He paused. "I don't know what I thought I was doing. I just kept doing it."

She sat with this for a moment.

She said: "Three weeks ago is Day 100."

"Approximately, yes."

"You've been doing this since before you had the word."

"Yes."

She looked at him in the partition doorway. She thought about the word and about what had come before the word -- what the word had been the naming of, the thing that had been true before it was named.

"That's the longest anything has ever been done for me without anyone asking for something in return," she said.

He was quiet.

"I know that's not why you did it," she said. "I'm not accounting for it. I'm noting it."

He looked at her. She looked at him. They were in the amber entry corridor and the greenhouse was two hundred meters northeast and the word was between them and the transit hour was coming.

"All right," he said.

She stood in the corridor and held the quality of the moment, which was not quite the right moment for anything in particular but was the right moment to be in, and he stood in the corridor and held it with her, and neither of them moved.

After a while she said: "Now I'll make the tea."

She went to the kitchen. He changed out of the surface kit and joined her. They had the tea in the kitchen in the transit hour, and the greenhouse was closed and complete two hundred meters northeast, and somewhere in the station's ambient sounds was the word and the light and the six minutes of seeing and the work they had been doing, all of it, which was theirs.

She wrote to Anwen that afternoon about the greenhouse.

Not in technical terms -- she described it the way she had been describing things to Anwen: the light quality through the filtered panels, the specific warmth of it on her face, the six minutes without protective equipment. She described what it was like to take off the mask inside an enclosed structure and breathe the surface air without needing to manage the exposure. She described the way the light moved across the floor of the greenhouse when the UV cycle hit its midmorning point, which she had watched from inside for the first time, which was different from watching it from outside because inside the light had edges.

She also wrote: *He built it. He found it three weeks after I arrived and has been repairing it quietly, without asking anyone, without explaining, just -- working on it because he wanted to. He told me this morning that he found it before we had the terms conversation. Before any of the arrangement was established. He just found it and started working on it.*

She paused with her pen. Then she wrote: *I think I understand now what you meant when you said you had been wanting someone to be careful with him. He is careful with everyone. He is meticulous about not taking what isn't offered, about preparing for refusal, about maintaining the distinction. He builds things without asking for anything in return. I think the people in his life before didn't know how to receive that kind of care, so he stopped expecting anyone to.*

She stopped. She read this back.

She wrote: *I receive it. I want you to know that. I receive it carefully and completely.*

She sealed the letter.

She went to the Surface Room, where the notebook was on the shelf. She opened it to today's date and added an entry: *The greenhouse is finished. Four panels. UV-filtered glass. The transit hour came through the panels at 0:712 surface time. She took off the mask. The light was on her face. I saw it.*

She added below: *This is noted.*

She put the notebook back on the shelf. She went to the analysis room.

The day continued. The relay documentation needed three more sections. The synthesis documentation needed its final confirmation review. The station ran its standard systems. Outside, two hundred meters northeast, the greenhouse stood with its closed roof and its UV-filtered panels and the light that moved across its floor in the midmorning.

It was theirs.

She thought: I have a word and a greenhouse and a correspondence and a person who was careful before he knew it was going to be received. I have a station that is mine. I have a route that I built. I have the transit hour. I have the names.

She thought: this is what I have.

She thought: it is enough. More than enough. I am going to hold it correctly.

She opened the relay documentation and returned to work.
