The detection framework had been running for six hours when Alex came downstairs at six-fifteen, and the data it had collected overnight was the first thing he looked at before the kettle, before the stations, before the sign outside with its broken R that he still hadn't fixed.
The number was higher.
Not dramatically higher — the system wasn't built for drama, it was built for accuracy, and accuracy in this case meant a series of incremental readings that together told a story more clearly than any single data point could. He sat at the counter with the laptop and traced the trend line: baseline at installation, the reading from yesterday afternoon, the overnight logs taken every ninety minutes, and the current figure.
+23% from baseline.
He'd built the projection model the night before, after Sera left, after the tea was poured out and the cups dried and set away. The model had needed three inputs: the current emission level, the threshold for active interference, and the rate of change. Two of those were fixed. The rate of change was what he'd been waiting to confirm.
It was confirmed now.
3–6 weeks had been the original estimate, built on the assumption that the rate would hold stable. The rate wasn't holding stable. It was increasing, slowly but consistently, and the revised projection at current trajectory was:
14–18 days.
He looked at this number for a while.
Then he made tea — one cup, his — and sent Marcus an email, because it was six-thirty in the morning and he was a person who responded to numbers he couldn't control by doing things he could, and one of the things he could do was extend an invitation to someone who'd said thank you two weeks ago and hadn't come back yet.
The email was four lines. *The shop opens at eight. You're welcome whenever. The offer from last time still stands. — A.*
He sent it.
He went to open the shop.
---
The morning had a specific quality — the quality of a day that knew it was the second day of something and was behaving accordingly. The mana accumulation ran at its new normal: richer than six weeks ago, more layered, the ambient sound of a room that had become a place people returned to rather than visited. He ran through the station checks and the counter prep and the espresso machine's new sound, which he'd now diagnosed as a minor seal issue that he was monitoring rather than fixing because fixing it would require two hours and the right part and he was choosing his battles.
At nine o'clock, the door didn't open with the particular quality he'd been aware of expecting.
He noted this. He continued working.
At ten-fifteen, the detection framework sent a notification:
*NW ANOMALY UPDATE.* *+4% in last 90 minutes.* *Cumulative change from baseline: +27%.* *Trend analysis: acceleration confirmed. Rate of change increasing.* *Revised projection: active threshold in 14–18 days.*
He read it twice. Then he picked up his phone.
The message took him three drafts — not because the content was complicated, but because he was being careful about what the message was and was not. It was not: *I need you here.* It was not: *come back.* It was not any of the things it might have looked like if read by someone who didn't know the situation.
It was: *Detection framework update. NW anomaly accelerating. Revised projection: 14–18 days to active threshold, not 3–6 weeks. Thought you should know.*
He sent it.
He put the phone face-down on the counter and helped a new player — mid-twenties, nervous, referred by someone whose name he recognized — find a starting point. He explained the interface. He answered two questions and left space for the third one to arrive when it was ready. He went back to the counter.
Thirty-seven minutes later, the phone buzzed:
*Understood. Calculating implications. Will be in touch.*
Four words at the end. He read them once, set the phone down, and let himself feel what he felt about them, which was: the specific quality of a breath that you hadn't realized you were holding until it released.
She was thinking. She would be in touch. That was enough for right now.
He went back to work.
---
Marcus came in at eleven.
Alex knew it was him before the door fully opened — not from the mana-sense, which hadn't had time to register, but from the specific quality of hesitation in the way someone opened a door when they'd decided to come through it but hadn't fully committed to what came next. He'd seen that quality before. He'd seen it on Eli's first day. He'd seen it on Cara's first day. He recognized it as the posture of someone doing something they'd chosen rather than something they'd been pushed into, which meant they were still checking whether the choice had been right.
Marcus came in and looked at the room and then looked at Alex behind the counter with the expression of someone verifying that the person they'd expected to find was the person who was actually there.
"You came," Alex said.
"You sent the email," Marcus said.
"I did."
