The bookshop near the north gate had the particular quality of bookshops that had been in the same location for a long time — dense shelves, slightly dim, the smell of paper that had accumulated over decades into something that smelled less like individual books and more like reading itself.
Mira went there on a Wednesday afternoon looking for a source Thorne had cited in his latest Thursday preparation notes, something about the history of Lorien Bay's infrastructure development in the post-war period. The book was obscure enough that the library didn't have it; the bookshop might.
It did. She found it in the local history section, second shelf from the top, behind a copy of the same book. She was standing on tiptoe reaching for it when she heard a voice behind her.
"I was looking for that one."
She turned.
Irene Ashbourne, hands in the pockets of the oversized jacket, looking at the book in Mira's hand with the expression of someone who was slightly annoyed and mostly amused.
"Urban history," Mira said.
"For a school project," Irene said, which was technically plausible and entirely suspicious given what Mira knew about what Noel had been working on lately.
"Take it," Mira said, holding the book out. "I can request it through the library."
"Don't be weird about it," Irene said, which was so direct it was almost funny. "We can both look at it." She paused. "There's a café. On the corner."
---
The café on the corner had good light and mediocre coffee and a window that looked out on the November street. They sat across from each other with the book between them — neither had opened it yet — and Irene wrapped both hands around her cup with the unselfconsciousness of someone who had not yet learned to be self-conscious about how they occupied space.
"You've been working with Noel a lot," Irene said.
"We have a project," Mira said. "Interdisciplinary. It finishes in three weeks."
"I know. He talks about it." Irene looked at the book. "He talks about the project and he talks about the investigation and he talks about—" She paused, seeming to decide something. "He talks about you."
Mira held her coffee cup.
"What does he say?" she said.
"That you're good at finding things. That you see things in photographs that other people miss." Irene looked at her directly. "He said you have a particular relationship with the bridge." A pause. "He didn't say more than that. But the way he said it."
"The way he said it," Mira said.
"Like it mattered," Irene said simply. "He doesn't talk like that about most things. He talks about design constantly. He talks about the investigation now. He talks about—" She stopped. "He talked about his dad the other day, which he almost never does."
Mira looked at the window.
"What did he say?" she said carefully.
"That he'd told someone about his dad. A person he'd told something real." Irene watched her. "He didn't say who."
The November street outside was moving through its Wednesday afternoon, pedestrians and a tram, ordinary. Mira looked at it and felt the specific dissonance of being discussed by someone who didn't know she'd been there for the conversation being discussed.
"He told me," she said. "About his father. At the location visit."
Irene was quiet for a moment.
"He doesn't tell people that early," she said.
"I know."
Irene looked at her with the particular attention of a sixteen-year-old who was smarter than most adults gave her credit for, which was true of Irene in both timelines.
"How do you know?" she said.
Mira looked back at her. She thought about the rules — what remained of them, the current version, the acknowledgment that she didn't know what the right thing was to do but was trying to be careful while finding out.
"I know him," she said. "A little. Through the project." A pause. "Some people you understand quickly."
Irene considered this for a long moment.
"He's careful," she said finally. "He doesn't usually let people understand him quickly. He waits." She paused. "You make him not wait."
Mira said nothing.
"I'm not — I don't mean that as a warning," Irene said. "I meant it as — I don't know. An observation." She looked at the book. "I've been watching out for him since Dad died. It's a habit. Sometimes it's useful and sometimes it's just—" She made a gesture. "Watching for no reason."
"It's not no reason," Mira said. "It's love."
Irene looked at her. The directness was the same as Noel's — the same grey-blue eyes, the same quality of assessment.
"Yes," Irene said.
They sat for a moment.
"The investigation," Mira said. "You know he's working on something beyond coursework."
"I know he's coming home late and leaving early and doing something he's not telling me about," Irene said. "Which is his right. He's twenty. I'm not his parent." A pause. "But I'm his person. I notice things."
"His person," Mira said.
"We don't have a lot of family. It's just us and Mum, and Mum works evenings most of the time." Irene wrapped her hands tighter around the cup. "After Dad I decided I wasn't going to let anything else just happen without me noticing. So I notice."
Mira thought about the other timeline. About the funeral. About Irene's face when she'd looked across the room and found Mira there.
*You. You're why he's not here.*
She hadn't been wrong. She'd been simplifying a complicated truth into something that fit inside grief. But she hadn't been entirely wrong.
"I won't let him go somewhere dangerous alone," she said. It came out more certain than she'd planned. "That's what the investigation is. Making sure that if he finds something difficult, he finds it in a way that doesn't put him at risk."
