The fifth morning on the road, Elyra noticed the damage on his armor.
She noticed it the way she noticed most things: obliquely, in the process of noticing something else. She had been watching him supervise the morning camp breakdown, cataloguing his patterns of movement, when the light hit the chest plate of his Nightwarden armor at an angle that showed her something that the standard grey-silver surface usually concealed: a roughness in the metal at the upper left, a slightly different texture, the kind you got when Starsteel had been in contact with active Hollowing energy long enough to leave a residue.
She had seen this before on armor returned from high-exposure situations. It was not dangerous at low concentrations. At higher concentrations, it could conduct Hollowing energy into the wearer, which was unpleasant at best and potentially catastrophic at worst.
She went to find him.
He was at the supply pack checking the day’s route, his back to her as she approached. She said his name, which was the first time she had used it directly, and he turned.
“Your left chest plate,” she said. “There’s Hollowing residue on the surface. It should be cleaned before we go further into the active zone.”
He looked down at the armor. Then at her. Then, without commentary, he reached for the chest plate buckles.
She set her field kit on the nearest flat surface and prepared the work. Cleaning Hollowing residue from armor was a standard Starbinding support task: she had done it dozens of times for Nightwardens who came back from high-exposure engagements. It was not complicated. It required precision but not significant memory cost, only a small amount of thread and careful attention to the surface.
He removed the chest plate and set it flat on the supply pack. She pulled on the work gloves, the thinner pair that gave her more sensitivity, and positioned the thread.
The initial reading was normal. Residue on the outer surface of the metal, moderate concentration, accessible with a standard thread sweep. She began the sweep, and the thread moved across the metal cleanly.
Then she reached the edge of the plate where the gap between the metal and the underlying padding existed, where the plate’s edge was not fully sealed, and the thread crossed that boundary and made contact with the skin of his hand where he was steadying the plate from beneath.
The thread lit up.
Not the dull reactive glow of thread encountering Hollowing residue. Something brighter and different in quality: the glow she associated with a thread encountering a Starshard, or a Star Wound. As though the energy inside him was alive in the same way star energy was alive.
She pulled back. Looked at the thread. Then looked at her hand, and then at his.
“Hold still,” she said.
She lowered the thread again, deliberately this time, and let it make contact with his skin at the wrist where the Covenant mark was. The same response: bright, immediate, the thread responding as though it had found something significant to anchor to.
She pulled back again. The thread returned to its baseline glow.
She looked up at him.
He was looking at her. Not at the thread. At her face. She had the impression that he had been watching her expression throughout and was waiting to see what she was going to do with what she had found.
“This happened before,” he said. It was not a question.
“Not with this kind of intensity,” she said carefully. “I felt something when the preliminary binding was done. I attributed it to the ceremonial thread. But this—” She looked at the thread in her hand. “This is not the Covenant thread responding. This is you.”
He was quiet for a moment. Not the considering quiet. Something else. A quality she did not have a name for yet but which she was adding to her catalog.
“I know,” he said.
“You know that your body responds to Starbinding thread like a Star Wound.”
“I know that something is not right,” he said. “I have known for some time. I don’t know what it means.”
She looked at him for a long moment. The field kit was open between them. His chest plate was lying flat on the supply pack. Around them the unit was finishing the camp breakdown with professional efficiency and they were standing in a pocket of stillness that was separate from all of it.
She said: “I’m going to finish cleaning the plate. When I’m done I’m going to make a note and I’m not going to ask you questions you don’t want to answer. But at some point, if you’re willing, I’d like to understand what you know about it.”
He looked at her for a moment with the between-the-modes look, which was developing more texture for her now. “All right,” he said.
She finished cleaning the plate. The residue came off cleanly in three passes. She tested the surface and found it clear. She handed the plate back to him.
He buckled it back into position. She put the thread away.
They looked at each other briefly in the thin morning light.
“Thank you,” he said. For the cleaning. She understood the precision of it: he was thanking her for the cleaning, specifically, and not for the rest of what had just happened, because the rest of what had just happened was something they had implicitly agreed to set aside for now.
“Thank you for holding still,” she said.
A corner of his mouth moved. It was so brief she almost did not catch it. Then he turned and went back to the route assessment, and she turned and went back to her pack, and the unit moved out northward and the morning continued.
