The remaining three names on Table Seven's list spent that night under armed guard, arranged through emergency authorization that Gavin secured with a speed that bypassed every standard procedural delay Director Pell's office typically required.
Irene stood in the temporary office past midnight, the lamplight burning low, the documents of the Halloway scene spread across the table in the careful methodical arrangement she always imposed on chaos, and she worked through the evidence with a grim, determined focus that had replaced the earlier shock entirely.
Gavin worked beside her without comment, the silence between them carrying a different texture than any she had catalogued before — not the comfortable working quiet of accumulated trust, but something heavier, weighted by the death they had arrived too late to prevent and the urgent necessity of preventing the next one.
"The killer knew we were close," she said, eventually, breaking the silence with the conclusion she had been building toward for the past hour. "The timing of Halloway's death — the same evening we identified the pattern — that's not coincidence. They accelerated their own schedule."
"Which means they have intelligence about the investigation's progress," Gavin said, his expression sharpening with the particular focus of a man integrating an uncomfortable new variable. "Someone inside this office, or someone with access to our findings, is feeding information to whoever is directing these killings."
She considered this with the careful analytical distance the conclusion demanded, even as her chest tightened at the implications. "Director Pell's staff. Or —" She stopped.
"Or Tristan," Gavin said, finishing the thought she had hesitated to voice.
"He's had access to our findings for days," she said. "The reliquary information, the Cardinal Voss connection — all of it came through him, or was verified by us using leads he provided. If he's playing a longer game, he could be feeding us just enough genuine information to maintain access while reporting our progress to whoever is orchestrating the killings."
"Or he's exactly what he appears to be — an opportunist seeking advantage from proximity to a significant investigation, with no deeper involvement at all." Gavin's voice carried the careful balance of a man unwilling to let personal distrust override evidentiary rigor. "We need to verify, not assume."
She nodded, filing the question alongside everything else that demanded resolution, and returned to the immediate evidence in front of her — the careful reconstruction of Halloway's final hours, the pattern of his death matching the previous two with an exactness that suggested ritual rather than improvisation.
The extraction from the scene, when she finally activated it on a recovered personal item, gave her the clearest fragment yet — a voice, still distorted but more present than before, words that emerged from the degraded audio with painful clarity: *"You understood, once, what it cost to be overlooked. I am only ensuring you are finally seen."*
She surfaced from the extraction with the particular disorientation that always followed a significant pull, and found Gavin at her shoulder, waiting with the patience he had learned across the accumulated weeks, his attention fixed on her with an intensity that registered as concern rather than simple investigative impatience.
"The voice," she said, once her processing had stabilized. "It said something about being overlooked. About ensuring the victim was finally seen."
"That's not institutional language," Gavin said slowly. "That's personal grievance."
"Yes," she said, the realization crystallizing as she spoke it aloud. "This isn't purely about the Church's institutional interests anymore. Whoever is committing these killings has a personal wound driving the method — the visibility, the staging, the deliberate display. They were overlooked, somehow, and now they're making sure their victims are seen in death the way they were never seen in life."
Gavin absorbed this with the particular stillness she had learned indicated his full analytical engagement. "That changes the profile considerably."
"It narrows it," she said. "We're not looking for an institutional operative executing orders. We're looking for someone with a specific, personal history of being overlooked by exactly the social circle they're now targeting. Someone connected to the Church's resources, but motivated by something that predates any institutional directive."
They worked through the remainder of the night reconstructing the profile from this new angle, and as the first grey light of dawn began filtering through the office's narrow windows, Irene found herself exhausted in a way that went beyond simple physical fatigue — the particular depletion of a mind that had spent hours processing grief, urgency, and analytical revelation simultaneously, with no space left for anything else.
Gavin noticed before she fully registered it herself.
"You need rest," he said, his voice gentler than the working register he had maintained throughout the night.
"There's still work," she said, though the protest carried less conviction than she intended.
"There will be work tomorrow as well," he said. "You are not useful to this investigation if you collapse from exhaustion before we identify who's responsible."
She looked at him — really looked, in the pale grey light of approaching dawn, and saw the same exhaustion mirrored in his own expression, the controlled discipline straining visibly beneath the weight of a night that had cost both of them more than either had initially calculated.
"You should rest too," she said.
"I will," he said, in a tone that suggested he had no intention of doing so until the immediate threats to Table Seven's remaining names had been fully secured.
She did not argue further. She gathered what she needed for a few hours of inadequate sleep, and as she reached the door, she paused, looking back at him — still at the desk, still working, the lamplight catching the particular silver-edged exhaustion of a man who had spent the entire night refusing to let her carry the weight of Halloway's death alone.
"Thank you," she said, "for staying."
He looked up, and the expression that crossed his face — tired, genuine, stripped of the careful control he maintained for every other audience — carried a warmth that required no further elaboration.
"Always," he said, and the word followed her out into the grey dawn light with a weight that had very little to do with the case at all.
