He played the shamisen every night now.
This had become its own routine — after the evening workshop session, after she had gone back to the flat, in the late hour when the commission work was set aside and the lamp burned and the city outside had reduced to the harbor sounds and the occasional footstep in the alley. He played for thirty minutes, sometimes forty-five. He played through the traditional pieces he had memorized at twelve and fourteen and seventeen, before the Synesthesia had made playing in front of others unmanageable. He played things his grandfather had played. He played things he was beginning to compose himself.
He had been composing for the shamisen for two weeks.
He had not composed before. He had designed — the design of instruments was a form of composition, he had always understood this, the specific decisions that made an instrument's acoustic character its own and not any other instrument's. But he had not written music. He was writing music now, in the late evenings, in the thirty to forty-five minutes after the workshop sessions, with the commission work behind him and the shamisen in his hands.
The compositions were, he understood, about the same things *The Same Place, Differently* was about.
He did not tell her this. He played them alone in the workshop at eleven, and the color they generated in his Synesthesia was the specific warm amber of his own genuine feeling, the color he had not seen from himself since his grandfather was alive.
---
On a Wednesday she came back for her notebook.
She had left it on the corner surface — she did this sometimes, when the notebook felt like it belonged to the workshop rather than to the flat, when the material in it was specific to this room. He had developed the habit of not moving it when she left it.
He was playing the shamisen when she knocked.
He heard the knock and stopped.
She said, through the door: "I forgot the notebook. I can come back—"
"Come in," he said.
She came in. She looked at the shamisen. She looked at him.
"I heard it from outside," she said.
He held the shamisen.
"From the alley?" he said.
"From the alley. Before I knocked." She stood at the door. She did not come further in — she was giving him room to decide. "I was listening for about four minutes."
He looked at the shamisen in his hands. He thought about four minutes of listening without announcing. He thought about her at the door in the alley, receiving the shamisen through the wood and stone of the Old Quarter evening.
He thought: she already heard it. The decision is already made.
"Sit down," he said.
She came to her stool. She sat.
He played.
He played not the scales or the traditional pieces he had been working through but the new compositions — the things he had been writing in the late evenings for two weeks, the shamisen music that was about the same things her composition was about. He played them in sequence, without pausing between, four of them that made a small suite of pieces he did not have a title for yet.
He played to the end of the fourth piece and let the last note sustain and fade.
The workshop was quiet.
He set the shamisen on the bench.
She said: "How long have you been composing?"
"Two weeks," he said.
"What are they about?"
He looked at the shamisen. He said: "What *The Same Place, Differently* is about. The arriving."
She was very still.
"You've been composing about the same thing I was composing about," she said.
"Yes."
"At the same time."
"Yes."
She held this.
"We were composing toward each other," she said.
He had not thought of it in those terms. He thought of it now. Two people in adjacent rooms — across three steps, across a wall — writing music about the same arrival from different directions.
"Yes," he said. "I think so."
She looked at the shamisen. She looked at him.
"Have you played these for anyone?" she said.
"No," he said. "Tonight is the first time."
"Why tonight?"
He said: "Because you were listening before I knew you were there. Because you heard it before I chose to share it. That seemed like the right way for it to happen — you receiving something I hadn't managed yet."
She was quiet.
Then: "Play the fourth one again."
He picked up the shamisen.
He played the fourth piece — the shortest, the slowest, the one he thought of as the rest in the arrived place, though he had not used those words, had not yet connected his composition vocabulary with hers.
When he finished she said: "That's *Coda II.*"
He looked at the shamisen.
"I wrote it at the same time you wrote it," he said.
"We wrote the same four bars," she said.
He was quiet. Then: "Different instruments. Same frequency."
The workshop held them.
She picked up the shamisen notation book — he had been sketching the pieces in a small book on the right side of the bench, the book she had not previously noticed. She looked at the fourth piece's notation.
She looked at her own notation in the red notebook.
She set both on the bench side by side.
They were not identical — the shamisen and the Daegum had different registers, different characters, the notation reflected different instruments. But the shape of the four bars was the same: the same rhythmic duration, the same movement from a question to a rest, the same quality of presence in the final note.
She said: "We should play them together."
He said: "Yes."
She assembled the Daegum. He held the shamisen. They played *Coda II* — her version and his version simultaneously, the Daegum's bamboo warmth and the shamisen's string resonance finding the same place from different approaches, the two instruments speaking from the whole body without competing.
The pale gold in his visual field was amber throughout — the fullest, warmest version of it, the color that had no boundary because there was no longer a boundary to have.
They played the four bars.
The last note faded.
