proximity that registered, immediately, as different in quality from the proximity she had grown accustomed to with Gavin — performed rather than natural, calculated for effect.
"I see it," she said, maintaining a careful distance that required no visible effort.
"You have a remarkable mind, Consultant. I find myself curious what other systems of understanding you might bring to bear on questions considerably less grim than murder investigations." His tone carried an invitation she registered with the same analytical clarity she applied to everything, recognizing the flirtation for what it was without particular discomfort or particular interest.
She was aware, in the same moment, of Gavin entering the room from the adjoining office, his attention finding the scene immediately — Tristan leaned close, the documents between them, the particular informality of the moment registering, she suspected, in ways that had nothing to do with the actual content of their conversation.
The temperature in the room did not change. But something in Gavin's bearing as he crossed to the main desk carried a quality she could only describe as cold in a way that had nothing to do with the season — a controlled stillness that radiated, without a single word or gesture of obvious hostility, an unmistakable warning.
Tristan registered it too. She watched him glance toward Gavin with an expression of barely concealed amusement, the particular satisfaction of a man who had successfully provoked exactly the reaction he had been testing for since his first visit.
"Arbiter," Tristan said, straightening from the table with deliberate unhurriedness. "I was just discussing the Cardinal's acquisition patterns with your Consultant. Remarkable mind, this one. I imagine she's invaluable to your work."
"Invaluable," Gavin said, the word delivered flat and precise, carrying no additional warmth toward the man who had spoken it.
Tristan's smile widened, and Irene understood, watching the exchange, that he had found his answer to whatever question he had been testing for — that the cold precision of Gavin's response told him considerably more than any direct statement could have.
"I'll leave you both to the investigation," Tristan said, gathering his own copies of the documentation with unhurried care. "Do let me know if my office can be of further service, Consultant. I find myself increasingly invested in the success of this particular case."
He left with a final, faintly knowing glance toward Gavin that Irene chose not to examine too closely, and the room settled into a silence that carried a weight she recognized as entirely separate from the investigation's actual progress.
"You don't need to manage him on my behalf," she said, once the door had closed.
"I wasn't managing him," Gavin said, his attention deliberately fixed on the documents Tristan had left behind. "I was reviewing the investigation's findings."
"Gavin."
He looked up at the use of his name, and she watched something in his controlled composure waver, fractionally, at the directness of her gaze.
"He's testing something," she said. "I noticed it the first day. He says things designed to provoke a reaction, and then he watches for the reaction."
"I'm aware," Gavin said.
"And you keep giving him one."
The silence that followed carried a particular charge, and she watched him weigh, with visible effort, how much of the truth he was prepared to offer.
"I am aware of that as well," he said finally, the admission arriving with the careful precision of a man choosing honesty over deflection at genuine personal cost. "I find I have less control over the reaction than I would prefer."
She held his gaze, and the unresolved tension of the moment settled between them with the particular weight of things both of them understood and neither of them, yet, was prepared to address directly.
"For what it's worth," she said, "his attention doesn't interest me. I'm aware of what he's doing, and I find it tedious rather than flattering."
Something in Gavin's expression eased — not fully, but perceptibly, the controlled tension in his shoulders relaxing by some small but noticeable degree.
"That is," he said carefully, "useful to know."
She returned to the documents, and neither of them said anything further about it, but she noted, working alongside him through the remainder of the afternoon, that the particular quality of silence between them had shifted again — not retreated, this time, but settled into something that felt, for the first time in days, like ground neither of them needed to defend.
