Second Sky was not what she expected.
She had built a mental picture of it across the months — from the notation, from the photographs Toma had found of the Mirai Axis building's rooftop access records, from the simple logic of a seventh stop that was supposed to provide the culminating view. She had expected something dramatic: a panoramic overlook, a designed moment, the architectural equivalent of a final chord.
What she found was a working space.
The rooftop was functional — maintenance access, HVAC units, the practical infrastructure of a large building's upper surface. There were some design elements: a low parapet, a section of weathered wooden decking that suggested someone had intended more than pure utility. But it was not the polished destination she had imagined.
Which meant it was, she understood immediately, exactly right.
Akio had not been building toward spectacle. He had been building toward a point of view — a specific physical location from which the relationship between the city's layers became visible. The design of the space did not matter. The view from the space was what mattered.
She walked to the northeast corner, which was where the notation had pointed.
She looked.
For a long time, she did not say anything.
Below and around and beyond: Amahara. Not one version — all the versions simultaneously. The harbor where Harbor Drain Six ran under the water. Hoshimachi Lane, visible as a cluster of older rooftops among the newer buildings. The hill where Seika Academy sat. The section of elevated transit line that included the ghost of the old coastal spur. And in the east, close enough to see clearly, the building that had been built over what had once been the Kanzaki Glassworks site — the glass facade reflecting the late afternoon sky, giving nothing away.
The seven stops were all visible from this point.
She had known this intellectually, from the notation, from the map. Knowing it intellectually was not the same as standing here and seeing all of them at once, the full circuit of the year present simultaneously in the geography of a single view.
She thought: oh.
She thought: this is what he wanted someone to see.
She thought: not just the argument — the proof that the argument was about something real. That the seven places existed in the same city, that they were connected, that the pattern was visible if you stood in the right place.
Toma was beside her. She was aware of this without looking at him. He was very still in the way he was still when something was landing.
She looked at him.
His face had the unmanaged expression — the one beneath the managed one, the one she had learned to read over a year. He was looking at the city the way someone looked at a thing they had been trying to understand for a very long time and were, in this moment, understanding.
She thought: he sees it.
She thought: all of it. The map, the seven stops, the years his father spent building this argument. The view from here that proves the argument is real.
She thought: this is what Akio built this for.
Not the legal case. Not the investigation. This moment — a person standing here and understanding. Ideally his son.
"Your father stood here," she said. "When the building was under construction. He built this into the structure before anyone was using the building."
"Yes," Toma said. Quiet.
"He wanted someone to stand here and see this."
"Yes."
"He wanted you to stand here."
Toma was quiet for a long time.
"He didn't plan for you," he said finally. "Or anyone specific. He planned for whoever followed the map. He built it for the person who would follow it to the end."
"And that was us."
"Yes." He looked at her. "Both of us."
She thought: yes.
She thought: both of us.
She thought: together.
She took out her phone and photographed the view — not one image but seven, each one centered on one of the seven stops in sequence. Then she sent them all to Mei with the caption: *The seventh stop. The view he built it for.*
Mei replied immediately: *This is the cover of the book.*
She looked at the message and thought: yes. Maybe it is.
She looked at the city spread out below her.
She thought about a sentence: *if the city forgets the way home, start from the first stop.*
She had started from the first stop.
She had followed it all the way here.
She was standing at the end of the map.
The city was below her, both versions at once — the one that had been built and the one that had been cleared to build it. The palimpsest visible to anyone who knew how to look.
She knew how to look.
She had spent a year learning.
She thought: I am going to keep learning.
She thought: this view is not an ending. This is where the record says: this is what I am talking about. This is the city I mean.
She put her phone away.
She stood with Toma in the late afternoon light on Second Sky, at the end of a map that had taken them through every hidden room in the city, and she thought: we did it.
She thought: we actually did it.
She thought: and now there is more to do.
That was right.
That was exactly right.
She was glad.
She was very, very glad.
She stood there a moment longer, memorizing it.
Then she turned.
The city was still there.
The work was still going.
Both were going to be there for a long time.
She was glad of that too.
All of it.
