The building they found was a former community center on the edge of the residential district — three stories, solid construction from the previous decade, partially Dungeon-ized on the ground level in a way that had actually strengthened the structural integrity rather than compromising it. Do-yun had identified it through the mana flows: the ground floor's elevated energy density created a natural deterrent for lower-tier creatures, which meant the upper floors were functionally quiet.
Yu-jin had organized the survivor group with the efficiency of someone who had, before yesterday, been doing something that required organizational competence. She did not know what — she had not asked yet. She knew that he moved through the logistics of shelter establishment with a practiced economy that suggested he was used to being the most functional person in a chaotic situation, and that Min Ha-rin, the teenager who had attached herself to the group's edge, was watching him with the particular attention of someone who found competence reassuring.
Do-yun appreciated the organization. It meant she did not have to provide it.
Shin-woo had taken the top floor.
Not the top floor as shelter — he had gone up to the roof access stairwell, the highest point he could reach, and she understood this was reconnaissance rather than retreat. He was mapping the environment. It was the first thing he always did in a new position, in any situation, in any configuration of danger: he found the highest available point and looked from it until he understood the ground beneath him.
She gave him forty minutes.
Then she climbed to the third floor and found the stairwell access door propped open with a piece of rubble, and went through it, and sat on the top step of the stairwell with her back against the wall and her cane across her knees and waited.
He came down from the roof after another ten minutes.
He saw her on the step and stopped. The pause was brief — the assessment pause, cataloguing her position as non-threatening — and then he came down the remaining stairs and sat on the step across from her, which put the stairwell between them: not a large space, but enough.
"You have questions," she said.
"I have a list," he said.
"I know. I've been thinking about how to answer them." A pause. "You should know that I've been thinking about this for longer than today. I knew, at some point, that if we ever met — that there would be things I would need to explain. I spent time on how to explain them. Some of the explanations are better than others."
He looked at her with the assessing look.
"Start with the ones that are most relevant to our immediate situation," he said.
Pragmatic. Expected.
"The core fact," she said, "is this: for ten years, every night when I slept, I saw your life. Not all of it — not every moment, not every detail. But the significant events. The battles. The political decisions. The losses." She paused. "I watched the border campaigns. I watched the territorial negotiations that were conducted in bad faith from the other side. I watched the night at the northern pass that became the central charge in your trial."
He was still.
"I know what actually happened at the pass," she said. "I know why you made the choice you made. I know that you could have retreated with the military forces and let the civilian settlement absorb the incursion, and that you chose not to, and that no one has ever presented that choice as a choice because presenting it as a choice would require acknowledging that your judgment was correct and the official position was —" She stopped. "I'm not trying to relitigate your trial. I'm telling you that I know. Because you should know that someone knows."
Shin-woo was quiet for a long time.
When he spoke, his voice had the flatness he used when he was being careful. "You said you watched me. As a child."
"From around the age of fifteen, based on what I know of your history."
"For ten years."
"Yes."
"And you believe this was —" He paused. "Involuntary."
"Completely. I couldn't control it, couldn't stop it. The ability activated the same night I lost my sight and it never deactivated." Another pause. "I know how it sounds. I'm not asking you to accept it immediately. I'm telling you what's true and you can arrive at your own conclusions on your own timeline."
He was quiet again. She had learned to read the duration of his silences as a rough measure of how much processing a statement required — short silence meant categorized, filed, moving on; long silence meant something that didn't fit the existing frameworks and needed new architecture. This was a long silence.
"The ability to see my instability," he said finally.
"Part of the mana-sight. I can see the reading in real time."
"And the third ability. The one you won't explain yet."
"It's called Empathic Resonance by the System. It allows me to —" She chose the words carefully. "To reach into your conscious state and provide a stabilizing presence when you're approaching the threshold. I used a passive form of it when I spoke to you in the intersection. The active form requires proximity and physical contact and I don't think we're at a point in this —" She stopped. "In this situation where that level of contact is appropriate without discussion."
Another long silence.
"What does it cost you," he said.
She had not expected that to be his first question about the third ability.
"Each activation absorbs some of your instability into my own system," she said. "Not permanently — it dissipates. But during the dissipation period it affects my cognition. Sustained or repeated use can cause loss of consciousness."
"So it harms you."
"In the short term. Temporarily."
"And you used it on me in the intersection without discussing this."