Irene looked at her.
"That sounds like you've thought about it a lot," she said.
"I have," she said.
Irene was quiet for a moment — processing this, she could tell. The particular quality of someone who had been handed more certainty than they expected and was deciding what to do with it.
"Okay," Irene said finally. "I believe you." A pause. "I don't know why I believe you, but I do."
"Because it's true," Mira said simply.
"Yes," Irene said. "I think so." She reached for the book. "We should actually look at this. I have a project to reference it for." A pause — the almost-humor that was also a family trait. "Unlike some people who probably have memorized it already."
Mira laughed. Real, quiet, the kind that surprised her.
"I haven't read this specific one," she said.
"Good," Irene said. "Then we can both learn something."
They spent the next hour with the book between them — Irene taking notes for her project with the focused attention of someone who took school seriously, Mira reading the infrastructure section and finding, in the chapter on the post-war bridge network, a reference to the original crossing that Thorne didn't have in his files.
She photographed the page on her phone — habit, documentation, both.
"Useful?" Irene said, watching her.
"Yes," she said.
"Good." Irene closed her notebook. "He's going to be okay. Whatever you're all working on." It wasn't a question.
Mira looked at her — at the oversized jacket and the grey-blue eyes and the quality of attention that was its own kind of inheritance.
"We're going to make sure of it," she said.
Irene nodded once, with the small decisive quality that was also, apparently, a family trait.
They paid separately and walked out into the November street and went in different directions, and Mira carried the photographed page and the conversation and Irene's quiet *I believe you* through the rest of the day, a small warm weight alongside the other small warm things she was learning to carry.
Small things. She was getting good at the small things.
They were adding up to something.
That evening she added the infrastructure reference to the shared folder with a note: *New source — local history, post-war bridge network. Chapter 4. Relevant to the original crossing's design history and the continuity of the design decisions.*
Then she added: *Worth reading if you haven't. I can loan you the book.*
Noel replied within the hour: *I'd like that. Thursday.*
Thursday was becoming a word that meant more than it said. She'd been aware of it for a while.
---
She went to the bridge on Thursday morning before the Thorne meeting — not to document, just to look. She did this occasionally now, not on any schedule, just when she felt the need to see the actual structure rather than the photographs of it. The photographs were evidence. The bridge itself was the thing.
It was early, barely seven, the light flat and cold off the lake. She stood on the eastern span — not in the dead zone, at the edge of it — and looked at the access panel.
It was fully closed.
She photographed it. Closed, flush with the railing post, no gap. She noted the date and time in her notebook: *Thursday, 7:12 AM. Access panel closed. Previously ajar.*
Someone had closed it since her last visit. In the interim period — two weeks since she'd photographed it open — it had been accessed again and this time closed properly.
She looked at the three replacement units. Unchanged, as far as she could tell. The newer mounting hardware still slightly different from the surrounding original installation.
She walked the eastern span twice, slowly, looking at everything she'd been looking at for weeks. The familiar geography of a place she'd been reading as a document.
Nothing new.
She thought: whoever had been maintaining the modification knew that the access panel being ajar was sloppy. They came back and fixed the sloppiness. They were paying attention.
She thought: which means they're paying attention to the bridge, which means they may be paying attention to who else is paying attention to the bridge.
She added to her notes: *Access panel closed — recent access, deliberate. Someone is maintaining the bridge actively. Be careful about frequency of visits.*
Then, because she was on the bridge and the morning was cold and grey and the water below was doing its November thing, she stood at the railing for a moment and just let herself be there — not documenting, not assessing. Just present.
She did this sometimes. Stood in places that had weight for her and let them have it — let the weight be what it was rather than always converting it into something functional.
The bridge was a place that had taken something from her.
It was also, now, a place she was taking something back from.
Both true at once. That was what palimpsests were — all the versions present simultaneously.
She turned and walked west, back across the bridge toward the city, and she had the Thursday morning ahead of her — seminar, studio, Thorne at three-thirty, Noel at four-fifteen — and she walked into it at a pace that felt, for the first time in weeks, like she knew where she was going.
---
She told Thorne about the closed access panel at the three-thirty meeting, and he noted it with the careful attention he gave all new information. Noel arrived at four-fifteen exactly.
She handed him the urban history book.
He took it with both hands — careful, the way he handled things that were sources.
"Thank you," he said.
"Chapter four," she said. "The post-war bridge section."
