The flat smelled of old stone and someone else's years.
This was not unpleasant — it had the specific quality of buildings in the Old Quarter that had been continuously inhabited for decades, the accumulated ambient of many lives conducted in the same rooms, a smell that was neither the guesthouse's impersonality nor the workshop's particular character of wood and linseed oil and the mineral edge of tools. It was something she would make her own over time. She understood this about spaces: they yielded to the people who occupied them, gradually, through the accumulation of presence.
She was unpacking the third box when he knocked.
She did not know it was him before she opened the door — she was expecting the building's owner, who had said she might stop by to check that the heating was working. But she had come to know the quality of his knock over four months of evenings, the specific even rhythm of it, and she recognized it a fraction before the door swung open.
He was holding a small paper-wrapped package.
She stepped back. He came in.
He looked around the flat with the quality of attention he brought to new acoustic spaces — not social attention, but the specific technical interest of someone who was simultaneously receiving the visual and acoustic information and processing both. She had watched him do this at the Moonlight Atrium and in every room she had described to him, but she had not seen him do it in her space before.
She set the box down.
He unwrapped the paper package on the flat's kitchen counter — unhurried, precise, the way he unwrapped everything — and set a honey jar on the surface. Same weight and color as the one in her workshop corner. Same local honey from the Old Quarter market that had been appearing on her corner shelf for months.
"For the kitchen," he said.
She looked at the honey jar. She looked at him.
He was already moving through the flat's main room with the focused economy of someone taking inventory, pausing at the window that faced the rooftops.
"May I?" he said.
"Yes," she said.
He moved through the space methodically: the window first, then each wall in sequence, then the ceiling — he looked up at the ceiling for a moment with the specific tilt that she associated with him calculating reverb. She watched him and did not say anything, because he was doing what he did and it was best received in silence.
He stood in the center of the room.
"Ceiling height is good," he said. "Stone walls will absorb more than the workshop — less reverb, but the mid-range will be warmer. The corner there—" he indicated the northeast corner "—will give you the best low-register response. The window alcove will be brighter, higher mid-range. Depends what you need for the piece."
She looked at the two positions he had indicated.
"Can I test it?" she said.
She had the Daegum in its case in the bedroom — she had unpacked the instrument first, as she always did when she moved anywhere. She assembled it now, in the flat's main room, and stood in the northeast corner and played a single long note.
The acoustic was different from the workshop. He was right: warmer, more enclosed, the stone walls receiving the sound and returning it without the workshop's slight metallic edge. Not better or worse. Different. The bamboo's resonance was present here in a way that felt more private.
She played a phrase from the grandmother's repertoire.
He said: "Pale gold holds. Slightly warmer than the workshop."
She lowered the instrument. She looked at him.
"Warmer," she said.
"The stone is older," he said. "It holds heat differently."
She stood in her flat — the boxes half-unpacked, the walls bare, the surfaces empty except for the honey jar on the kitchen counter — and looked at the man who had just assessed her acoustic environment with the same quality of attention he brought to commission specifications.
"I've never lived somewhere where the acoustic properties were evaluated before I unpacked," she said.
He looked at the northeast corner. "It's relevant information."
"It is," she agreed. "Where would you put the practice position?"
"Depends what you're practicing for. The northeast corner for compositions — the warmth will encourage the sound to develop inward, which is good for writing. The window alcove for performance preparation — the brightness will keep you honest about projection."
She considered this. "Can you help me figure out furniture placement? With the acoustic in mind?"
He looked around the room. "What furniture do you have?"
"It arrives tomorrow," she said. "I have a list."
He held out his hand for the list. She went to find it in the second box. When she came back he was looking at the ceiling again.
They spent an hour moving through the flat with the furniture list and the acoustic assessment simultaneously — him indicating positions, explaining the resonance logic, her asking questions and occasionally disagreeing on the basis of her own playing experience. It was the most domestic conversation they had had, and it was conducted entirely in the language of acoustic physics and instrument positioning.
She found that she did not want it to end.
At the end of the hour he stood at the flat door with the acoustic map they had drafted on a piece of paper from one of her boxes. He held it out to her.
"Thank you," she said. "For the honey jar. And for this."
He looked at the map.
"The northeast corner," he said, "is directly above my grandfather's old material storage. The stone is the same as the workshop floor." He paused. "It will receive the 432Hz cleanly. You'll feel the resonance through the floor when you play there."
She held this information.
"You noticed that," she said. "The structural connection."