In the field journal that evening, she wrote:
*The thread responds to him the way it responds to a Star Wound. I have been trying to think of what would cause this. The possibilities I can construct are: one, something happened to him that embedded star energy into his body on a structural level. Two, he is naturally sensitive to star energy in a way I have not encountered before. Three, there is something wrong that I do not have enough information to categorize yet.*
*Option three is the one I keep returning to.*
*He said he knew. He said something is not right and he has known for some time. He did not say more than that and I agreed to wait.*
*His heartbeat through the Covenant thread has been steady all day. I notice I check it more often than I need to. I am noting this as a fact without an interpretation yet.*
*Write it down. All of it.*
She spent the rest of that day thinking about what the thread had shown her.
Not obsessively. She had trained herself years ago to hold unresolved problems in the peripheral part of her attention rather than the central part, which meant she could continue functioning normally while a portion of her processing worked on the question in the background. She was aware of it the way you were aware of a low-grade sound: present, noted, not demanding immediate engagement.
What she kept returning to was the quality of the response.
Starbinding thread responded to different things in different ways. Active Star Wounds produced a bright reactive pull, the thread drawn toward the energy source. Healing-stage wounds produced a gentler response, more diffuse, a warmth rather than a pull. Hollow Stars produced a specific jitter in the thread that she had learned to recognize immediately. Starshard residue on surfaces produced a dull reactive glow.
What the thread had produced when it touched his skin was none of those things.
It was closest, she thought, to the response she got when threading into a very old sealed wound: something that had been closed for a long time but that still held the memory of what it had been. A trace of origin rather than active energy. As though whatever was inside him had been there long enough to become structural.
This did not fit any category in her training.
That evening she went through her field reference texts, the slim volumes she carried in her kit specifically for unusual field situations. She found nothing that exactly described what she had observed. She found several partial descriptions that did not quite fit. She wrote in the field journal:
*The thread response is most similar to the response when threading into a sealed old wound: structural rather than active, integrated rather than foreign. As though whatever it is has been there long enough to be part of him rather than something that happened to him.*
*Except that he said: I know something is not right. Which suggests he is aware of it as foreign. As something that was done, not something he was born with.*
*These two observations are in tension. I do not yet know how to resolve the tension.*
She had been writing for nearly an hour when she became aware of his presence at the edge of the firelight. He had not made a sound. He was simply there, in the way he tended to be: arrived without announcement, present without requiring acknowledgment.
“You’re working late,” he said.
“I’m trying to find a category for what I observed today,” she said. “I haven’t found one.”
He sat down across the fire from her, at the edge of the camp light, and looked at the dark beyond it. “When did it start?” she asked. “The response in the thread. Do you know?”
A long pause. Not the considering pause. Something deeper. “Five years ago,” he said. “After the ritual.”
She held the pen still on the journal page. Five years ago. The ritual. Mirael Sorne, who had not died the way everyone said. The hair that had turned white and the shadow that had almost disappeared.
“You don’t have to tell me more,” she said carefully. “Not tonight.”
He looked at her across the fire. His face in the firelight was different from his face in daylight: warmer, which was strange for a man who was not particularly warm in the conventional sense, but fire was not conventional light and it found different things.
“Sometime,” he said. Not a promise. A possibility he was leaving open.
“Sometime,” she agreed.
They sat in the firelight for a while without speaking, which was the kind of silence she was coming to understand as specifically theirs.
The northern light changed by late afternoon.
It was not dramatic. The sky did not shift color or the temperature drop sharply. It was subtler than that: the quality of the silver from the Star Veins became denser, more present, the kind of light that had weight to it. She had read descriptions of this in the expedition reports from previous Starfall seasons but reading descriptions and standing inside the phenomenon were different experiences.
She stopped walking for a moment and looked up.
The Star Veins directly above them were moving faster than the ones she had been watching for the past several days. Not rushing, but urgent, the silver light traveling along the cracks in the sky with a sense of directed purpose. She had seen this in city conditions when a Star Wound was opening nearby: the Veins responded to active energy below by moving toward it, drawn by the same forces that drew the falling stars themselves.
Here, they were moving toward north. Which meant the energy source was north of them.
Which they already knew. But seeing the Veins confirm it was different from knowing it abstractly.
She became aware of Caelan standing beside her. She had not heard him approach, which she was still adjusting to: the fact that he moved silently was operational information she had filed on day one, but the adjusting was a longer process.
“They’re faster here,” she said.
“Yes.”
“Responding to something further north.”
“Yes.” He was looking at the sky with the same attention she had been using, the systematic kind. “I’ve watched this on previous patrols. The Veins in this region always move north, even when there’s no active Starfall. As though there’s a permanent draw.”
She thought about the machine beneath the cathedral. About intake channels. About the advance Starfall notations.
“A permanent draw,” she repeated.
“That’s what it looks like to me. I don’t know enough about star mechanics to say what causes it.”
“I might,” she said. “I’ll tell you tonight.”
