The interdisciplinary brief went up at noon on Thursday and by two o'clock Mira had read it three times without signing up for it.
She was not going to sign up for it. That had been her decision since Vasquez had mentioned it in the logistics meeting, and it remained her decision now, clear and uncomplicated, which was why she was still sitting in front of her laptop at two-fifteen reading the brief a fourth time.
*Joint Project: Urban Spaces and the People Who Pass Through Them. A collaboration between the Photography Department (Documentary Track) and the Urban Design program. Students will be paired across disciplines to document and analyze the relationship between designed spaces and human behavior in Lorien Bay. Six locations will be assigned; teams will produce both a photographic series and an urban analysis report. Duration: eight weeks.*
She closed the tab.
She opened it again.
The project was, objectively, exactly the kind of work she was here to do. The documentary track was her program. Urban spaces and the people who passed through them was, in a very literal sense, the subject she'd spent the last seven years of her life studying — first as a student, then as a working photographer, then as someone who was trying to make sense of what a city meant when it had taken someone from you. She was not going to sign up for it because of the Urban Design program, which contained Noel Ashbourne, who she was not going to know in this timeline.
She closed the tab again.
It stayed closed for eleven minutes. She had work to do — a reading for the theory seminar, some equipment to sign out before the weekend, the contact sheets from the lake still waiting for proper annotation. She did none of it. She sat at her desk and looked at the closed browser tab and thought about the nature of decisions made in advance versus decisions made in the moment, and the uncomfortable gap between the two.
The knock on her door at two-thirty was Celia, carrying a takeaway coffee and wearing the expression she wore when she had something to say and was deciding how to say it.
"Okay," Celia said, sitting on the edge of Mira's bed without being invited, which was a Celia habit so familiar it didn't register as presumptuous. "The interdisciplinary project."
"No."
"Mira."
"I said no."
"I haven't said anything yet."
"You were going to tell me to sign up for it."
Celia looked at her steadily. "I was going to ask if you'd seen it. Because Vasquez emailed me specifically to recommend it for the documentary track, and I thought you might be interested, since urban documentary is literally what you told me you wanted to do when I asked you on the first day why you chose photography."
Mira looked at her coffee. "I'm aware of the project."
"And?"
"And I'm thinking about it."
"You've been thinking about it for two hours. Your browser history is visible from here." Celia nodded toward the laptop. "You've loaded that page four times."
"Five," Mira said, without thinking.
Celia's eyebrows went up.
"It's a good project," Mira said, which was the truth. "I just — I'm not sure it fits with what I want to do this semester."
"What do you want to do this semester?"
Mira didn't have an answer for that, which was itself an answer. She wanted to investigate Morrow Bridge without anyone knowing she was investigating it. She wanted to understand what had happened and what had been covered up and whether there was anything she could do, in this timeline, to make sure the people responsible were held accountable. She wanted to do all of this while maintaining a careful, uninvolved distance from Noel Ashbourne.
None of which she could say to Celia.
"Documentary work," she said. "The spaces the city doesn't show you in the tourism brochures. The gaps."
Celia considered this. "That sounds exactly like the brief."
It did. That was the problem.
"I'll think about it," Mira said.
"The sign-up closes Friday."
"I know."
"And you'd be paired with someone from Urban Design, which could be useful if your work ends up involving architectural spaces or—"
"Celia."
"I'm just saying."
"I know what you're saying. I said I'll think about it."
Celia accepted this with a shrug that communicated, very precisely, that she thought Mira was being unnecessarily complicated about something simple, but was choosing not to push. She finished her coffee, said something about a studio session at four, and left.
Mira sat for a moment in the quiet she'd left behind.
Then she opened the browser tab and looked at the sign-up form and thought about what she was actually doing, which was trying to make a decision in week one of a semester based on the emotional logic of a life she'd already lived. She was trying to avoid a particular outcome by avoiding a particular person, as if futures were simply the sum of the people you chose to know and the distances you kept from them.
But she'd already talked to him twice. Once in the registration hall doorway, which didn't count, and once on the stone steps by the lake, which she kept telling herself also didn't count. And neither time had she felt her resolve crumbling in any dramatic or irreversible way. She'd simply talked to him. She'd said something about photography and he'd said something back and she'd walked away and her heart had been doing things she didn't have language for, but she'd walked away.
Perhaps she was overestimating the danger. Perhaps seven years of loving someone was not as impossible to undo as she thought, given sufficient distance and sufficient care. Perhaps she could work near him, briefly, professionally, in the context of a structured academic project, and maintain the necessary separation between what she remembered and what was actually happening.
