They practiced the joint program for a week.
Every evening after the standard session ended, they played *Different Instruments, Same Frequency* and *The Same Place, Differently* together. Not rehearsing in the performance sense — there was no choreography to arrange, no stage blocking to work out, no technical coordination of the kind that a formal performance required. They were simply playing the pieces they had each written, letting the two instruments find their way alongside each other the way they had found it the first time in the workshop.
The workshop was the rehearsal space.
The workshop was also the performance space, in a way — the original performance, the one that had been ongoing for eight months, the music that had been made in this room and nowhere else. Korea would be the first time it left these walls, the first time the pale gold would be in a room with an audience other than the stone and the lamp.
He was thinking about this on the seventh evening of joint practice, listening to the way the two instruments had learned to be in the same space — the shamisen's mid-register finding room beside the Daegum's lower warmth, neither crowding the other, both fully themselves.
She lowered the Daegum.
"Are you ready?" she said.
He set the shamisen on the bench.
He thought about the answer. He thought about what ready meant in this context — not the management preparation, the floor plan and the first row at five meters and the headphone assessment and the route to the school. Those he had done. He was ready in those senses.
He thought about standing on the stage in the school his grandmother had funded. He thought about her parents in the audience. He thought about playing his grandfather's shamisen in the hall that his grandfather's frequency had been building toward for a century.
He said: "Yes. I'm ready."
She looked at him.
"Not nervous?" she said.
"Nervous is not the right word," he said. "I'm—" He thought about how to say it accurately. "I'm aware that it's important. I'm not afraid of important things."
She held his gaze for a moment.
"No," she said. "You're not."
She assembled the Daegum. She played the grandmother's piece — not the joint compositions, just this, the true north, the return to the beginning.
He listened.
He thought about the stage in Korea and about the pale gold in the school's stone hall and about standing beside her in front of the people who had known her since before she was a musician and who had watched her become one and who had seen the school funded and the competition placed and the composition finished.
He would be there.
They would play *Different Instruments, Same Frequency.*
The grandmother's frequency, carried in the bamboo across a century of playing, transmitted through his prototype into her temporal bone, and now: the shamisen his grandfather had left half-finished for three years until the right person arrived to complete what it had been waiting to become.
*Different instruments.*
*Same frequency.*
He picked up the shamisen.
He played *Coda II* — the four bars, the rest in the arrived place — while she played the grandmother's piece.
The two pieces were not arranged to work together. They found their way together anyway, the shamisen's four bars settling into the Daegum's longer melody, the frequencies recognizing each other across the different instrumental registers.
The workshop was quiet when they finished.
She said: "That was new."
"Yes," he said.
"You played *Coda II* while I played the grandmother's piece."
"Yes."
"They work together."
"Yes."
She looked at him.
"We should do that at the recital," she said. "At the end. After the joint compositions. Play them together — the grandmother's piece and *Coda II.* Simultaneously."
He thought about this. "The pieces aren't arranged for it."
"They don't need to be arranged," she said. "They already know how."
He thought about the school's performance hall with the one-second decay and the first row at five meters and the eighty audience members and the stage four meters wide and three deep. He thought about the specific quality of playing the grandmother's piece in the hall where the grandmother had taught it, with the shamisen beside it, in front of the people who had received both pieces' separate histories.
"Yes," he said. "We should do that."
She smiled.
She set the Daegum down. She stood.
She walked to the main bench — to him. She stopped in front of him.
She put her hands on his face.
He put his hands in her hair.
They were in the workshop in the lamp's amber, with Korea in two days and the shamisen case on the bench and the completion certificate on the corner surface and the Daegum in its resting position and everything they had built across eight months in the walls around them.
She looked at him.
He looked at her.
She kissed him.
It was the first time. They had been moving toward it since the harbor-front when he had tucked her hair back, since the flat doorway when they had stood within three steps of each other in the winter dark, since the hands-on-face moments that had been accumulating like the amber at the edges of the pale gold — present, building, inevitable.
