He thought about what she had said: *your violin told me you understand how sound moves through bodies.*

He had built things for twenty years. He had been trained by his grandfather from the age of eight, had worked in the workshop every summer from twelve onward, had inherited it at eighteen when his grandfather died and there was no one else to inherit it. In those years he had made instruments for others and instruments for himself and instruments that were for no one yet, that were waiting to understand what they were for.

He had never, in those twenty years, had anyone say that an instrument told them something about him.

He had never, in those twenty years, looked at a crack in someone's instrument before he looked at their face.

He finished eating and put the wrapper in the bin under the bench and looked at the list of measurements he needed.

Thursday. Three days.

He had a great deal to do before Thursday.

He opened the notebook again and kept working until the city outside had gone fully quiet and the only sounds were the distant harbor and the specific particular silence of a workshop in which someone was doing careful work at two in the morning, which was, he had long ago decided, one of the better silences in the world.

At some point after midnight he stopped writing long enough to notice that the workshop felt different than it usually did at this hour.

He sat with this observation for a while, trying to identify what had changed. The room was the same: same tools on their hooks, same wood smell, same quality of lamplight. The sounds outside were the same late-night harbor quiet. His headphones were around his neck, attenuation off, the way he wore them in the deep night when the city was quiet enough that he did not need the buffer.

He had spent most nights in this workshop for the past six years. He knew it at every hour, in every season, in every acoustic condition the city could produce. He had not, until this moment, noticed that it was a room designed entirely for one person.

He looked at the bench end where she had set the case. At the stool she had pulled up without asking. At the part of his notebook where her description of what she needed had begun and his calculations had followed without a gap, as if the two things had always been adjacent.

Thursday. Three days.

He picked up the pencil and kept working.
