She had not expected the room to be so clean.
Not recently — the cleaning had happened some time ago, with thoroughness and intent. The furniture was wrong in the small ways that indicated rearrangement: a chair placed at a slightly unnatural angle to the window, a wardrobe whose interior showed the faint outlines of objects that had been removed and not replaced. Someone had been here before Grace, and had taken things, and had been careful about it.
But careful was not the same as complete.
Grace had learned, over the past week at Ravencroft, that the manor had a particular relationship with incompleteness. Things were managed here rather than resolved. Evidence was reduced rather than eliminated. The assumption, she thought, was that people wouldn’t look — that the social weight of certain rooms and certain histories would keep them at a respectful distance.
She was not, as a rule, respectful of distances that had been set by other people’s convenience.
She went through the room methodically, starting at the door and working clockwise. The wardrobe. The writing desk. The shelving above the fireplace. The gap behind the loose panel she had noticed on her first visit — nothing there now, she had already checked. The window seat with its lift-up storage — empty except for a folded piece of old fabric that smelled of cedar and something else, something faintly sweet.
She came to the bed last.
---
Mira found it.
This was, Grace reflected, characteristic of how they worked together: Grace identified the likely locations, and Mira, who had a different spatial intelligence and a different set of intuitions, found the thing in the location Grace would have reached eventually but not yet. The base of the wardrobe, where the decorative moulding at floor level had been designed to look like a solid piece but was in fact a panel — not a secret panel, nothing so deliberate, just a section of the construction that had been done differently from the rest and which, over decades, had shifted slightly out of alignment.
Mira was on her knees examining the wardrobe base when the misalignment caught the light at an angle that showed it clearly. She pressed. The panel moved. And behind it: a small space, not much larger than a hatbox, containing a book.
"Grace," she said.
Grace was across the room in four steps.
The book was a journal — bound in dark brown leather that had gone slightly tacky with age, the clasp broken in a way that suggested it had been opened frequently rather than forced. No name on the cover. No name on the first page, which was blank. The handwriting began on the second page without preamble, in a script that was neat and controlled and had a quality Grace recognised: the quality of a person who had been taught to write carefully, who had learned that penmanship was a form of presentation.
She took it to the window and began to read.
---
The journal was not what the stories had led her to expect.
There were no declarations of love. No romantic longing, no descriptions of Cassian Ravencroft that could be read as affection or fear or anything in between. What there was, instead, was a record — meticulous, specific, practical. The kind of record a person kept when they were trying to understand a situation that was larger than they had been told.
Dates. Times. Events. Names, sometimes, though certain names appeared only as initials. And documentation of a specific and recurring activity: signings. The journal tracked every occasion on which the writer had been required to sign a document, noting the date, the parties present, the nature of the contract, the location of the signing, and — occasionally — a brief note about the circumstances.
*March 14. The D. agreement. Third signing this month. Lord M. present and Lord R. His manner was — I cannot describe it precisely. He looked at me the way one looks at a mechanism that is performing correctly. Not unkind. Not warm. Correct.*
*April 2. Another agreement. The W.R. distribution contract for the southern region. I signed where indicated. Afterward, Lord M. said I had done well. I did not understand, at the time, what doing well meant in this context.*
Grace read carefully, tracking the pattern across the entries. The signings were regular — monthly at minimum, sometimes more frequent. They involved contracts related to Winter Rose distribution, cultivation rights, and what the journal called, without elaboration, "the succession arrangements."
And woven through the practical record, in smaller handwriting that looked like it had been added later, in different ink: *"Grace."*
Not as a signature. As a notation — the way a scientist might note a variable, or a mathematician a function. *Grace* with a period after it. *Grace* as a label for something being tracked.
*Grace: third iteration this decade. Grace: legal continuity. Grace: the name on the contract.*
Grace set the journal down in her lap and looked out the window at the grey winter sky.
