The notification arrived at 6:47 a.m., while Alex was still deciding between Earl Grey and something called Morning Storm that Eli had left behind last week and that smelled aggressively optimistic.
*ANOMALY UPDATE.* *Distance: 0.8 kilometers. Status: Moving. Approach vector: direct.* *Estimated arrival: 18–24 minutes.*
Alex read it twice. Then he put down the Morning Storm and reached for the Earl Grey.
Some decisions, he believed, should be made from a position of familiarity.
He filled the kettle, set it on the burner, and stood at the counter while it heated. The shop was quiet at this hour — stations dark, chairs empty, the city outside still in that brief suspended state between the end of the night shift and the beginning of everything else. In forty minutes he would open the door and the day would start and the mana would begin its slow warm accumulation and he would be, by any observable measure, a person running a modest gaming café in the east quarter of Argent City.
In eighteen to twenty-four minutes, something ancient and deliberate was going to walk through his door.
He thought about this with the careful, measured attention he brought to problems he couldn't solve in advance. The system had told him she was non-aggressive in posture — yesterday, and the day before, and through fourteen hours of stationary observation that had felt, across the distance, like being read. Whatever she'd concluded from that reading, she was now moving toward him rather than away, which meant either she had decided he wasn't a threat or she had decided she could handle whatever he turned out to be.
Neither of these was wrong, exactly. That was the part he found most interesting.
The kettle boiled. He made tea.
He was lau the counter when she walked in.
---
Sera had spent considerable time, the previous evening, reviewing what she knew about human concealment.
This was not, historically, a subject she'd needed to study. When you were the sovereign of an extradimensional court, the question of blending in with mortals did not arise with any frequency. She had walked among them, of course — centuries of occasional incursion into the mortal world for purposes of treaty, observation, and the rare corrective intervention — but she had done so as herself, which was to say visibly, and with the implicit understanding that the humans in question would adjust their behavior accordingly.
Argent City, she had concluded from two days of window observation, operated differently.
Lyra had been helpful in a way that Sera suspected contained a carefully suppressed enjoyment. She had gone out early and returned with clothing — dark trousers, a grey jacket, boots with a heel low enough to be practical and a silhouette modern enough to be unremarkable. She had laid these out on the table with the neutral expression of a person who had dressed a queen for many occasions and was treating this one with the same professional respect as all the others.
"The hair," Lyra had said.
Sera had looked at her.
"It's—" Lyra had chosen her words with the care of someone navigating around a known hazard. "Distinctive."
Sera's hair was the silver-white of old starlight and fell to the middle of her back. It was, she was aware, not a common configuration in this era.
She had allowed Lyra to put it up.
The result, she'd assessed in the narrow bathroom mirror, was a woman who might be described as striking, or unusual, but not impossible. Someone who might work in one of the glass towers. Someone who might, in the right light, be from here.
She had practiced, briefly, the particular quality of purposeful urban neutrality she'd observed in the pedestrians below — the eyes-forward, shoulders-settled, I-am-going-somewhere-and-it-is-not-interesting posture of a city person on an ordinary errand. She was four hundred years old and had mastered the court postures of seven different civilizations. She could manage this.
She managed it for approximately two blocks before she stopped noticing she was doing it, which was the point at which it became real.
The shop was smaller than she'd expected.
She stood outside it for a moment — the sign above the door read THE RESPAWN in letters that were almost the right color, with one that flickered — and recalibrated. She had not expected grandeur, precisely. But she had expected something that matched the scale of the power she'd been tracking. Something that announced itself. A tower, perhaps. A sanctum. At minimum, a building with more than one floor.
Instead: a glass front door with a small printed notice about hourly rates. A menu of some kind. A sticker, inexplicably, of a small yellow creature with large eyes that appeared to be running.
She pushed the door open and went in.
---
The smell reached her first: coffee, old wood, something savory warming on a stove, and beneath it all, woven into the air itself, the unmistakable signature of concentrated mana. Not aggressive. Not contained. Just present, the way warmth is present in a room with good insulation — pervasive, steady, accumulated over time.