Every single thing about it.
She walked back toward the access door.
Toma walked beside her.
Below them, the city continued.
She was part of it.
She was going to keep being part of it.
That was the whole of it.
That was everything.
She came back to Second Sky twice more before university started.
The second time alone, early in the morning before the building was fully staffed, with the access code Naomi had given them and the specific purpose of photographing the view under different light conditions. Not for the investigation — for herself. For the archive. Because a view that showed you the relationship between the city's layers deserved to be documented in more than one state.
She stood at the northeast corner in the early morning light and looked.
The harbor was silver. The lane was still sleeping. The hill where Seika Academy sat was just beginning to catch the sun. The ghost spur of the old coastal line was barely visible from this angle, but she knew where to look.
She photographed methodically, the way she had learned to photograph in the archive — not for beauty but for accuracy. What was here. What was visible. What the record should contain.
She thought about the title her thesis was taking shape around: *Private Witnesses and Public Records: The Methodology of Unofficial Urban Documentation.* Not specifically about Akio — she had decided early that making it specifically about Akio risked reducing him to a subject rather than treating him as a practitioner. But his approach was the central case study, examined alongside three other examples she had found in the heritage literature.
She thought: the argument is getting more complete in the scholarly record too.
She thought: good.
The third time she came to Second Sky, Toma was with her. It was the last week of August, three days before orientation at the university. The investigation had moved forward. The second article had run. The first findings had been released.
They stood at the northeast corner together.
She looked at the seven stops — all visible, the complete circuit of the year.
"Next year," she said, "I want to bring a class here. Show them how to read the city from this point."
He looked at her. "You'll be teaching next year?"
"Professor Arita wants me to assist with the first-year studio. If I'm interested." She looked at the view. "I'm interested."
"Yes," he said. "You would be good at that."
She thought about teaching students to read cities. To look for what was beneath the visible layer. To understand that places had histories that the official record did not always preserve.
She thought: I am going to spend my life doing this.
She thought: I am very glad of that.
The city was below them, both versions at once.
She thought: this is the view he built it for.
She thought: and we are here.
She thought: that is right.
That was exactly right.
She was here.
She was going to keep being here.
For a very long time.
She was glad.
She was very, very glad.
She stood on Second Sky with the city below her and the year behind her and everything ahead, and she was exactly where she was supposed to be.
Yes.
That was right.
All of it.
Everything.
The work continued in the way work continued when it was real — not with dramatic forward motion but with the quiet accumulation of days, each day adding something small to the record, the record growing in the way that things grew when they were being attended to rather than forced. She had learned this kind of attention over the year. The slow kind. The kind that did not require urgency to sustain itself.
She thought about the city as she walked home through it in the evenings. The official version and the hidden version, both present simultaneously. She had learned to read both. She was still learning. She thought she would always be still learning, which was the right state for someone who had decided to do this work for a long time.
Toma found her in the archive one afternoon with a question about a notation she had been trying to decode. He sat across the table and explained it in the methodical way he explained things, starting from the principle and working outward. She took notes. She asked questions. He answered them. This was the shape of their collaboration — his structure and her spatial intuition, working together toward something neither could reach alone.
She thought about what it meant to build a record. Not to prove something to a court — that was part of it, but not the whole. To say: this existed. This was real. These people were here. The city was this shape at this time, and even if the shape changed, the fact of it having been this shape remained in the record for anyone who came later and needed to know.
Mei's work continued in parallel with hers — the journalism and the heritage studies, two different approaches to the same fundamental question: what happened here, and why does it matter, and who gets to decide whether it is remembered. She thought about the complementarity of those approaches. The investigation that exposed the wrong and the archive that preserved what was right about what had existed.
She walked home through the autumn city and thought about the year that had passed and the years ahead. The work was not done — it would not be done in any finite way, because cities did not stop arguing with themselves and there would always be things worth preserving and people who needed someone to say: this was real, this matters, this deserves to be in the record.
She was that person. She had chosen to be. She was going to keep choosing it.
She was glad.
She was very glad.
All of it.
The whole of it.
She kept going.
