She told Cassian she was going to Velmira House the way she told him most things now: directly, without seeking permission, with the clarity of a person who had decided and was informing rather than asking.
He asked one question. "Do you want me to come with you?"
"No."
He nodded. And then, because she was watching him to see if he would add anything — a qualification, a concern expressed in a way that was actually a request to reconsider — he did not add anything. He let her answer stand as a complete exchange.
She noted this. She did not comment on it. She packed her travelling case.
---
The drive to Velmira House took two and a half hours. Mira occupied the forward seat and appeared to sleep, and Grace looked out the window at the winter countryside and thought about what she was returning to and what she needed from it.
Not comfort. She was not expecting comfort from Velmira House. She had lived there for twenty-two years and had received, in that time, a kind of comfort that was conditional in ways she hadn’t examined until recently: the comfort of a house that functioned when she functioned correctly, that was warm when she was useful. She had mistaken this for the thing itself. She understood now that it was not the thing itself.
What she needed was information. Adrian was at Velmira House. Lord Maeron was at Velmira House. Whatever Adrian was planning — and he was planning something, she was as certain of this as she was certain of the Winter Rose chemistry — would be legible from the inside of his household in ways it was not legible from Ravencroft.
She also needed, she admitted to herself somewhere around the midpoint of the drive, to see the house and its people with the eyes she now had. To look at the place that had made her and understand it clearly. This was not revenge and it was not closure — both of those were more resolved than what she was going for. It was something more like: accounting. An honest reckoning with a place on its own terms.
---
Adrian was at the front steps when the carriage arrived.
He had known she was coming, which meant he had people watching Ravencroft’s comings and goings, which was information. He was dressed with the particular care that meant the arrival mattered to him, which was further information. And when he came down the steps to meet her, his expression was the one she had known her whole life: warm, genuinely pleased, carrying a note of concern that was real and was also, she now understood, strategic.
"Grace," he said. He took her hands. "You look tired. Was the journey difficult?"
"The journey was fine," she said. She let him hold her hands for a moment and assessed: the grip was the same, the warmth was the same. He had not changed. She was the one who had changed.
"Come in," he said. "Your room is ready. I had them light the fire."
She went in.
---
Her room.
It was unchanged in the way that rooms were unchanged when they had been maintained rather than inhabited: everything in its place, the surfaces clean, the curtains the same ones she had grown up with. The fire that had been lit was burning well. The writing desk was in the same position by the window. The bookshelves held the same books in the same order.
Mira moved through the room with the automatic efficiency of someone performing a task that required no thought, opening the windows briefly for air and then closing them, unpacking the travelling case with the careful order Grace preferred. Grace sat on the edge of the bed and looked at the room.
She had grown up here. She had slept in this bed for twenty-two years, had sat at that desk, had looked out those windows at the same view of the Velmira garden in every season. This room had been, in every practical sense, home.
She was sitting in it now and it felt like wearing a garment that had fit her once and no longer did: recognisable, still attached to memory, but the wrong shape for who she currently was.
"Mira," she said.
Mira looked up from the unpacking.
Grace got up and went to the writing desk. The bottom drawer — she knew what was in the bottom drawer, had always known, the vague awareness of things stored and not examined. She opened it.
The practice books were there. A stack of them — six, seven, the composition notebooks she had been given from age six or so for her penmanship exercises. She took out the top one and opened it.
The first page: her handwriting, small and careful and young, the effort of a child learning. And repeated, line by line, across the ruled pages:
*Grace Velmira. Grace Velmira. Grace Velmira.*
Fifteen lines to a page. She turned to the next page. Fifteen more lines. She turned to the middle of the notebook: the handwriting was larger now, more confident, the specific signature she had been producing for twenty years beginning to take its settled form.
*Grace Velmira. Grace Velmira. Grace Velmira.*
She looked at the size of the handwriting on the first page. Small. Very small. The letters of a child who had just learned to hold a pen.
Six years old. She had been six years old when someone decided she needed to begin practicing this signature.
Mira was watching her. Grace closed the notebook and set it back in the drawer and closed the drawer. She did not slam it. She did not need to.
"Six," she said. Not to Mira specifically. Just to the room, which had been a participant in this for twenty-two years and could serve as the audience for the observation. "I was six."
Mira came and sat next to her on the edge of the bed. She didn’t say anything. She sat there, and Grace sat there, and the fire burned, and outside the window the Velmira garden was the same garden it had always been.
Grace sat with the specific grief of a person who has understood something about their own history that cannot be ununderstood. Not dramatic grief — she was not going to perform this for herself or anyone else. Just the ordinary weight of it: the understanding that the hands she had written with all her life had been trained from the age of six to produce someone else’s signature, and that the education she had thought was preparation for a life had in fact been preparation for a role, and that the two things were so thoroughly entangled in her memory that she could not pull out one without disturbing the other.
She sat with it until the weight had taken its proper place, and then she stood up.
"I need to speak to Lord Maeron tomorrow morning," she said. "And I need to know where Adrian is in the house tonight."
"East study," Mira said. "He moved all his work there while you were away."
Grace noted this. "All right," she said. "Let’s have dinner."