"The building is continuous," he said. "The walls are the same stone."
She looked at the floor beneath her feet — the same stone as the workshop, a meter and a half below.
"I'll be connected to the workshop through the floor," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She looked at him standing in her doorway — the workshop behind him, three steps in the other direction. The alley between his building and hers was not quite an alley, just the narrow gap between two buildings in the Old Quarter that had been built before the concept of alley existed.
"Thank you for coming," she said.
He looked at the honey jar on the kitchen counter. "It's for the kitchen," he said, and went back to his workshop.
She stood in the center of her flat for a while after he left, the acoustic map in one hand and the Daegum still assembled in the other, and listened to the quality of the silence in the stone-walled room that was connected to his workshop through the floor.
She stood in the northeast corner and played a long note.
The 432Hz settled into her temporal bone.
Below her feet, the same stone that held the workshop's decades of careful work received it.
She stood there for a long time, playing the frequency into the building's bones, until the room had absorbed enough of it to begin to be hers.
---
The furniture arrived the next morning.
She had ordered the minimum: a bed, a small table, two chairs, a bookshelf for the music notebooks and reference materials, a practice stand for the Daegum. Nothing unnecessary, nothing that would complicate the acoustic she had mapped with Riku the previous day.
The delivery people were efficient and gone by ten. She spent the afternoon arranging things according to the map, which she had propped against the wall while she worked. The northeast corner stayed clear — she had not planned any furniture there before Riku identified it, and now it was specifically, deliberately clear. Her practice position.
She sat on the floor of the northeast corner after the furniture was placed and played for twenty minutes.
The acoustic was what he had described: warmer than the workshop, the mid-range fuller, the sound staying close rather than dispersing. It was a room for writing, for working things out, for the music that did not yet know what it was.
She played the unnamed piece she had been developing since competition day — or rather the earlier version of it, before it had become *The Same Place, Differently.* The beginning, the part that asked the question. In this room the question sounded different: not out into a large space but inward, into the stone.
She played until the afternoon shifted toward evening.
Then she got up and walked three steps and knocked on the workshop door.
---
The routine that developed over the first two weeks was not arranged. It simply emerged, the way the workshop evenings had emerged over five months of showing up at the same time: through repetition and accumulated presence, the specific accretion of ordinary moments that constituted the actual fabric of being with another person.
Mornings were hers. She practiced in the flat, in the northeast corner, from seven to ten. She worked on the new compositions, managed the arts council reporting, answered correspondence from Korea. She made tea in the kitchen with the honey jar on the counter and the window showing the Old Quarter rooftops and the specific quality of autumn light she had been living inside for four months.
At ten, sometimes, she walked three steps and knocked. If he was in a phase of work that required no disruption — assembly, the fine adjustments that needed unbroken attention — he would indicate this at the door and she would go back to the flat. If he was at a stage that could accommodate the presence of another person, she came in and practiced in her corner while he worked.
This arrangement had not been negotiated. It had been understood.
Evenings were the workshop. Eight o'clock, as they had always been. But the quality had changed: there was no separation now between the workshop person and the flat person. She had only one life in this part of Aegis Port, and it was continuous.
She noticed things in the first weeks that she had not been positioned to notice before.
She noticed that he ate dinner before she arrived — around seven, quickly, without much ceremony. She had known this in the abstract from the food patterns she had observed. Now she noticed it because she could hear the kitchen sounds from the flat if both windows were open, which they usually were in the late afternoon.
She noticed that he was in the workshop by five in the morning, always, and that the quality of his working sounds at five was different from his working sounds at ten: more exploratory, less decisive, the sounds of someone thinking with their hands before the day had given them something to respond to.
She noticed that he stopped working when she played the grandmother's piece, regardless of what he was in the middle of. This was something she had known from the sessions. In the new proximity she felt it differently — the cessation of the tool sounds, the specific quality of his attention shifting even through the stone wall.
She did not mention any of these observations to him. She filed them, the way he filed the color data: precisely, for keeping.
---
On the fourteenth day she found herself in the flat at five in the morning, awake without particular reason, and she could hear — faintly, through the stone floor — the sounds of the workshop.
She lay in bed and listened to the quality of it: the early-morning work sounds, the exploratory phase, the thinking-with-hands before the day had taken its shape. She had not known these sounds from the guesthouse. She knew them now.
She lay there for a while and thought about what it meant to be able to hear someone working through the floor at five in the morning, and about how this was either unbearably close or exactly the right distance, and about how the distinction between those two things was something she had spent a long time not being able to assess, and about how she now knew with complete clarity that this was exactly the right distance.
