Preparation had a limit.
Lyra had always known this in the abstract — there was a point past which additional preparation produced diminishing returns, where the mind had taken in everything it could usefully process and further input became noise rather than signal. She had known it and had, over two years of competitive play, developed a reasonable ability to identify when she had reached that point and stop.
Tonight, she had reached the point at approximately nine forty-five PM.
She had been lying on her bed for an hour and forty-seven minutes since then, looking at the ceiling, with the specific quality of consciousness that was not sleep and was not rest and was not productive wakefulness but was simply the experience of a brain that had been told it was done for the night and had declined to accept the instruction.
The qualifier was at nine AM.
She had reviewed the opponent footage. She had drafted the strategy notes. She had checked her equipment twice, gone through her pre-competition mental checklist, eaten the right food at the right time, and done everything that could be done in the preparation window available to her. There was nothing left to do.
Her brain was running anyway.
At eleven twenty-three, she stopped arguing with it and got up.
---
She put on her training hoodie — the gray one, worn at the cuffs, soft in the way that things became soft through long use — and took her water bottle and walked out of her room without a specific destination.
This was unusual. She generally had specific destinations.
She was in the corridor before she noticed where she was going, and in the stairwell before she named it, and standing at the entrance to the second-floor hallway before she examined the fact that she was heading to the corner without having decided to go to the corner.
She did not examine it for long.
She walked down the hallway.
The building was quiet in the way it was quiet after eleven on a weeknight — not empty, there were people in their rooms, but the collective noise level had dropped below the threshold of ambient and become something closer to absence. The overhead lights were at their night-mode setting: lower, warmer, the kind of light that was functional rather than alerting. She walked through it and felt, if not calmer, then at least less actively not-calm.
At the end of the hallway, the alcove was lit.
Not lit, exactly — illuminated. The ambient light from the city outside the window, the sodium-yellow quality of streetlights filtered through glass and distance, was enough to see by without being enough to read by. In that light, in the bench that she had come to think of as the shared bench in the corner that she had come to think of as the shared corner, someone was already sitting.
She stopped.
---
He was sitting the way he sat when he was not performing anything — not the upright precision of practice, not the deliberate stillness of observation, just the natural configuration of a person who was tired in a specific way and had come somewhere to be tired in it. His water glass was on the windowsill. His hands were in his lap. He was looking out the window at the courtyard below, which at this hour was lit by two overhead fixtures and the same ambient city glow that reached the second floor.
He had gotten there first.
Lyra stood at the entrance to the hallway and processed this.
He had gotten there first, which meant he had come here before she had, which meant he had also gotten up and also walked through the quiet building and also arrived at the same destination she had arrived at. The reasons could have been various — she was not going to assume. But the fact was simple: he was here, at eleven-thirty PM, the night before the qualifier, not sleeping.
She walked to the end of the hallway.
He heard her when she was close — she saw the small shift in his posture that meant he had registered her approach, the slight reorientation that preceded awareness. He turned his head when she was close enough that it was natural to turn.
He looked at her.
She looked back.
Neither of them said anything. She sat down in the space beside him — the same configuration as before, the sixty centimeters of faded cushion, the window at the same angle — and looked out at the courtyard.
The cat was not there tonight.
Something else was, though — a stillness that had a different quality from the building's ordinary nighttime quiet. The quality of two people who had both come to the same place for the same reason and were now sitting in the fact of it.
---
She looked at him.
Not the assessment look. Not the tactical observation. Just looked, in the low light, at someone she had been looking at in various ways for five weeks.
He looked different at eleven-thirty PM the night before a competition.
She had not been prepared for how different.
She had seen him in practice — focused, precise, the controlled intensity of someone running at a high percentage of capacity. She had seen him in meetings — contained, economical, the version of himself he presented to groups. She had seen him in the corner before, but those had been evenings rather than nights, hours when the day was over rather than hours when the next day had not yet begun.
This was different.
The containment was there — it was always there, she thought it was probably structural rather than situational, the way some people were built — but there was something underneath it that was visible in a way it was not usually visible. Not anxiety. Not the performed confidence of someone who was masking something. Just the real version of what it felt like to be someone who cared very much about something that was going to happen in nine and a half hours and could not make it happen faster.
She recognized it because she felt it too.
This was the thing she had not expected: that he would look like someone she recognized.
---
The silence ran for a while. It had the quality of their previous silences — something that did not require filling — but it also had something else in it now, something that had not been there before. She was not sure if it had arrived tonight or if it had been accumulating and she was only noticing it now, at eleven-thirty, in the low light, sitting next to someone who had also not been able to sleep.
Ethan said, without looking away from the window: "What time is your qualifier?"
"Nine AM," she said. "Yours?"
"Two PM."
A small silence.
"Enough time to watch your results before mine," he said, which was a logistical observation and also, she thought, something else, something that she filed without labeling.
Another small silence.
Then: "Are you sleeping?"
She looked at him. He was still looking at the window, at the courtyard below, at the city beyond the courtyard.
"No," she said.
"Me either."
Two words. He said them to the window rather than to her, which was either his way of making the admission easier or simply where his attention was. She did not know which. She was aware that she had stopped trying to determine which, at some point in the past few weeks — stopped trying to parse his intentions through the framework of what people usually meant and started simply receiving what he said as what it was.
The admission was: he was not sleeping either.
The additional information it contained was: he had come here for the same reason she had.
She looked back at the window.
---
They sat for a while longer.
She thought about the qualifier. She thought about her team — Zara, Bao Chau, Ha Linh, Ngoc Mai, Coach Yeon — five people who had been building something together for five weeks and were going to find out tomorrow how much of it had actually taken. She thought about the strategy notes she had drafted and the opponent footage she had reviewed and the specific adjustments she had planned for the first game.
She thought about the person sitting beside her, who had qualifier prep of his own and was also not sleeping and had also come here.
She thought about the fact that she was not, sitting here, more anxious than she had been lying in her room. She was still running too many threads. But the running felt less like a problem and more like a condition — something that was true about tonight and would be less true by morning, the way things were always less true by morning.
At some point, Ethan stood up.
Not abruptly — with the gradual motion of someone who had decided they were done sitting rather than someone who had decided to leave. He picked up his water glass from the windowsill. He stood for a moment in the amber light.
At the entrance to the hallway, he stopped.
He did not turn around.
"Nine AM is a good slot," he said, to the hallway rather than to her. "Enough time for a proper warm-up."
Not *good luck.* Not *I hope it goes well.* Just: a specific piece of information about why the timing was favorable, offered in the same tone he offered all specific pieces of information.
She heard what it was.
She listened to his footsteps go down the hallway, down the staircase, and disappear into the building's quiet.
Then she sat alone in the corner and looked out the window at the courtyard — west-southwest, two hundred sixty degrees, the city doing its nighttime work beyond the glass — and stayed for a while longer.
She thought about *are you sleeping* and *no* and *me either.*
Six words between them. The smallest possible exchange. And yet.
She had been asked. She had answered. Someone had received the answer and offered their own. This was a transaction so small it barely had a name, and it had produced something she had not had when she walked out of her room at eleven twenty-three: not calm, exactly, but something adjacent to it. The feeling of being in a specific place and having someone know you were there.
She did not know when that had started to matter to her.
She knew it mattered.
She sat until almost one o'clock, which was later than she had meant to stay. Then she went back to her room and lay down and looked at the ceiling for a while and eventually, without quite noticing the transition, stopped looking at it.
She slept.
In the morning, the qualifier was at nine.