Elowen had understood. Not completely — the entries had the quality of someone assembling a picture from available pieces, aware that significant pieces were missing. But she had understood that "Grace" was not her name. It was her function.
---
The torn pages were distributed throughout the journal rather than concentrated in one place.
This was the first thing Grace noticed when she examined the physical object rather than just its contents: the tears were not sequential. Someone had gone through the journal and removed specific entries — not a section, not a chapter, but individual pages selected with apparent purpose. The remaining content was what was left after the selected content had been extracted.
She held the journal to the light and examined the torn edges. Clean, deliberate tears — following the binding line, not pulled roughly across. The paper had been folded slightly before removal, the crease still faintly visible in the stub that remained. This was not done in haste or anger. It was done by someone who had time and who was making choices.
She tried to read what the remaining entries implied about the missing ones. The gaps in the chronology were suggestive: pages had been removed from periods around specific events. Around the time of certain signings. Around what appeared, from context, to be a period of changed understanding — when Elowen had moved from noting *Grace: legal continuity* as an observation to something that must have been, in the missing pages, a more alarmed conclusion.
And the last entry before the final torn page:
*I do not think the signing is the last of it.*
The page after that: gone.
---
Grace was sitting with the journal in her lap, turned to that last remaining entry, when she heard the step in the corridor.
She did not close the journal or move to hide it. There was no point — she was sitting in full view of the open doorway, and whoever was outside could already see her if they were looking. She stayed still and kept her eyes on the page, and let her peripheral vision do the work.
Cassian stopped in the doorway.
He did not enter. He stood with one hand on the doorframe in the manner of someone who had not intended to stop here and had found themselves stopping without fully deciding to. His eyes went to the journal in her lap, and she watched, in her peripheral vision, the series of small adjustments that moved across his face: recognition, assessment, and then something that was neither of those things but which she did not have a word for yet.
He knew the journal existed. That much was clear. The way he looked at it was not the look of a person encountering something unexpected — it was the look of a person seeing something they had known was somewhere in this house and had not, until this moment, been entirely certain would be found.
Grace looked up.
They looked at each other for a moment.
He did not come in. He did not ask what she had found or tell her to stop or explain himself. He stood in the doorway with his hand on the frame and his expression in the particular configuration she was beginning to recognise as the one he wore when he was deciding something — and then, without deciding anything she could identify, he removed his hand from the frame and continued down the corridor.
She listened to his footsteps until they turned the corner and disappeared.
---
She sat with the journal for a long time after he left.
He had known it was there. He had not taken it — not in the weeks or months or however long it had been since Elowen’s room had been cleaned and the room had been prepared for Grace’s arrival. He could have taken it then. The panel was not difficult to find if you were looking — a thorough search of the room would have found it in under an hour, and a thorough search had clearly been conducted, given the rearranged furniture and the removed objects.
He had left it.
Grace turned this over carefully. He had left the journal, had left the music box and the note in the wall, had let her into the records room without intervention, had asked her what she needed to continue. At each point where he could have contained what she was finding, he had chosen not to.
The question was whether that was because he wanted her to find it — because her finding it served some purpose of his she hadn’t identified yet — or because some part of him had decided, at some point she also hadn’t identified, that she had the right to know.
She did not know which. She was not sure it was possible to know from inside the situation. Both were true, possibly, in different proportions.
She read the last entry one more time.
*I do not think the signing is the last of it.*
Elowen had known something was coming. She had known it with the specific quality of knowledge that came from assembling a pattern — not a single event, but a sequence. The signing, and then something else. Something after the signing that the journal did not name because the page that would have named it was gone.
Grace thought about what came after a legal instrument had served its purpose.
She thought about the locked conservatory and the new lock and the bent iron.
She thought about the five scraped names in The Thorn Hall.
She put the journal carefully back in the panel behind the wardrobe base, pressed the panel closed, and stood up.
She needed to know what Cassian knew. Not what he was willing to tell her — what he knew. The distinction was becoming important.