Perhaps. The word had the quality of things you say when you've already made a decision and you're looking for permission.
She did not sign up for the interdisciplinary project.
She signed up for the darkroom intensive instead, which ran on the same days, and which she had absolutely no good reason to take since she already knew everything in it, and then she went to the equipment room and checked out a light meter she didn't need and walked back to the photography building the long way, which happened to take her past the Urban Design hall.
She didn't go in. She didn't slow down.
But through the window of the ground-floor studio — the room with the long tables where students spread out their models and drawings — she saw him. Standing at one of the tables, bent over something, talking to another student. His hands were moving again in the way they did when he was explaining something about space. The other student was nodding.
Mira kept walking.
The photography building was three minutes from the Urban Design hall. She walked it in two and a half, which meant she was walking faster than usual, which she filed under things she was not going to examine closely.
In the darkroom, she hung up her jacket and began the methodical work of setting up for a session. The smell of the chemicals was familiar and grounding — acetic acid and developer and the particular smell of film that had been processed and was now becoming something permanent. She'd always loved this room. The red light, the quiet, the way the process was both chemical and alchemical, transforming latent images into visible ones through a series of steps that required precision and patience and a willingness to wait.
She developed the roll from that afternoon's walk — three frames of the exterior of the Urban Design building, which she'd taken without really deciding to, before she reached the window. The building's facade in the late afternoon light, which was unremarkable architecturally and entirely forgettable as a subject. She'd taken three frames of it. She wasn't sure why.
The prints came out clean and technically correct and completely uninspired.
She stood looking at them under the red light and thought: this is what it looks like when you photograph something because you're looking for a reason to walk past a window.
She pinned them to the line anyway, because they existed and she'd made them and there was something honest in letting the evidence stand.
On the way back from the darkroom, she stopped at the department notice board. The interdisciplinary sign-up sheet was posted there too, a physical copy, with a pen hanging from a string.
Five names on it so far. Two from documentary track, three from Urban Design.
She looked at it for a moment. Then she took the pen, signed her name, and walked back to her room before she could change her mind.
She would be professional. She would be focused on the work. She would maintain, within the structured context of an academic collaboration, the careful distance she'd promised herself. People collaborated on projects without becoming entangled. It happened constantly. It was normal.
In her room, she opened her notebook and wrote, under the entry from two nights ago: *I signed up for the project.*
Beneath that, after a pause: *I know what I'm doing.*
Beneath that, after a longer pause: *I'm not sure I know what I'm doing.*
She closed the notebook, lay on her bed, and looked at the white ceiling for a while.
In the darkroom, under the red light, three photographs of an unremarkable building were drying on the line. Outside, the tram ran its evening route along the shore. Somewhere in the Urban Design building, or perhaps already gone for the day, Noel Ashbourne was doing whatever he did when he wasn't standing at tables explaining things with his hands.
She had signed up for a project that would put her in the same room as him for eight weeks.
She thought about what the tin message from an unknown number had said, the one she hadn't received yet, the one she was now fairly certain was coming. *Don't save him by disappearing.*
Perhaps that was the logic. Perhaps the timeline required her presence, not her absence. Perhaps trying to stay away was itself the mistake.
Or perhaps she was constructing a rationale for something she'd already decided to do for entirely different reasons, and the honest thing would be to admit that.
She admitted it to the ceiling, since the ceiling seemed like the least judgmental available audience.
Then she got up, made tea, and started on the reading for the theory seminar, and did not think about Noel Ashbourne any more than she could reasonably help, which was not very much, but was at least a number she could work with.
The theory seminar reading was about the ethics of documentary photography — specifically, about the question of consent and representation in images of public space. The author argued that photographing people in cities raised questions that were not resolved simply by the fact that they were in public, that there was something worth examining in the gap between the legal right to photograph and the ethical responsibility of the photographer to their subjects.
Mira read it twice, which she would have done anyway because it was good, and then a third time because something in it was making her think about things she hadn't expected the reading to make her think about.
She was here, in this timeline, in possession of information about people who hadn't given her that information in this life. She knew things about Noel that he hadn't told her — not yet, not in this version, possibly not ever. She knew his wound, his history, the shape of his grief. She knew how he made coffee, which side of the bed he preferred, the specific way he said her name when he was trying not to show that he was worried about her.
None of that knowledge had been given to her here. It had been accumulated in another life and carried forward into this one like luggage she hadn't declared at the border.
The reading's author wrote: *The ethical photographer considers not just what she has the right to see, but what seeing costs the person seen.*
Mira put the book down.