She got up and made tea.
She went to the northeast corner and played, quietly, in the flat's predawn warmth, and below her feet the stone transmitted the 432Hz into the building's continuous structure, and somewhere in that structure, a meter and a half below and three steps to the left, someone was working at a bench in the amber lamplight.
The same building.
The same stone.
Three steps.
She called her mother that week.
Her mother asked about the flat and she described it: the stone walls, the Old Quarter rooftops from the window, the acoustic that was warmer than the workshop, the northeast corner where she practiced.
Her mother asked if she was comfortable there.
She thought about comfortable — the specific word, what it meant. The flat was not yet fully hers. There were boxes she had not opened. The walls were bare. The bookshelf held only the notebooks she had brought from the guesthouse.
But she was comfortable in the way that mattered: she knew where she was. She knew the building's sounds at five in the morning and the quality of the light at ten and the stone's specific acoustic character and the fact that three steps to the left, through the wall and slightly down, someone was doing careful work in a lamp's amber circle.
"Yes," she told her mother. "I'm comfortable."
Her mother said: "Is he close?"
"Three steps," she said.
Her mother was quiet for a moment.
"Good," her mother said.
They talked about the school and the arts council disbursement timeline and her younger cousin's music school application. They talked about her father's health, which was good. They talked about the new year visit, which was planned. They talked about ordinary things, the currency of a family that was intact and functioning and managing the distance between its members with the patient attention that distance required.
When the call ended she sat in the northeast corner of the flat with the Daegum in her lap and did not play immediately. She sat in the room's morning warmth and thought about her grandmother, who had played in a room like this one, and about her mother, who had spent decades running a school in her grandmother's memory, and about the chain of care and music and teaching that had led her to this specific stone room in this specific port city on this specific ordinary morning.
The chain was intact.
The chain had brought her here.
She picked up the Daegum and played.
---
Riku told her about the acoustic connection through the building on the third day.
She had not mentioned that she could hear the workshop sounds through the floor. She had been holding this observation, not yet certain what to do with it, uncertain whether to mention it at all. He told her himself, standing in her flat doorway on a Wednesday morning, the way he mentioned the things that were relevant without waiting to be asked.
"The stone transmits sound longitudinally," he said. "Through the building structure. If you play in the northeast corner, the 432Hz will register in the workshop floor."
She looked at him.
"You can feel it?" she said.
"Not clearly. More like a memory of the frequency — the building has been absorbing it for months from the workshop side. But yes. It registers."
She stood in her flat and thought about the 432Hz traveling through the stone — from her temporal bone to the bamboo to the air to the stone floor to the building's structure down and across to the workshop floor, the same frequency her grandmother had calibrated into this bamboo across fifty years of playing.
"My grandmother's frequency," she said. "In the building."
He looked at the floor. "Yes," he said. "In the stone."
She looked at him. He was looking at the floor with the specific quality of someone who has just said something that contains more than it appears to on the surface, and is aware of this, and is not going to elaborate but is also not going to take it back.
She said: "Thank you for telling me."
He said: "It's relevant information."
She said: "It is."
He went back to the workshop.
She went to the northeast corner and played the 432Hz into the stone and thought about grandmothers and calibration and buildings that held frequencies in their structure long after the people who had generated them were gone.
She thought about what it meant that Riku's workshop floor held this frequency now.
She thought: the building knows.
She played for a long time, sending the frequency down through the stone, and somewhere below her the workshop floor received it, and the workshop was the workshop, and the building was the building, and three steps was exactly the right distance.
At eight o'clock that evening she knocked and he opened the door and the pale gold appeared — warmer than the workshop's usual, she would discover later he had noted this in the acoustic notebook: *evening pale gold has shifted warmer since she moved in next door. Possible influence of the building's increased 432Hz ambient from the flat.* She did not know this yet. She knew only that the workshop felt different since she had moved three steps away — not larger or smaller, just more present to itself, as if the building's understanding of what it was for had sharpened.
She played. He worked. The lamp burned. Outside the autumn city was becoming winter, the harbor winds strengthening, the Old Quarter's stones holding the cold that would not fully arrive for another month.
Inside: the workshop, the lamp, the two stools, the bench between them, and outside the door and three steps to the left, a flat with a honey jar on the kitchen counter and a practice position in the northeast corner where the 432Hz traveled down through the stone.
Ordinary time.
She was already there.
