The hospital had been called Hanseo Eastern Medical Center, and before the Unreal event it had been in the process of a renovation that had left the eastern wing stripped to its structural skeleton. It was this stripped section that another survivor group had turned into a rough medical facility — the exposed concrete and steel provided better acoustics for the System's overlay information, according to Mi-rae, who had come from that group, and the renovation's debris had been cleared by people who needed something useful to do with their hands in the first days after the event.
The request for pharmaceutical supplies was straightforward: their injured needed things that were locked in the hospital's main pharmacy, which was in the Dungeon-ized central wing. Do-yun had assessed the Dungeon configuration from two blocks away and determined that it was navigable. She had told Shin-woo. He had assessed her assessment, asked two questions, and agreed.
Standing outside the main entrance with the mana-sight running at full passive, she was revising her initial assessment.
"The configuration is consistent with what I said from outside," she told him, quietly. "The dungeon-ization is medium-density, navigable, no active patrol entities in the outer corridors." She paused. "But the architectural merge is more complete than I could read from distance. The System has fully integrated the hospital's structure with something from your world. I can see the energy signature clearly from here."
Shin-woo said nothing.
She looked at his instability reading: seventy-one. It had been sixty-seven when they left the shelter. Four points in the half-block between their approach point and the hospital entrance.
She looked at the building through the mana-sight and read the architectural energy signature — the particular frequency of the merged construction, the way the hospital's modern material had been interpenetrated by the stone-and-iron aesthetic of a structure she had seen in her dreams for years.
The treatment tower.
She knew it because she had watched it exist for years from the outside — had seen its silhouette against the skyline of the world it belonged to, had seen people enter it and leave it changed in specific ways. She had watched Shin-woo enter it at seventeen. She had watched him leave it at nineteen. She had watched the difference between those two versions of him and had catalogued it in her files with the flat descriptive language of someone trying to stay accurate rather than let her reaction color the record.
Her files used the language of neutrality. What she had felt had been far from neutral.
She said: "We don't have to go in today."
"The supplies are needed," he said.
"I know. I'm offering the choice."
"I'm aware of the offer." He looked at the entrance. His voice was the controlled register. "I have been inside worse structures."
This was true. She had watched him go inside worse structures.
"That doesn't mean this one isn't difficult," she said.
He looked at her — she registered the orientation of his attention.
"You know what this building is," he said. Not a question.
"Yes."
"Since we arrived."
"Since we turned the corner two blocks back and I read the energy signature."
He absorbed this. Then: "And you said nothing."
"I was deciding whether to say something would help or whether it would be more useful to let you register it yourself and decide how you wanted to approach it." She paused. "I'm still not sure I made the right call."
He was quiet for a moment.
"Let's go in," he said.
They went in.
The outer corridors were as she had assessed: medium-density dungeon-ization, the hospital's institutional material merged with the tower's older construction in patterns that were disorienting but navigable. She kept the mana-sight at active passive and tracked their path through the merged architecture, cross-referencing the hospital's layout with the structure she could read through the energy flows.
Shin-woo moved beside her without speaking.
She watched his instability reading: seventy-three. Seventy-five. The building itself was doing what the Relic Train had done, more slowly — activating a response through proximity rather than through construct. The environment was doing the work without any deliberate trigger. The System had not needed to design a trap here. It had just merged the right structure with the right space.
In the second corridor from the main atrium, she found the path to the pharmacy: a branch that diverged from the integration zone's heaviest density and ran along the building's original eastern service corridor. The service corridor was less merged — the renovation had stripped the eastern wing before the Unreal event, which meant there was less existing structure for the Dungeon-ization to integrate. It was lighter here. Cleaner.
"The pharmacy is along this corridor," she said. "The integration is minimal in this section. It should be navigable without major difficulty."
"The rest of the building," Shin-woo said.
"The central section is the heaviest. The western wing is completely merged — I don't recommend entering it without specific cause." She paused. "The room in the central section at the junction of corridors B and C is the densest single point."
Shin-woo stopped walking.
She had been watching the mana-flows rather than his posture, but she registered the stop through the absence of his footsteps. She turned toward him — or toward the position he had occupied — and read the instability: seventy-eight.
"B and C junction," he said.
"Yes."
"You know what room that corresponds to."
She thought about whether to confirm.
"Yes," she said.
He was quiet.
"I know because I watched you enter and exit that room across multiple visits over two years," she said. "I watched what it looked like when you arrived and what it looked like when you left. I documented it." A pause. "I documented it as accurately as I could because I believed that someone should have an accurate record. I don't believe the people who designed what happened in that room should be the only ones who hold the account of it."
"What does your account say," he said.
She had not been asked this directly before. She thought about the voice memos, about the particular evenings when she had recorded what she had seen and then sat in silence afterward unable to add anything, about the files she had labeled with dates and locations rather than names because names made things feel more present than she could manage.