She stopped two steps inside the door and took stock.
Twelve workstations in two rows, screens dark or idle. Three other patrons — a young woman with headphones and the absorbed posture of someone who had forgotten the world existed, two men in a quiet competition that appeared to involve significant mutual investment in not appearing to care who won. A long counter along the back wall. An espresso machine that was making sounds like a small animal clearing its throat. A flat-top grill. A single shelf of tea tins with handwritten labels.
And behind the counter, a man in a green apron who was cleaning the surface with a cloth and appeared to be thinking about something that had nothing to do with her.
Sera stood very still.
This was him. She was certain of it — the mana she'd tracked for three days was here, in this room, concentrated in the person of a man in his late twenties who was currently engaged in removing a small stain from a countertop with the focused attention of someone who had decided this task was worth doing properly. He was not, by any physical assessment, alarming. Medium height, lean, the kind of face that settled into calm easily and might have been called ordinary if not for something in the set of it — a quality of attention, maybe, or of someone who looked at the world with slightly more care than standard.
Four centuries of ruling had given Sera a finely calibrated sense for the weight people carried. This man was carrying something significant and had arranged it so that it didn't show from the outside. She recognized the architecture of that. She had built the same kind of structure in herself.
The power she sensed in him was enormous. It sat in him like a mountain sits on the earth — not performing its size, not announcing itself, simply being what it was because that was the only thing it knew how to do.
He was wiping down a counter.
She had absolutely no framework for this.
She chose the station at the far left of the back row — corner position, wall at her back, clear sightline to the door and every other station in the room. She sat down. The chair was more comfortable than she'd expected. The screen in front of her brightened as she settled into the seat, and a grid of images appeared: game titles, she understood, each with a small illustration and a line of text beneath it.
She looked at them. They looked back. The cursor — a small arrow she had watched other users move with a device connected to the machine — sat in the upper corner of the screen where she had not moved it because she had not yet determined how to move it without making the attempt visible.
She was, for the first time in a very long time, at a technological disadvantage in a tactical situation.
Footsteps. Unhurried.
The man from behind the counter set a cup of tea on the edge of her desk without breaking stride, pulled a chair from the neighboring station, turned it around, and sat down beside her with the relaxed comfort of someone settling in for a conversation he'd been half-expecting. He looked at her screen. He looked at her.
"First time?" he said.
His voice was even. Neutral. Not careful in the way of someone choosing words — careful in the way of someone who had learned to take up less space than he occupied and had made peace with this.
"No," Sera said.
He looked at the cursor, which had not moved.
He did not comment on this. He reached past her — not close, the gesture was measured, respectful of distance — and opened something on the screen: a game, she understood, simpler than the others she'd seen. An introduction.
"This one's a good start," he said. "Navigation here"— he indicated the device beside the screen — "action here. The tutorial takes about ten minutes. After that it explains itself."
Sera looked at the device. She looked at the screen. She was aware, with a clarity she found irritating, that she was being helped, and that the help was being offered without condescension or visible awareness that it was remarkable, and that she had no clean way to refuse it without revealing that she found it remarkable.
She put her hand on the device.
"Thank you," she said. The words came out correctly, the cadence of the modern form, the appropriate register. She had been practicing.
He nodded and stood up. He went back behind the counter. He resumed doing something with the espresso machine.
Sera moved the cursor carefully across the screen and thought: *this is what you came here for. Information. Observation. That is all this is.*
The tutorial began.
---
The mana, when it came, was nothing like anything Alex had processed before.
He noticed it the way you notice a change in air pressure — not dramatically, but with the whole body, an adjustment happening before the conscious mind caught up to it. He was refilling the tea tins behind the counter, his back to the room, when it began: a slow, deep current moving against the existing flow of the day's accumulation, as if someone had added a second river to a stream. Not violent. Not aggressive. Just — other. Different in kind, not just in quantity.
Old, he thought, was the only word that fit. Ancient in the way stone was ancient. In the way the dark between stars was ancient.
