The records room was not locked.
Grace had expected it to be — had prepared, in a vague way, for the possibility of a lock and the problem that would present — and so the unlocked door was the first surprise of the morning. The second was that the room was exactly where she had estimated it would be, based on the floor plan she had assembled in her head from three days of careful observation: off the main administrative corridor, second door on the right, the one that smelled faintly of old paper when the air moved correctly.
She opened it and went in.
Mira was at the end of the corridor, at the intersection with the east hall, doing nothing in particular in the specific way that indicated she was keeping watch and would let Grace know if anyone approached. This arrangement had not been discussed. It had not needed to be. After four years of service, Mira understood how Grace worked and had made her own decisions about participation.
Grace did not have long. She intended to be thorough within the time available and to take nothing — not a page, not an envelope — out of the room. What she took, she would take in her memory, where no one could look for it.
---
The records room was the size of a generous study, floor-to-ceiling shelving on three walls, freestanding shelving in the centre of the room, everything labelled in the Ravencroft system which turned out, after a moment of examination, to be a date-and-subject cross-reference that was logical if you understood the conventions of how aristocratic houses organised their administrative history.
She went to the oldest section first — the shelving marked with decades rather than years, the earliest materials she could find. Correspondence. Estate management. Tax and tithe records. The unglamorous documentation of a functioning household across generations.
And then: contracts.
The contracts section took up three full shelves in the old material. Property contracts, trade contracts, labour contracts, the extensive legal machinery of a noble house that controlled significant land and significant resources. Grace ran her fingers along the spines of the binders, reading labels, until she found what she was looking for.
*Winter Rose — Cultivation Rights and Commercial Agreements.*
Seven binders. She pulled the first one — 1720 to 1745 — and began to read.
---
The earliest agreements were straightforward: cultivation rights, agreements about the controlled sale of Winter Rose material, arrangements with apothecaries and perfumers and medical researchers. Ravencroft controlled the only significant cultivation of Winter Rose in Elyndor, and the commercial implications of that control were substantial. She had known this in outline. The specifics were more interesting than she had expected.
Each agreement, she noted, required a signatory from both parties. On the Ravencroft side: the current lord or his designated representative. On the other side: whichever merchant or researcher was party to the contract.
And on the Velmira side — because Velmira appeared regularly, too regularly, on agreements concerning the distribution rights rather than the cultivation — the signatory was always, every time, without exception across the full span of years she was looking at:
*Grace Velmira.*
Grace pulled a second binder. The same. A third — and here the dates moved forward into territory that should have covered a different generation, but the signature was consistent: *Grace Velmira,* and beneath it, the flowing even hand she had practiced since childhood.
She set the three binders side by side on the reading table and looked at the signature blocks one after another.
1731. 1749. 1763. 1778. 1791. 1802. And onward.
The nib pressure varied slightly across the years — not much, but enough to tell her she was looking at different hands. The particular lift at the end of the final letter was present in all of them, but at slightly different angles. The V was consistent across all samples, almost perfectly so, the way a letter was consistent when it had been taught and practiced to a standard rather than developed organically.
She was looking at generations of women who had been taught to produce this signature. Not the same woman. Multiple women, trained to sign the same name in the same hand, with enough consistency to function across legal instruments but enough variation to reflect the reality of individual bodies.
Her own hand was one of them.
The cold that moved through her was not the cold of the records room. It was the cold of a particular kind of recognition — the kind that did not produce panic but produced a sudden absolute clarity, the way things looked for a moment after lightning struck somewhere nearby.
She was not unique. She was not the result of some specific and extraordinary arrangement. She was the most recent in a series. The series had been running for, as far as she could determine from the documents in front of her, at least seventy years.
*The next Grace,* the maid had said.
The next. As if there was an established sequence.
There was an established sequence.
---
She spent the remaining time moving through the binders with the systematic care of someone who knows they will not have the opportunity again and intends to extract the maximum from one exposure. She was looking for anomalies — dates where the agreements had been interrupted, breaks in the chain of documentation, anything that indicated a moment of disruption or transition.
She found three.
The first was in the 1740s — a gap of six years where no Winter Rose agreements appeared bearing the Velmira signature, followed by the resumption of the pattern with a new signatory. The second was in the 1780s — similar, shorter, three years. The third was more recent: approximately twelve years ago, another gap, and then the pattern resuming again.
Gaps. Transitions. The handover of the role from one Grace to the next.
Elowen Marst's connection to Ravencroft had been approximately four years ago, according to the public timeline. Elowen had come here. Whatever had happened — whatever the public record said had happened — the next Winter Rose agreement bearing a Velmira signature appeared approximately eighteen months after Elowen's recorded death. The signature was different from Elowen's. Not dramatically, but the angle of the final letter was slightly changed.
Grace looked at the new signature — her predecessor in this role, someone she had not thought to look for.
Then she closed the binder, replaced all the materials in their precise original positions, and went to the door.
---
The corridor outside was empty.
Mira was not at the end of it — she had moved, which meant the agreed signal: someone had come. Grace closed the records room door quietly and began to walk, at the pace of a person who was simply in transit from one place to another, toward the east corridor.
She heard Cassian before she saw him — not footsteps but presence, the particular quality of attention she had already learned to identify as his, the change in the air of a space when he was occupying it. She turned a corner and he was there, coming from the direction of his study, and for a moment they occupied the same stretch of corridor.
He looked at her. She looked at him.
His gaze moved, briefly, to the direction she had come from. Then back to her.
She did not say anything. Neither did he.
He turned and continued toward the west wing. She continued toward the East Wing. Their paths diverged in the corridor junction and she did not look back, because looking back would tell him that she was thinking about the fact that he had seen where she had been.
He had seen. He had not said anything. He had not changed course to intersect with her or to go to the records room himself.
Which meant one of two things. Either he had not understood the implication of where she had been — which she did not believe. Or he had understood and had, for reasons of his own, let her go.
Let her find what was there to be found.
---
In the privacy of her room she sat with the folded papers from the back of her writing case — the signature she had practiced on her first night, the notes from the Garden — and spread them on the desk.
She thought about what she had found.
She was one of a series. The series stretched back at least seventy years and possibly further. Each iteration had been trained to produce the same signature, to occupy the same legal function, to serve as a point of continuity in the Winter Rose commercial arrangements. When one Grace's role was concluded — for whatever reason, by whatever means — another was prepared to take her place.
Elowen Marst had been a Grace. Now she was dead or gone or both. And Grace was the next.
She thought about what that meant for what was expected of her.
She thought about what it meant that Cassian knew all of this and had invited her here anyway. She had been thinking, since their first meeting, that he was withholding information to protect himself. She was beginning to revise that. A man protecting himself did not let an inconvenient house guest into the records room and then not stop her.
A man letting her find what was there was doing something else.
She looked at the signature she had written on her first night at Velmira House. The signature that had matched the contract. The signature that had, she now understood, been trained into her specifically so that she could serve a legal function in a structure she hadn't known existed.
She thought about the memory fragment in the Garden. The voice. The running. The name that wasn't Grace.
Somewhere at the beginning of all of this — before the training, before the signature, before the role — there had been a child with a different name.
Grace wanted to know what it was.
