The investigation's first substantial findings were released in a public report in early September — the week before university started, which she noticed with the timing-awareness of someone who had spent a year paying attention to when things happened relative to other things.
She read the executive summary standing up at her kitchen table, which she did when the news was too significant to sit with.
Two development approvals invalidated. Three officials suspended. The Hoshimachi Lane renewal project placed under indefinite review pending completion of the investigation. A recommendation for broader examination of development approval processes across the city.
Not everything. Not Renji Morita, who had resigned and was currently being examined by a separate regulatory body. Not the full accounting for the surveillance data, which would take more time. Not the restoration of what had already been lost.
But real. The kind of real that existed in official records and could not be revised by press release.
She messaged Toma: *Did you see it?*
He replied: *Yes. My father read it this morning.*
*How is he?*
*He made two cups of tea again.*
She smiled at her phone.
She thought: two cups of tea.
She thought: yes. That is the right response.
She messaged the group — Toma, Mei, Haru, Akio: *The first findings are out. We should mark this somehow.*
Mei replied: *Hoshimachi Lane. Tonight.*
Haru replied: *Yes.*
Toma replied: *Yes.*
Akio, after a pause: *I will be there.*
She looked at the list of responses and felt something she had not had language for before the autumn — something that was not triumph or relief but more like witnessing. The feeling of being present when something that was supposed to happen finally happened. The feeling of having been part of making it possible.
She thought: we did this.
She thought: all of us.
She thought: together.
She went to Hoshimachi Lane that evening.
Kishida-san's bakery was still open — it was always still open in the evenings when there were people in the lane. The five of them — Rina, Toma, Mei, Haru, Akio — arrived within ten minutes of each other, as if the lane had called them.
Kishida-san came to the door when she saw them.
She looked at the group. At Akio, whom she had not met before, and she did not know his name or his history but she looked at him the way she looked at things she understood without needing explanation.
"Come in," she said. "I'll make tea."
They came in.
They sat in the small space of the bakery, mismatched chairs, the smell of anko and warm bread and the late summer through the door. Kishida-san made tea and brought it to each of them.
She set the last cup in front of Akio.
"You worked on this city," she said to him. Not a question — she saw something in him that she recognized.
"Yes," he said.
"The long kind of work."
"Yes."
She nodded. She sat down with her own tea. "My grandmother came to this lane in 1923 after the earthquake," she said. "She rebuilt here because this is where she had people. Three generations of building and being here." She looked around the bakery — at the photographs on the walls, the equipment, the accumulated presence of a place that had been lived in for a hundred years. "I will probably die before I know if the work is done. My grandmother did not know if her work would hold. But she did the work."
Akio was quiet.
"You did the work," Kishida-san said to him. Simply. The way she said things she meant.
He looked at her. The expression that Rina had learned to recognize — the one that appeared when something landed somewhere that had been waiting for it.
"Yes," he said. "We all did."
Kishida-san looked around the table.
"Good," she said.
They drank their tea.
Outside, Hoshimachi Lane was still there — the fabric store, the lanterns, the ordinary life of a place that had been here for a hundred years and was, for now, still here.
Not forever. Nothing was forever.
But still here tonight.
Still real tonight.
Still home.
She held her tea and looked at the people around the table — the ones who had been there from the beginning and the one who had built the beginning before they arrived — and she thought: this.
She thought: this is what it was for.
Not the legal findings. Not the invalidated approvals.
This.
Five people in a bakery in a lane that was still standing.
Doing the work together.
Still here.
She was glad.
She was very, very glad.
All of it.
The whole of it.
Everything.
She was home.
University began on a Wednesday.
She walked to campus on the first morning through streets she had been walking for a year — past the convenience store, past the small shrine, through the neighborhood she had learned to read as the city's hidden palimpsest — and arrived at a building she had not been in before.
The Urban Design and Heritage Studies department occupied the fourth floor of a building that had, according to the plaque by the entrance, been a commercial warehouse until the nineteen sixties. The department had kept one of the loading bay doors as a feature. She liked this.
Professor Arita met the first-year students in a room lined with maps. Not the official city maps — the other kind: hand-drawn surveys, photocopied planning documents, the kind of documents she recognized from Rain Archive.
The professor introduced herself. She asked the students why they were there.
Rina had her answer ready — the honest one, not the polished version. She said: she had spent a year learning that the record of what existed in cities was often different from what had actually existed, and she wanted to understand that gap well enough to do something about it.
Professor Arita looked at her for a moment.
"That's the right reason," she said.
Class began.
---
Toma met her after class at the transit stop.
She had not asked him to. He had come anyway. This was still, and would probably always be, simply the shape of things.
They walked home through the autumn city — September now, the light changing, the quality of it recognizably the same as the September of the year before, when she had picked a lock on a Thursday afternoon and found a map that had been waiting.
She thought: one year.
She thought: everything in one year.
She thought: and it is not over.
It was not over. The investigation was still ongoing. The expanded article was still circulating. The archive was still being catalogued. The heritage program had five years ahead of her. Akio and Toma had conversations still to have. Kishida-san's lane was still only provisionally protected.
None of it was over.
But the first year was done.
She walked home through the autumn city and thought about what the year had been. The map. The hidden rooms of Amahara. The morning archives and the tidal island and the flooding drain and the hospital waiting room and the rooftop with the view that showed you everything at once.
She thought: I found the way home.
She thought: not to a place. To a way of being in a place. To the fullness of being present in the city she lived in, with the people she had found in the following of a map.
She thought: yes.
She thought: that is what the sentence meant.
*If the city forgets the way home, start from the first stop.*
She had started from the first stop.
She had found her way.
She was going to keep finding it.
For a very long time.
She was glad.
She was very, very glad.
All of it.
The whole of it.
Home.
The work continued in the way work continued when it was real — not with dramatic forward motion but with the quiet accumulation of days, each day adding something small to the record, the record growing in the way that things grew when they were being attended to rather than forced. She had learned this kind of attention over the year. The slow kind. The kind that did not require urgency to sustain itself.
She thought about the city as she walked home through it in the evenings. The official version and the hidden version, both present simultaneously. She had learned to read both. She was still learning. She thought she would always be still learning, which was the right state for someone who had decided to do this work for a long time.
Toma found her in the archive one afternoon with a question about a notation she had been trying to decode. He sat across the table and explained it in the methodical way he explained things, starting from the principle and working outward. She took notes. She asked questions. He answered them. This was the shape of their collaboration — his structure and her spatial intuition, working together toward something neither could reach alone.
She thought about what it meant to build a record. Not to prove something to a court — that was part of it, but not the whole. To say: this existed. This was real. These people were here. The city was this shape at this time, and even if the shape changed, the fact of it having been this shape remained in the record for anyone who came later and needed to know.
Mei's work continued in parallel with hers — the journalism and the heritage studies, two different approaches to the same fundamental question: what happened here, and why does it matter, and who gets to decide whether it is remembered. She thought about the complementarity of those approaches. The investigation that exposed the wrong and the archive that preserved what was right about what had existed.
She walked home through the autumn city and thought about the year that had passed and the years ahead. The work was not done — it would not be done in any finite way, because cities did not stop arguing with themselves and there would always be things worth preserving and people who needed someone to say: this was real, this matters, this deserves to be in the record.
She was that person. She had chosen to be. She was going to keep choosing it.
She was glad.
She was very glad.
All of it.

She kept going.