He did not turn around.
He continued restocking the tea tins and breathed carefully and let the mana-sense do what it was built to do: receive without reacting. The current was strong — stronger than Damon's by a significant margin, and Damon's had hit him like a concentrated beam of focused intelligence. This was something else. This had weight.
And underneath it, just barely perceptible through the depth and the age and the accumulated gravity of centuries: something that pulled toward the game. Not reluctantly. Not consciously, perhaps. But genuinely.
She was actually playing.
He put the last tin on the shelf and turned back to the counter and looked at the room with an expression he had spent considerable time developing, which was the expression of a person for whom everything was approximately normal. The woman in the corner was playing. Her posture was precise, shoulders level, chin at an angle that suggested she was accustomed to a different kind of attention than a computer screen required. Her hand moved the mouse with the deliberate efficiency of someone learning a new instrument by force of will rather than intuition.
She was terrible at the opening puzzle.
She was, within fifteen minutes, no longer terrible.
The rate of improvement was not the arc of a beginner finding her footing. It was the arc of a strategist mapping new terrain — methodical, rapid, without backtracking. She died twice on the second level and did not die again. By the third level she was moving through it with a precision that the game had not been designed to expect, exploiting angles of approach that Alex had built in as decoration rather than path because he'd assumed no one would think to look there.
He brewed a fresh pot of tea. He started prep for the lunch menu. He did not stare.
At half past ten, Damon Vale arrived.
---
"She's at station twelve," Damon said, without preamble, setting himself down on the counter stool he had apparently decided was his. "Don't look. She's been watching you since I walked in."
"Good morning," Alex said.
"Who is she?"
"A customer."
Damon looked at him with the expression of a man who processed information for a living and found this response inadequate. "She's not a customer. I don't know what she is, but the air around her is doing something that the air around regular people doesn't do." He paused. "I notice you're not surprised by this."
"Coffee?"
"Yes. Alex."
"Damon."
They looked at each other. Damon was, Alex had concluded, a man of genuine intelligence who had learned to use its performance as a shield, which made him, in his own way, a recognizable type. The difference was that Damon's shield was designed to impress while Alex's was designed to disappear. Two different solutions to the same underlying problem.
"She's fine," Alex said. "She's playing. That's what people do here."
"She's—" Damon paused again, visibly reassessing. "She's not from here. I mean here as in this city. Or this decade. Or possibly this—"
"Coffee," Alex said, and placed the cup on the counter with a finality that Damon, to his credit, recognized.
He took his coffee and went to station one, front row, center, and put his headphones on. Alex watched him go and noted that the headphones were not connected to anything, which meant Damon was listening to the room. This was either a problem or just Damon being Damon, and the distinction, Alex had decided, was not one he could resolve this morning.
He looked at the board of active stations.
Station twelve: still active. Session time: one hour, fourteen minutes.
The mana current from that corner of the room was steady as a held note.
---
Sera completed the third level and paused.
The game had given her something she hadn't expected, which was a problem to solve that didn't have an obvious solution and rewarded lateral thinking over direct approach. The level design was careful — not in the way of something built to be impressive, but in the way of something built to be understood. Whoever had made this had thought about how a mind moved through a problem, and had arranged the obstacles accordingly, and had left small rewards for approaches that required you to forget what you thought you knew about the shape of the thing.
She recognized this quality. She had encountered it in perhaps four or five strategic minds across four centuries. It was the quality of someone who built not to show what they could do, but to discover what you could do.
She became aware, gradually, that the man from behind the counter was at her station again.
He had not made a sound. He was standing slightly to her left, two feet back, holding a small plate. On the plate was something she didn't have a name for — pale and round and soft, dusted with what appeared to be a dark powder, with a small card beside it that read *red bean. made fresh. try it.*
"I didn't order anything," she said. She said it the same way she said most things — level, uninflected, a statement rather than a complaint.
"It's not an order. It's a recommendation." He set the plate on the corner of the desk, out of the way of the mouse. "You've been here for ninety minutes. You should eat something."