He looked at her with the between-the-modes quality. Then nodded once, which was his version of: I received that, I am holding it, I will wait.
The unit moved on north.
That evening, by the camp fire, she told him what Maren had found. She told it plainly and completely, the structural surveys and the energy logs and the notation system and the memory-weight unit of measure. She watched his face as she spoke, which was as still as always but carrying, she thought, more behind the stillness than usual.
When she finished, he was quiet for a long time.
“The memories spent in Starbinding rituals,” he said slowly. “They go into the machine.”
“That’s what the intake logs indicate.”
“And the machine runs the city’s light.”
“That’s my current understanding.”
Another long silence. She let it be. Some information needed a certain amount of silence around it before it could be properly received.
“The Nightwardens protect the Starbinders,” he said finally. “We protect the rituals. We have always been told we are protecting the people and the city.” He stopped. “We have been protecting the machine’s supply chain.”
She did not soften it. “That may be what the institution has been doing. I don’t think any individual Nightwarden has known that.”
“No.” He was looking at the fire. “They haven’t.”
They sat by the fire for a while longer. His heartbeat through the Covenant thread was steady, which she was finding she checked when she was uncertain about his state and could not read his face. Steady meant whatever he was feeling he was managing it. She understood this kind of management from the inside.
She wrote in the journal that night:
*I told him. He received it in silence and then said: we have been protecting the machine’s supply chain. This is the most precise summary of the situation I have heard.*
*His heartbeat was steady throughout. I am learning to read the difference between steady-because-nothing-is-wrong and steady-because-he-is-managing-something-that-is-wrong. This was the second kind.*
*Write it down. All of it. Trust the journal more than you trust your own capacity to hold things.*
The night settled into its rhythms around the camp. The first watch rotation completed and the second began. The Star Veins ran their measured silver above the treeline. She wrote in the journal until the writing was done and then she sat and listened to the sounds of the northern territory: wind through the remaining trees, the faint singing of the Veins when the temperature dropped, the occasional movement of something far off in the dark that was probably animal and not Star-touched.
She had been afraid, before departure, that she would find the northern territory oppressive. She had expected the active Starfall zone to feel hostile in some sustained way, the star energy pressing in, the Hollowing risk making every moment a kind of managed vigilance.
It was not like that.
The territory had a quality she was still working to name. Vast, certainly, and active in the ways she had prepared for, but not hostile. More like: indifferent. The stars fell here not because they intended harm but because this was what stars did, and the fact that their falling had consequences for the living things below was not something the stars had any awareness of or interest in. There was something almost clarifying about that indifference. The danger was real but it was not personal.
She could work with impersonal danger. It was the personal kind she had always found harder.
His heartbeat through the thread was steady in the way it was always steady, the rhythm she had already half-memorized without intending to. She had been checking it less consciously and more habitually over the past several days, which she noted as a change in her relationship to the information it provided. It had moved from data-I-am-collecting to something more like: a known constant. A point of reference.
She wrote:
*Each day further north the territory becomes more itself. Less like the territory adjacent to the city and more like the thing the city was built to keep at a distance. I find I do not mind it. I find that I mind the distance less than I expected to.*
*His heartbeat is a constant I did not know I was going to rely on. I am noting that I rely on it.*
*Write it all down. Write what is true while it is true.*
The fire had burned down to coals. She banked it for the night and returned to her sleeping area within the camp perimeter, the small organized space she had arranged on the first day and maintained since. The field journal went under the pack that served as a pillow. The thread supplies were checked and secured. The Covenant thread on her wrist was present and warm.
She lay on her back and looked at the Star Veins through the gap in the tree canopy overhead. They were bright tonight, brighter than the previous nights, which indicated elevated Starfall energy in the region. She made a mental note to check the ambient readings in the morning before the unit moved out.
The readings would probably confirm what she already suspected: they were getting close to the active zone’s core. The energy levels would increase from here. The risks would increase from here. The demands on her Starbinding would increase from here, which meant the memory costs would increase from here.
She had made her peace with this before departure. She had made her peace with it again on the road. She would make her peace with it again tomorrow if she needed to. This was how you handled things that could not be changed: not once, not dramatically, but repeatedly and practically, each time the weight of it came back to you.
His heartbeat through the thread was slow and steady. She thought he might be asleep.
She closed her eyes.
She thought: I am further north than I have ever been, further into danger than I have ever been, connected to a man I did not know two weeks ago by a thread I can feel in my sleep.
She thought: I am, despite all of that, not afraid.
She thought: I should probably examine why I am not afraid.
She thought: tomorrow.
She slept.
You've reached the end of this chapter