She kissed him and he kissed her back and they were in the workshop in the lamp's amber and the Old Quarter was outside doing its winter things and the building was the building and eight months of sessions and compositions and calibrations and waiting rooms and ordinary time had produced this: two people standing at the main bench of a workshop in a quiet alley, kissing for the first time, which was also not the first time, because it had been arriving for a very long while.
---
She pulled back.
She kept her hands on his face.
He kept his hands in her hair.
She said: "That's the one more thing."
He said: "The one more thing?"
She said: "*The Same Place, Differently.* I said there was one more thing the composition needed. The thing I'd know when I heard it." She looked at him. "This is it. This is what the composition was waiting for."
He looked at her.
He said: "The composition needed you to kiss me."
She said: "The composition needed the arrived place to be fully arrived."
He thought about this.
"And is it?" he said.
She looked at him with the full quality — present, warm, without any of the management she had arrived here carrying eight months ago.
"Yes," she said. "It is."
She lowered her hands. He lowered his.
She went to her corner. She picked up the Daegum. She played *The Same Place, Differently* from the beginning — all three sections and *Coda II* and now, at the end, something new: four bars that had no name yet, that were the thing that came after the arrived place, the music of being there and staying.
He sat at the bench and listened.
The pale gold was amber throughout. The workshop was the workshop.
When she finished she set the Daegum down.
She looked at him.
"New section," she said.
"I heard," he said.
"It doesn't have a name yet."
"It doesn't need one yet," he said.
She looked at the notation.
"No," she said. "Not yet."
She packed the Daegum.
She looked at the shamisen case.
"Korea in two days," she said.
"Korea in two days," he said.
She picked up her bag. She walked to the door.
She turned back.
She looked at him across the workshop — the bench between them, the lamp burning, everything exactly as it always was and completely different from how it had ever been before.
"Same time tomorrow," she said.
"Same time," he said.
She went out. Three steps. The flat door.
He sat in the workshop in the lamp's amber and the shamisen case was on the bench and Korea was in two days and the pale gold was present and the composition had a new section and everything was arriving.
He picked up the shamisen.
He played *Coda II.*
The workshop received it.
He was home.
---
She lay in the flat that night and thought about *the arrived place.*
She had used this phrase in the composition without fully knowing what it described. She had known the music was about arriving somewhere, about the return to the same place from a changed direction, about the thing that happened when you stopped asking what came next and simply stayed. She had not known, when she wrote the first section, what the arrived place would turn out to be.
She knew now.
The arrived place was the workshop at eight o'clock in the evening when the lamp was burning and the commission work was on the bench and the Daegum was in her hands and the person across the bench was the person she loved. It was also the flat three steps away and the morning practice and the ten o'clock knock and the walks to the transit hub and the hospital waiting rooms. It was the building's stone and the 432Hz traveling through the floor and the shamisen in its grandfather's case and the winter recital two days away.
The arrived place was this: two people who had been traveling toward each other from different directions, through different landscapes of difficulty and precision and careful work, and who had arrived.
She had kissed him.
He had kissed her back.
These were true things that had happened, and they had happened in the workshop in the lamp's amber with the Old Quarter outside doing its winter things, and the arrived place was now fully arrived, and the composition had a new section, and Korea was in two days.
She lay in the dark and listened to the harbor sounds and felt the specific quality of a person at rest after a long journey.
She was home.
---
The day before Korea was an ordinary day.
She practiced in the morning. He worked on the commission. At ten she knocked and he let her in and she played in the corner for an hour while he finished the violin assessment. At noon she went back to the flat and packed — the Daegum, the prototype in its travel case, the red notebook, the performance clothes, the practical things. She was practiced at packing now, having made the Korea trips every six weeks since the competition. She could pack in forty minutes.
She went to the workshop at eight.