Sera looked at the plate. Then at him. He was not performing the gesture — there was no display of hospitality in his expression, no waiting for a response. He had brought her food because it seemed to him like the appropriate thing to do, and now he was going back to the counter, and the matter appeared to be settled as far as he was concerned.
She looked at the small card. *Try it.*
She picked up the mochi.
It was — not what she'd expected. Sweet, but not aggressively so. The texture was unfamiliar and took her a moment to process, and the red bean filling was earthy and smooth and carried in it the specific quality of something made by hand with patience. It was not elaborate. It was not trying to be anything other than what it was.
She finished it. She looked at the empty plate for a moment.
On the screen, the fourth level was waiting.
She picked up the mouse.
---
She left at eleven-forty without having looked directly at him again.
She rose from the station with the coordinated, economical movement of someone to whom physical awareness was completely natural, gathered nothing because she'd brought nothing, and walked toward the door in that same purposeful-neutral stride she'd had when she came in.
Alex was restocking cups behind the counter. He said, without planning to: "The fourth level has a second path that most people miss."
She stopped.
Her back was to him. She was two steps from the door. He could see the slight adjustment in her shoulders — the barely perceptible pause of a person receiving unexpected information and deciding what to do with it.
"It's not hidden," he continued, because he'd started and stopping now would be stranger than finishing. "It's just not obvious from the direction most people approach from. Worth trying tomorrow."
A silence that lasted long enough for him to become aware of it.
"Perhaps," she said.
And she left.
Alex stood behind the counter and looked at the door for a moment after it closed. Damon, from station one, had taken off his non-functional headphones and was watching him with an expression that contained, in roughly equal measure, curiosity, suspicion, and the particular satisfaction of a person who had been correct about something.
Alex looked at him.
"Don't," Alex said.
"I wasn't going to say anything," Damon said.
"You were going to say several things."
Damon considered this. "Tomorrow," he said, "I want the extended session rate."
"There isn't an extended session rate."
"There will be," Damon said, and put his headphones back on.
---
Alex sat down on his fire escape that evening with tea he'd actually remembered to drink while hot, which felt like a small victory, and looked at the system notification that had been waiting since mid-afternoon:
*NEW PLAYER REGISTERED.* *Classification: Anomaly / Ancient Sovereign.* *Mana quality: Unprecedented. No prior comparison available.* *Session duration: 1 hour, 47 minutes.* *Voluntary engagement: Confirmed.* *Voluntary return probability: 71%.*
He read the last line three times.
Seventy-one percent. The system, which had been built on the principle that nothing could be compelled, was telling him that she would probably come back. Not because she had to. Not because of anything he'd done that could be called influence or pressure or strategy. Because something in the space between walking in and walking out had produced, in an entity that had presumably walked into a great many places across a great many centuries, a seventy-one percent likelihood of return.
He thought about the way she'd held the mouse — precise, deliberate, learning with the compressed efficiency of a mind that didn't waste its own time. He thought about the empty plate. He thought about the pause at the door, and the single word she'd left behind like something set down carefully on a surface: *perhaps.*
Below him, Argent City settled into its evening rhythms. Somewhere west-southwest, four point two kilometers — no, less now, she'd been closer, much closer, a desk and a half meter of air and a plate of mochi — something ancient was doing whatever it did in the hours after it had gone hunting and returned without completing the hunt.
He wondered if she was standing at her window.
He wondered what she'd thought of the fourth level.
He drank his tea, which was still hot, which was the small victory he'd promised himself, and looked at the city, and did not examine too carefully the warmth in his chest that had nothing to do with mana accumulation and everything to do with seventy-one percent.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The notification arrived at 6:47 a.m., while Alex was still deciding between Earl Grey and something called Morning Storm that Eli had left behind last week and that smelled aggressively optimistic.
*ANOMALY UPDATE.* *Distance: 0.8 kilometers. Status: Moving. Approach vector: direct.* *Estimated arrival: 18–24 minutes.*
Alex read it twice. Then he put down the Morning Storm and reached for the Earl Grey.