He nodded and put it in his bag, and Thorne asked for the week's update, and the meeting began with its usual focused efficiency, and she let herself simply be in it — in the room, in the work, in the particular quality of Thursday afternoons in Thorne's office that had become, over the weeks, one of the reliable things.
After the meeting, on the porch of the theory building — no rain today, just cold — Noel said: "You went to the bridge this morning."
She looked at him. "How do you know?"
"Your note about the access panel. Seven-twelve AM." A pause. "You didn't tell me you were going."
She looked at the campus path. "I was just looking. I go sometimes. Not to document."
"I know." The quality of something he'd been thinking about. "I just—" He stopped. Started again. "If they're paying attention to who's at the bridge, going alone is a risk. I'd rather know when you're going."
She held his gaze.
"Why?" she said. Not challenging — genuinely asking.
He looked at her steadily. "Because then I can know you got back," he said.
She stood with that for a moment.
"Okay," she said. "I'll tell you."
"Thank you," he said.
They stood on the porch in the November cold, and she thought: in the other timeline, he had died running toward her because she'd called and he'd come. She had been trying, for months, to prevent that by keeping the distance between them.
She had kept no distance.
He was standing on a porch asking to know when she went to the bridge because he wanted to know she got back, and she was telling him she would tell him, and the original premise — that distance would keep him safe — had been wrong in the specific way that the simplest premises were wrong: it had been a reduction of a complex system to a single variable and then a policy built on the single variable, and the complex system had done what complex systems did, which was to resist simplification and continue being complex.
*Don't save him by disappearing.* The first message. The number that didn't exist.
She hadn't disappeared. She was here. And he was asking to know when she went to the bridge.
Maybe that was what the message had meant. Not a warning about the investigation's strategy — a reminder that presence was itself a form of protection. That knowing where someone was, and being known in return, was the opposite of the bridge-in-the-rain.
She said: "I'll tell you."
He said: "Thank you."
They stood in the November cold a moment longer, and then he said Thursday same time and she said Thursday same time and they both knew they'd see each other before Thursday because they always did now.
She walked home through the city she was learning to love again, and she thought about presence and distance and the specific math of keeping someone safe, and she thought: I had it backwards for a while, but I think I'm getting it right now.
I think.
Celia was in the room when she got home, fabric spread across the bed, working on something that involved a lot of careful pinning and quiet concentration. She looked up when Mira came in.
"Good Thursday?" she said.
"Good Thursday," Mira said.
"You have the face," Celia said. "Not the math face. The other one."
"What other one?"
"The one that means something happened that you're trying to figure out where to put." Celia returned to her pinning. "You don't have to tell me. I'm just noting it."
Mira put her bag down and sat on her bed and looked at the ceiling.
"He asked me to tell him when I go to the bridge," she said. "So he knows I got back."
The room was quiet for a moment — Celia pinning, the fabric rustling.
"That's not about the investigation," Celia said.
"No," Mira said. "I don't think it is."
"What is it about?"
Mira looked at the ceiling. The white, clean, familiar ceiling of a room that had been hers for three months now and felt genuinely like somewhere she lived.
"Wanting to know someone got back," she said.
Celia was quiet for a moment. Then: "That sounds important."
"Yes," Mira said. "It does."
She stayed looking at the ceiling for a while, and Celia pinned her fabric, and the room held them both with the comfortable warmth of a space two people had been inhabiting together long enough to know how to share it.
*He wants to know I got back.*
She held that.
She was going to keep telling herself it was fine — that it was manageable, that she was being careful, that she hadn't lost track of the investigation or the timeline or the seven months she'd told herself she had.
But she was also, for the first time in three months, going to let herself consider the possibility that careful was not the only thing worth being.
That there was something else here.
And that she was, perhaps, allowed to want it.
She fell asleep faster than usual that night, and she didn't look at the ceiling for a long time first, and the tram made its last run and she was already gone, somewhere quieter.
In the morning she added to the shared folder: *Going to the bridge Friday, 8 AM. Back by 9.*
She sent it before she could think about whether she was sending it for the investigation or for something else.
His reply was there when she woke at six: *I'll meet you there.*
She looked at that for a full minute.
Then she replied: *You don't have to.*
His reply: *I know. 8 AM.*
She put her phone down and got up and got ready for the day, and she thought about the word *palimpsest* — all the versions present simultaneously — and about how the version she was in now was different from the other versions in a way she was still learning to read.
She thought: this is what it feels like to be not careful in a way that might be right.
She was going to find out.
You've reached the end of this chapter
