Adrian found her in the afternoon.
She had spent the hours after her conversation with Maeron in her room, working through a set of documents she had brought from Ravencroft — evidence copies Cassian had made for her, the kind that could be reviewed without the originals. She was building a parallel record: not for her own understanding, which was largely complete, but for the purpose of presenting evidence in a form that could withstand external scrutiny. She was thinking ahead now, past the moment of confrontation to the architecture of what came after.
Adrian knocked and came in when she answered, which was how he had always operated in this house: the knock was courtesy, the entry was assumption. She had grown up in this dynamic and had never examined it before. She was examining it now.
"Working?" he said, looking at the papers on the desk.
"Reading," she said. She closed the folder with the naturalness of someone tidying rather than concealing. "How are you?"
He sat in the chair she had not offered him, in the familiar way. "I’m worried about you," he said. "That’s how I am."
"You don’t need to be."
"Grace." His voice had the specific register of warmth and concern that she had known her whole life. "You’ve been through a great deal. Ravencroft is a complicated house. I think you’ve been spending too much time there alone, and too much time —" He paused, choosing carefully. "Looking for things that aren’t necessarily there to be found."
"What things do you think I’ve been looking for?" she asked.
"Some kind of mystery. Some kind of story about your origins." He looked at her with the expression of genuine care that was also, she now understood, a very specific form of control. "You have a home here. You have a family. Whatever you think you’ve found in Ravencroft’s archives or in some coastal market —"
He stopped. Registered that he had said too much.
Grace looked at him steadily. "You knew I was in Marrowbay."
A beat. "I heard you had taken a day trip to the coast with Ravencroft."
"Who told you?"
"Someone mentioned it."
"Who?"
A slight adjustment in his expression — not large, but she knew his face too well for it to be invisible. "I have people in the city who keep me informed about Velmira matters. It’s a responsibility of the position."
Grace absorbed this without commenting on it. She had expected it. The confirmation still landed with a specific weight.
"Come and have tea," he said, standing with the ease of someone moving past an awkward moment. "I had something brought from the city — a blend you used to like when you were younger. Let me make it for you."
She followed him to his small sitting room.
---
The room was warm and well-furnished with the specific comfort of a space that had been designed for a person who valued small pleasures — good books, decent art, the kind of furniture that was built for sitting in rather than looking at. Adrian had always had taste. She had always found this room pleasant.
She sat in the chair he indicated and watched him prepare the tea with the unhurried competence of someone who genuinely enjoyed the small ritual of it. He spoke while he worked — city news, a mention of someone they both knew, something about the state of the roads. The kind of conversation that created an atmosphere of normal.
He brought the cup to her. The steam rose as she took it.
And in the steam, carried on the ambient warmth of the cup, very faint: the specific sweetness of Winter Rose, with the sharpness underneath it that she had learned to identify as the processed compound rather than the raw plant.
She did not react.
She held the cup in both hands and looked at him with the expression of a person enjoying warmth after cold, and she did not drink. She asked him about the city. He answered. She turned the conversation to a mutual acquaintance. He followed it there. She asked a question that required him to look away for a moment, toward the window, to think of a name — and in that moment she set the cup on the side table beside her chair, partially behind the small decorative piece that stood there, and turned her attention back to him before he finished looking at the window.
When he looked back, the cup was on the table. She was not holding it. She did not pick it up again.
He looked at the cup once. A single glance, quickly redirected. She logged it.
---
The conversation lasted half an hour. When she went back to her room, she poured the remaining contents of the cup — which she had retrieved from the table when she stood to leave, with the naturalness of someone picking up after themselves — into the potted plant on the windowsill. Then she sat on the edge of the bed and thought.
Winter Rose in the tea. Not enough to produce severe effects — not the distillery concentration. The ambient level of the Garden had been enough to trigger memory fragments; this tea, at this dose, would have produced something gentler. Softening, probably. The lowered guard that the compound produced at mild doses, which was not dramatic but which, over the course of a conversation, could make a person more agreeable, more comfortable with familiar narratives, more willing to accept the framing of someone they trusted.
Not an attack. A management tool.
She had been in this house for less than twenty-four hours. He had not waited.
Mira knocked and entered without waiting for an answer, which was unusual — she always waited. Her expression told Grace before she said a word.
"I’ve been moved," Mira said. "The housekeeper came while you were with Adrian. I’m to work the west household for the duration of your visit."
Grace looked at her. Mira’s expression was the specific controlled version that meant she was managing a strong reaction.
"Who gave the order?"
"The housekeeper said it came down from management. Which means Adrian."
Grace stood. She went to the window and looked at the garden. Then she looked back at Mira.
"How long do we have before someone notices we’re talking?"
"Ten minutes," Mira said. "I told them I needed to help you with your luggage first."
"Then listen," Grace said. "I need to know three things. The exits from this house that aren’t monitored at night. The location of the east study where Adrian keeps his current work. And whether there is anyone in the household staff who is not Adrian’s." She met Mira’s eyes. "Not Maeron’s. Not household loyalty. Adrian’s specifically."
Mira’s expression shifted from controlled into something sharper — the specific focus of a person whose job had just changed character. "I’ll find out what I can."
"Don’t take risks."
"I never take risks," Mira said. "I take calculated assessments." She picked up the empty travelling case and carried it to the wardrobe, because if the door opened she was helping with luggage and nothing else. "He moved fast."
"He always moves fast when something has happened that he didn’t anticipate," Grace said. "The question is what he thinks has happened."
"He thinks you know something."
"He’s right," Grace said. "He just doesn’t know how much."