He was at the commission bench with the shamisen case on the floor beside his stool — he had placed it there that morning, she saw, where she usually set her bag when she arrived. A small adjustment in the workshop's configuration: the shamisen case in the position usually occupied by her things.
She set her bag beside it.
They ate dinner. He had cooked — the same simple thing he cooked when she came without a task. She brought tea from the flat kitchen, the good honey from the upland apiaries.
They ate and talked about the recital program: the order of the compositions, the two pieces played simultaneously at the end, the specific acoustic challenges of the school hall versus the workshop. He had been in contact with the school's technical contact about the stage microphone setup. She had spoken to her parents about the first row.
Her parents knew he was coming.
Her father had called to say he was looking forward to meeting him.
She had told Riku this and he had been quiet for a long moment and then said: *I'll bring something.* She had asked what. He had said: *something I'm working on. A small commission. Something that belongs to that context.*
She had not asked further. She had learned that his surprises were worth waiting for.
After dinner she played the joint program through once — the full set, both compositions, ending with the simultaneous playing that they had decided on. He played beside her.
The workshop held the joint sound.
When they finished the workshop was very quiet.
She packed the Daegum.
He picked up the shamisen case.
They stood in the workshop with their respective packed instruments and the lamp burning and Korea in the morning.
She looked at him.
She put her hand against his face. He put his hand in her hair. They were in the arrived place and the arrived place was this room and also the flat and also Korea in the morning and also everywhere they would go from here.
She kissed him again.
He kissed her back.
Second time.
Also arrived.
She stepped back.
"Tomorrow," she said.
"Tomorrow," he said.
She went out. Three steps. The flat.
He stood in the workshop with the shamisen case in his hand and the pale gold at the edge of his visual field and Korea in the morning and thought: the work has been the work and the work has been good.
And the rest has been better.
He put the shamisen case by the workshop door.
He went to bed.
In the morning: Korea.
---
She woke early, as she always did before important days.
Five in the morning. The flat was dark and the harbor sounds were the harbor sounds and the building was the building. She lay for a while and listened to the workshop below — she could not hear anything specific at this hour, only the quality of the stone holding the night.
She thought about the day ahead: the morning train, the afternoon arrival, dinner with her parents, the next morning's rehearsal in the school hall, the evening's recital.
She thought about Riku on the train.
She had not traveled with him before. She had not been in the world with him in the sustained way of a shared journey — the transit hub they walked to together was a fifteen-minute walk, manageable. A multi-hour train journey was different. She had been thinking about this since they confirmed the Korea plan: what it would be like for him, what the right management looked like, what she could do and what she needed to let him manage.
She had asked him, two weeks ago: *what do you need from me, on the train?*
He had looked at her with the quality of someone who had been asked a question they had not expected.
He said: *tell me when something is going to be loud before it is. If you can.*
She said: *I can do that.*
He said: *and sit with me.*
She said: *yes.*
She had not needed to ask what he meant by that. She knew what he meant. Not performing company, not managing the experience for him, not being vigilant on his behalf in a way that would make the managing visible. Simply being there. Beside him. Present.
She lay in the flat and thought about sitting with him on the train, the harbor city moving past the windows, the specific quality of being in transit with another person you have learned to be near.
She got up.
She made tea.
She went to the northeast corner and played the grandmother's piece, quietly, in the predawn dark. The 432Hz traveled down through the stone. Below, in the workshop, the building received it — the same stone, the same transmission, the same frequency that had been in this bamboo since before she was born.
She played it through once.
Then she packed her remaining things and went to the workshop at six.
He was at the bench with the commission work — he had been there since five, as always, doing the early-morning exploratory work before the day had taken its shape. The shamisen case was by the door. His bag was there too.
He looked up when she came in.
She looked at the workshop.
She looked at the lamp burning in the early morning. The commission on the bench. The tools. The right wall with the instruments. The corner with the honey jar and the competition certificate and the red notebook.
