The framework showed *intermittent* and he read the word twice.
Not *continuous.* Not *sustained.* Intermittent — the specific word for a thing that was present, then absent, then present again. A pattern. A pattern had a window.
He sent the message to Damon before the tea had finished steeping:
*Framework shows intermittent Herald presence at NW building. Do you have movement data?*
The reply came in eleven minutes: *Working on it. Two hours.*
He opened the shop.
He made tea — one cup, automatic, his own. Set it on the counter. Stood looking at it for a moment. Then he filled the kettle again and made a second, and set it beside the first, and didn't examine why.
The morning came in through the front window at the angle it came in on clear days, falling across the back row of stations in the way that made the room look, briefly, like a place someone had designed with intention. Which it was, he supposed, though the intentions had been his and had been less architectural than practical.
Eli arrived at eight-thirty.
He came in with the economy of movement that had developed over weeks — not rushed, not casual, the specific efficiency of someone who had learned the layout of a place and moved through it without needing to think about it. He went to station four. He started his game. The mana from station four was warm and familiar in the way that only the repeated, genuine choosing of a thing could make it familiar.
Alex stood behind the counter and looked at station four and thought about familiar.
---
Marcus arrived at ten.
He came through the door with the slight checking quality he always had — the quick scan that confirmed the shop was the shop, that Alex was where Alex was, that station eight was available. It was. He went to it.
"Wednesday," Alex said.
"Wednesday," Marcus confirmed.
They had developed, over four visits, a greeting vocabulary that contained no unnecessary words. Alex found this efficient and genuinely comfortable, which was a combination he associated with very few relationships.
Marcus settled into station eight with the ease of someone returning to a place that had started to fit him — not the guarded economy of the first visit, not the tentative acclimation of the second, but the particular comfort of someone who had decided a space was theirs and the space had agreed. He picked up the tablet that lived at station eight now, not because Alex had put it there for him specifically but because it had migrated there through a process neither of them had discussed, and he started his session.
Alex went back to the counter.
At ten-forty, the framework updated:
*Herald presence at NW building: confirmed active. Duration of current session: 3 hours, 12 minutes. Previous absence window: 2 hours, 34 minutes.*
2 hours, 34 minutes. He looked at that number and thought about what could be done in 2 hours and 34 minutes.
At eleven-thirty, Damon came in.
---
He had his laptop open before he'd fully reached the counter.
"Movement data," he said. "Twenty-four hours, reconstructed from the framework readings and the Meridian office access logs." He turned the laptop so Alex could see the display: a simplified map of the northwest quarter with two marked points and a dotted line between them. "NW building, here. Second location — I haven't confirmed the address, but the direction is consistent with the eastern docklands. Here." He indicated the second point. "He's making this transit, in both directions, on a consistent schedule. Four to five hours at the building, two to three hours away."
"Why the docklands?"
"I don't know yet. Safe house, possibly. Or he's building something else there — a secondary working, a fallback position, a supply cache. The point is—"
"There's a window," Alex said.
"There's a window," Damon agreed. "Every cycle. When he's in transit between the two points, he's not at either location. He's on neutral ground."
At twelve forty-five, Sera came in.
She read the map display in approximately fifteen seconds. "Consistent transit pattern," she said, pulling a stool up to the counter — not Damon's stool, the one beside it. The configuration had shifted; they'd stopped performing the spatial habits of the shop's ordinary life and arranged themselves around the work. "If we intercept him in transit, we're not walking into his prepared ground."
"He'll know the area," Alex said.
"He always knows the area. But there's a difference between operational familiarity and a purpose-built working site." She looked at the map. "In transit, he's not connected to either structure. He's just—" She paused, looking for the word. "Himself."
"Can you work on him directly?" Damon said. "Disrupting a prepared working is one thing. A four-century-old entity in his own person—"
"It's different," she said. "Not necessarily harder. The source required working against a structure that had been built to resist. What I need to do to Herald is more — specific. He maintains a connection to the working even when he's not physically at the site. If I can interrupt that connection, the reconstruction stops. The source has no director. Without a director, the fractured structure won't rebuild."
"How long does the interruption need to last?"
"Long enough for the fractures to become self-sustaining. The Chaos structure requires active direction to maintain coherence — without it, the fractured pieces will work against each other. An hour. Perhaps ninety minutes."
"And he'll know you're doing it the moment you start," Alex said.
"Yes," she said. "He'll know who it is. He knows my method." She said it the way she said things she'd made peace with at the level of saying them. "That can't be avoided. What can be avoided is him being on ground he's prepared for it."
---
At two-thirty, while Damon was running calculations on the transit timing and Alex was helping a new player at station two work through the tutorial, Marcus came to the counter.
He set the tablet down — not because the session was over, because he had something to say and he preferred to say things face-to-face.
"My sister came home from the hospital this week," he said.
Alex set down what he'd been holding.
"The doctor said she's stable. She can go to outpatient now instead of staying in." He said it with the specific flatness of someone reporting something significant and trying to calibrate how much weight to give it — not wanting to perform emotion, not wanting to minimize it either. "I thought I should tell you. Since you asked about her before."
"I'm glad," Alex said. "Really."
Marcus nodded. Not the dismissive nod of someone receiving pro forma response — the nod of someone who had correctly identified that the gladness was genuine and had accepted it as such.