"My account says," she said, carefully, "that what happened in that room was not about helping you. It was about extracting a resource. They used the language of treatment because it was more controllable than the language of extraction. And you were seventeen years old and you had no framework for distinguishing between the two because you had been told, since you were very young, that your value was in your power and that your power needed to be managed." She paused. "My account says those things are true. It also says that you walked out of that room at nineteen and went directly to the border garrison and did not stop moving until the border was secure. Which is a different account from the one in the charges."
Shin-woo was very still.
"You watched me walk out," he said.
"Yes."
"And then watch me go to the garrison."
"Yes."
"You watched all of it."
"All of it that I could see," she said. "Which was most of it."
Another stillness. This one had the quality she associated with processing something very large — the architecture of understanding being rebuilt around new information.
He said: "The garrison soldiers called me the black iron commander. Not as an insult — as a description. I didn't understand it until the third year, when one of them explained that black iron was the metal that held a structure together even when the stone around it had failed. I had thought they were describing the curse."
"They were describing you," she said.
"Perhaps both."
"Perhaps both," she agreed. "But the distinction matters."
They continued to the pharmacy.
The lock was a Dungeon-adapted mechanism — she found the activation sequence in the System's overlay and opened it in thirty seconds. The pharmaceutical stores inside were partially degraded but sufficiently intact: the things the medical group needed were there.
She began cataloguing while Shin-woo stood at the corridor entrance, maintaining the watch that was his function in any room where she was working.
In the mana-overlay, she saw the file.
It was not physical — not a folder or a document. It was an energy construct, the mana equivalent of a record, attached to the hospital's merged structure at the point where the treatment tower's architecture was most fully integrated. It had the frequency signature of the treatment tower's official logging system — the same frequency she had learned to associate with the tower's internal documentation during the years she had observed it.
She could read it.
She read it.
The file was extensive. It covered a period beginning when Shin-woo was fifteen and ending three months before the trial. It contained the treatment tower's internal assessment of the subject's progress — which was not progress in the direction of healing, she confirmed, reading the clinical language with the same anger she had always felt about this, the anger that had been sitting in her files for seven years. The file contained the tower's conclusion: the subject had been prepared for deployment as a controlled weapon, and the deployment had been interrupted by the subject's continued failure to achieve complete compliance with the management protocols, and the recommended resolution was removal of the subject from active use and replacement with a more manageable variant.
The trial had been the implementation of the recommended resolution.
She stood in the pharmacy and read this and felt the anger in its most specific form: the anger of someone who had suspected the full picture for years and was now seeing the whole of it for the first time.
She catalogued the pharmaceuticals. She packed what was needed.
She went to the corridor entrance where Shin-woo was standing.
"There is a file in the mana-overlay," she said. "Attached to the hospital's merged architecture. Treatment tower records — the internal records, not the official ones." She paused. "I read it."
He looked at her.
"Do you want to know what it says."
He was quiet for a moment.
"Yes," he said.
She told him. All of it, in the flat factual register she used for things that needed to be said accurately rather than softened. She watched his instability reading as she spoke — it rose to eighty-one at the trial section and then, slowly, as she finished, fell back to seventy-four.
When she was done, he looked at the ceiling of the merged corridor — where the hospital's fluorescent panel infrastructure was visible through the stone-and-iron of the treatment tower's construction — for a long moment.
"They planned it from the beginning," he said.
"Yes."
"The garrison. The northern campaigns. All of it."
"Yes. The trial was not a response to your actions. It was the final stage of a long plan." She paused. "You were never the problem. You were the resource they could not fully control, and the trial was the disposal mechanism for a resource that had outlived its usefulness to them."
He said nothing for a long time.
Then he turned and walked toward the building's exit, and she walked beside him, and they came out into the altered afternoon of Hanseo carrying the pharmaceuticals that the medical group needed, and the instability reading settled at seventy-one by the time they reached the street.
Shin-woo said, still moving: "They made the weapon and couldn't control the weapon and called the weapon a monster."
"Yes," she said.
"And the charges were the formal documentation of the monster narrative."
"Yes."
He was quiet for another block.
"They were," he said, "extraordinarily thorough."
"Yes," she said. "And it still didn't work."
He looked at her.
"You got out," she said. "The garrison was secured. The weapon they made did exactly what a weapon does — it protected the territory it was pointed at. And then it walked away and they couldn't explain why a weapon would do that, so they called it a malfunction." She paused. "Their documentation is very thorough. Their understanding of what they actually created is not."
Shin-woo's instability reading: sixty-eight.
He said, very quietly: "What did they create."
She thought about how to answer this accurately.
"Someone who spent ten years being told his only value was his power," she said, "and who still, when he had the choice, used the power to protect people rather than to take what the power could have taken. Someone who walked out of a room that was designed to break him and went directly to work protecting the people he had been assigned to protect." She paused. "That's not a malfunction. That's a person. They built a person and called it a weapon because they couldn't use it the way they wanted."
He did not answer.
But his instability reading was sixty-six by the time they delivered the pharmaceuticals to the medical group, and it was still sixty-six when they rejoined the shelter group an hour later, and it was still there when Do-yun sat down in the evening and began updating her notes and thought: *there is more than one kind of record. I have been keeping one kind for ten years. He has a right to know what is in it.*