The workshop was very quiet.
She said: "That's the title."
He: "What title?"
She: "*Different Instruments, Same Frequency.*"
He looked at the shamisen. He looked at her.
"Yes," he said. "That's what it is."
She put the Daegum in its case. She picked up the red notebook. She stood at the door.
"Same time tomorrow," she said.
"Same time," he said.
She went out. He heard three steps. He heard the flat door.
He sat with the shamisen in his hands in the workshop's lamplight and thought about four bars written simultaneously in two adjacent rooms from the same arrived place.
He thought: she said *we should play them together.* She said *we.* Like it was already decided, like it had always been decided, like the only question was when.
He picked up the shamisen.
He played *Coda II* again, alone this time, in the late workshop quiet.
The amber was present.
He was home.
---
The following morning she came to the workshop at ten.
She set down her bag. She set down the Daegum. She looked at the shamisen notation book on the right side of the bench where he had left it.
"Can I look?" she said.
He stepped back from the bench.
She picked up the notation book and looked through it — not the fourth piece, all of them. He watched her read the notations with the specific quality of a musician reading another musician's work: following the phrasing, hearing the notes in her mind, understanding the intention behind the choices.
She set it down.
"Four pieces," she said.
"Yes."
"All about the same thing."
"Yes."
She picked up her Daegum. "Play the first one," she said. "I want to hear them in sequence."
He picked up the shamisen.
He played through the four compositions again, in sequence, while she listened. She had the Daegum assembled and resting against her knee but she did not play — she was receiving first, the way she always received before she responded.
When he finished the fourth piece she picked up the Daegum.
"Again," she said. "From the beginning. This time I'll play alongside."
He looked at her.
"You don't have the notation for the Daegum parts," he said.
"I don't need it," she said. "Play and I'll find the line."
He played.
She found the line — not immediately on the first piece, which took her two bars to settle into, but by the second bar she was with him, the Daegum responding to the shamisen's phrases, not doubling them but running alongside, finding the complementary register, the bamboo warmth against the string resonance.
They played through all four.
The workshop held the sound.
When the fourth piece ended they sat in the quiet.
"The second piece," she said. "The modulation in the third phrase."
"Yes," he said.
"That's the moment in *The Same Place, Differently* where the piece turns outward — the question being asked more directly." She looked at the notation. "You wrote the same moment."
He had not known this. He had not heard *The Same Place, Differently* as a structural analysis — he had heard it as music. But she was right: the modulation in the third phrase of his second piece and the outward movement in the second section of her composition were the same moment described in different instruments.
"We were writing the same piece," he said.
"Different instruments," she said. "Same frequency."
He looked at the shamisen. He looked at her.
"This should be performed together," he said.
"Yes," she said. "When the time is right."
"The new year?" he said.
She looked at him.
"The school's winter recital," she said. "I was going to perform *The Same Place, Differently* as a solo. If you came—" She stopped. She started again. "If you came to Korea for the winter recital. We could premiere both pieces together."
He held the shamisen.
He had not been to Korea. He had barely been outside the Old Quarter in six years. Korea was — the concept was large in the way that any place outside the workshop was large, requiring navigation, acoustic management, the specific managed presence in the world that cost more than the workshop's contained quiet.
He looked at her.
She was not asking with the quality of someone who expected yes. She was asking with the quality of someone who understood what the question cost and was asking anyway because the opportunity was real and she wanted him there.
"Tell me about the recital," he said.
She told him: the school's winter program, held in the main performance hall, approximately eighty audience members, traditional instruments, students and teachers and a handful of invited guests. A small venue — smaller than the Moonlight Atrium. Stone walls, good acoustic.
"The hall's reverb?" he said.
"Similar to this building," she said. "Old stone. About one-second decay."
He thought about this.
He said: "I would need the floor plan."
She looked at him.
"You're considering it," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze for a moment. Then she took out her phone and sent him the school's contact information. "I'll have them send you the hall specifications," she said.
He put the shamisen on the bench. He looked at the commission work. He looked at her.
"Different instruments, same frequency," he said.
"Yes," she said.
"We should play it together," he said. "If I'm going to Korea, we should play it there."
She smiled — the full one, the one that appeared rarely and changed the quality of the room when it appeared.
"Yes," she said. "We should."
---
He spent the afternoon researching Korean transit from Aegis Port and the acoustic specifications of the school's performance hall and the specific acoustic management requirements for a small venue with eighty audience members.
He had the floor plan by the following morning.
He looked at it and understood that it was manageable. Not easy — no public performance space was easy. But manageable, with the right preparation, with the headphones and the route research and the specific knowledge of the hall's acoustic character that the floor plan provided.