Marcus looked at the stations. He'd last been here during an incident that had ended with him sitting on the floor holding a tablet, which was not, Alex imagined, the context most people hoped to return to. He appeared to be deciding whether the room felt different now or the same.
He came to the counter.
"My sister had a better week," he said. He said it without preamble — the way people said things they'd decided to say before they arrived, so that the decision wouldn't lose its nerve on the walk from the door to the counter. "I thought you should know. Since—" He paused. "Since I mentioned it before."
"I'm glad to hear it," Alex said.
He meant it exactly as much as it sounded like he meant it, which was completely, and Marcus appeared to receive it that way — with the slight stillness of someone who'd been prepared for less and had gotten what was actually deserved.
"Do you want to play?" Alex said.
Marcus looked at the stations.
"Yeah," he said. "I think so."
---
He chose station eight.
Alex noted this from behind the counter with the quiet attention he paid to where people chose to sit, which told him things that people didn't know they were telling him. Station eight was middle of the back row — not the corner, not the wall, not the position of someone who needed to see every exit simultaneously. The position of someone who was still aware of exits but had decided that being in the middle was worth the tradeoff.
The mana from station eight, when it began, was different from Ch.9's emergency texture — the kinetic ability was still there, still present as a dense directional pressure in the signal, but the volatility was lower. Not absent. Lower. Like a river that was still running fast but had found its banks.
He was doing something right, somewhere outside this room, in the spaces Alex didn't have access to. The shop was part of it, but only part.
At some point during the second hour, Marcus said, without looking up from the screen:
"The woman. With the silver hair. She's not here today."
"She has something she's working through," Alex said.
"She's usually at the counter," Marcus said. "When I was here before — during—" He didn't finish that sentence. "She was standing at the counter the whole time. She didn't move."
"She was watching."
"Yeah." A pause, his character moving through a corridor on the screen. "She watches you when you're not looking at her."
Alex adjusted the stock behind the counter. "Does she," he said.
"Like—" Marcus considered how to put it. "Not like she's trying to catch you doing something. Like she's making sure you're still there. It's a different thing."
Alex was quiet.
"My sister does that with people she's not ready to lose yet," Marcus said. He delivered this information in the same matter-of-fact register he used for everything else, then moved his character through the next section of the game, and appeared to consider the subject closed.
Alex stood behind the counter and looked at the middle distance and thought about the specific activity of making sure someone was still there, and what it meant when you did it without meaning to.
---
The second message from Sera came at two-forty-seven, while Damon was deep in a strategic section of his current game and Marcus was on his third hour and Eli had been and gone and the shop was in its middle-afternoon configuration.
*14-18 days changes the timeline significantly. Have you considered what happens to the players in the shop if the source reaches active threshold?*
He stepped away from the counter briefly to reply properly.
*Yes. The detection module gives early warning — anyone in the shop will have time to leave before the interference is strong enough to affect them. But the detection module doesn't stop the source.*
He looked at what he'd written. Added:
*We need to stop the source.*
Sent it.
The reply came in less than two minutes:
*I know. I've been thinking about how.*
And then, after a pause long enough to suggest the next part had required a separate decision:
*The entity that directed it the last time — if it's the same one—*
And then nothing for four minutes, and then:
*I'll tell you in person.*
He stood at the counter and read those four words and thought about what she'd almost said and chosen not to say over text. *The entity that directed it the last time.* The one she knew. The one she hadn't named on the street two nights ago, when he hadn't asked and she hadn't offered and the silence had been sufficient.
She was going to tell him in person.
Which meant she was going to be in person.
He put the phone down and went back to the counter and thought about that for the rest of the afternoon with the particular quality of thinking that didn't announce itself but occupied the background of everything else.
---
At four-thirty, Marcus came to settle up and collect his things.
He set the tablet on the counter — the one from the incident, which Alex had left available at station eight without comment, and which Marcus had used in the middle of the session not because the kinetic ability had spiked but because, Alex thought, it had become a kind of check-in. A brief voluntary contact with the system that said *I'm choosing this. Still.*
"Same time next week?" Marcus asked.