"She wants to come see the shop sometime," he said. "I told her it was — I said it was somewhere I come to practice something. She said that sounded like me."
Alex looked at him. "She'd be welcome."
"Yeah." Marcus picked up the tablet. "I figured." He went back to station eight.
Alex stood at the counter and looked at the room — Eli at four, Marcus at eight, Damon at the counter running numbers, Sera standing at the northwest-facing wall where she sometimes stood when she was reading the ambient — and thought: this. Not the mana system, not the detection framework, not the strategic asset that AEGIS was preparing to back up. This specific room with these specific people in it. This was what the evening's work was about.
---
Cole's message arrived at three-seventeen:
*Authorization granted. Two-unit standby deployed to northwest quarter perimeter. Non-engagement protocol unless civilian threat materializes. You have operational lead. — Cole.*
Damon read it. "Faster than twenty-four hours."
"He pushed," Sera said.
"He did." Damon looked at the message. "Cole is—" He paused, appearing to reassess a previous categorization. "He's actually quite good at his job."
"Yes," Sera said, with the quality she gave accurate statements she found slightly inconvenient. "He is."
Alex read the message again. Two units, perimeter, non-engagement. If something went wrong and Herald tried to move into the wider city — if the confrontation escalated beyond what three people could contain — there was a wall. Not a guarantee. A wall.
"Window opens at approximately eight p.m.," Damon said, returning to the map. "Based on the last three cycles, he'll depart the NW building between seven forty-five and eight-fifteen. Transit to the docklands location takes roughly twenty minutes on foot — he doesn't appear to use vehicles." He paused. "Which is interesting, but not immediately actionable."
"He walks," Alex said.
"He walks," Damon confirmed. "He takes a specific route — here, and here." He traced it on the map. "Through the service district. Low foot traffic at that hour. Three possible intercept points."
Sera studied the three points.
"The middle one," she said. "It gives us the longest unobstructed approach window and the most exits if we need to disengage quickly."
"Agreed," Alex said.
Damon closed the laptop. He looked at both of them with the expression he wore when he'd completed his portion of a task and was preparing to hand off. "I'll handle AEGIS coordination and maintain communication during the operation. You'll have a direct line to me — if anything changes on the perimeter or at the NW building, you'll know immediately." He paused. "And if the docklands location shows activity, I want to know. I haven't been able to determine what he's building there."
"Noted," Sera said.
Damon stood. He looked at the shop — the stations, the ambient, the particular quality of the space that he had, over the past month, stopped performing indifference about. "Tonight," he said. "Eight o'clock. Don't be late."
He left.
---
The shop thinned through the late afternoon in the way it always did — the rhythm of people finishing their sessions and drifting toward their evenings, the ambient mana settling into its closing-time quality, the light through the window moving from afternoon to the particular grey of early dusk.
Eli left at four-thirty. He stopped at the counter on his way out and looked at Alex with the directness he'd developed for important things.
"Good luck," he said.
"Thank you."
That was all. He went.
Marcus left twenty minutes later — session complete, tablet set neatly at the edge of station eight, the small organizational gesture of someone who had decided that this space was worth treating with care.
At five-fifteen, Alex ran the closing sequence. Stations off, one by one. Ambient lighting down. Door locked. The counter lamp — the last thing.
Sera was still there. She had been standing at the northwest-facing wall for the past twenty minutes, doing what she did when she was reading the ambient — not reading it now, he understood, but standing in the specific familiar orientation of it, the way you stood at a window you knew well.
"Marcus's sister is coming home," Alex said.
His voice was quiet in the closed shop.
Sera turned from the wall.
"From the hospital," he said. "She's stable. She'll be outpatient now." He looked at station eight, empty, the tablet waiting at the edge of it. "He came in this afternoon to tell me."
She was quiet for a moment. Then: "I don't remember the last time I did something whose effect on a specific person I could track that directly."
"Is that good or not?"
She considered this honestly. "I don't know. But it's—" She paused. "It's more real. Than what I've been doing for a long time. Things on this scale." She gestured, vaguely, at the shop, at the window toward the northwest, at what the evening held. "Where the outcome is visible in a person's face. Where someone comes in on a Wednesday to tell you that their sister is doing better." She looked at him. "I had forgotten what that felt like."
He looked at her — at the expression on her face, which was the expression of someone receiving something they hadn't expected to find here, in this particular shop, in this particular city, from this particular situation they'd come to end.
"It's why I built this," he said. Not a correction — an addition. "Not the system. This. The part where someone comes back on Wednesday."
She held his gaze.
"I know," she said, quietly. "I can see that now."
---
At six-forty, they put on their jackets.
Alex picked up the two cups that had been sitting on the counter since afternoon — cold, untouched for hours — and he poured them out, one and then the other, and rinsed them, and set them in the drying rack side by side. Not a ceremonial act. The act he performed every evening, the last task before leaving, the small completion of the day.
Sera stood two steps away and watched him do it.
He set the second cup in the rack beside the first.
He looked up at her.
"Ready?" he said.
She looked at the two cups in the rack — at the ordinary, daily, unremarkable fact of them. She looked at him.
"Yes," she said.
He turned off the counter lamp.
They went out into the evening, and the door closed behind them, and the shop held its quiet in the dark, and in the Hall, the candle continued to burn with the patience of something that didn't know it was about to be tested and burned regardless.
Eight o'clock. The window would open.
They walked northwest.