He wrote back to the school contact: *I will attend. Please send full technical specifications for the performance hall including seating arrangement and proximity of first row to stage.*
He sent the email.
He looked at the commission work on the bench.
He thought about Korea and about the winter recital and about playing the shamisen compositions alongside her Daegum in the school that her grandmother had founded, in front of eighty people, in a stone hall with one-second decay.
He picked up the commission tool.
He had preparation to do.
She told him about the twenty minutes that evening.
He had said: *you played sixty sessions. I played twenty minutes.* She had said: *the twenty minutes counted more.* He had not understood this at the time — had received it and filed it for later examination, the way he received many things from her.
He understood it now.
He had played the shamisen in this workshop before his grandfather died. He had played it well, competently, with genuine attention to the music. His grandfather had listened. But there had been no audience in the sense she was describing — no one who received the playing with the specific quality of someone for whom it mattered in a personal rather than a musical way.
She had listened to twenty minutes through a closed door in the alley before he knew she was there.
She had received it as if it were the most important thing she had heard in a long time.
He thought about the difference between playing well and playing for someone.
He had been building instruments for twenty years so that other people could play for other people. He had been the craftsman, invisible in the conduit. The shamisen had been on the wall for three years because there was no one for whom the playing had meaning.
She made the playing have meaning.
He had not known this was what was missing until it was present.
He sat with this for a while, in the workshop's late evening quiet, the commission work done for the day, the shamisen on the bench beside him.
Then he picked up the shamisen and played — not the compositions, something older, something his grandfather had played on autumn evenings when the workshop was closed and the day's careful work was behind them. He played it through once, slowly, giving each phrase the space it required.
The amber was present.
He played it again.
Below his feet, through the stone floor, the building transmitted the sound — not the shamisen's frequencies in the same way the Daegum's 432Hz transmitted, but something. The building's response to being used fully. The stone receiving what it had been receiving, in various forms, for decades.
He thought: the twenty minutes counted because she was there for the right reason.
He thought: she is always there for the right reason.
He set the shamisen on the wall.
He went to bed.
In the morning he would work on the commission and she would come at ten and at eight in the evening she would knock and the pale gold would appear, and this was ordinary time, and ordinary time was the most important time, and he had not understood this before now.
The floor plan of the school's performance hall arrived the following afternoon.
He read it three times, as he read all technical documents: for structure first, then for specific details, then for the gap between what was needed and what was present. The hall was smaller than the Moonlight Atrium — eighty seats, stone walls with textile treatment on the lateral surfaces to control reverb, a stage approximately four meters wide and three deep.
The stage was too close to the first row by his initial assessment. Three meters between stage front and first row — close enough that the audience's breathing and movement would register in his Synesthesia during a performance.
He noted this.
He wrote to the school contact: *Is it possible to seat the first two rows at five meters from the stage? I'm doing acoustic planning and the close proximity may affect instrument projection.*
The school contact replied within the hour: *We can accommodate this. Any other requirements?*
He thought about what other requirements he had.
He wrote: *Can you send the program running order? I'd like to know at what point in the evening our performance falls.*
He received the running order. Their performance — the premiere of both pieces, performed together — was third from last. A position he would not have chosen for himself: late enough in the program that the audience would be settled and attentive, but also late enough that the accumulated Synesthesia load from the earlier performances would be present.
He thought about this.
He wrote in the working notebook: *Korea: three weeks from now. Performance hall specifications adequate. First row reseat requested. Running order: third from last. Synesthesia load will be manageable if seated at adequate distance. The pale gold will be present during the joint performance — this has been true at the Moonlight Atrium and in the workshop. The pale gold is the management.*
He looked at the last line.
He had been managing the Synesthesia for twenty-four years. He had used techniques and headphones and distance and the careful architecture of his daily life. He had never, before five months ago, had a specific person's sound as part of the management toolkit.
The pale gold was the management.
He closed the notebook.
He sent a final message to the school contact: *I'll attend. Looking forward to the program.*
He set the phone down and looked at the commission work on the bench.
Korea. A school his grandmother had founded and his grandfather's frequency had been calibrating into this bamboo since 1890. A performance hall with stone walls and textile treatment and eighty seats and a stage three meters from the first row, which would now be five meters from the first row.
He and Chae-won would play *Different Instruments, Same Frequency* and *The Same Place, Differently* together, in front of her family and her students and her school.
He was, he thought, going to need to practice.
He picked up the shamisen and played through the compositions again.
You've reached the end of this chapter
He played the shamisen every night now.
