Two days after the qualifier, the gaming house had settled back into its preparation rhythm.
The qualifier had produced results — both teams through their respective brackets, both teams with footage to review and weaknesses to address and opponents to prepare for in the next round. The building's energy was the energy of work that had been validated and was now continuing, the specific forward momentum of a process that had produced the right outcome and was now asking what came next.
Ethan arrived at the review session with his notes complete and his questions ready.
This was his standard state for meetings with Marcus. He had learned early that the most productive sessions were the ones where he came with his own analysis already done, so that the session could be used for the things that two people working together could produce that one person working alone could not. Marcus had learned, in parallel, that Ethan's pre-prepared analysis was usually worth engaging with rather than replacing, which had produced a collaborative dynamic that was, by Ethan's assessment, one of the more efficient working relationships he had experienced.
He had one question he was carrying that was not in his notes.
He had been carrying it for two weeks.
---
The men's team review took thirty-eight minutes.
Three things to address: a pattern in their mid-lane aggression that had been slightly too predictable in the qualifier match, a team fight sequencing issue that had appeared twice and needed to be named before it became a habit, and an adjustment to their draft strategy for the next round that Marcus had been developing and wanted to walk through. All of it was useful. Ethan's notes contributed two points that Marcus hadn't covered; Marcus's analysis refined one of Ethan's conclusions. The session was doing what it was supposed to do.
Then Marcus set down the remote.
Left side of the table.
"The women's team had a good qualifier run," he said. The observation was offered the way Marcus offered most observations: as a starting point rather than a conclusion, something he was putting on the table to see what the other person did with it.
"They did," Ethan said.
"Tang's reads were better than expected for someone at this level of competition for the first time." Marcus looked at the bracket printout on the table, not at Ethan. "The execution gap she came in with is almost closed. That's faster than the timeline I would have projected."
"She's been working on it specifically."
Marcus looked up. Not sharply — just the mild recalibration of someone who had received a piece of information that contained slightly more detail than expected. "You've been watching."
"I track the org's performance data."
"Of course." The corner of Marcus's mouth moved. "Tell me what you've observed."
Ethan told him. He did this the way he did the men's team analysis — accurately, with specific examples, without editorializing. The vision gap correction. The execution improvement rate. The read quality that had been evident since the first scrimmage and had not diminished under qualifier pressure.
He noticed, partway through, that he was speaking with more specificity than he had used in the previous session when Marcus had asked the same general question.
He kept going anyway.
---
Marcus listened without interrupting.
When Ethan finished, he was quiet for a moment in the way that meant he was deciding something about the next part of the conversation — not what to say, but how much to say and in what order.
"Her background shapes how she plays," Marcus said. "Players who come from environments where they had to make good decisions to survive — not ranked ladder grind, actual competitive pressure with consequences — they develop a different kind of read. The ladder teaches you patterns. Real competition teaches you to read people."
"Vanguard," Ethan said.
Marcus looked at him.
"I researched them," Ethan said. "After you mentioned her background the last time. I found the qualifier bracket." He met Marcus's gaze. "I found the match."
The silence that followed was not uncomfortable — Marcus's silences rarely were. It was the silence of someone who had just received information and was updating their understanding of where the conversation was.
"You've known for two weeks," Marcus said. Not accusatory. Observational.
"Yes."
"And you're asking about it now."
"I'm asking about the parts I don't know," Ethan said. "The match and the timeline — I found those. What I don't know is how it happened from her side."
Marcus was quiet again.
Then he said: "What specifically do you want to know?"
"The women's team. What was their situation when the dissolution happened."
---
Marcus told him.
He had the information because he had been involved in the regional circuit at an organizational level before coming to ZNT — not with Vanguard specifically, but with enough adjacent knowledge that he had the shape of it, and had apparently filled in the rest when Lyra had joined the org.
The women's division at Vanguard had been established in the final year of the organization's operation. It had been, by the accounts Marcus had heard, a genuine effort rather than a paper division — resources were limited, as they always were at that level, but the intent had been real. Lyra had been the first player signed to the roster. She had been the one to identify and recruit the other four. She had spent six months building a team that, by the end of those six months, was functional enough to qualify for regional competition.