"It was passive — the lowest possible activation level. The cost was minimal." She paused. "I was making a judgment call. You were at ninety-five percent and I was the only thing available."
He looked at her with a quality of attention that was difficult to categorize. It was not anger — she had seen his anger in various forms over ten years and this was not it. It was something more interior. Something that she thought, tentatively, was the look of someone recalibrating what they understood about someone else's willingness to assume cost on their behalf.
"You will not use it without telling me," he said.
Not a question. Not a request.
"Even the passive form," he added. "If you intend to absorb something of mine, I should know."
She thought about the operational situations in which this constraint would be difficult to honor. She thought about the fact that he was asking for it, which meant he understood he was asking for something that wasn't purely practical — that he was asking to be informed, to be consulted, to have a say in what was done with him. Or to him.
"Agreed," she said. "I'll tell you."
He nodded once.
Then: "The knowledge in your memory. The ten years."
"Yes."
"You know operational details about my fighting patterns. My weaknesses. The curse — its triggers, its behavior under different conditions."
"Yes."
"This makes you tactically valuable."
"That's why I said it in the intersection. Operational reason."
"And not-operational reasons," he said.
Her breath was careful. "You mentioned those."
"I asked about them."
"I know." A pause. "I'll answer them. But not all at once. Some of the not-operational reasons are —" She thought about how to say it. "They're mine first. I need to decide how much of them to give you before I know better what you do with things people give you."
He was quiet for a long moment.
"That is," he said, "a reasonable position."
She had not expected him to say that either. The acknowledgment landed somewhere she was not prepared for it to land.
"I will be direct with you," he said, after a moment. "I don't trust you. I find you useful, and I find some of what you say credible, and I recognize that your abilities are relevant to my survival here. That is my current position. It may change."
"I know," she said. "I wasn't expecting trust yet."
"You seem very certain about what to expect from me," he said. There was something in his voice that was not quite dry humor — something in that direction, something she had heard briefly in very specific moments over ten years, usually when he was talking to someone he found unexpectedly interesting.
"I have had," she said, carefully, "quite a lot of time to develop expectations."
A pause.
"Ten years," he said.
"Ten years."
The stairwell was quiet for a moment. Below them, the sounds of the survivor group settling into the second floor — someone moving furniture, Yu-jin's voice in the organized register he used when he was assigning tasks, Ha-rin's quieter responses.
"The terms," Shin-woo said. "For the alliance."
"I had anticipated there would be terms."
"You are with me because you are useful and because the System has designated us as a paired unit. That is the formal basis. Not obligation beyond that. Not —" He paused. "Not whatever the other reasons are that you have not yet explained."
"Understood."
"You will provide tactical intelligence from your ability. I will provide combat capability. Neither of us owes the other more than the mission requires."
"Understood."
"And you will not put yourself in front of creatures without more warning than you gave me last time."
She thought of pointing out that he had specifically said *more warning*, not *no warning*, which was a distinction that mattered. She decided he knew it was a distinction and had made it deliberately.
"I'll do my best," she said.
"That is not a commitment."
"No," she said. "It isn't. Because I don't know what I'll be willing to do until I'm in the situation. I can commit to telling you what I plan to do when I have enough time to tell you. I can't commit to never making a judgment call in the field."
He looked at her for a moment.
"Honest," he said.
"I try to be."
"Most people are not honest about the limits of their commitments."
"I know," she said. "I've watched a lot of people make promises they couldn't keep."
The System's notification arrived in both their overlays simultaneously: *Mission available: Secure Central Station. Estimated Stage class: B. Time until mandatory activation: 18 hours. Recommendation: rest and preparation.*
Shin-woo read it in his language. She read it in hers.
"Central Station," she said. "I know it. I can map the interior from memory — I've walked it hundreds of times. The standard layout, the access points, the emergency exits." A pause. "It will be different now, but the bones will be the same."
He nodded once.
"Rest," he said. "We use the eighteen hours."
He stood and went back down the stairs toward the second floor, where the others were.
Do-yun sat in the stairwell for another minute after he left, with her hands in her lap and the mana-flows moving through the building around her, and thought about the terms he had set — practical, precise, bounded — and thought about the not-operational reasons she had not yet explained, and thought that the terms were probably the right beginning. The foundation before the architecture.
She had watched him build things on adequate foundations for ten years.
She knew how he worked.
