The weekend had a texture that the rest of the week didn't.
Lyra had spent most of the season treating weekends as compressed workdays — the absence of scheduled sessions replaced with individual practice, footage review, preparation for the next thing. It had seemed like the correct approach at the time. The season was short, the competition window was specific, and the gap between where the team was and where they needed to be had seemed too significant to allow for anything that wasn't directly useful.
The gap was smaller now.
She was sitting in the corner — their corner, she had stopped correcting herself on the possessive — with a book open in her lap that she had been reading intermittently for the past hour and a half. Not study, not preparation. A novel she had found in the common area bookshelf, left by someone who had stayed in this building before her, with the slightly worn quality of a book that had been read by more than one person and had absorbed some of that.
She was on page seventy-three.
The afternoon light was doing something interesting to the courtyard below — the specific angle of late-afternoon sun on concrete that she had noticed before and kept noticing, the way certain qualities of light registered as significant without her knowing quite why.
She heard footsteps at the end of the hallway.
She did not look up from the book.
---
He sat down.
Not with announcement, not with the particular energy of someone who had arrived with something to say. The way he sometimes arrived at the corner — as though the corner was a place he had ended up rather than a place he had chosen to go, which she no longer believed but which was still the manner of it.
She kept reading for a few minutes. He looked out the window. The city went about its business below them.
At some point, without either of them deciding to begin, she closed the book.
"Why did you choose mid lane?"
She had not planned to ask this. It arrived the way things sometimes arrived in this corner — without preparation, without the usual preceding calculation of whether it was a question she was allowed to ask.
He looked at the window for a moment before answering.
"It has the most information," he said. "From mid, you can see everything. You can affect top, bot, jungle. You have the clearest view of the whole map at every stage of the game." A beat. "Most people hear that and think I want to control everything."
"But that's not it."
"No." He was quiet for a moment. "Controlling and understanding are different things. I want to understand everything. The control is a byproduct."
She looked at him.
"You know the difference," she said. Not a question — an observation.
He turned from the window and looked at her. "Most people don't?"
"Most people use them interchangeably." She turned the book over in her hands, running her thumb along the spine. "The ones who want control usually think they want to understand. They don't notice the distinction."
"And the ones who want to understand?"
"They notice," she said. "They're usually frustrated by how much is still unknowable."
He was quiet in the way he was quiet when he was thinking rather than waiting. Then: "Why did you choose Support?"
---
She started with the answer she had given before.
She heard herself giving it — the language about role complexity, about the satisfaction of enabling others, about the particular challenge of a position that influenced every phase of the game without being the position that won it directly. The words were accurate. She had said them enough times that they had the smoothness of something worn into a comfortable shape.
She stopped mid-sentence.
He waited.
"That's the right answer," she said. "It's not the whole answer."
He said nothing. The window was doing its west-southwest thing — the light at this hour making the courtyard look more golden than it actually was. She looked at it and thought about how to say the next thing.
"The whole answer starts earlier," she said. "Before I knew what a role was, before I knew anything about competitive play." She paused. "I was thirteen. I saw someone play and I understood, for the first time, that you could do something that mattered without being the one everyone was watching."
She stopped there.
Not because she had said enough — she had not, she had barely started — but because the next sentence required her to continue moving in a direction she had not previously moved all the way through, and she was registering the approach to the edge of it.
"Go on," he said. Not a prompt — more like the acknowledgment that she had stopped and he was still there.
She went on.
"I watched this person play — a clip, online, low-resolution, not even a significant match. And the way they played wasn't about being seen. It was about — " she searched for the word. "Presence. Being in exactly the right place at exactly the right time, not because someone told them to be there, but because they had read the game well enough to know." She looked at the book in her hands. "I wanted to learn how to do that. I didn't know what game sense was, I didn't know about vision control or positioning theory. I just knew I wanted to be able to read things the way that person was reading them."
She was quiet for a moment.
She became aware, as she sat in the quiet, that the story had moved further than she had moved it before. She had told parts of it — to Zara, to herself in the dark of her room, in the versions she ran in her own head — but she had not put these parts together, in this order, out loud, for someone who was listening.
"And then?" he said.
She looked at him.
His expression was the one he had when he was paying the kind of attention that did not require eye contact to demonstrate — eyes slightly unfocused, directed somewhere that was not quite the room, the look of someone whose processing was running at full capacity on the inside rather than managing appearances on the outside.
She knew what the next part of the story was.
The next part of the story was: she had followed that player's career. Had watched them develop from the low-resolution regional qualifier clip to the person they had become. Had started playing because of them. Had chosen a position and a playstyle and a way of thinking about the game that had been shaped, at its origin, by watching someone she had never met make a series of decisions in a match she had stumbled across on the internet when she was thirteen years old.
The next part of the story was: and then the team she had built, six months of work, had dissolved in the wake of a qualifier match against that same person's team.
The next part of the story was his name.
She did not say it.
She said instead: "I've been thinking about how to tell the rest of it. I don't have the right words yet."
He looked at her — the full look, not the unfocused processing one. The one that meant he was reading her directly rather than the situation around her.
She met his gaze.
She thought: he is close. He has most of the pieces. He may already have all of them.
She thought: I am not ready for the conversation that happens when I give him the last one.
She thought: I am less not-ready than I was.
"You don't have to have them yet," he said.
Four words, delivered in the same tone he delivered accurate information — flat, unhurried, without editorial. But the information in those four words was not tactical. It was: I'm not going anywhere. It was: the conversation is still here when you're ready for it.
She looked at the book in her hands.
"I know," she said.
---
They sat for a while longer.
The afternoon did its thing — the light shifted, the courtyard moved from gold to gray as a cloud crossed somewhere above them, moved back. A cyclist in the street below, the brief sound of music from a window on another floor, the ordinary ambient texture of a building that was alive without being loud.
She thought about what she had said and what she had not said.
The gap between them was smaller than it had been an hour ago. Not closed — she had stopped before the part that would close it, because the part that would close it was the part she did not yet have words for. But smaller. Measurably smaller.
She thought about the clip at thirteen — the low-resolution image, the play that had almost worked, the person she had followed from that clip to here without knowing she was following them anywhere.
She thought about *you don't have to have them yet* and the specific quality of being told, by someone who valued precision in everything, that imprecision was permissible.
She thought: I am going to have to find the words.
Not because he had asked. Not because the situation required it. Because she had been carrying the story for a long time without telling it to anyone who mattered, and the weight of it had started to feel different now that she could imagine setting it down.
She was not ready.
She was more ready than she had been.
---
He left before she did — the unhurried departure that meant he had somewhere to be or something to do, not that the conversation had ended. She had learned to read the difference.
After he was gone, she sat alone in the corner with the book in her lap and the city doing its evening work below the window.
She thought about: *I've been thinking about how to tell the rest of it. I don't have the right words yet.*
She had said *I've been thinking about it.* Present continuous. Active.
She had not said *I don't want to tell it.* She had not said *it isn't something I plan to tell you.* She had said she did not yet have the words, which was not the same thing as not having the story, and which implied — to someone who paid attention to the gap between what was said and what was not — that the words were something she was working toward rather than away from.
She had offered that, deliberately or not.
He had received it.
She turned to page seventy-four and started reading, and the evening settled around her, and the city went on below, and the story she had not yet told waited patiently in the part of her that had stopped pretending it wasn't there.
She was tired of not being ready.
She was not quite ready.
But the distance between those two things was closing.