"She never played a match," Marcus said. "Not officially. They were three weeks out from their qualifier when the announcement came."
Ethan said nothing.
"The dissolution decision was made quickly after the men's team was eliminated," Marcus continued. "The sponsor had a performance clause. The qualifier exit triggered it. Once the funding was gone, the org had maybe a week before they couldn't make payroll." He paused. "The women's team found out the same way everyone else did. The announcement email."
Ethan looked at the bracket printout on the table.
"She didn't know it was coming," he said.
"No one on the women's team did. They were preparing for their own qualifier when it happened." Marcus looked at him steadily. "Six months of work. A functional team. Dissolved in a week, before they had a chance to demonstrate anything."
The room was quiet.
Ethan thought about the qualifier two days ago — the van returning to the gaming house, the lightness in the building, the hallway where he had stopped and said two words that had not had a tactical purpose. He thought about what it had meant to Lyra for something to produce a good result, and what it had cost her, once, for something she had built to produce nothing at all before it was taken.
---
"Why did she come here?" Ethan asked. "To ZNT specifically."
Marcus looked at him for a moment — the particular look he wore when he thought a question was interesting in a way the person asking it might not have fully intended.
"She's never said, directly," Marcus said. "The professional reasons she gave in her contract discussions were legitimate — we have infrastructure, we have competition access, we have an actual women's division rather than a token one." He paused. "But I've been doing this long enough to know when someone is choosing a place because of what it offers and when they're choosing a place because of what they need to resolve."
"And which is she?"
"Both," Marcus said. "Usually both, with the people who are worth paying attention to."
He picked up his pen and wrote something in his notebook — something that had nothing to do with the conversation, from the look of it, just a note to himself. Then he looked up.
"People who build something and lose it the way she lost Vanguard," he said, "they don't forget. They decide what to do with it. Some of them decide to protect themselves from ever being in that position again, and they do that by not building things. Some of them decide the answer is to build something that can't be taken away. And some of them" — he paused — "decide to go back to the place where it started and figure out what they think about it."
He said this to the table.
Ethan heard it land in a way that had nothing to do with Lyra specifically.
"I see," he said.
"I thought you might." Marcus closed his notebook. "Next week will be harder. The quarter-final preparation starts immediately."
"I know."
"Good." He stood up. "See you Thursday."
---
Ethan sat in the review room after Marcus left.
Not for long — five minutes, maybe six, the amount of time required to let the conversation settle into something he could carry without it sitting on top of everything else.
Six months.
He kept returning to the number. Not because it was large — in the context of a competitive career, six months was not a long time. But in the context of what those six months had been: building a roster, developing a team, preparing for something that was going to mean something — in that context, six months was the entirety of a thing. The whole of what had existed before it stopped existing.
And she had not known it was going to stop.
He thought about the first day she had arrived at ZNT — the single bag, the mapping of the building, the way she had looked at him in the hallway with the expression of someone who had already decided something and was waiting to see if the decision held. He had not understood the expression then. He understood it better now.
He thought about *seventeen*, and *eleven*, and *fix the delay*, and *good result today*, and the corner at eleven-thirty PM, and all the small accumulated weight of five weeks that had been building toward something he had been approaching from one direction while she had been approaching from another, each of them carrying information the other did not have.
He thought about what Marcus had said — *some of them decide to go back to the place where it started* — and the question he had not asked Marcus because it was not Marcus's to answer.
The question was: what had she decided to do with it?
Not in the abstract. Specifically. About him.
He did not know the answer. He could not find the answer in footage or bracket data or any of the information systems he had been using. The answer existed in one place, and that place was a conversation he had not had yet.
He picked up his notes and his bag.
He was not going to have that conversation today — the timing was wrong, the context was wrong, and he was self-aware enough to know that *I researched the organization that dissolved before you could play in it and I now know more about what happened than you know I know* was not a conversation that could be approached without preparation.
But he was going to have it.
The question was when, and how, and whether — when he did — she would answer it in the way he was, he recognized with some discomfort, hoping she would.
He walked out of the review room and down the corridor toward the practice room.
He had quarter-final preparation to do.
He did it.