This was a thing she hadn't let herself think about directly. She'd been so focused on the practical question — how to keep him alive — that she'd been avoiding the more uncomfortable one, which was what it meant to navigate a relationship with someone using knowledge they hadn't freely given her. She knew him. He didn't know her. That asymmetry wasn't just logistically complicated; it was, potentially, the kind of thing the reading's author would have something to say about.
She thought about the conversation on the steps. She'd told him something true about her photography — the right-angle preference, the reason for it — and he'd engaged with it genuinely, and for a few minutes they'd talked like two people who didn't know each other but were beginning to. Which was exactly what they were. Except that she was also a person who knew where he'd been standing during their first autumn together, and what he'd said the first time he'd told her he loved her, and the specific quality of his silence in the days before the accident when he'd known something she didn't.
She picked the book back up and kept reading.
By the time she finished, it was nearly midnight. The campus had gone quiet, the tram long since done with its last run, the lake path probably empty and silver in whatever light reached it from the buildings. She sat at her desk in the small lamp-glow and thought about ethical photography and ethical knowing and the strange position she was in, which was one no author had probably written about because it was not, technically, supposed to be possible.
Here was what she kept coming back to: she hadn't asked for this. She hadn't chosen to come back with seven years of accumulated knowledge. She'd been standing on a bridge trying to let go of something and instead something had let go of her, and now she was here, and the question of what to do with what she knew was not a question she'd had the luxury of considering in advance.
So she would try to be careful with it. Not weaponize it, not use it to shortcut things that were supposed to be built slowly, not treat it as ownership when it was really just — residue. The residue of a life. Something she'd carry carefully and try not to deploy unfairly.
She wrote that in her notebook too, because it seemed like the kind of thing worth writing down.
Then she noticed the time and went to sleep, and in the morning the sign-up sheet would still have her name on it and the project would still begin in two weeks and she would deal with that when it arrived.
She had signed up. That was done. What came next would come next, and she would handle it with the same care she was trying to bring to everything else.
She was almost sure she could do that.
Almost was going to have to be enough.
The next morning, she got to the orientation meeting for the interdisciplinary project five minutes early and took a seat near the back of the room.
There were twelve students total — six from photography, six from urban design. She scanned the urban design side and found him immediately, because apparently her ability to locate him in a room was not something seven years of determined distance was going to cure overnight. He was sitting two rows over, reading something on his phone, jacket folded over the back of his chair.
He looked up when the lecturer called the room to attention.
He didn't look at her specifically. He looked at the front of the room, where the project overview was being projected on a screen, and his face had the expression of someone who was paying attention but also processing something else quietly in the background. She recognized that expression. She had a catalog of his expressions that she was trying very hard not to consult.
The pairings were announced alphabetically.
Ashbourne, Noel. Everwyn, Mira.
Of course.
She heard him say, very quietly, from two rows over: "Huh."
Not surprise exactly. More like the sound a person makes when something confirms a suspicion they'd been carrying without quite articulating it.
She looked straight ahead at the screen and kept her face very still and thought: seven months. She had seven months and a structured academic collaboration and the accumulated discipline of someone who had survived losing him once already, and she was going to be completely fine.
The lecturer dismissed them with instructions to meet their partners and exchange contact information.
Mira took a breath. Then she stood up, picked up her bag, and walked across the room to where Noel Ashbourne was already turning toward her with his hand extended and an expression she couldn't entirely read.
"Mira Everwyn," he said. Like he was trying out how her name sat in his mouth. "We met. The steps by the lake."
"We met," she confirmed.
"Small campus."
"Apparently."
He held her gaze for just a moment — that same quality of attention, slightly too focused for a stranger — and then he smiled, brief and slightly crooked, and said: "I'm glad it's you. Your angle thing. I've been thinking about it."
She should not have felt anything particular about that sentence. It was a professional observation about a photographic approach, made by a person she was going to work with on an academic project.
She felt something particular about it anyway.
"We should schedule a first meeting," she said. "Talk through the locations."
"Tomorrow afternoon?" He reached for his phone. "I have the location list if you want to see it now."
"Tomorrow's fine."
They exchanged numbers. His hand, when she handed him her phone to type in his contact, was warm and certain in the way she remembered, and she took the phone back and looked at the name he'd entered — *Noel Ashbourne, Urban Design* — and thought: there. That's done. Professional. Managed.
She was going to be completely fine.
She left the building quickly and stood outside in the October air, which was cold and honest and smelled of the lake, and she stood there until her heart settled back into its ordinary rhythm.
Fine, she told herself again.
The word had stopped being convincing somewhere around the second time she'd used it.
You've reached the end of this chapter