She looked at the shamisen case by the door.
She looked at him.
"Ready?" she said.
He stood up from the bench. He picked up the shamisen case.
"Yes," he said.
They walked out of the workshop together. He locked the door.
The Old Quarter was quiet in the early morning. The harbor sounds were the harbor sounds. The winter light was beginning at the edges of the sky.
She walked beside him through the familiar streets — the market and the harbor front and the transit hub — and he had the headphones on his neck and the shamisen case in one hand and his bag over his shoulder and she had the Daegum and her bag.
At the transit hub he said: *the platform announcement will be loud.*
She said: *I'll tell you a few seconds before.*
He said: *good.*
They boarded the train.
She sat beside him.
The train left the station.
Aegis Port moved past the windows and then the harbor and then the city's edge and then the winter countryside, and he had the headphones on and the commission notebook open and she had the red notebook and they were in transit together for the first time, which was also not the first time, because they had been in transit together — moving in the same direction, toward the same destination — for eight months.
She wrote in the red notebook.
He wrote in the commission notebook.
The train moved through the winter landscape.
She thought: this is it. This is ordinary time. A train and two people and their respective notebooks and the instruments in the overhead storage and Korea ahead.
She thought: I am exactly where I need to be.
She was.
He looked out the train window at the winter countryside moving past.
He had not left Aegis Port in three years. The previous time had been a commission delivery — a single day trip, managed carefully, the headphones at full attenuation for most of it. He had not enjoyed it. He had endured it the way he endured difficult acoustic environments: with technique and patience and the specific satisfaction of having managed something that required managing.
This was different.
She was beside him with her notebook open, writing something she was not showing him yet — he could see from the quality of her handwriting, the pace of it, that it was not the essay or the technical descriptions but something more personal, the red notebook's private register. He was not curious in the invasive sense. He was curious in the sense of knowing she was doing her work and being glad she had the space to do it.
He wrote in the commission notebook. The new violin assessment — the build commission, the new instrument rather than a restoration. He was at the stage where the concept needed to resolve into material choices, which was one of his favorite stages: the moment when the theoretical became concrete, when the specific wood and specific dimensions and specific design decisions produced the specific instrument and not any other.
He wrote and she wrote and the train moved through the winter landscape.
He thought about Korea ahead. He thought about meeting her parents — her father who had asked about the school and her mother who had said *on our behalf.* He thought about standing on the stage in the school's hall with the shamisen his grandfather had left him.
He thought about the first time he had played the shamisen in this specific context — not in the workshop alone, not in the improvisations with her, but the first time: in the Moonlight Atrium, as imagined, in the mental rehearsal he had been running for two weeks. He played through the compositions in his mind, the way he had been doing every morning since they decided on Korea, fixing the music in his hands through imagined repetition.
The pale gold appeared.
It was present even on the train, in the winter countryside, in the moving vehicle with the managed acoustic. Pale gold, slightly muted — she was not playing, she was writing — but present, the ambient version of it that had developed since she moved in next door. The building's ambient, carried with him.
He wrote the next line of the commission notes.
She shifted slightly beside him — not discomfort, just movement, the way people move on trains when they've been sitting for a while. She looked up from the notebook and out the window.
She said, quietly: "Bridge announcement in about twenty seconds."
He adjusted the attenuation.
The bridge announcement came. He managed it. She looked at him briefly — checking, not performing concern — and he gave a small nod that meant *fine,* and she returned to her notebook.
This was what he had asked for: tell him before, and sit with him. She was doing exactly what he had asked, without elaborating, without performing vigilance, simply doing the practical thing and being present.
He lowered the attenuation after the bridge.
He looked at the winter landscape.
He thought: I am on a train to Korea to play music in a school with the person I love.
He thought: this is available to me. This has been available to me for eight months. I did not know it was available until it arrived.
He returned to the commission notes.
The train moved through the winter.
You've reached the end of this chapter