"Whenever you want," Alex said. "I meant it when I said it."
Marcus looked at the tablet. "You said this wasn't a long-term solution."
"It isn't."
"So what is."
Alex looked at him — at the twenty-year-old with the sister who'd had a better week and the kinetic ability that was learning its banks and the station choice that was no longer a corner. He thought about what the honest answer was, which was the only answer worth giving.
"Learning to carry what you have without letting it carry you," he said. "No one can teach you that directly. But you can practice it, and places like this can give you space to practice in, and over time the carrying gets less heavy." He paused. "The ability doesn't go away. You just stop fighting it and start working with it."
Marcus considered this.
"That's a long answer," he said.
"It's a long process," Alex said.
Marcus picked up his bag. "Wednesday," he said.
"Wednesday," Alex confirmed.
He left. Damon, still at station one, knocked once on the desk surface without looking up — the specific knock that Alex had learned to translate as *that was done correctly and I'm acknowledging it without making it into a thing.*
Alex acknowledged the acknowledgment with the same wordlessness and went back to the counter.
---
He closed up at five and sat with the detection framework and a cup of tea and the data, which had continued its patient accumulation throughout the day.
The trend line was clear now. Fourteen days was the optimistic end of the projection. Eighteen was the conservative end. The variance depended on whether the rate of acceleration was itself accelerating — a second-order effect that the current data didn't have enough resolution to confirm or deny but that Sera had implied, in the way she implied things she was more certain of than she was saying, was possible.
He thought about the Triều đình's seven-day deadline and the anomaly's fourteen-day projection and the position Sera was in: caught between a directive that required her to act against something she'd spent seventeen days deciding wasn't the threat she'd come here for, and a threat she'd spent four centuries trying to understand and had just found in the same city.
He was still thinking about this when his phone produced a notification from a number he recognized but hadn't expected.
Not Sera. Lyra.
*She made a decision today. She'll tell you herself. Tomorrow at nine.*
He read it three times.
Then he set the phone down and looked at the northwest-facing wall, past which, 2.3 kilometers away, something was waking up at 14–18 days and counting.
She'd made a decision.
He didn't know what the decision was. He had an opinion about what he hoped it was, which he examined briefly and acknowledged and then set aside as not relevant to anything he could control. What he could control was being at the shop at nine tomorrow, which he would have been regardless.
The detection framework sent its evening summary:
*DAILY SUMMARY — DAY 2 OF ACTIVE MONITORING.* *NW anomaly: +27% from baseline. Rate of change: +3.2% per 6-hour period.* *Current projection: active threshold in 14–18 days.* *Co-creator: remote connection detected, 22:14 to 22:31.* *The Withered Hall: new detail recorded. An object has appeared on the chair.* *Classification: unknown. Source: co-creator passive contribution.* *Note — things that return do so by choice. The act of return is itself information.*
He read the last section twice.
The Withered Hall — built from the data of how she moved through a game, from the negative spaces she'd looked at longest, from the shape of something she'd carried without knowing she was carrying it. He'd watched it appear on his screen and understood it as the game reading her more accurately than she'd expected to be read.
And now, while she was somewhere in the city thinking about decisions and directives and entities she'd known, she had put something in the chair.
He didn't know what it was. The classification was unknown — the system could identify that a co-creator contribution had occurred but couldn't categorize the object without more context.
He thought about what you put in an empty chair.
He thought about what it meant that she'd put something there tonight, of all nights.
He closed the laptop.
He washed the cup.
He went upstairs and set an alarm that he didn't need and lay in the dark and thought about things that returned by choice, and the information contained in the act of returning, and nine o'clock tomorrow, and what a person decided when they had seven days and fourteen days and four centuries and one question they'd been circling for seventeen of them.
The city outside did its overnight things.
The chair in The Withered Hall held its new object in the warm late-afternoon light that never changed.
Alex slept.
