Two weeks.
The detection framework had been showing the same reading for four days now — Docklands and Meridian West both stable, both accumulating at the same patient rate they'd been accumulating at since confirmation. No acceleration. Herald was either not pushing yet or was pushing in ways that the framework couldn't detect, which was its own category of concern that he'd decided to hold without acting on until there was more data.
Two weeks, possibly less.
He opened the shop at seven-thirty — the early start that had become the default on days when something significant was pending, which was most days now — and made the tea and ran the checks and looked at the room with the specific attention of someone trying to see it for what it was going to need to be.
A battleground, eventually. On a day that was not today but was within reach of today.
He looked at the stations — the twelve of them, the cables, the ambient glow of a space that had been in consistent use long enough to have a temperature of its own. He looked at the counter. At the counter lamp. At the tea shelf with the box Sera had brought back from wherever she'd been the day Lyra had gone to Paris, placed slightly apart from the others.
At nine-twelve, Sera came in.
At ten-oh-three, his phone produced a message:
*Paris finished early. Arriving tonight. Update me.*
Sera read it over his shoulder — she was close enough that the natural thing was to hold the phone so she could see, which it now was — and said:
"She's coming back."
"Good timing," he said.
"Yes," she said, in the tone of someone who had noticed that the timing was good and was choosing not to examine why she'd noticed.
She went back to the signature profile, which was finally complete but which she was reviewing one more time because she reviewed things twice before they were done. He went back to the framework calibration, which was also complete, and which he was reviewing one more time for the same reason.
The morning ran.
---
Lyra arrived the following noon.
Not to the apartment first — to the shop. Which told Alex something about what she'd been told and what she'd decided to prioritize, though he didn't know what Sera had said to her in the brief exchange they'd had the previous evening.
He was behind the counter when the door opened, and he looked up with the automatic attention he gave every new entry, and the person who came through the door had the specific quality of someone arriving at a place they knew things about without having been there before.
She stood in the doorway and read the room.
He'd seen this a few times now — Aldric Vane, Director Cole, Nadia — the specific process of someone encountering the shop for the first time with prior knowledge of what it was. Each of them had looked at different things first, the order of their attention telling him something about what they'd been told and what they'd come for.
Lyra looked at the ambient first. Not with visible effort — with the natural orientation of someone for whom the ambient of a space was normal data. Then at Sera, standing at the counter with her tea and her laptop. Then at the specific way Sera was standing — the ease of it, the absence of the watchfulness that Lyra, apparently, had learned to read as Sera's default configuration.
Then she looked at Alex.
She crossed to the counter. She looked at him with the direct quality that he'd identified, from what Sera had told him, as simply how Lyra looked at things she was assessing seriously.
"Lyra Ashwood," she said.
"Alex Ward," he said.
The handshake was brief and calibrated — two people who had heard about each other from someone they both cared about, meeting for the first time with the specific social geometry that entailed.
She looked at the shop again — the stations, the counter, the counter lamp, the tea shelf. Then at Sera.
"You told me about the shop," she said.
"Yes," Sera said.
"You didn't tell me about—" She paused. Looked at the room, and at the way the room held the two of them in it — Sera at the counter in the position she always occupied, Alex behind it, the specific quality of two people who had found the natural positions they occupied in a shared space. "About this."
Sera was quiet for a moment.
"I didn't know how to describe it while it was happening," she said.
"I know," Lyra said.
That was the end of that conversation. Lyra accepted the tea Alex had already started making — without being asked, because it was what you did when someone arrived — and turned her attention to the operational update.
---
He briefed her in the same order he'd internalized the information himself: triangle confirmed, three nodes, The Respawn at geometric center, Herald's purpose to corrupt rather than destroy, two-week timeline.
Lyra listened with the precision of someone who'd been trained to receive operational information under conditions that didn't allow for repetition. She asked three questions, all of which were the right three questions, and he understood where Sera's economy of communication came from — or one of the places it came from.
"He'll come here when the network fails," she said, when he'd finished.
"That's the assessment," he said.
"And you're choosing to let that happen."
"The Respawn is the ground I know best," he said. "Herald has spent a year building around this center without being inside it. I've been operating here for two months. The mana system — the voluntary accumulation — is active and at full capacity. When Herald arrives, I'll have a counter-force that he didn't design for."
Lyra looked at him for a moment.
"What kind of counter-force?"
"Chaos Magic operates by making compulsion feel like choice," he said. "Voluntary mana — genuine, uncoerced engagement — is the specific opposite of that. Not defensively, structurally. The same way darkness isn't defended against by adding more darkness."
She was quiet.
"You've been thinking about this for longer than two weeks," she said.
