The letter arrived sealed with black wax, no insignia, delivered to the temporary office by a courier who could not be located afterward despite Director Pell's investigators searching the surrounding streets within minutes of its discovery.
It was addressed, in a careful, deliberate hand, directly to her.
*Consultant Voss,*
*I have followed your work with considerable admiration. Your reconstruction of my methodology — the architecture of grievance, the precise psychology of needing to be seen — was, I confess, more accurate than I expected from a mind operating in an unfamiliar world.*
*You understand something most of them never could. What it costs to be overlooked by people who believe their own importance excuses their cruelty. I think, perhaps, you and I are not so different in this particular wound, whatever else separates us.*
*I will not stop. There are more names on that list than the ones you've already identified, and more lists beyond this one. But I find myself curious about you, specifically — about the woman who arrived from nowhere and somehow understood, faster than anyone in this empire, exactly what I am doing and why.*
*Perhaps we will speak directly, in time. Until then, know that I take no particular pleasure in your distress. I simply require that the world finally see what it has spent so long refusing to acknowledge.*
*— A Friend in Understanding*
She read it three times before she set it down, and the particular cold that settled through her chest had nothing to do with the office's temperature.
Gavin had arrived partway through her second reading, and she watched his expression sharpen with controlled alarm as he took in the letter's contents over her shoulder, his proximity arriving without the usual negotiation of distance that had governed their interactions since the audit's conclusion.
"This changes the threat assessment considerably," he said, his voice carrying the particular flat precision that indicated genuine concern beneath the professional surface. "They're not simply aware of the investigation. They're specifically focused on you."
"They think I understand them," she said, the words arriving with a complicated weight she had not expected to feel. "And they're not entirely wrong. The profile I built was accurate enough that they recognized themselves in it."
"That doesn't mean you share anything with them beyond an analytical understanding," Gavin said, his voice sharpening with an intensity that suggested he had registered something in her tone that concerned him beyond the immediate threat. "The killer's wound does not make you kin to them."
She looked at him, recognizing the precise accuracy of his concern, and felt something ease, fractionally, at the directness with which he had addressed it. "I know that," she said. "But understanding someone's psychology well enough to predict their behavior requires understanding, at some level, what drives it. That proximity is uncomfortable. It doesn't mean I've lost the distinction between empathy and identification."
"Good," he said, and the single word carried a weight of relief she registered clearly.
The Dossier flickered at the edge of her vision, updating with the particular urgency she had learned to associate with significant case developments:
[DIRECT CONTACT: PERPETRATOR — FIRST INSTANCE] [THREAT LEVEL: ELEVATED — TARGET SPECIFIC] [CASE PROGRESS: 67%]
"We need to increase your security protocols," Gavin said, already moving toward the practical considerations the letter demanded. "You don't move through the city without escort, effective immediately. No exceptions, regardless of the circumstance."
"I understand," she said, and the lack of resistance in her response carried its own significance — the lesson of the informant meeting, weeks earlier, had clearly registered as fully as she had intended it to.
"And I want the handwriting analyzed," she continued, redirecting her own attention to the investigative opportunity embedded in the threat. "This is the first direct sample we have. If we can match it against any of our suspects — Drell, Cardinal Voss, even Tristan, given his continued proximity to the investigation —"
"I'll have it cross-referenced immediately," Gavin said.
She returned to the letter, reading it a fourth time with the analytical distance she had been struggling, on her first two readings, to fully maintain. The language was educated, controlled, carrying a particular formal precision that suggested someone accustomed to careful written communication — a cleric, perhaps, or someone with extensive administrative training.
"The phrase 'I think, perhaps, you and I are not so different,'" she said. "They're trying to establish a connection. Trying to make this personal between us specifically, not just between the killer and the investigation broadly."
"To what end?"
"Manipulation," she said. "If they can convince me there's some shared understanding between us, they create leverage — a hesitation in how aggressively I pursue them, perhaps, or a vulnerability they can exploit later. It's a sophisticated psychological tactic, and the fact that they're employing it suggests considerable intelligence and considerable awareness of exactly how profiling work functions."
Gavin was quiet for a moment, processing this with the particular stillness she had learned indicated genuine concern. "You're saying the killer understands your methodology well enough to attempt to use it against you."
"Yes," she said. "Which means whoever this is has either studied behavioral analysis directly, or has access to someone who has. That narrows our suspect pool considerably — this isn't simply someone with Church resources and personal grievance. This is someone educated specifically in psychological manipulation at a level that matches, or potentially exceeds, my own training."
The implication settled into the room with a particular weight, and she watched Gavin's expression shift toward something colder, more focused — the recognition of an adversary considerably more formidable than either of them had initially assessed.
"We need to identify who, within the Church hierarchy or its adjacent networks, has access to this kind of specialized knowledge," he said.
"Agreed," she said. "And we need to do it quickly. Whoever wrote this letter is not finished, and they've made clear that they're paying close attention to exactly how I respond."
They worked through the remainder of the evening with a new, sharper urgency, the letter's threat lending the investigation a personal weight that neither of them needed to articulate directly — the unspoken understanding that the danger had shifted, now, into territory that touched her specifically, and that protecting the investigation's progress had become, somewhere in the accumulated tension of the past hours, inseparable from protecting her.
