She did not go to the roof the next morning.
This was significant only because she had gone to the roof every morning for four days — the elevated position gave her better mana-sight range, and the better range gave her earlier warning on Stage activations, and the earlier warning was tactically valuable. She had a routine. She was someone who maintained routines because routines were efficient and efficiency was how she managed the accumulated demand of a situation that had been requiring everything she had for nineteen days.
She went to the small inner courtyard instead.
The courtyard was enclosed by the building on three sides, which reduced the mana-sight range significantly. She knew this. She chose it anyway, which meant she was choosing the reduced utility of the courtyard over the utility of the roof, which meant she was making a choice that was not operationally optimal.
She sat with her back against the courtyard wall and let the mana-sight run at passive and thought about the Chronicler's explanation and the System notification and the anchor and the substrate and the accurate account of things.
The accurate account of things:
The anchor had formed because she had watched Shin-woo and cared about him for ten years. The anchor's formation had created the bridge between worlds. The bridge between worlds had created the conditions for the Unreal event. The Unreal event had disrupted two thousand eight hundred and forty-seven people's lives.
She ran this chain of causation and she thought: *the Chronicler said this was not my fault. Shin-woo said it too. The System exploited what existed. I didn't cause the exploitation.*
She thought: *yes. And I built the thing that was exploited.*
This was where the chain stopped having a clean answer.
She had not intended to build a bridge between worlds. She had not known what the sustained observation was doing to the mana-structure of two realities. She had simply been a person who watched something for a long time and cared about it, which was a form of human activity so ordinary that it could not be called exceptional, let alone criminal.
But the people in the medical shelter three streets over had injuries. The survivors in the eastern district had been in darkness during the Dark Nights. The buildings in the western section had been partially restructured by Dungeon-ization and would not go back to what they had been.
She had not caused any of that with malice. She had not caused any of it with intent.
She had caused it by being a person who loved someone.
She sat with this for a long time.
The mana-flows in the courtyard moved in the slow patterns of a space that was not directly adjacent to any active Dungeon zone, the ambient energy of the altered city doing its adjusted cycling. She tracked it without thinking about it, the passive monitoring that had become as automatic as breathing.
Shin-woo's instability reading: seventy-four.
She had not seen him this morning. She had heard him — in the building's ambient sound, she could identify his movement patterns — and she had registered that he was in the main room, that he had been to the kitchen, that he was now on the building's upper floor. She had registered all of this in the background while she sat in the courtyard and thought about causation.
The reading had been sixty-nine yesterday at this hour.
She thought: *the five-point increase in four hours is likely my absence from the morning routine. We have been in close proximity for sufficient time that changes to the routine affect the reading.*
She thought: *if my presence stabilizes his reading, then my absence does the opposite.*
She thought: *this is useful information and I am not going to make it mean something that serves the argument I am currently constructing.*
She heard his footsteps.
Not looking — she had not been looking for him, had not been tracking his approach through anything other than the ambient sound awareness she maintained constantly. He came through the door from the building into the courtyard and crossed to the wall adjacent to hers and sat down.
He did not say anything.
She said: "I'm processing."
"I know," he said.
"I'm not in crisis," she said. "I'm doing the careful version of the processing."
"I know that too."
She looked at his approximate position and thought about what she was processing and whether to say any of it to him. The question of whether to say it was the same question she had been sitting with for the past hour: whether the accurate account of things required saying the part that was difficult, or whether it was sufficient to process it internally and arrive at a position without involving him.
She thought about what the Chronicler had said about the anchor being a two-point structure. She thought about what Shin-woo had said about option one and option two.
She said: "I've been sitting with the causation chain."
"I thought that might be what you were doing," he said.
"The chain ends at me," she said. "Not at the System. The System is a layer in the middle. The chain ends at: I built the thing the System exploited, and people have been hurt by what the System did with it."
He was quiet for a moment.
"The chain ends at the System," he said.
"The chain —"
"The causation chain ends at the agent of harm," he said. "The System is the agent of harm. It decided to exploit the thing that existed. The thing that existed before the System acted had no harmful effects." He paused. "I know this argument. I've made it to myself, about myself, regarding the curse. The curse is something I have. It has capacity for harm. The System told my world for years that the capacity was the same as the intent, that having the capacity meant I would cause the harm." Another pause. "You know why that argument is wrong. You told it to me."
She had told it to him. She had built arguments for him against that specific logic.
He was using those arguments now, against the same logic, applied to her.
She sat with this.
"It's not the same," she said. "The curse is something you were born with. The anchor is something I built through active sustained behavior."
"You built it without knowing you were building it," he said. "You built it by existing as the kind of person you are — someone who watches carefully and cares about what she watches. You did not build a bridge between worlds. You built attention. The System took the attention and made it into a bridge."
She thought about this.
"You're saying the same thing the Chronicler said," she said.
"I'm saying it differently," he said. "Because you heard it from the Chronicler and you're still sitting in this courtyard, which suggests the Chronicler's version didn't reach the part that needed to be reached."
She was quiet for a moment.
Then she said: "The part that needed to be reached."
"The part where the chain ends at you," he said, "is not about causation. It's about guilt. Those are different functions." He paused. "You are not guilty of building the bridge because you did not know you were building a bridge. You are not guilty of the harm the System caused because you did not cause the harm. The feeling that you should be guilty is not evidence that you are." Another pause. "I was told I should feel guilty for existing for twenty years. The certainty of the feeling is not the same as the accuracy of the feeling."
She thought about all the arguments she had made to him over the past weeks about the relationship between the feeling of guilt and the reality of guilt. She thought about the ten years of files where she had tried to build an accurate account of who he was, and how much of that account had been in direct conflict with the account his world had built for him.
She said: "You're using my own arguments against me."
"Yes," he said. "You made good arguments. They apply to you."
She thought about the accuracy of the statement.
She thought: *the good arguments apply to me. This is what the good arguments mean — they mean that when the same error occurs with different people in it, the same correction is available.*
She said: "You came to the courtyard to say that."
"I came to the courtyard because your reading changed," he said. "And because I know what you look like when you're doing the careful version of the processing versus when you're done with it." He paused. "You weren't done."
She thought about what it meant that he knew the difference between those two states.
She thought about what it meant that she had not known he would come and had not planned for him to come and he had come anyway, correctly, at the right time with the right thing.
"I'm not entirely done," she said. "But I'm — further along than I was."
"That's sufficient," he said.
They sat in the courtyard for a while in the quiet of people who had said the necessary things and were now allowing the time for the said things to settle. The mana-flows cycled through the enclosed space. His reading: seventy-one. Falling.
She said: "The five-point increase this morning."
"I noticed," he said.
"It's related to my absence from the morning routine."
"Probably," he said.
"I'm noting it as data."
"I'm noting that you're noting it."
She thought about what he was noting that she was noting.
"We should go back in," she said. "The System notification said the window is not unlimited."
"Yes," he said.
They went back in. His reading continued to fall. Hers — she tracked her own mana-state when she could, the rough version that the mana-sight allowed — had something in it that was different from the morning's. Not resolved. But different. The particular difference of something that has been held carefully and is now being held more correctly.
Ha-rin met them at the door. She looked at both of them and said nothing, which was the response Do-yun had come to read as *I see what's happening and I'm giving it the space it needs.*
Then Ha-rin said: "Jeong-su found a building two blocks east with a better defensive perimeter. Yu-jin wants to know if we should relocate before the next activation."
Operational. Good.
"Yes," Do-yun said. "Let's look at it."
And they did.