"The problem has been visible since I understood what Herald was trying to do," he said. "I've been working through what I have that he doesn't."
Lyra turned to Sera.
"He's been thinking about this for longer than two weeks," she said, as if confirming an observation rather than sharing new information.
Sera: "I know."
---
Damon arrived at two.
The four of them at the counter had a different quality from the three-person configuration that had become the norm — fuller, more complete, the sense of something that had been building toward a full team having arrived at it. Damon had the data. Lyra had the Court backing. Sera had the Old Courts knowledge and the working capacity. Alex had the ground.
They planned for an hour.
Disruption of both remaining nodes: simultaneous, coordinated, within the same two-hour window. Sera and Alex addressing Docklands — she had the working capacity, he had the buffer function that had worked in Ch.24, the two of them knowing each other's methods now after the NW working and the service district confrontation. Damon and an AEGIS unit addressing Meridian West — Sera couldn't approach that site because the alarm system at NW had flagged her Old Courts signature, and Meridian West likely had similar detection. Damon with institutional cover and a working he'd had Sera teach him the simplified version of.
"You can do the working?" Alex said.
"I can do the basic structural disruption," Damon said. "Not with Sera's precision. But enough to fracture the node. We're not trying to be elegant — we're trying to break it before it activates."
"That's enough," Sera said.
Timing: seven days from today. AEGIS coordination already confirmed. The window: eight p.m. to ten p.m., the same transit period they'd used for the service district confrontation, chosen because Herald's movement patterns suggested lower monitoring activity during those hours.
After the disruptions: The Respawn remained open for its full operating day. Maximum voluntary mana accumulation. When Herald arrived — and he would arrive, drawn to the center of a geometry that had just failed — the shop would be running at full capacity.
"The players," Alex said. "I need to close early on the day of the operation. And I need to tell Eli and Marcus — not everything, but enough that they understand why they shouldn't come in that day."
"What will you tell them?" Lyra said.
"The truth in the form that's useful to them," he said. "That there's something that needs to be handled, that the shop is involved, and that I'd rather they weren't here for it. They don't need the full picture. They need to trust that I'm asking for a reason."
"They will," Damon said. Not *they should* or *I hope so*. A statement of fact, from someone who had been watching the relationships in the shop develop for two months.
---
At four-thirty, Damon left.
Sera left at five to brief Aldric — the additional Court backing that Lyra had arranged before returning. She said she'd be back before closing, which she was, at five-fifty, with the specific quality of someone who had just completed a necessary task efficiently and was ready to stop doing necessary tasks for the day.
At six, the last regular left.
Alex ran the closing sequence. Sera did the counter. Lyra had been occupying the chairs in the back section since four — reading something on her phone with the focused quality of someone working rather than resting, occasionally making a note — and now she stood and collected her things and came to the front of the shop.
Sera and Alex finished the closing at the same time, as they usually did, in the way that had come to feel like the natural rhythm of the end of a day.
"I'll get our things from the apartment," Lyra said to Sera. "Give me an hour."
Sera nodded.
Lyra started for the door. Then she stopped and turned, and looked at Alex with the direct quality she'd looked at him with all day, which was simply how she looked at things that she'd decided to look at.
"I've served Sera for a long time," she said. "I know what she looks like when she's carrying something alone, because she's done it for most of the time I've known her." She paused. "She's not doing that right now. And I don't think it's the investigation."
Alex looked at her.
"I'm not telling you something you don't already know," she said. "I'm telling you because some things are worth saying out loud even when both parties already know them." Another pause. "Whatever happens in seven days — she'll be all right. Because you're here, and because you're the kind of person who is here in the specific way that means something."
She left.
The door closed.
The shop was quiet in the specific way it went quiet when the day had been full and was now finished.
Sera was still at the counter. She'd been standing close enough to hear what Lyra had said, which they both knew, and which neither of them was going to address directly, which they also both knew.
"Lyra is very direct," Sera said, eventually.
"Yes," he said.
"She's been that way for as long as I've known her." A pause. "I find it useful."
"So do I," he said.
Sera picked up her jacket. She looked at him with the look that had started as a threat assessment and had become, over thirty-seven days, something he didn't have a clean category for but recognized completely.
"Tomorrow," she said.
"Eight o'clock," he said.
She left.
He stood at the counter in the closed shop and looked at the door for a moment.
Seven days.
The notification came in at six-fifty-three:
*CO-CREATOR: DEPARTED. LYRA ASHWOOD: FIRST VISIT LOGGED.* *The Withered Hall: candle burning bright.* *Note — seven days is a specific kind of time. Short enough to require urgency. Long enough to require steadiness. Both at once, which is harder than either alone. The preparation for significant things is not different from the preparation for ordinary things. It is simply more necessary.*
